    One of the Shadowrun core books had a great little vignette of a runner suffering from that universe's equivalent of cyberpsychosis. It wasn't a _fun_ read, but it gave a lot of insight into the mindset of someone chromed up to the brink.
    The poor guy was practically nose-diving into depression. It's hard to articulate, but he was seeing everything as less and less real. A slug of whiskey? Toxin filters and balance augments compensate for the alcohol. Smash the bottle onto the table? Neuro-wiring turns off the pain from the broken glass cutting his hand, and platelet factories halt the bleeding immediately.
    Message from his girlfriend, practically begging him to leave the house because their friends haven't seen him in weeks?
    Mark as read, close messenger program.

      To be fair though, the essence(SR) and humanity(CP) stats are important to keep in mind on that topic. In both systems once you hit a certain point of crome you're basically driven insane because you're less human than you are machine. It effectively "kills" your character. Likely by suicide because the brain just can't handle the constant experience of gaslighting that the augments cause.

    • @tba113
      @tba113 3 роки тому +4

      @@Ryuondo Well, yeah: Essence and Humanity are how the games' rules reflect that. In the Shadowrun version, there's also the added factor that leading up to that point of zero (or negative) Essence, NPCs start to get weirded out by heavily chromed characters, which could easily lead to a self-destructive mental feedback loop. (I haven't played tabletop Cyberpunk, so that system probably has something very similar; I'm just not familiar enough with that side to comment.)
      Jumping RPG systems _again,_ the old 2E Ravenloft rules had some pretty spot-on rules for a character suffering from depression. Not the mindset side of it, exactly, but rules for things like having to be all but dragged into doing anything, but they were so halfhearted about it that even in actual, adrenalin-pumping combat, they were still just so consumed by a bitter sense of "why bother" that they had noticeable penalties to their initiative, attack, and defense.
      I would guess most cyber-zombies were similar, so detached from a normal person's perspective that everything they did became robotic and perfunctory: they do things because some outside force is making them do it, not because they particularly _want_ to themselves. Those particularly far gone might even be a bit confused by a question of what they _wanted_ to do. ...Though unlike a Ravenloft character who'd Seen Too Much, a cyber-zombie's augments would still make even a halfhearted fight against them absolutely terrifying.

      Shadowrun Dragonfall shows this instance in a side-mission, where you're asked to "recover" some Corp weapons-tech. It gives glimpses from an outsider perspective as to what happens to those who become "Cyberzombies". Spoilers past this point...
      So it happens to be a Troll, chromed up so much that your team think they reanimated a body with cyber and you steadily realise that he's still alive, being controlled by the equipment you were provided before the mission. If you choose to free him the first thing he does is grip his head with both arms and crushes it, ending his suffering.

      @tba113 3 роки тому +2

      @@tiarnano8878 Turns out I was off in some details - see the full vignette transcribed below - but I tracked it down. It's an in-universe fluff intro for a chapter entitled 'Cybertech' in the 4th Edition expansion book 'Augmentation'. The book isn't really a core rule book (and hasn't been current since about 2013 in any case, since Shadowrun is two years into its _6th_ Ed), but it gives tons of optional special rules and expansions for a lot of cyberware, bioware, genetech, nanoware, along with a couple other fields that don't fit cleanly into those categories, like full-body cyborg conversions, biodrones, and cybermancy. About half of the stuff in the book, maybe more, is too specialized to be very useful, or are the sort of thing more suited to being used by NPCs or for world-building, but the rest fill in a lot of gaps the core rulebook's selections of 'ware kind of leave open.
      Useful stuff - but the price tag for the best 'ware is in more than just nuyen...
      "Sometimes I wonder what I've done.
      She called again this morning. I didn't answer. I didn't know what to say to her. Didn't know what I _could_ say.
      I'm drunk again. This room stinks like booze and stale cigarette smoke and machine oil. I sit on the edge of the bed, my hands spasming through my hair. Even my hair is fake. What kind of messed-up shit is that - fake hair? My fingers twitch involuntarily, and I turn down the reaction setting with a flick of my mind. I stare unblinkingly at the bottle on the table. That was one of the things that freaked her - the fact that I never blinked. I tried to make myself do it at first, but after awhile it didn't seem worth the effort anymore. If she really loved me, she'd have lived with it. The bitch should have -
      Fuck.
      There I go again.
      It's happening again. It happens too often these days.
      I fumble for the bottle and snatch it up. Dammit, I had to do it. I had to keep the edge. You fall behind the SOTA in this biz, you die. When you look at it that way, a little loss of humanity makes a lot of sense. You want to lose some of it, or all of it? It's not like I can quit. It's not like she didn't know she wasn't going to get the picket fence and the 2.5 kids with me.
      Still, I thought we were in it for the long haul. She was my center - the only one I could go to when things got too bad and this fucking business started to smother me. She was the one who talked me down when my brain wouldn't stop whirling. She argued hard against me taking this next step, didn't understand why I had to. She tried, but I saw her eyes when she looked at me. People think that because I've got all this chrome in me, I don't feel. I'm not some fucking cyberzombie. I'm still human.
      More than human. Or maybe less.
      Either way, I'd give it all up to go back two days in time. Before that idiot flirted with her in the bar. Before I -
      My teeth grit. The red haze hits again. The bottle shatters into shards as my hand - my chrome-and-circuitry, state-of-the-art technological wonder of a hand - clenches around it. Without even thinking I adjust my pain receptors to dull the sting, watching idly as blood pools in my palm and drips onto the broken glass on the floor. Watching like it's somebody else's hand.
      Which, up until a couple of weeks ago, it was. How much of me used to belong to somebody else? How much of me is even still the guy she used to care about? At least the blood's still mine - for now.
      The comm buzzes again. It's her.

      And the fact that augments do cause derealization via not being a 1:1 replication: "gee, my new arm doesn't feel quite right, and the feeling is slowly bothering me more and more". sure, some chrome is easy to deal with and the magnitude of the "off feeling" stops increasing eventually, but some people feel the growing void and think the answer is to get more chrome installed.

    The internet is totally an augmentation of our minds in that it exposes us to so much more information than we could ever physically access. I'm pretty sure internet psychosis exists and I've almost had it before.
    During the worst times of the lockdowns when I was the most online I've ever been, I wouldn't hang out with ANYBODY and would just dive SO deep into so many different rabbit holes, some of which definitely weren't good for me. The loss of humanity in cyberpsychosis reminds me of the way I felt my cognition being replaced by the 'online discourse' and when I would talk to people about internet topics, they would start to look at me like I was an alien. But it was the only thing going on in my head!
    I really lost touch with my real-world life, my health tanked, I came really close to relapse a couple times, which probably would have ended up with me losing everything. I finally started snapping out of it when work hours picked back up and social events started happening again, but looking back it was actually a pretty disturbing time.

    • @asahearts1
      @asahearts1 Рік тому

      Yes, this is what they call "terminally online." I blame parents not letting their kids play outside anymore. I noticed that parents won't let their kids talk to people in their neighborhood, but will let them talk unsupervised to strangers online. Basically people are getting it from both sides by being alienated from their community while being pushed into unhealthy and unnatural interactions through technology.

    Cyberpsychosis is when your character has more points in cybernetics than empathy. Solo class (fighter) is the one class that benefits most from augments. Trickier to do that in Cyberpunk Red (the latest edition of the tabletop game, came out about a month before 2077) unless you use the Complete Package method of character creation (which is basically “everything is point-buy”) and, even then, you still suffer some permanent Humanity Loss for each piece of ‘ware regardless of how much therapy you get. A low Humanity meant that you were terrible at most forms of social interaction from questioning someone to trying to talk down a hostage-taker. It's basically just Psychopathy on steroids, and most psychopaths are undetectable. The main point emphasised in the book is that it's about seeing yourself and others as "things"; breakable, replaceable things.
    The best example of a cyberpsycho who can be reasoned with is in the side job "Violence".

    In the original RPG Cyberpunk 2020 there was an adventure where there is a surge in Cyberpsychosis among the Booster gangs and at the same time a anti cyborg religious group (called the Inquisitors) was protesting the widespread use of cybernetics.
    Yep [obvious much], in the end it turns out the Inquisitors were supplying sabotaged cyberwear (several cheap brands popular with gangs) that caused the user to fall into Cyberpsychosis fast due to hidden control chips.
    They were selling them to a very nasty Booster gang that knew the score, but would still sell them on the underground market to other gangs … cause they were very nasty.
    If you got evidence of this those two very heavily armed groups (one without any cyberwear, one with lots) would be mad at you for a little while, but then _their_ troubles would really multiply as *everyone else* was mad at them.
    And you would be rewarded from, and _owed favours by,_ the Max Tac squad, the police in general, the ripper doc community and the other booster gangs - especially the really violent heavily cybered ones.
    All in all, useful groups to be in the good graces of.
    And did I mention the cash?

    People who live older than 100 years show alternative to cybernetics.
    Emotion and learning. A person with a PhD in math, chemistry, and physics as well as an engineering degree has a massive advantage in developing alternatives to cybernetics.
    Emotion allows a person who is calm to store spirit aka electrical field that technology depletes. Emotional feedback to body makes a person able match cybernetics.

    how to avoid Cyberspychosis: *don't* become a cyborg.
    if you choose to, or must become a cyborg, to life threatening injuries, do so in a place that will get it right the first time. such places include your local Skynet TS-300 recruitment center, (TS-300s are Human/Terminator hybrids) Men of Iron STC factory, or Ferrus Manus' Iron Hands.
    "They are not my hands. This fact is forgotten by my brothers -- inexplicably, it has always seemed to me. The hands are strong, to be sure, and have created great things for us all, but they are not mine. And that counts for something. They forget that the silver on my arms comes from a beast that I vanquished. It is the mark of a great evil that I ended, and yet it persists within me...I would struggle to remove it now...I will not remove the silver from my flesh because I have learned to depend on it. The fault is with my mind. I rely on the augmentation given to me by my metal gauntlets, so much so that the flesh beneath them is now little more than a distant memory...A day will come when I will strip it from me, lest I lose the power to master myself forever. Already my Legion's warriors replace their shield hands with metal in my honour, and so they too are learning to doubt the natural strength of their bodies. They must be weaned off this practice before it becomes a mania for them. Hatred of what is natural, of what is human, is the first and greatest of the corruptions. So I record it here: when the time comes, I will strip my hands of their unnatural silver. I will instruct my Legion to recant their distrust of the flesh. I will turn them away from the gifts of the machine and bid them relearn the mysteries of flesh, bone and blood. When my father's Crusade is over, this shall be my sacred task. When the fighting is done, I shall cure my Legion and myself. For if fighting is all there is, if we may never pause to reflect on what such devotion to strength is doing to us, then our compulsion will only grow." - Ferrus Manus, Primarch of the Tenth Space Marine Legion

    CP 2077, through various sources, implies that cybernetics aren't quite as compatible with the nervous system as natural flesh, and puts a bit of extra stress on it. Especially if the cyberwear is of low quality and/or isn't installed cleanly. That generally causes any existing mental issues to become even worse.

    So he's super accurate on symptoms of the cyberpsychosis; put simply its hysteria (a violent mental break) induced by cybernetic integration...but why?
    Personally i believe an anime called "no gun life" has it best for explained. In the show they explain it as artificial stress overloading the brain. The reason is because new cybernetics are artificial limbs replacing old one; in which the brain is forced to do something unnatural thus needing more focus and ultimately building stress. That stress with slowly build until ultimately that individual snaps.
    Cyberpunk shows it well as more chromed chooms become extremely agitated and violent overtime with more additions. It can also be induced by a sudden overload of drastic changes such as david mecha instillation.
    There's also numerous ways of reducing this stress with therapy being a healthy primary. Other options are less reliable like: Internal regulators (very expensive), murder and violence (releasing steam too relax), or drugs & sex (forcing chemical relaxation like maelstrom). Ultimately it's based entirely on how you handle mental stress which is why we see mercs so chromed up.
