    Male Fry Vocalist Examples
Dan Watson - Enterprise Earth (and he was the original vocalist for Infant Annihilator)
Adam Warren - Oceano (best examples in their older albums)
Jon Mess - Dance Gavin Dance and SECRETBAND
    Spencer Chamberlain - Underoath
Keith Buckley - Every Time I Die
These are also fry vocalists, but they also use their false cords in their mid to low range a lot of the time. Their highs are almost exclusively fry screams though.
Dan Tucker - And Hell Followed With/Crown Magnetar
Trevor Strnad - The Black Dahlia Murder
Jake Luhrs - August Burns Red
David Bruno - Summoning The Lich
Hernan Hermida - All Shall Perish/Suicide Silence
    Devin Duarte - Worm Shepherd
    Diaro Irvine - Plaguebringer
Lukas Magyar - Veil of Maya
    Caleb Shomo - Beartooth
Phil Lebante - All That Remains (Mainly their old stuff when Phil actually screamed)
    Female Fry Vocalists
Lauren Babic - Red Handed Denial
    Janel Duarte - Conquer/Divide
    Vicky Psarakis - The Agonist
Chaney Crabb - Entheos (Sometimes uses FC in her lows)
Alyssa Gluz - The Agonist/Arch Enemy (Sometimes uses her false cords too)
    Rachel Knight - Banshee
    Viky Boyer -Karkaos/Fall of Stasis

Hey man! I tried to learn to scream for 10 years, give or take. After humming lightly and applying pressure at that very moment, I finally could fry scream! I felt vibration in my soft palate, it did not hurt, my voice felt relaxed and just vibrating. Thank you so much!

just remember, it should feel like singing with a tiny bit a tension in the true cords. so when you want to start making it louder, practice belting and then try turning your projected singing voice into a fry scream. Get the vocal cords, vibrating first, and then add the tension, not the other way around.

I have finally found the courage to start learning fry screams, but now when I've actually tried learning it for real I can't believe how hard it actually is.. even though I'm a professional singer. But your tips and tricks have helped me further on the road, and I hope to be able to sound like I wanted for so long. Keep up the good work, we really appreciate your videos!

Thank you! One thing I forgot to mention in this video, is that with fry screaming especially, sometimes progress isn’t very objective. Sometimes progress is you just getting a slightly better understanding of how you’re trying to position your vocal cords and what you’re actually trying to do. Some days you just wake up and practice and you have a slightly better intuition about it. You may not fully understand it today but if you continue to practice it little by little, it will start to feel more natural.

Thanks to this video I am now easily able to get into vocal fry and sometimes get into what I think might be soft fry. I was practicing very quietly since it is 5 am right now but I think I got the feeling of it somewhat. I am really not sure on what the difference between the feel of false chord and "soft fry" is. I feel like there is a lot bit of pressure when I do basic vocal fry and when I go from humming to vocal fry and into what I imagine to be "soft fry", I do not feel the same pressure anymore. But I am really not sure if my vocal chords are open or closed, it feels like I use quite a bit of air so I would imagine they are open. Really not sure tho. If anyone here in the comment section has advice for me, please feel free to educate me.

I've learned so much from you and similar channels like Extreme Vocal Institute and Sibila Extreme Vocal...but I'm seeing all over the internet that fry screaming has absolutely nothing to do with vocal fry, and apparently everyone who says so (including Melissa Cross) is wrong and teaching a supposedly useless technique. What do you think of this conflict of theories? I'm just afraid of damaging my voice. I'd like to think I'm decent at creating the "breezeways" you mentioned, but since I'm low income due to disability I can't get a vocal coach due to cost. My vocal journey has been dependent on amazing people like you. Thank you for all the effort you have put in to teach us 🤘

Feel free to send me a recording and I can give you some feedback. Screamtheoryvocalcoaching@gmail.com. I can tell you that when I perform fry screaming, Im always trying to make it happen with the least amount of tension possible. Even I still have off days where I cant find the perfect balance and end up tensing up too much so my true cords aren't able to vibrate while simultaneously producing the distortion. This happens mostly when I try to project my lows. But do not worry too much about damaging your voice. Just pay close attention to how your true cords feel each time you practice. As long as you arent experiencing pain, then you are probably not going to accidentally cause permanent damage to the true cords. You might overuse your true cords and that will always heal with a few days of rest, hydration, and exercise. But the most serious vocal injuries happen when purposefully push past vocal fatigue or pain when they clearly know they have reached their limit. So just closely monitor yourself and get good sleep each night. Acute trauma will cause pain, which is an obvious sign to stop. Chronic/overuse injuries occur with too frequent practice and not enough rest, so their is a gradual decline in performance/function. This applies to all bodily tissues. I suggest watching this video to help you better understand how injuries occur and how to prevent them. ua-cam.com/video/H1rp_v4Dr3g/v-deo.html

Sounds very much like mid ranged fry screaming to me. you can definitely tell when she accentuates certain syllables while screaming words quickly, by slightly raising the pitch. when she does that, you can definitely hear a hint of that screechy effect. also check out the band Conquer/Divide. Their vocalist fry screams in a very similar way.

If you have been singing for a long time then you will probably have a much easier time learning fry screaming compared to a complete beginner with vocals. But I also recommend everyone learn to use their false cords too. learning to make your false cords vibrate is easier to figure out, but takes many months of practice before it even sounds decent lol.

Hi mate! Great video! I think one of my major concerns about fry screaming is the volume. I still don't really know that how loud should I sound when I want to create a proper fry scream. Some people say that it's not that loud, some say that it's a loud sound, so it's hard to figure out what is the volume that I should aim for. What is you take on this? Do you have any proper examples? Best way to figure this out would be to hear a person fry scream next to you without any mics or music. So can you fly to Finland to scream for me? I'll buy you a pizza. 😄 P.S. my dream is like to scream like in song Imminence - Lighthouse. Some of your thoughts about that specific song would be awesome too.

    • @Scream-Theory
      @Scream-Theory  4 місяці тому +1

Thank you! So in that song the vocalist is definitely fry screaming. As for loudness, I would say that it can definitely vary depending on the style you are going for. You can produce the fry distortion at a very low volume, which is a great exercise for safely getting a grasp of the technique. But when projecting fry screams, it should feel extremely similar to belting or singing with power. For the style that the vocalist of Imminence uses, I would bet that his fry screams are about as loud as his singing voice. I have a video titled "fry screaming exercises to make learning easier" where I give some exercises that will help with learning to project it and make it sound more powerful. I think this will be helpful for you. Hope that helps.

I can actually do it at my low notes! But as soon as I get to mid/high I pretty much pop out of my vocal fry 😂 I guess it's mostly a matter of "feeling" how to
apply the fry to my mid and high ranges?

    • @Scream-Theory
      @Scream-Theory  3 місяці тому

Yes exactly. The biggest mistake 90% of people do is trying squeeze and clench too much in order to produce the effect. I would wager that is what is making it difficult for you to get your higher range. Try some of the exercises in this video though. ua-cam.com/video/Ry4Fav-xM40/v-deo.htmlsi=QPZLPuPjZzQH9eoC

yep thats what I mean about motor control. This happens with learning any complex motor skill. Think of a novice piano player either overshooting or undershooting a key. Or a ping pong player hitting the ball to hard or soft. Its an all or nothing reaction. We need the ability to make the muscle contract with precision. I suggest practicing by singing softly, and trying to hit different notes with a soft/relaxed voice. This will train you to modify the length and tension of the true cords more precisely as you attempt to hit different notes. This will carry over into helping you generate the right amount of tension needed to fry scream. Remember that with fry screaming, we still want the true cords to vibrate, but we need a tiny bit of tension to make vocal fry happen. vibrations + fry creates the distortion. Too much tension = too much fry and the vocal cords cant vibrate. Not enough tension = too little fry and no distortion which is basically just singing.

Try to find fry screaming vocalists to practice to. Try to mimic the sounds you hear to the best of your ability. A good place to start is spencer chamberlin of underoath. Especially their older albums because it will be easier to hear him transition into fry from the projected yell. Another good example is Jon Mess of Secret Band and Dance Gavin Dance. More challenging bands to practice too are Bonecarver, Until We Die, Enterprise Earth, and Oceano. You will find many vocalists who use more false cords for their lows, and fry in their highs, but these bands have good examples of fry screams at all pitch ranges. Also continue to practice singing exercises/voice projection. It also helps to practice that high pitched whiney sound that you hear from a lot of classic rock/metal vocalists.
