- Опубліковано 27 лип 2024
- There are many spoken and unspoken rules when it comes to kitesurfing. As a beginner, you may run into some difficulty, or perhaps an embarrassing situation or two, if you don’t know these rules (or 'commandments' as we like to call them). It’s also not a bad idea to have a quick refresher every so often as an experienced kitesurfer. So here are our top ten commandments for kitesurfing - enjoy!

Bought my first wetsuit back in 1985 and have windsurfed and later kitesurfed all year around ever since. I have never once peed in a wetsuit. I don't pee in my regular pants or my bed either, no matter how busy I am at work or how comfortable the bed feels.
spotted one of the latter
guys do not pee all the time it is girls problem.
I never thought of the swim back would be so brutal I hope I never lose the wind
One person in our group took a lesson in Oregon when he was still learning. He rented all the equipment including a drysuit. He had only worn wetsuits before.
After the lesson he was stripping off his drysuit in the kite shop and there was a gush of liquid onto the floor.
ahahahaha
Great job with this video! Important info and very well presented. I’m adding this to my lesson plan in addition to my “Five Golden Rules” of kiteboarding. Thanks guys.
Thank you! Glad you like it!
Thanks! Well done, nice and light, and all good points.
Thanks :)
One of your best videos so far (and I have watched all of them)! Combines wisdom and humor....
The most controversial is probably #1 - boardshorts over boring black wetsuits are a fashion statement, and you look quite cute with the bikini on top! Let's start a trend! Made in Canada... Keep up the great work!
Thanks Gunther! #1 is definitely proving to be the most controversial so far judging by comments :)
Very entertaining video! Good review of important information in a comical and light hearted manner. Great job guys! 👍👍😂
Thanks Ted :)
My favorite kiteboarding videos by far. Love your personality!Next video, prevention maintenance, please.
Thanks so much :)
Great video... I agree with the wind direction change issues l, we get use to going one way and its hard to change that behavior 🤙🏻🌴🦑🐙🦈
Great video!! So funny and very informative. Thanks!!
Thanks!
Love these video! Great job, I always learn something.
Brilliant video! Love the content - will be sharing with our communities here in NZ.
At the end of the day everyone wants to have golden time on the water without any hassles.
I'm guilty of laughing it peeps who wear boardies over their wetsuit - but recently I have discovered how this may have helped prevent shells carving out poo-holes in my wetsuit... 😐
If you've got a new wetsuit and you're riding in shallow/ shelly spots where you may but check from time to time - wear board shorts.
If you're a female rider - wear a g-banga...
I will not give up my boardshorts over the wetsuit for the sole reason - pocket. I keep all my keys in there, stored in waterproof cell phone case. Plus I keep a soft bottle with water. It's convenient. If not for the shorts I don't know where I'd put it all. Some people put their keys under the wetsuit at the chest area, but I find such idea really sketchy.
ADD: Also considering knowing the limits and conditions. This weekend I've seen the guy struggling launching his FS Speed. He got dragged across the field multiple times, not even inflating his kite completely. Ended up ejecting it entirely, otherwise he'd end up on the power lines. Later I heard it was 21m. In 12-14 knots wind. Dude had a death wish.
I'd be scared to keep anything in shorts pockets, but if it works for you then who am I to argue? If I need to use a pocket, I use the mesh pocket on the high hook vest
My 21m is fine and manageable till it goes above 23kt. 200lbs. I have a lot of fun on it towards the upper end. Float forever.
@@OurKiteLife keys destroyed my mesh pocket
Hydration pack. 20 dollars Walmart. Tube over your shoulder with mouth squeeze nozzle. Pop it in your mouth quick and you then have hands free access to 2 liters of water. Also has a pocket for keys etc.... I have a 3” porcelain knife in sheath secured to strap. I am still mystified as to why in 6 years I only remember seeing one other dude with a hydration pack. Makes KBing so much nicer.
Also I am with Extraace. ‘Small’ dude had a death wish. I also have a 21 meter Speed, but weigh 220 plus. In 12-14 knots, I would be fine. An average guy’s dangerous is a heavyweight’s necessary power.
Big like! Good mix of serious tips and those with 😉
Big thumbs up!
The bikini over the neo is nice idea😊🤣
Thanks! :)
Number 5. So true. I’ve screwed myself by clicking ‘going’. It’s always ‘maybe’ now. 😂
We’ve all been there at some point 😄
#1 - Long pants were fashionable for a while, in early the 2000's. There's some hilarious photos around the web.
Hmm, I might have to bring them back :)
Such a great video spot on everything
Thanks! :)
I agree all the way with each one. Especially the non-help one. On my last session it was 30+ knots and there were only 5 people on the water, with me. The beach was very crowded and there was plenty guys that actually could help you. No one even tried. After a kite fallen into some bushes, they rushed to help him, when one person would be fine, and the rest could help others. In fact, i finally got some help landing a kite, but who knows, maybe a little longer and thikks could end real bedly….
It's crazy how that happens, isn't it? It's like everyone assumes someone else will help, and then nobody does... hopefully that will change though!
haha im still laughing at #1 ... im going to have to re-watch because i didnt see anything after that! great vid guys! wish i was there when you filmed #1 rofl
Haha, we had to swear a couple people to secrecy when filming that part ;)
very well worded and put together!
Thanks :)
Wow! Beautiful, smart, funny, AND a kiter! She’s a unicorn!
I still cant believe there are only 6k subs on this awesome channel! Keep up the good work. PS 4K would be nice!
Thanks :)
Shorts protect my wetsuit ass. While I'm chilling on shore or I'm dragged around on shallow water.
Excellent vid and information. Quality presentation 👍
Thanks Stewart! :)
@@OurKiteLife no worries. Keep up the good work
Sometimes when I kite surf and the conditions are right and there *IS* help around, I do self-launch and self-land just because I want to practice it. Obviously it is much better to practice it when there are others around so that you are more confident once you are alone.
Really nicely put together vid. Bravo
Thanks!
Learned a lot in this vid 😬( still a beginner) you should go over some kitemares in the next episode! Keep up the work 👌
Thanks! Glad it was helpful :)
AMAZING VIDEO AND VERY fUNNY. pLEASE KEEP THAM COMING!!!
Thanks!! 😊
Thanks for the commandments! You're just awesome!
Thanks, glad you liked them!
Great video(s) !
Laurie, tell us more about how many times you kite, when, where , etc :-)
Thanks Laurent! You can find the answers to those questions in the other videos ;)
Super video. 😎👍👏👏👏
Thanks :)
The whole country of Portugal approves of this.
...And I mean EVERYONE that's on the water.
I’m a windfoiler in the U.K. but I always watch your videos, lots of your tips are useful for windsurfers as well. Can you make a vid about hard shell harnesses? What do you think of them and do they make a difference? Always wondered about the board shorts! Keep up the great work.
Thanks! We’ve been curious about hard shell harnesses too - if we can get our hands on a couple we’ll make a video 😀 cheers!
You're the best!
Nah, you’re the best! :)
It’s very good important to keep hydrated after a session with a cold beer.
nice video. The Sbend with a bush ending was hilarious. What's the music instrumental... it rings a bell but I can't manage to remember where I heard it...? thx
ok got it, video of last december from Ralph Boelen. very good choice ;)
ua-cam.com/video/1fKQqJGmSVg/v-deo.html
Lol love the pinks over the wetsuit 😂
I agree with everything except the first. I often kite (and used to windsurf) in conditions where the water is REALLY cold (e.g. mountain lake in spring time) but the sun is really intense and air temperature is way up already (southern location). When in the water (e.g. waterstarting, swimming or even self rescuing) I definitely need the wet suit. But when out of the water (e.g. riding) I quickly overheat. The board short + Lycra layer OVER the wet suit gives me a perfect cooling (via wind chill) when out of the water / riding but doesn't affect the warmth of the wet suit when in the water. So yes, I wear board shorts and Lycra OVER the wet suit and girls should as well ... wearing a bikini may not be so efficient ;-) If you kite in very cold weather (e.g. freezing temperatures) consider a smoothskin instead of fabric lined suit and skip the shorts and Lycra ;-)
Thanks for the tip! 🙂
I sometimes wear board shorts, especially on down winders so I can carry my rope and carabiner, money for beers, phone for ride back and something to wear if I want to take off my wetsuit. I didn’t think of it as a fashion faux pas. 😬
Of all the commandments not to follow, the board shorts one is the most forgivable ;)
@@OurKiteLife I want to make it up there and say I kited Canada. I have cousins in Toronto. My parents Brother and sister were born in Canada so I consider myself Canadian!! If you ever want to hit NJ for some great kiting let me know i can hook you guys up!
@@OurKiteLife Hmmm. I'm be more forgiving of those that don't follow #9. Your buddy's pee stained wetsuit isn't the best accessory for your campervan.
Great advice, however I have just one small remark. Could you maybe lower the background music in the next videos? It was at some moments difficult hear you talk :)
Thanks for the feedback! We'll adjust for future videos :)
I stick to all except #1
I wear a board short, because
1. I don't give a shit how I look on the water
2. I use a seat harness (see 1. above) and want to protect my wetsuit.
same here. On or off the water it helps. A bikini over a wetsuit on or off the water looks naff. A female in a boardshort over a wetsuit, not quite the same click value. Almost the same as Uggs off the water in a wetsuit :) @4:14
Excellent presentation... so much to learn ~ But the teacher here is a super hero in her wetsuit. So funny watching the Bikini over the wetsuit...love love love the sense of humor ~ wonderful ! Thanks + Aloha !
Thanks! Just having some fun :) aloha!
Thanks !
No board shorts over wet suit is good when you in deep water with a sandy beach. Here on the south coast of the UK lots of gravel bars full of mussels Shorts last about 6 months before they are not worth repairing any more. I could just go out to deeper water but love the big flat water witch just happen to be shallow.
Fair enough - we were just poking fun at the “look” but have come to learn it’s practical for many kiters :)
Love #5! 😂
I have learn't so much by watching your videos.
Just great advice all around thank you!!
Thank you :)
Love it! Still keeping the shorts over the wet suit though hehehe ;)
Are you sure you don't want to switch to bikini over wetsuit? ;)
I can’t believe going to the hot tub after a kiting session wasn’t in your 10 commandments!
We may just have to add an 11th commandment!
Our Kite Life, Amen to that!
One more thing about shorts. I agree, however, the exception would be choosing the integrated shorts/harness combination over a seat harness. There are a few riders at my local spot that use them, and I don’t hear them complaining about their harness riding up on nuking days, like I do. 🤦♂️
We’ll give them a free pass 😉
Wearing shorts over wetsuit is actually a very good idea for beginners who practice water starts in shallow water. It's so easy to make damage on ass level when kite pulls you. I have seen that few times. Nothing to do with fashion.
Good point we’ve heard echoed in the comments. In all honesty, we were just kidding but realize now many kiters are quite serious about their shorts :)
@@OurKiteLife True 😆 On the other hand I've heard guys saying they do not wear it anymore because they don't want to look like noobs. Respectable pro kiter attitude 😂
Nice video, cant agree more with your points. Remember guys do not break these rules, unless you want to be this guy who bring unwanted attention from wrong reasons 😊😂
Main reason to wear board shorts over the wet suit is because most of them come with a string in the pocket which allows you to secure your car key. As most wetsuits don’t have this you can easily solve the problem with a good pair of cheap board shorts.
Nice!
Very Nice
Great tips and footage. Shorts are for both genders and do protect the wetsuit. Please don't start a trend with the bikini over the wetsuit. Yikes.
Haha, thanks! Not sure we believe shorts protect the wetsuit though. As long as you wear your board shorts over your wetsuit, I'll wear my bikini over mine :P
@@OurKiteLife that's probably because you don't ride with boots. If you ride with boots on less than ideal beaches your backside ends up pretty leaky.
I don't use them myself anymore because it looks dumb but I do have to be a lot more careful as my local spots are all shale.
Good point - thanks for the insight!
Plenty of seat harness - in - shorts out there which are great. Plus not everyone is comfy in a bare wetsuit, be glad if you have a good beach bod! Talk about judgy and not in the spirit of kiting! As for not kiting alone, id never kite!
We’re just having some fun, no judgements here. Sorry if it came off that way
Thanks for the tips, I agree it looks silly but my board shorts protect my suit. Also self launching and landing is really safe, no risk of somebody letting your kite go before your ready. And nooooo don't pee in your wetsuit😝
Amen to #5!!
How hard can it be to add peehole in the wetsuit? i get it thar there is, no need while in the water, but waiting on beach for wind to pickup again in +5, that is something different
i have heard rumor that boardshorts over wetsuit for kite gang and no shorts for windsurfers.
but i wear my yellow shorts for added visibility, pink bikini would do the same trick ;)
Haha, right?! Especially if you kite all day in less than warm and sunny conditions... :)
Board shorts are often worn by dinghy sailers as when u hike, the wetsuit rubs against the deck. This is where it is heard from, as it does actually work
Verry good video
Thanks!
I often pee in my wetsuit as when I get excited I need to go. Even if I’ve just been recently, it still happens. I make a point of not doing it before getting into the water though.
Thanks
Rules of the Road, (rules of water sports courtesy).
5:29 Anyone know where this is?
Exuma, Bahamas
I have surfed for over 30 years. Never understood why kiters wear boardshorts over a wetsuit.
Read some of the comments here and you'll see some reasons why ;)
I like board shorts so I have some place to keep my earplugs and 10m of line in case of hydrofoil rescue because they have pockets. If my wetsuits had pockets probably wouldn't bother with boardies. Boardies are practical. I agree they don't look good, so black boardies work well. Doesn't matter if you have long or short leash always leash in front, even Hadlow leashes front. If you get in a death loop leashed from the back you won't be able to eject because the force of the water is stronger than a human's hands reaching backwards.
A wetsuit with pockets sounds like a great idea :)
Undecided about the front leash. I experienced a death loop once and it is true that I was unable to reach the quick release while being dragged backwards. I was "lucky" though and the kite got caught in barbed wire miliseconds before I would have been dragged over sharp rocks at astonishing speed.
On the other hand, fighter pilots and paratroopers learn to turn on their backs when the parachute catches wind after a water landing - it keeps the lungs free of water. So the the back leash might just as well have saved me from drowning.
Btw, I do wear board shorts when there's coarse sand at the beach and I honestly have never peed in my wetsuits.
I've been in a few loops gear failure chicken line wraps bridle wraps that kind of stuff. There is zero reason to back leash. It's the difference between ejecting in one second or teabagging and even sometimes being dragged underwater until you hit whatever is downwind.
@@OurKiteLife I know really
@@bonerici Agree. I'm smarter now; learned a lot that day.
Good tips, I am at a place where a lot of people are starting to show up. There is newbe and old windsurfing converts and a few Young guns .
All this mixing sometimes makes a big mess on the limited entry point
The Young guns want to show off all their unhooked tricks right at the shore.
The old windsurfing dudes think they know it all and won't give way or leave their gear everywhere. And the newbe wants to practice in front of the launch area.
It makes me want to find a new secluded spot.
Ah, sorry to hear that. It’s tough when there’s a clear divide on the beach but hopefully things will improve over time, or you find that perfect secluded spot :)
I really like your videos about kiting!😁 You seem like very nice person to hang out with!☺️
Oh thank you!
Commandment #5 you commit to any events after sunset ... and before dawn :-)
No night kiting? What will we do with all the glow sticks?
In my 5 year of riding, I have never peed in my wetsuit :D
🙂👍
Sven Clinckspoor then you’re not kiting long enough 😄
Yeah great tips do most of them always looking out for anyone in trouble (treat others as you'd like them to treat you).
Short leash is a must.. as for board shorts what? I ware board shorts mainly when I was learning as I trashed my wetsuit on shells, rocks and other stuff.. so you'd rather trash your wetsuit? Personally I'd rather trash the boardies..
Swim lol I've been on in out at sea nearly all my life (surfing, kayaking, winddurfing, kiting) and I cannot swim yeah I've had lessons but if I were to go out as far as I could swim I'd never do it, I love the sea, if one day it takes me at least I'd be doing something I love at that time... I hope to be like my mum and enjoy being in the sea in my late 70s hopefully still kiting 🤙😁
When it comes to swimming, if that’s the risk you’re willing to take, then we won’t argue you - it’s your call. We usually wear a life vest because the water can be very cold and deep... even still, treading water for over an hour to get to shore with your gear is so exhausting... having done it a few times I can say, for me, it’s not worth going really far out anymore. But to each their own (same with the board shorts 😉) A life by the water does sound great, cheers!
@@OurKiteLife
Very sensible response, and thank you for responding, nice one 😁
And just to make it sure: You never ever have to attach your leash at the back on this "leash-line"! Even for handlepasses there is no need. Just attach your leash (if you use a long one like I do) to the front (or side-ish front) of your harness and you are good to go. And as a proof: Aaron hadlow does this too ;-)
Agreed!
I'm too charmed to listen 😍
Short leash is great for safety, but make sure the release can’t get stuck or tangled in or under your harness hook. That’s potentially lethal. Yours looks to be that way.
Thanks for the comment! Since filming this we’ve switched for longer leashes :)
Boars shorts over wetsuits is an awesome dressing code. Don't care what you think. It will remains that way.
Kitesurfers wear shorts just as mountsin bikers dont wear tights. They are called courtesy shorts. :) similar to snowboarders in the 80s wanting to differentiate themselves from skiers, kitesurfers wanted to distance themselves from windsurfers that didnt respect the discipline. The board shorts trend however seems to be waning. I dont wear them as often anymore.
It’s split 50/50 locally, with about half the guys wearing them and the other half not. Judging by the comments here, a lot of people still really like wearing them :)
A short leash can be dangerous. If you accidentally unhook and the leash is attached to a kite that flags out on one powerline then there is the chance that the kite starts looping with your arms fully extended because the short leash is already pulling on one power line. I know a story in which this was sadly fatal to an intermediate kiter after launching on the beach.
Sorry to hear that, thank you for bringing it to our attention
Ho, wait a minute. In Holland we have had a long argument about short leases after a fatal accident. If your chickenloop unhooks and you hold on to the bar, the safety line can activate and make your kite uncontrollable, even if you let go of the bar and hold on to the qr, you still can loose control of the kite. Make sure you can handle the qr without pulling the safety line.
Interesting, never thought about it! Next question is then why are some brands pushing short leashes?
My Airush safetyline has about a meter of bungy before activating, so it is no problem. Just be aware and safe with your style of bar
always boardies over wetties , nice bright colors so you stand out on the water ,beside boardies = $20, weties = $200,also i prefer to kite alone, its better
Still have never peed in my wetsuit. Everything else I agree!
Impressive! :)
Fight the good fight. No coffee/beer before and while kiting and you won't need to pee.
For me it's the cold water. I'll pee right before the session, but the second I hit that cold water I have to go again lol
Our Kite Life... I second that ... practically impossible not to .. lol
@@OurKiteLife Depends on the spot, temperature of the water and air :-).
I only pee when there's sharks around, however don't come ashore with a completely empty bladder in case you have an unfortunate encounter with a Ray on the way out of the water, so you can pee on your own foot. Having others pee on it is not cool and you'll have to buy a couple rounds of beer after on top of the humiliation.
Hey thats Toronto, Longbranch?. I used to live down there but gave it up for California.
Haha - never thought about it in relation to sea life :D Yes - this is Long Branch!
Nice video (as always). But, I've got to wear board shorts over my wetsuit. ;)
That's totally cool, the board shorts was intended as a joke as it is such a polarizing topic
Agree 100%
1st Commandment broken at 4:13, woolly wellies over boots
If you don't wear woolly wellies to the beach, you're missing out ;)
Bikini over wetsuit... You killed me there 😂😂 new trend? I think so!
Haha you saw it here first! ;)
That bikini looks good over suit and adds color. The shorts add color as well to an otherwise black suit.
That’s true, but there are some wetsuits that have colour/aren’t all black :)
Commandment #9 ... questionable
Kite with the best, kite alone! 😅
2:00 "Russian Launch" is now official 😊🤙
Haha yup! 😄🤙
what is the Russian launch
@@Paul7mac You see the launch at 2:00. RL is when you start your kite direct from the center of the power zone. Only to do in very light wind conditions. I start my kites very often this way because I'm mostly foiling in light wind.
@@buenacloud ah its another name for a hot launch. Cheers man.
@@Paul7mac Yep. You are right.
Great video. Good advice for all! Yes I admit it, I do pee in wetsuit.
"Diffusion of responsibility"! Yes ...its happening. I kite at Valdevaqueros, crowded and super gusty so fast landing is necessary as sometimes the wind just dies and kites drop. Amazing how the kooks standing on the beach chatting and doing their best to ignore kites looking to land don't realise they are endangering themselves!! Maybe caused by diffusion of intelligence? The logical consequence is more people self launching and self landing too ....
They’re endangering themselves and it creates a culture where people don’t want to help others because they haven’t been helped. That does lead to self launching and landing, and a more individualistic kite community - which is too bad in our opinion as the community can be one of the best parts of the sport
@@OurKiteLife ...which is why reminders like yours are great! Keep up the good work and thanks to all those 'Kite Landers' out there! If we all keep reminding people will get the message ;)
What is a russian launch? Sounds risky.
Another name for hot launch :)
I kite alone b/c too many people on the water tend to get too close to each other on the water
boardshorts protection wetsuits.
commandment #1 is a joke. Here in the south the water is warm almost all year round, but still there are days that might require some protection from weeds, jellyfish etc. so I never actually wear a wetsuit, rather I wear a thin black Tommy copper core compression tight which works like a wetsuit but much thinner and therefore I always wear a pair of board shorts over this because it looks and feels good, I feel like a surfer when I put on a pair of board shorts and psychologically that gets me going, if I didn’t, I’d be that guy who wears the tights with my junk all out and bulging ands that’s not cool , this isn’t ballet, it’s kitesurfing, so wear your board shorts over your compression gear and you’ll be ready for your session. For you cold weather northerners, I don’t see anything wrong with donning your Hurley’s atop thee wetsuit, ride on! This isn’t a fashion show, it’s kitesurfing
Yes, commandment #1 is a joke ;)
Our Kite Life I kinda figured. Hey great content, I enjoy the show. Keep up the good work and come kite in Pompano Beach some time.
Thanks! If you’re ever in Toronto come kite with us :)
👏❤️
“Shorts over wetsuit .. female point of view” absolutely hilarious 👍👍😂😂
😄🤙
@@OurKiteLife I like it. Hahaha
I wear my boardshorts because my wetsuit doesn't fit as nice as yours. :P
Good video. :)
Thanks 🙂
great tip i am good ridder but dont share my beer🤪
Haha - that's fine, but if you don't share your beer then no one will share their beer with you :P
