I think this is one of the best videos I've seen recently or in some time on UA-cam. Eric and Trevor are a great combination and if I'm in the Florida area i would love to get a lesson
Probably the best hip rotation explanation / tutorial for the golf swing I've ever seen... and I watch a ton of videos on it over the years lol... well done, gonna start trying this at the range and can't wait!
I really like Trevor's approach to swing changes, he stresses the most important keys with a simple drill and explanation. Thanks for a great job. At 79 I need Simple!
I watched this a day ago and went to the range to try this. I didn’t realize how tense I was. I started to relax and all I say is WOW! This also helped my son that is just getting into golf! Another awesome video!
Yeah I like that tip about feeling what works for your body. I’ve explored a few feels in my swing and I feel my swing a lot in my right elbow and pulling my ass back in down swing. You really hammer home the vitals like weight forward early, right elbow tucked in at address, not swaying the hips, shallowing the club etc etc. All been very beneficial to my swing. Love your content mate! Cheers
I second this. I had the starter at my local muni come up to me one time while I was doing warm up swings with my driver and tell me I was flaring my lead knee out too much (it's how I get rotation with limited hip mobility) and him saying that got deep into my swing thoughts and ruined my golf game for a full week. It's really nice to hear a good coach say to do what works.
This is so awesome Guys! I´ve just started to get rid of too much tension in my swing. And voilá - less early release and much better strikes! Thank you for your help!
Ok. Each of you have great videos on your respective channels. I learn a lot from both of you. But together you guys are awesome! Props to both of you for sharing this space in tandem. This one is going with me to the range tomorrow. Thank you both.
Another good session Eric. You and Trevor Work comfortably together> He's so loosey goosey it's unbelievable which adds a different element to the lesson. Be good-Russ
Cracking advice. I've known for a loong time that tension is the enemy of ALL sporting movements: from my golf to my motorcycle road racing. But as a bloke moving towards sixty my hips are a little dicky & I've become way too armsy in my swing. I really like tips two & in particular three, Thanks guys, something to work on.
This video was a game changer for me! Thank you so much! I was able to GROOVE my full swing in the living room using a putter and the line on the putter would effortlessly go directly through my line established at address! ....Almost like a perfect putting stroke... I was thinking that step 3 should almost become step 2 (swap them) because the stretch that he describes in step 3 transition will help increase speed when you go after the ball close to impact as described in step 2. Thanks Again!!
Great video again Eric - I like pairing the tension-free/slowing arms feel from this video, with the 3 sections of core you use to feel rotation in another one of your videos. The attention to detail in these videos have helped my ball striking come a long way.
I have always struggled with the hip turn. My biggest fault is throwing the arms and hands from the top. I will certainly try this and hope it will help me FEEL what I need to do. Thanks for the insight.
I love this feel of moving a spot on the lead thigh as a downswing trigger. I find that this feel, done smoothly, also works well for me as a backswing trigger. Using this move just naturally encourages a tension free swing. I always give my swing triggers names that encourage a smooth and not overdone move. Thinking "SPOTTY", works for me.
Brilliant video my coach says stay loosey goosey! Soft arms and hands works wonders. I struggle with getting stuck on my trail side and the club crashing behind the ball so demoralising when you’ve smashed a drive. @eric Any videos on how to move better and earlier?
Hey Scott! yes for sure but honestly need to see your swing to see WHY thats happening for you to say for sure how to fix (or send a good vid on how) If you dont get it sorted send videos to www.cogornogolf.com to we can FIND and FIX root issue of that
Having an awful time of starting my downswing with my arms, have a hard time feeling how to rotate my hips to start with arms following. This video i think is best broken down version of trying to do that. Hitting the local practice simulator tonight to give it a go. Tension free memo to myself 😂
100% agree with this as the contact is clean and distance can be long due to the lag.. my trouble in taking this loose feel onto the course as I then don’t know my distances !!!
We all think about greater control in the golf swing. But the excitement of the game quickly gets us away from being more conservative in the swing. But thinking about an action that reflects upon our sense of self respect can keep us controlled in the swing. At 9:26 the remarks about how we move our hands to our face was a very memorable thought. I think it can be part of the cornerstone of a consistent controlled swing.
This is exactly what I'm always working on these days. When I clear my hips and shoulders properly, the shots are way more likely to be accurate...on target. When my hips and shoulders don't come through properly, I'm way more likely to pull the ball....as the club comes through before the body does.
I see a ton of content on the sequence of the downswing and emphasizing,as you did, the lower body moving earlier than the upper body. My question is, on the takeaway do you also want the right leg/pelvis to go earlier than the arms to trigger the takeaway? Seems to make sense in order to properly sequence the backswing but I’d love to hear your take on that. Great video. Thank you.
Hey Mike! Its a little bit of the FEET first and then the rest FEELING likes its moving in one unit. The backswing to downswing speed is like 3:1....the sequencing like this produces speed which is needed on way down but not back. It also helped with shallowing the angle of the shaft....also important on the way down but not back hope that helps
Yep...judging from the comments below I am in good company. Took a number of these ideas to the range today and hit into a very stiff wind...relaxing. Freaking great lesson. This idea of delay of the arms is crucial. By totally relaxing it is possible. Add my name to this great string of comments in saying that this was a very valuable source of information. Reading "The Inner Game of Golf" by Timothy Gallwey. I have to admit that I was really sceptical at first but I will say it is worth the read and I am only a third of the way through it. It goes hand and hand with the ideas in this video. Also "Mike Maggs" golf online has some super videos along the line of "Golf for Idiots" that I have found to be very enlightening. Handicap dropped from 6.7 to 3.3 virtually overnight. Headed lower! Look out below! Thanks Eric.
@@CogornoGolf Judging from your comment at the beginning, "this is my favorite video ever about leading with the hips" I am in great company here. You knew you nailed it. I'm bookmarking this as my mantra. Thanks Man!
The body is electrical. Thought leading to action occurs instantaneously. We can summon the strength we need instantaneously. At the top of the backswing we need to feel for the hips completing the backswing and beginning the downswing. Ben Hogan said that the hips were passive at the beginning of the backswing. I think what he meant was that the hips were the last movement in the backswing.
Eric and Trevor can you speak to the "adding speed at the bottom" in relation to "posting or bracing" the lead leg for the release? Dr. Rose over at TPI (among others) would say that bracing and/or straightening the lead leg is what allows the hands to slow down and therefore transfer energy up the chain to the club to fire through the hitting area. How does that all mix? I know it does jsut not sure how.... thanks!!
I'm 51 yrs old and I carry 60lbs more than when I was in high school, I can hit 250 still, I recently started back after 25yrs , I had almost forgot everything I learned as a youth golfer. These tips have helped tremendously, I'm still not getting pure hits, I think I can still reach 300yrs. Tempo, timing, feel, and no tension have been the keys in my relearning.
Eric this is great! What would you say is the grip pressure (out of 10) throughout the swing sequence? I feel there are different points of the sequence where pressure would be less and more. (E.g. takeaway could be more of a 3 whereas initial pressure of lead foot to initiate downswing might be more of a 6?)
Hey Eric, great video!! Something is resonating with me about what you all said so this is great! Is this the same for Hybrids and Fairway Woods?? Driver?? am I using the same feels??
Hey! Trevor and I talk about that in one of our videos like this but frankly Im not sure which one to link it for ya :) But you turn on the speed starting with the body.....pelvis, ribcage, chest turning and extending AND letting it rip with the arms/club at bottom
I have one for you. At driving range with grandson, using my new TM SIM Max 2, hitting so-so drives...he hands his TM R7 driver that is pretty old and I start striping drives down the middle like 220, 230 ....crazy, I think the new tech is B.S.!!!!
I’m confused, I’ve heard the opposite about femur rotation. Rory will actually internally rotate and plant his lead heel towards the target (internal) so that the only way his lead hip can go is behind him. Although these other clips of pros seem to be doing what you’re saying.
I feel like I improve iron play at the detriment of driving and vice versa. I watch videos like this, see them using an iron and think it’s only applicable to iron play. Is this something that would also apply to a drive? Is the actual swing the same is it just the moving of weight that differs?
That’s great Eric, I really appreciate your reply. I’ll try to focus on that in my next range session. Love the videos, only found your channel recently but this one broke down the movement in a way I’ve not thought about it before. Keep up the great work
I'll have to watch it again, but I don't think I heard the word struggle or struggling in this entire video. Thank you for not using the worst word in golf instruction.
Its really timing issue. The slingshot or the coil is what creates that natural speed and lag. You gotta stop the lower body moving and then arms at the point where your own mobility lets you and transition into downswing. It feels effortless when done correctly.

You have to be tension free only on the backswing. Once you start into downswing the grip has increase and at impact you have to feel your trail hand gripping the club more than your lead hand to really create that follow through and strike it hard. If the gripnis loose through impact you get open club face.

Thanks George!
I'd start here for managing/squaring the club face:
ua-cam.com/video/fCW9W_lGQtM/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
Let us know if any questions!
Yeah thats common.....you will likely have to CONSCIOUSLY add some squaring...
You have to be tension free only on the backswing. Once you start into downswing the grip has increase and at impact you have to feel your trail hand gripping the club more than your lead hand to really create that follow through and strike it hard. If the gripnis loose through impact you get open club face.
