  • Here's my approach to CJ's unique scream. Keep in mind that I am not a vocal coach and that he might be using other techniques to achieve his sound. With that in mind I hope this tutorial helps and gives you new sounds to add into your own songs!

    CJ Does hardcore Tai'chi breath in before each scream and blows tons of air, sometimes keeps it in the back of the throat, but his raw vocals are quite loud because of tons of air , he also does great chest compression and overtones from nasal cavity.

Best way I can always explain it, is his vocals sound like a bleeding, mangled ass zombie who took a gunshot to his throat. Hello friend, I am writing to you from Spain. I've been creating these sounds with my mouth for a long time and the truth is that I get it, but... I can't find a way to stop my throat from hurting right away. Can you show us something about it? A hug , thank you!!!

    • @thierrypatenaude5680
      @thierrypatenaude5680  2 роки тому +1

      If it hurts there is a problem, maybe it’s because you engage your true folds, or maybe you don’t use your diaphragm properly (it’s hard to say). Go over the basics again (I know it’s annoying, but it’s necessary) Of course when learning it’s gonna be difficult to avoid hurting yourself, the important thing is to hydrate yourself and keep mental notes of what hurts and what doesn’t. I wouldn’t recommend practicing more than 30min at the beginning. At some point you’ll know where to push the air and what parts of your mouth/throat to engage in order to scream without hurting yourself. In order to practice using your diaphragm I would use a straw: You simply put the straw in your mouth and blow through it with good power for as long as you can (careful you might get shredded abs from this) You should be able to do it for a good 25 seconds when you practice it enough and for even longer when you master it. Also, don’t give up:)

    Awesome tutorial my guy and good production quality on it! I have a tip from myself how to make low tunnels even more disgusting. Again may not be for everyone because of mouths hape, resonance cavities and etc, but it works for me so might as well work for other people. What I do, i put my tongue like for guttural(below my upper teeth) but instead of doing guttural i disconnect my tongue from my teeth and hold it very forward below my teeth not touching them. This creates the same sound effect as tunnel throat but is much deeper because this tongue shape creates more space in the back of the throat for sound to resonate.

    Well to scream like him, you basicaly need to have the same voice or the same vocal anatomy. Using the same technique does not grant you the voice of your favorite vocalist. Each individuals have their voice and that's what makes you special you have your sound, and you sound amazing. And this is to all vocalist or people here who are training to be one

    • @thierrypatenaude5680

      Hence the difference between “how to SOUND like” and “how to SCREAM like”! I agree, vocalists should not aim to sound like anybody other than themselves, but other vocalist’s techniques can be used by anyone if they learn it! Adding new techniques to your repertoire is a great way to build a good foundation for your own uniques sound 🤘🤘

    • @thierrypatenaude5680
      @thierrypatenaude5680  3 роки тому +3

      That's definitely a low fry scream, she probably lowers her larynx to get to those lower sounds without losing the fullness in her scream. Honestly it sounds like she is losing distortion there, it might be the mic or the mixing, but I think it's because of the exhaustion (it happens a lot with fry screams to lose a bit of distortion in your scream when you scream for extended periods or without days of rest in between each performance)

    Hi, I got a question - can you explain, how do you compress your screams?

    • @thierrypatenaude5680
      @thierrypatenaude5680  Рік тому +2

      When you scream, you create distortion by making your vocal folds and/or tissues vibrate (the word I’m looking for might not be “tissues” but that’s not the point). Compression is essentially your ability to create those vibrations by using the least amount of air possible, in other words by compressing the air. Use your diaphragm, flex your abs and always keep a good posture. You can work on your compression by taking a straw, and blowing air through it. You should aim for pushing a lot of air and for the longest amount of time. When you’re comfortable with this, you can slowly apply the concept to your screaming techniques! have fun!

    • @thierrypatenaude5680
      @thierrypatenaude5680  3 роки тому +3

      You have to approach this in steps: first of all, you need a good supported tone.. then you have to keep that tone while doing a low scream (which is basically making a "o" shape with your mouth and bringing it as down as you physically can).. When you can do those two previous steps, you can engage the tunnel throat (people achieve the tunnel throat sound by doing different things, I personnally make a bridge with my tongue and place it behind the bottow row of my teeth and I try to create a pocket of air under my tongue.. if that doesn't work for you, there is other ways to do them, I would consider checking out other tutorials covering this subject) When all of that works, you can start playing with the distortion placement and the overtones (I will cover that in other tutorials, but the distortion placement is basically where the distortion is made, for example moving the distortion up in your nose makes it nasal and down in your throat makes it throaty.. The overtones, especially with the usage of tunnels, are amplified with your pronunciation, what I mean by that is that the sound will be different depending on the vowels you decide to use.. You can scream an "i" for a vowel that is usually pronounced as "o" and it would also work) Honestly don't expect getting all of this perfectly in like a month, it is very hard to do simultaneous techniques in a single scream and it takes a lot of practice. It is definitely possible though and I know you can do it!

    • @erikbritz2637
      @erikbritz2637 3 роки тому +1

      @@thierrypatenaude5680 yes man look there is certain moments i get that sound down and i lose it meaning my technique breaks in the middle then also my own sound really is more high pitched fluttering sounding if that makes sense meaning i sometimes keep a note proper sometimes it bounces with the distortion and also i have a sick fucking sound when i curl my tongue up on the roof of my mouth instead of behind the teeth but again not what im working towards but hey i feel i need to go over the basics again then perfect that then move to newer techniques and hammer the repititions and adjustments till i nail my own sound but as close as i can to Cj so far i get the Ben Duerr sound down quite well just with less power cuz of diaphraghm strength so i will practice and see how i develop over a years time.

    • @thierrypatenaude5680

      If you work at it diligently, like you would with any other instrument, for 30 minutes to an hour everyday (not more than 2 hours please). And you practice efficiently, meaning that you have a specific goal in mind when starting the practice session and you don't diverge from it (that means not screaming over songs for the whole practice session, because that would be like trying to play guitar over polyphia songs for 2 hours everyday and wondering why you still can't play like them after a few months). If you frequently record yourself and you analyse what you sound like compared to other screamers. If you keep trying to look for the things that work and can recognize that when something doesn't work there's no point in doing it over and over again (basically if you try to adapt to what your body tells you). Then yes, there is still hope :) Your body has the same instrument as anybody who already knows how to use it, it will never sound exactly the same, but I strongly believe that anyone can learn metal vocal techniques. Don't get frustrated, have fun and keep in mind that the learning curve for screaming is very tricky in the beginning but when you get the base down you'll improve by a lot very quickly :)
