- Swapped the inline six for a v8 on the 1965 mustang. Watch and subscribe. Replaced motor mounts, frame mounts, sway bar, and pedal assembly. 289, 30 over, rebuilt c4, stall, cam, front sump pan. Fires up on first start
How much does this cost???? I want to do this with my 65
All depends on the hat you want. High end could be over 10k. Or you can do it for about $2500. The engine and transmission will be the largest expenses. I paid about $800 for the motor, 1k for the transmission, and about $500 in accessory parts.
Nice video and beautiful build! Doing this exact swap.
Good stuff! And good luck 👍🏼
howd it go?
Beautiful job, do you need make any adjustments to the engine harness or did everything match up well
Thanks 🙏 no adjustments needed for any of the wiring. I was already running a HEI and single wire alternator so it was pretty easy. Thanks for watching
The C4 stock six cyl trans isn't up to the job for that engine, so I have heard. Fewer plates?
Good video man . Getting ready to do same swap . Thank you
Thank you 🙏
Did you guys have to change the rearend? Since it came with the inline six? I’m doing the exact same thing. But I’m thinking I have to change the rearend.
Thanks in advance.
Good question. Yes, change your rear end. I went with an 8 inch from a mustang. Also sets you up for a 5 lug and disc brake conversion if you decide to go that route
Nice build! I’m doing this exact swap. Would you mind listing a link to the engine mounts and radiator you bought?

Damn that sixer setup looked so nice, should’ve kept it! Everyone swaps them out; I think it’s cooler to hot rod the six. My plan is to one day have a tri carb setup on my 200
I agree ☝️. That’s exactly why I did it. Won every car show I put it in. Beat out high dollar mustangs. Unfortunately, it was very finicky and needed to be constantly worked on. Tuning and things. So it was time for a change. But I won’t look like every other mustang soon I’m going to do a wide body.
@@garagebuiltlegends Hey bud, I was wondering if you still had the head/carb/linkage setup from your six? I'm committed to keeping mine a sixer and I'd totally buy that off you if still possible
Sorry my man. Sold it already. But if you keep her as a six, you should totally do it
Awesome build, brother .. Just bought a 65 coup with the 200IL6, 3 speed manual .. Havent decided on keeping it 6 and doing a triple carb setup or upgrading to a 302 yet .. Getting 4 wheel power boost disk breaks installed right now though. What size rim and tires do you run and do you uses spacers to run them?
Good stuff. I did a disc brake conversion to a 5 lug. I had 4 lug disc when I had a 6. I ran a tri power setup on a six but it’s a tricky setup if you have the patience. No spacers and I run 17’s now
@@garagebuiltlegends How much did you have to modify your wheel wells?
No modifications needed to the wheel wells, other than rolling the front fenders. Still a bit of rub, I’m running 225 up front. I may do a wide body to get even bigger tires 🛞
@@garagebuiltlegends Im looking at 225 in the front and 245 in the rear right now, but still waiting on the disk brakes to come in and get installed (probably this next week) to get proper measurements so Ill know what exactly I can run.. Going to do the widebody on it in the future though
@@chriscomer1472 good luck 👍🏼
did you have 4 or 5 lug weels? drum or disc brakes?
Did you change the upper and lower control arms and added v8 spindles?
I had 4 lugs. Did not change the upper or lower control arms. Just the sway bar and front springs.
I hate how they give some much misinformation on the mustang forums. Like they say you need all the suspension and spindle upgrades becuse of weight... there's only a 50lb difference between the straight 6 and the 289 engine. Pretty sure the suspension is under more stress with a care full of 4 ppl. 800lbs in it
Hi. How much $ would u b lookin at for labour and parts? I am looking at buying a restored 49 Chev 1 ton. It has the small 6 in it now. I have a rebuilt 289 and a 5 speed available to swap.
Hey Martin, thanks for the comment. where are you located? Send me your email and we can talk. Don’t forget to subscribe 👍🏼
That 67 rear housing, if you used it, and the 3:00 rear chunk, would have been, about 2"s wider, than the stock 65 rear axle housing, flange to flange. This would change the backspacing needed get a good wheel fitment. So keep that mind, when swapping rears between the early 65-66 cars, and the later, wider 67 and up cars..
Noted, that was intentional. I swapped to 3:55’s and are planning on a wide body conversion. The extra 2” push me out to a good fitment/stance.
Just did a 6 cylinder swap to a 302 on my 66 but now problems with my car is cranking after its turned off.
That sucks dude. Check your starter/solenoid, if that doesn’t work take a look at your ignition switch. Hope this helps
Really the passenger side throttle to shorter driverside one? The small c4 auto tranny to the big bell housing, check in the inter gear to see if only 2 clutch plates are used with thick metal rings for stall clutch or!? 5 with thin ones to Thackeray the horsepower ? FOR HYPO V8!!!! What exhaust is the 351 wn. Open it up the bust engin to us is the 289!!! It’s tighter than the 302????. U bet!!!!
Nice video men, do you still have the 6l available, willing to sell it
Thanks for the comment. I wish….but I sold it. It was truly one of one right.
I haven't heard bad moon rising I forever
Good Shit!!
Thanks my man 🙏
rear end?
Rear ended is 3.00 out of a 67 mustang. Looking to install a limited slip soon
@@garagebuiltlegends whats the benefit of having a limited slip?
Fords version of a posi rear end. Get both tires spinning
What tranny? C4?
Yes. C4 👍🏼
I’m doing a 289 swap, would I be able to use the same c4 bell housing from my inline 6 ?
Good question. You will not be able to use the same Bell housing from the inline. It is too small for the 289. Hope this helps and good luck 👍🏼
My kind of people diffently my kind of car cool
Thanks!
