  • Here are examples of 12 different types of metal screams that will help you distinguish fry scream from false chord!
Fry scream is created by fast, chaotic and irregular vibrations of the vocal cords.
Fry scream is characterized by a sharp and compressed sound and a wide spectrum of registers that can be used during a scream. This technique works well for extremely high screams (e.g. "banshee scream"), mid screams, low screams and gutturals.
Many people around the world find it difficult to master the fry scream because it requires good coordination of chaotically vibrating vocal folds, airflow, breath support and compression, and it's very easy to push too hard, use too much or too little breath, energy etc.
Unlike fry scream, the false chord is based on engaging the vestibular folds, also known as the ventricular or false vocal cords. It is these which give us scream and growl in the false chord technique.
The vestibular folds are structures located above the vocal folds. They are separated by the laryngeal ventricles. Vestibular folds include vestibular muscles, whose main function is participating in the protective closure of the larynx. When the vocal folds have reduced phonatory capacity, they can assist in phonation. While the vocal cords have a mechanism that changes their stiffness, thickness, and length, mainly through the thyroarytenoid muscle, vestibular folds cannot tense because they contain very few muscle fibers. These folds can only move thanks to the arytenoid cartilages. During normal phonation, they do not vibrate.
The most basic sound in the false chord technique is the fundamental growl. For most people, it's in the lower range and may initially seem airy (it can be fixed by practicing with the compression and aiming for a fuller, more condensed soud which is easier to achieve after mastering the basic false chord growl or scream).

This was awesome. On my journey to fry scream better but this showed me that some of this growls and false chords have came out for me while trying to get to the fry scream. Sometimes I get annoyed I can't hit the fry yet so I just do random noises and move pitch/tone around.

I've met several people who had the same experience - they tried to learn one technique but ended up learning something else. Last week I was practicing with a guy who had been practicing alone before and didn't know that instead of a false chord, he actually unlocked a fry scream :D While practicing together, we managed to unlock a false chord.
In my case, methods including the vocal break didn't work because my voice was switching to false chord. I needed a couple of weeks to break that habit.

@@sibilaextremevocal nice! I am still working on gluttoral compression to have a cleaner fry. I believe when I hit that I'll finally get a fry. But I do random noises and will close my eyes while making sounds to feel where in my throat it is being produced. The kagyraa is one of my favorite things to do now. Love how I can sound like a robot.

Hey man, could you do a video diving into The style of vocals used by Opeth? Everything leads me to believe that they're fry vocals but I'm having a hard time with them. I'd love to hear you dissect them and explain what's going on and how to get that sort of sound. Thanks man!

Hello! I also thought that those vocals are fry scream because that was the only way I could mimic them but it turned out that it's something a bit different because his voice seems to be moved back, like he was almost "swallowing it" which has a huge impact on the way how he sounds and sometimes he is engaging his arytenoid cartilages and false vocal folds. He is also using more air than it's necessary to produce a solid fry scream Here's a track with isolated vocals:
      ua-cam.com/video/CrudnuK6EIY/v-deo.html
Personally, if I wanted to create a style of vocals similar to his sound but in a more sustainable and safer way, I would practice fry scream with a deeper setting of my voice, a bit like the one used for opera singing.

@@sibilaextremevocal thank you so much for the he quick reply and for explaining so in depth! I tend to have a hard time moving my fry vocals down in pitch. I feel like I do fine in my "head register" but they lose their power and projection otherwise.

@@GabePerson in case of my students, those exercises help to achieve a lower, yet confident fry scream:
      ua-cam.com/video/yG3aeDx0Flg/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/Dwm-T6qq_98/v-deo.html
What helps is also being able to sing lower or with a darker sound color while having a proper resonance which helps the voice to sound full, firm and be free from constrictions.
