    I love how Deepa unknowingly predicted the ending right at the very start ("I'd just run right off the fucking building")

    This is one of my least favourite episodes, mainly for the fact that it just doesn't make sense. I wish I could bring myself to get emotional but when the exit shouldn't even be an exit (the Doctor can easily go and get them), I just can't. However, that rooftop scene is beautiful.

    • @nocturne8333

      I think the Doctor can’t save Amy and Rory because they’d damaged time so much by creating the paradox. If he ever tries to get to them then he could rip time apart. Additionally, because he sees the gravestone and reads the afterword, Amy and Rory’s lives become a fixed timeline and he knows that they never see him again. I found a quote from Moffat that pretty succinctly explains it.
      ‘In normal circumstances he might have gone back and said, ‘look we’ll just put a headstone up and we’ll just write the book’. But there is so much scar tissue, and the number of paradoxes that have already been inflicted on that nexus of timelines, that it will rip apart if you try to do one more thing. He has to leave it alone. Normally he could perform some surgery, this time too much surgery has already been performed.’

      @@nocturne8333 "they’d damaged time so much by creating the paradox. If he ever tries to get to them then he could rip time apart."
      Why though? It wouldn't be a paradox. No more than the Doctor and Martha being rescued by Sally and Larry/themselves in 'Blink'. The Weeping Angels send people back in time. There's nothing stopping someone from going back in time and collecting said person.
      Also, the whole idea of "one more paradox" as if there's a threshold doesn't really make sense as any number of paradoxes are as bad as just one, but this is science fantasy so I'll let that go.
      "Additionally, because he sees the gravestone and reads the afterword, Amy and Rory’s lives become a fixed timeline"
      Again, why though? There's no logic to that. All that's fixed is that there is a gravestone with those names. There is nothing stopping the Doctor from just faking a gravestone. And the same applies to the afterword (not that this situation should even have developed to the point of reading the afterword as the solution of going and getting Amy and Rory is blatantly obvious). Moffat is acknowledging the solution in that quote but seems to think that it would be creating another paradox when that just isn't the case. It would be saving them in a way that avoids a paradox. The only reason a paradox would occur is if you saved them and didn't replace the gravestone (/afterword).

    It is a bit of a meta thing too, much like how the weeping angels don't move when the viewer is looking at them but none of the characters are. The audience knew beforehand that this was Amy and Rory's last episode, and we are shown Rory's gravestone right as Amy and the Doctor leave for the past. We saw the writing too, and now Rory's death is set.

    One of my favourite bits of amys story is the way its formatted. "Amelia Pond. It like a name out of a fairytale" and "this is the story of Amelia Pond, and this is how it ends" ita just a really nice tie in to her first episode that closes off her story. I love it

    So here is a story for ya - This is the first episode of Doctor Who I ever watched live, and it aired on TV right before I left for the annual winter/Christmas pageant at my secondary school (which we had well before Winter Break). It was also one of very select few pieces of media that actually had made me cry, so the impressiveness of a then 14 year old watching this, bawling my eyes out hysterically and then putting that to a full stop and going to perform in a school show immediately after... Impressive acting on my part 😂😂😂
    But yes, this was the first episode of Doctor Who I ever watched live, after spending about three months prior binge watching all of Matt Smith's era to that point, and a few select episodes of Tennant (I didn't watch the show in order before then. I have seen it all now but my brother started me on Smith so that was the majority of what I had seen. Which actually kinda made this episode even more traumatic, cause Amy and Rory had literally been my only true companions up to that point, hahaha)

    When I first saw this episode back when it aired, I only managed to read the chapter title "Death at Winter Quay", and not the one that says "Amelia's last farewell". I had also specifically stayed away from DW news and rumors because someone leaked that River is Amy's daughter before season 6 began airing, and I didn't know this would be Amy and Rory's last episode.

    Amy and Rory's departure makes no sense still to this day.
    Why couldn't they just leave New York and go somewhere else in 1938 where the Doctor can travel?
    Why couldn't the Doctor find them in 1939 New York? Or 1940?
    They're not permanently trapped in 1938 New York, they die in the 80s!
    Ughh...

    • @nocturne8333
      @nocturne8333 2 роки тому +3

      I believe Moffat explained that because they had already created a paradox, Amy and Roy’s timeline became so damaged that when they get sent back it becomes too risky for the Doctor to visit them without destroying New York. Also, he reads the names on the grave, and Amy’s letter reveals they lived their whole lives in New York, making it a fixed future the Doctor can’t change. It’s never explained outright but it’s heavily implied in the episode.

    • @shoogamoogaman
      @shoogamoogaman 2 роки тому

      @@nocturne8333 The Doctor can still visit New York in any other year. 1938 is a no go but he could visit them in 1939 or onwards.
      And I find it very hard to believe that Amy and Rory, two people addicted to travelling, never left New York after being sent back in time.
      It's the most convoluted departure of the whole show.

    • @nocturne8333
      @nocturne8333 2 роки тому +3

      @@shoogamoogaman I think the problem is more that he can’t see Amy and Rory rather than being unable to go to New York. He knows that Amy and Rory live and die in New York because he’s read what’s happened to them. He also knows that if he goes to see them and takes them, away then it creates a paradox. Also, by the time he tries to fix the temporal disruption in The Return of Doctor Mysterio, he’s accepted that the Ponds lived happy and full lives and so he doesn’t need to go back.
      At the very least it’s very well written from an emotional stand point, Moffat knows how to do this significantly more effectively than other writers (compared to the RTD melodrama over Rose and subsequently ruining her exit).

    Do not want to be that guy, but... the Statue of Liberty is not made of stone. So, is this episode telling us that the Angels can be made of any material as long as it is a statue, or did none of the writers and no one on the entire production staff and no one at the BBC know that the Statue of Liberty is not stone?

      I believe the in universe explanation is that weeping angels can infect normal statues and turn them into angels, hence the design of the angels that attack Julius Grayle. I think it’s mentioned in Doom Coalition as well, though it could be Fallen Angels (It was definitely Big Finish).
