    Thanks mike! You do need to be careful tho when crashing with the kite at 12. Obviously when you crash there’s a lot more drag from the water and you immediately start to slow down from going downwind and what often happens is that the lines will fall slack, the kite starts to frontstall, fall down and then randomly catch wind again which can be quite dangerous in strong winds (I’ve broken a line before cuz of that pull). If I can I always put the kite at the zenith for as long as possible and right before I hit the water I steer the kite down a bit to remain line-tension.

    This is funny that this topic is emphasized by a big air expert, as plenty of big crashes happened at the early stage of kite practice, and all along chaotic progression ! And as much as I know you are the first one to give tips on it on UA-cam … appart plenty of nice crashes compilations !
    Thank you, it is never too late!!!😇

      Haha yes I've had masssssive crashes. It's funny but at some point you figure these things out from this video and then you stop crashing hard. You still crash, but it's controlled. And my kite hardly ever tomahawks these days because I got better at steering it before impact 🕺

    When you broke your MCL at 1:32, you appeared to do Board, Bum, Back. I guess this technique is limited to a certain height/speed, after which it risks injury? You always sneak in a disturbing clip which is funny as. I love your videos - thanks for these.

    I'd like to add: one way to stay humble about crashing is to keep landboarding in your regular rotation of disciplines. It really forces you to be restrained and controlled. Also, I always wear a helmet and pads when landboarding.

  • @DmitriyLaktyushkin
    @DmitriyLaktyushkin Рік тому +1

    I guess it depends on your other experiences when you start, but these were pretty obvious to me even as beginner. The pain point are those crashes where you launch so badly you can't apply the techniques. I find the biggest problem for me has always been losing sense of direction and control of kite when rotating unexpectedly, though that's happening less now that I'm intentionally rolling more often. Might be a good idea to focus on spinning tricks before going for big air for minimizing the hurt.

    Hi Mike! Thanks for another great video.
    A somewhat related question:
    I find it easy to jump high (ca 8-9m) and land with my big kites (12m, and 14.5m). They always catch me.
    However, I only land properly 50% of my high jumps with my smaller kite (a 9m Orbit, & I refuse to go high with smaller kites, as they move too fast for my current taste). The 50% of landings I crash have significant impact on my knees, and happiness.
    Any tips one should consider when flying small kites? How to make those jumps work?

    • @gboates
      @gboates Рік тому

      Some kite brands and models have much better catch than do other brands. A feature worth researching I find... you can start with Mikes shirt.

    • @gboates
      @gboates Рік тому

      Re the knees, after three same brand super lightweight carbon boards after every jump session my ankle joints would be black and blue as well as the soles of my feet felt pounded. Even moving to XR7 kites did not help that much. Since a year I have moved to heavy freestyle rockered board with a displacement bulb on the bottom centreline line (thanks Youri) The weight (mass) of the board absorbs energy and as well I selected pads that seemed very stiff but they do not allow energy to travel up into my legs.
      My experience shared

    Just Monday, I suffered a grade 2 concussion while practicing a backroll in slightly stronger winds and had full blown amnesia for about 30 minutes- not fun!
    In light of this and once I recover, I’ve been considering getting a helmet, as I have zero intention of ceasing to absolutely send it as often as possible.
    Any thoughts on helmets? Simba Sentinel 1?

    Great tips. I’ve found that my worst crashes happen when I get fucked up by a loop and land on my side or on my back.
    Any tips for when you know you’re gonna land on your back other than trying to get the kite as high as possible?

    • @gethighwithmike
      @gethighwithmike  Рік тому

      Yes absolutely! Great question.
      Answer is 2 things.
      If you're jumping left: Start to realize that your right hand steers the kite "back where you came from" and your left steers it "towards where you're going". That way you don't think about "steering left" but rather "steering forward"
      Does that make sense? That way when I'm upside down or backwards I don't think "steer left". I think steer forward and know to use my front hand (my left hand)
      2:
      Get in the habit of thinking where you're gonna steer your kite during your trick before you perform the trick. Every trick can be planned before you even go for it. It's a routine at the end of the day and we practice and develop that routine.

  • @strekke1986
    @strekke1986 Рік тому +1

    Not getting the kite back above your head after a take off/rotation gone wrong is definitely one that can hurt. Totally disoriented pulling the wrong side of the bar = involuntary, slow, big-arc kiteloop while flying backwards and/or upside down makes a for a pretty hectic landing that will knock the wind out of you...

    • @gethighwithmike
      @gethighwithmike  Рік тому +2

      So true hey! It's so easy to mix left and right when you're rotating, so I realize the tip sounds 'easier said than done'. But I think people let go of the bar too often in stead of learning how to steer their way to safety

  • @TheChupacabra

    What are your thoughts about the strap thightness? I have broken my foot because it remained stuck in the stap While the other one went out. Since I started boardoffs (landed it, thanks for the tips in the vid:D!) its alot looser, and now when one foot shoots out the otherone has room to rotate if the board flips away. Feels alot safer.

    • @gethighwithmike
      @gethighwithmike  Рік тому +2

      That's a great question! I think that it's safer to have at least a little bit of wiggle room so your feet can come out.
      The other thing to consider is that if they're too loose, you're at risk of one coming out more often.
      At the end of the day, I recommend getting good at ditching the board 🙏🕺

    Hey bro... I have difficulty to do spins as I jump higher, I get a bit lost with the kite position and eventually loop it unintentionally.... any tips?

    • @gethighwithmike
      @gethighwithmike  Рік тому

      Yes sure! I suggest riding with your hands right in the middle of the bar. Also it's good to start mapping (in your mind) that your left hand is going to steer the kite forward, and your right hand steers it back (when riding left). The alternative is to think front hand steers it forward and back hand steers it back, but this mapping is incorrect when you're half way through a rotation. Does that make sense?
