When mounting heavy things to a wall first screw a horizontal 2x4 to the bottom of the wall and *rest* the large heavy thing on the 2x4. Makes it infinitely easier to screw it permanently into the wall. You can remove the 2x4 later or leave it in for extra strength.

a pair of french cleats would have definitely been the way to go. Could have caught as many of those studs as you wanted to for the weight. Agree with tweaking the brackets to allow for a 45° rotation out for maintenance purposes

Also the reason the products are so good and nobody competes is they are a patent hog and dispute google and other companies being able to have similar features.
Falling water is their power so it's pretty inexpensive, and he has solar on top of that so honestly could be pretty close to zero, or on a good month the city could potentially pay them for any excess energy that goes back to the grid.
I know no one's gonna read this, but fudge me, at 9:00 when Linus bugs out and takes like 5 seconds to load, literally had me rolling. Rolling because I had to watch it like ten times. I placed myself comfortably into his situation, with ease, because as a man, I think We've all been there. So much stuff going on that you get distracted enough to zone out to who-knows-where and hope that someone can pick up the buffer and snap you back into this dimension that at that moment, we didn't belong. Y'all editors are some of the best I've seen on UA-cam, I love the content, I love the laughs, I love the technical knowledge about stuff I will never be able to afford or be bothered to install if I could even afford! 7:35 the one red and one orange bracket can be useful to indicate/mark an amp that is most important so you can identify immediately.. i.e. the amp that controls the main entertainment area of your house, or whichever will get the most use. So that if something ever goes wrong and you need to check connections, check the amp, or whatever.. you don't have to consult a wiring diagram or search for labels to know which set of wires and amp controls the room that gets used the most.
You guys should have done a 45 degree angled mount for the amps so the back end on each amp was exposed for ease of access and arrange them like in a roof shingle pattern. That would have looked sick AF!
For the next time you hang plywood sheets on the wall, french cleats may be an easier option. It means you can get into studs without worrying about where the items on the plywood are. It's much easier to work around items that way.
I used to install multi-home audio for 10 years. Predating Sonos and the new wireless systems. This is different, usually we did it with multi-channel amplifiers and switchers. All controlled through a touchscreen with a managed system. Sonos works great though, we did a couple of those, however, switchers and rack-mounted amps may have been the way to go? Of course, smart systems to manage something like this are their own monster. I can see why you wouldn't want it either.
For what he wants Multi-Zone amps combined with something like a SoundWeb blue would have been a far, far better choice. He’s already said he just wants audio, and for the areas where he needs atmos etc, that’s easily achieved as well with a little forward thinking and planning. Hell, his team are technically minded enough to do the installation themselves tbh, it’s genuinely not hard.
So I'm here watching this and have a wired 5 zone system. I use the Speaker B on my Denon 7.1 amp and run that to a 5 zone switch. Audio is then fed to my dumb amp using a Google Chromecast Audio (RIP). Is there any point to updating to something like this? The only advantage I am seeing is not having to go back to the media cabinet to switch speaker zones.

He also missed, that the Gen1 Sonos Connect Amps are already „legacy“ and not supported by the current version of the Sonos App (and do not support Airplay 2 as a „get-out-of-jail-card“) It is expected, that those boxes will lose support in the next 2 years and then any streaming service that breaks, won‘t be fixed. So yes, it is cheaper than buying the current generation, but 2 years of support vs 10+ for the Gen2 sounds like a really bad deal.
A tip in the future for a larger piece like that is to mount a 1x4 to length to the studs beforehand when they are easy to find, then when you go to attach your finished piece you know anywhere in that 4 inches it is already secure to studs. You guys did good but their are situations where hoping you got the stud right and missing is an issue for more reasons then one

I fully support any unnecessary sound upgrade, and i love that Linus has taken it upon himself to build the tech home of his dreams out of his business and get paid while doing it. Its pretty baller.
@@3nertia Are you being intentionally dense? It's not that hard to patch up a few holes, but the fewer the better obviously. What alternative do you even have if you want to hang something on the wall?
At that quantity, I would absolutely recommend plugging in all of those connect:amps, directly to a managed switch, minimizing daisy chained devices, and setting up RSTP with Sonos's recommended settings. Furthermore, you really NEED to turn off the internal wi-fi antennas if you're hardwiring the units due to network looping issues. Sonos runs STP natively and will try its best to take care of these loops, but you really want to install and configure it for success from the beginning. The less work it has to do, is better. Hardwired, minimal daisy chaining, wifi turned OFF internally, connected to L2 switches with RSTP configured correctly, "edge port" set to no, and you'll be happy with the performance! I've been installing Sonos and related networks for a few years now.. the network has the ability to make or break the system. I'm happy to advise if you run into issues.
They've been running this way for many months. All we did in this video is cable manage it. Thanks tho I'll look into this if I ever run into problems -LS

Would love to see an open source or RPI / bananapi version of this project. Of course each speaker still needs a driver but managing each and opening them up to wifi securely in labeled zones really can't be that expensive. I feel like with a little elbow grease this could be done for one tenth of the price.
Its crazy how cheap a decent amp is these days, I have a Fosi Audio ZK-TB21 running off my PC and was stunned how it sounds compared to how poor cheap amps used to be. The only catch is I wish I could disable Bluetooth as it cuts out audio every time I boot my Windows PC (not the one its connected to) when Bluetooth starts up (presumably scanning for devices).
One of the things in life that makes me feel frustratingly powerless: Both major mobile phone OSes have their own, bespoke, proprietary wireless network-based streaming protocols -- and their own bespoke, proprietary crap audio devices to use them. So, a completely open, standards-based wireless network audio streaming protocol is basically never going to happen. It would allow anyone on any platform to stream to any device of their choosing. Phone to speaker, computer to HiFi, even potentially TV to phone to audiophile headphones (if they still had headphone jacks, anyway.) But nope. Bluetooth and Google Cast or AirPlay. That's it. Anything else will only ever work in its own app.
The camera move in his living room at starting at the 1:35 mark is really good because it is still has the rawness expected with LTT but shows everything we need to see with what he is talking about. It is intentional and authentic. It has a different feel than some of the snappier, quicker stuff that LTT was doing. I'm not sure if this is the result of some process changes, but if it is...good work.

@@wreagfe ltt had a period of repeat issues of data inaccuracy in videos, due to poor prioritization of content velocity over quality. they also had some number of employees (at least 1) experiencing harassment at work of various kinds, due to seemingly insufficient protections against workplace harassment problems. the company got called out by another youtuber for the quality issues, and finally took a step back from everything to take it all seriously. during this time, an internet dogpile happened for a while, and some of your usual dogpile psychos tried to doxx ltt employees and send them death threats. so yeah, backlash. valid problems they needed to fix, reasonable calls for accountability from the community, and also an excess of community and non-community dogpiling, doomerism, and harassment.

For mounting boards of stuff like that. You should consider using a French Cleat. It is how kitchen cabinets are hung and it makes setting up wall mount boards so much easier. You build the board like you have out of place. Install the French cleat on the back of the board and on the wall. Then you just hang the entire board. No need to think about studs. When you decommission the board it is a snap to replace it.

As a former sonos tech support agent… this setup isn’t gonna last as long as he’d like, when i still worked there we’d get more and more calls about customers’ connect amps kicking the bucket, and knowing how Sonos operates, the C:A (as it’s referred to by the techs) will lost support sooner rather than later. Also his setup would terrify any support agent to take his call 😂
It terrifies me, just to see the insane amount of cables. I think I'm sticking with my 6 Bluetooth speakers distributed through home and pairing them with old mobiles solution.
Sonos is one of the worst trash products I've ever dealt with. I had like 12 Play units in my house. Six Play:1, four Play:3, and a couple Play:5 units. They are not very easy. Garbage app, can't stream directly to them, changes in app (instead of keeping the same app and updating it), no inputs, no Alexa on the speaker. Just junk. You'd have to have an Alexa speaker next to your Sonos speaker. Promptly got rid of that junk. Good thing was, I had a few Christmas gifts for the next 2 years. I gave out 2-3 kits to people, with different amounts of speakers. And since they were new, I was able to get them back into the boxes with all the plastic wrapping and stuff intact.
@@atticusrussell1225 most likely end of support type issues, or frankly more likely, network issues, the moment he changes a part of his network there’s a fair chance it’ll all go haywire, and then when he eventually calls in for support they’ll have him simplify his network to troubleshoot, and he won’t have it 😂
The "Sonos are very good at supporting their old devices" line made me bristle. They literally sendt out a FW update MADE to brick 100% functional devices on PURPOSE! This was just 2-3 years ago. After getting 5 of my speakers bricked, I swore I wouldnt touch a Sonos device ever again. Go for Yamaha multi zone, or almost ANY multi zone recievers/systems instead!
FYI - have had quite a few Sonos Gen 2 AMPs - you may want to look at mounting some fans around the area (not sure what your basement temps at, they might be ok), but they like to get heat death.
I would have used the 2x4s to add a space behind the false wall to run wires in and then those power outlets could go into cutouts. ONe of these could be a french cleat allowing for easy placing on the wall, but I really like it either way.
Came here to say the mount should have been a French cleat. I'm about to do a very similar plywood panel to make a tool wall, and I'll be using a French cleat with mine.

I had housewide speaker system in one of my homes back in the early 2000's, i think my dad used it maybe 3 times a year but it was such a cool little feature of the house, could have music playing outside and in the kitchen while a movie played on the main speakers on the tv and also in the hallways and rooms so you don't miss anything during the movie

Cables don't just break, unless you drill into one. But that's a problem that can be avoided if installation is done to standards, that he does not meet.

Hell no. Not in a space where you might end up having contractors who don't know that bumping this upwards will end up with 40kg crashing down on them. Also, why? He said it's pretty permanent. That's the wrong solution for that.
French cleats would have been a great solution. You shoot a couple screws through the cleats and you don’t have to worry about them getting dislodged. It makes mounting things like this dead simple.
@@ANDSENS Why? Ease of installation, ease of leveling, ease of relocating. One of the most common uses of them is on cabinets, which are certainly more permanent than this. As far as risk of knocking down, a single screw driven into the lower alignment/leverage bar eliminates this possibility. I respect your opinion, but I thoroughly disagree.
@@MacroAggressora French cleat wouldn't have made the installation significantly easier. They just had to hold it up for 20 seconds until two screws where in. Not a big deal. Why would you want to level this?
A little worried about having those power sockets facing upwards in a room that also has water flow coming in through the ceiling. At the very least, get some plug covers to put into the open sockets to try to avoid a small disaster turning into a large one; or more ideally, mount the power strips with the sockets facing downward instead.
I think if he has water intrusion into THAT room anywhere but the intended place, he's got much bigger problems than blowing a fuse and potentially killing a couple thousand dollars worth of audio equipment. I'd be much more concerned with all the stuff in that rack ^^
We use 3/4" backer boards in our MDF. To make them easier to hang, screw a temporary, level, ledger board horizontal along the bottom to hold the weight while you secure your install to the wall. If you are building a server/mechanical/MDF, put 3/4" plywood behind the drywall during construction. Then you can install anything, just about anywhere, without worrying about whether or not it is secure.
The Connect Amp 2nd Gen is a Class-D amp and doesn't use a lot of power when not actively amplifying audio, so while standby current is >0, it's not a lot.

@@Kr0noZ For a hotel or commercial space In the UK I'd spec a cloud system, 2 - 8 Zone mixers (Z8MK4) 1 - 4 Zone mixer (Z4MK4) 2 - 8 channel DSP amp's (CV8125) 1 - 2 channel DSP amp (CV2500) any number of LM-2 facility plates with Bluetooth needed For home use I would use Qsys, a Core 110f for outputs and processing with a few MP-A80V amplifiers plus a unD6IO-BT at each location an input would be needed all programmed for use with the mobile app this could also handle smart lighting and complete room controls.

For the home cinema, I'd really recommend KEF KF92 subs. They're much smaller than what you have now, easier to place, and better performance. Plus sealed.
Linus, just get a saw stop saw, it will detect even the slightest contact to your hand and immediately stop and retract the saw, watch some videos it's REALLY FAST and cool.
I’ve spent years thinking about how great a hole home audio system could be, but honestly they only ever end up making a house feel like a Starbucks or Target. If you REALLY want to have music everywhere get headphones and if you want music in your room, buy a stereo amp or receiver in every location and hook multi room stuff to it using old computers and phones!
@@Nevir202 the sound is streamed directly from the audio provider (eg. Spotify, Apple Music etc.) to the Sonos device. Your phone/PC is only in control of the playlist and volume, but doesn't process the audio signal whatsoever.
@Nevir202 I'm sure you could stream from spotify direct from your phone in mono, but then you have to swap between mono and stereo whenever you're playing music on headphones, sonos, car, etc.. do you own any sonos products?
I love the house upgrade content from you guys, this was exceptional. One comment, your audio levels throughout the video are all over the place. like the intro was one, the sponsor was quiet, then it was loud, and then the outro was quiet again. Not usually something I see in an LTT video.
For a professional installation I would recommend a 70 volt audio system. It's designed for long runs. You don't need super thick speaker cable, and every speaker in a zone can be daisy-chained so only 1 home run is needed per zone.
A PoE speaker setup using AVB/TSN or Dante would have vastly simplified this setup. This does limit speaker output power if there is a need for more than ~70W. There are also PoE amplifiers that let you use your own speakers and plenum rated to be installed into ceiling spaces near the speakers themselves. This vastly simplifies wiring as only CAT cables are what is ran to the rack regardless of using a PoE speaker or amp plus a short speaker jumper if using the PoE amp solution. PoE speakers/amplifiers with built-in DSP processors to handle things like specific EQ for the speaker and its positioning in a room are also options. Depending on the model, you can also get a pass through port on them to connect another device. Pass through ports are nice for reusing a network run to a device that isn't latency sensitive like a projector for control data. Newer generation of these devices are also integrating various sensors like temperature, humidity and ambient light which are useful for tying into an automation system. Daisy chaining as seen in this video is not optimal for audio transmission due to the additive latency. There is at least 6 network hops involved for the last unit to get its audio data (to the wi-fi access point -> core switch -> switch dedicated to the amp cluster -> three more hops through other Sonos amps). For something like playing music in a room of off a phone, this isn't noticeable as there no reference to determine how the skew in time. However with the audio source being say a movie or a console game, there is an end user expectation of when audio should be heard. This is similar in concept to how video scalers can introduce a few frames of latency in a video feed which can become noticeable for gaming. If there are enough ports on the main switch, I'd have direct wired them all into that or provisioned a larger switch for just the amplifiers to cut down on the daisy chain hops. While audio is latency sensitive, the bandwidth requirements are not that great.
I think the better solution is single board computers or arduino/teeny. If you were gonna buy that many standalone clients, but wire the audio across instead of ethernet (why?), then you should use a better server and a mixer or pcie cards.
A thought - use the 2x4 to stand the plywood 3.5” off the wall, with a dead space behind that can accommodate all the cords. On the corner side, hinge the plywood with a heavy duty gate hinge. Easy access behind. Use the solid works model to determine where to cut slots for the cords to run through right by the equipment. All the speaker cables can be routed from the hinge side with 3-4” of slack to allow the panel to open up. I did a similar thing for a 55” tv mount that I needed to go 360 degrees to allow viewing from a different area :)
13:16 mounting to the wall is super easy, one person, if you first put a 2x4 at the bottom point you'd like to mount, mounted into the studs, then put the panel on top of the now horizontal 2x4, and mount the panel.

His house is quite noobishly done. There are many better ways in creating a better smart home using KNX and a Schneider Electric SpaceLYnk using scripting. So much lost potential.
I really like watching these videos, but betting on SONOS for a setup like this is risky. Calling it "furniture" is completely ignoring that they went out of their way to brick older units, and ended up barely supporting older units in a legacy app (can't combine new and old). They have shown that they don't particularly like to support their products for long, so chances are the App will stop supporting these units in the future. Maybe I'm just being cynical. I invested quite some money in Sonos to begin but I will never will buy anything Sonos again. I like my speakers and audio system to have lifespan counted as decades, not years.
@@LinusTechTips Buying 2nd hand even if you can afford brand new helps mitigate loss if Sonos do anything stupid and with a team of tech professionals on hand I'm sure you could find a workaround if Sonos drop support. I set up my audio with 2nd hand Denon amps and avoided wifi using older equipment but I won't be tempted to upgrade at some point although I do like your set-up. Good job.

Anyway, with this setup it's fairly easy to replace the central control part of it, if needed. So all in all a nice solution. Love these house update videos btw 😀
If anyone is interested in a multi speaker setup, you might want to look into a 70v commercial setup. Wiring is so much easier, you run wires from speaker to speaker. You set the amount of watts each speakers pull and as long as they all add up to less what your amp can run everything should work ok. I picked up a used system off marketplace and am running 8 speakers throughout the house, 4 in the garage and 6 outside.
This is something that I would love to see Linus address now as this is the perfect illustration of a MAJOR investment in a technology that was simply abandoned by the make a few months later. What now? What are the consumers options? What has Linus done? But this video needs to be updated post the SONOS change in hardware and service.
Ive been a low voltage tech for oing on 20 years and every phase of what you've been doing yourself is part of my job. And when it comes to the home audio part Ive always said TO NON-CUSTOMERS that I would go to best buy and grab a 3.1 or 5.1 sony B.T. surround system for each room that would sound way better and cost a 3rd of the price. Then hang each rooms remote next to the light switch if its a room that would normally get a V\C. And all my friends which are also in construction in 1 way or another would be impressed. And I wouldn't have to spend all day trying to justify why I spent so much money
I forgot 1 other important fact about my dream. In 1 year when its time for a upgrade I can rebox each system and gift it to someone for X-Mas\BDay and\or if a speaker blows there is no ladder involved which my future self appreciates sense I don't have the same balance Iused too. 😊

I'm planning a whole house audio setup also. Except my plan is to run everything off my server (multiple instances of Mopidy is one possible plan, another is a project called music-assistant) and use a bunch of USB audio cards to run ~300w class-D amplifiers for each zone. Should be less than $20/zone and immune to some company shutting it down. When it's done, you should be able to control it from Home Assistant, ideally from your phone or wall mounted tablets (there's this really cool project somebody did to make a wall mount for Kindle Fires that's magnetic and does wireless charging, so you can pull the tablet off the wall, use it, then put it back to use it on the wall and charge).
Very interesting. What kind of USB audio cards are you looking at? What kind of limits are you going to hit if you have a large amount of zones all running from the same server?
@@remyroyster Basically just USB audio dongles off Amazon. The sort of thing you'd use for an Android phone with only USB C. Some of those have 24 bit, 192kHz DACs in them. Now, if you look at the science of all that, I'm really not sure it buys you anything beyond standard 16 bit, 44kHz, but it has it nevertheless. Biggest problem I anticipate if I run a bunch of zones at once is bandwidth on the USB bus. Alot of these don't do USB audio 2.0 (at least as far as I can tell - documentation can be spotty). That means you actually end up limited to USB 1 speeds, if I understand USB hub topology correctly. So, running a bunch of them at 24 bits, 192kHz might get tricky. At 44kHz, 16bit, a single root controller should be able to handle multiple zones, no problem. That's going to need some experimentation. Another problem might also be the power supply for the zone amplifiers. The plan is that you have a bunch of class D amplifier boards (the sort of thing you can get cheap off eBay or Alliexpress) running off one big 24V power supply. Now, you actually need alot less power to drive speakers to unreasonably loud levels than you might think, but if a bunch of zones all hit at the same time, it could dip the rail, so I'll have to look out for that. I don't think CPU and RAM performance will be too much of a problem. But things might look different if I'm running 10 zones at once, especially if it's 10 zones playing different things. Have to see about that one. This whole thing is actually inspired by what a Debian developer named Bdale Garbee did after his house burned in a forest fire. Lookup an article on LWN called "Whole-house audio with free hardware and software". So, there is some existence proof something like this should be able to work.
@@ccoder4953 What about a bunch of Raspberry Pi, one for each room/passive speaker with a DigiAMP+ hat? The case+hat+power supply would cost around $60 USD + the actual raspberry pi (cost can very depending on various models/providers). That hat can drive 2x35 Watts channel which seems enough for most *good enough* celling/wall passive speaker.
Just a simple question: why not go for the Bluesound rackmount option? You have 4 zones per 2U-unit. It also sounds a LOT better than Sonos and has more convenient features. And concerning support: even the 1st gen Bluesound (10 years old now) supports 24 bit audio (REAL 24 bit in stead of downsampled to 16 bit) ánd it works in the same app still...
Sonos has a LOT easier to use system, you can also fit 4 homes on a 2u unit if you use the new sonos amps. I understand why Linus used the old ones, but the new amps make more sense to use in 99% of use cases

When mounting heavy things to a wall first screw a horizontal 2x4 to the bottom of the wall and *rest* the large heavy thing on the 2x4. Makes it infinitely easier to screw it permanently into the wall. You can remove the 2x4 later or leave it in for extra strength.

they have an unfinished vapour barrier in their basement with moisture showing already on the concrete in one of the most humid places in canada, dont worry all will be fine lol.

Yeah we pay around 10c CAD per kWh in BC, about 7c USD. Pretty cheap generally.
Falling water is their power so it's pretty inexpensive, and he has solar on top of that so honestly could be pretty close to zero, or on a good month the city could potentially pay them for any excess energy that goes back to the grid.

7:35 the one red and one orange bracket can be useful to indicate/mark an amp that is most important so you can identify immediately.. i.e. the amp that controls the main entertainment area of your house, or whichever will get the most use. So that if something ever goes wrong and you need to check connections, check the amp, or whatever.. you don't have to consult a wiring diagram or search for labels to know which set of wires and amp controls the room that gets used the most.
He should have used that for the office, so Yvonne knows which cables to pull when she wants to work in peace xD

For the next time you hang plywood sheets on the wall, french cleats may be an easier option. It means you can get into studs without worrying about where the items on the plywood are. It's much easier to work around items that way.

I used to install multi-home audio for 10 years. Predating Sonos and the new wireless systems. This is different, usually we did it with multi-channel amplifiers and switchers. All controlled through a touchscreen with a managed system. Sonos works great though, we did a couple of those, however, switchers and rack-mounted amps may have been the way to go? Of course, smart systems to manage something like this are their own monster. I can see why you wouldn't want it either.

For what he wants Multi-Zone amps combined with something like a SoundWeb blue would have been a far, far better choice.
He’s already said he just wants audio, and for the areas where he needs atmos etc, that’s easily achieved as well with a little forward thinking and planning.

So I'm here watching this and have a wired 5 zone system. I use the Speaker B on my Denon 7.1 amp and run that to a 5 zone switch. Audio is then fed to my dumb amp using a Google Chromecast Audio (RIP). Is there any point to updating to something like this? The only advantage I am seeing is not having to go back to the media cabinet to switch speaker zones.

It is expected, that those boxes will lose support in the next 2 years and then any streaming service that breaks, won‘t be fixed.
So yes, it is cheaper than buying the current generation, but 2 years of support vs 10+ for the Gen2 sounds like a really bad deal.
A tip in the future for a larger piece like that is to mount a 1x4 to length to the studs beforehand when they are easy to find, then when you go to attach your finished piece you know anywhere in that 4 inches it is already secure to studs. You guys did good but their are situations where hoping you got the stud right and missing is an issue for more reasons then one

At that quantity, I would absolutely recommend plugging in all of those connect:amps, directly to a managed switch, minimizing daisy chained devices, and setting up RSTP with Sonos's recommended settings. Furthermore, you really NEED to turn off the internal wi-fi antennas if you're hardwiring the units due to network looping issues. Sonos runs STP natively and will try its best to take care of these loops, but you really want to install and configure it for success from the beginning. The less work it has to do, is better.
Hardwired, minimal daisy chaining, wifi turned OFF internally, connected to L2 switches with RSTP configured correctly, "edge port" set to no, and you'll be happy with the performance!
I've been installing Sonos and related networks for a few years now.. the network has the ability to make or break the system.
I'm happy to advise if you run into issues.
I'd assume Jake set up the Ubiquity knowing the basic stuff like stp. Turning the amps' wifi off sounds like a good idea regardless.
They've been running this way for many months. All we did in this video is cable manage it. Thanks tho I'll look into this if I ever run into problems -LS

Would love to see an open source or RPI / bananapi version of this project. Of course each speaker still needs a driver but managing each and opening them up to wifi securely in labeled zones really can't be that expensive. I feel like with a little elbow grease this could be done for one tenth of the price.
Its crazy how cheap a decent amp is these days, I have a Fosi Audio ZK-TB21 running off my PC and was stunned how it sounds compared to how poor cheap amps used to be. The only catch is I wish I could disable Bluetooth as it cuts out audio every time I boot my Windows PC (not the one its connected to) when Bluetooth starts up (presumably scanning for devices).
One of the things in life that makes me feel frustratingly powerless: Both major mobile phone OSes have their own, bespoke, proprietary wireless network-based streaming protocols -- and their own bespoke, proprietary crap audio devices to use them.
So, a completely open, standards-based wireless network audio streaming protocol is basically never going to happen. It would allow anyone on any platform to stream to any device of their choosing. Phone to speaker, computer to HiFi, even potentially TV to phone to audiophile headphones (if they still had headphone jacks, anyway.)
But nope. Bluetooth and Google Cast or AirPlay. That's it. Anything else will only ever work in its own app.

The camera move in his living room at starting at the 1:35 mark is really good because it is still has the rawness expected with LTT but shows everything we need to see with what he is talking about. It is intentional and authentic. It has a different feel than some of the snappier, quicker stuff that LTT was doing. I'm not sure if this is the result of some process changes, but if it is...good work.
It'll be interesting to do an analysis of the energy consumption at Linus' house (and probably cost breakdown) and optimization plans.

For mounting boards of stuff like that. You should consider using a French Cleat. It is how kitchen cabinets are hung and it makes setting up wall mount boards so much easier. You build the board like you have out of place. Install the French cleat on the back of the board and on the wall. Then you just hang the entire board. No need to think about studs. When you decommission the board it is a snap to replace it.

It terrifies me, just to see the insane amount of cables. I think I'm sticking with my 6 Bluetooth speakers distributed through home and pairing them with old mobiles solution.
Sonos is one of the worst trash products I've ever dealt with. I had like 12 Play units in my house. Six Play:1, four Play:3, and a couple Play:5 units. They are not very easy. Garbage app, can't stream directly to them, changes in app (instead of keeping the same app and updating it), no inputs, no Alexa on the speaker. Just junk. You'd have to have an Alexa speaker next to your Sonos speaker. Promptly got rid of that junk. Good thing was, I had a few Christmas gifts for the next 2 years. I gave out 2-3 kits to people, with different amounts of speakers. And since they were new, I was able to get them back into the boxes with all the plastic wrapping and stuff intact.

The "Sonos are very good at supporting their old devices" line made me bristle. They literally sendt out a FW update MADE to brick 100% functional devices on PURPOSE! This was just 2-3 years ago.
After getting 5 of my speakers bricked, I swore I wouldnt touch a Sonos device ever again.
Go for Yamaha multi zone, or almost ANY multi zone recievers/systems instead!

FYI - have had quite a few Sonos Gen 2 AMPs - you may want to look at mounting some fans around the area (not sure what your basement temps at, they might be ok), but they like to get heat death.

I would have used the 2x4s to add a space behind the false wall to run wires in and then those power outlets could go into cutouts. ONe of these could be a french cleat allowing for easy placing on the wall, but I really like it either way.
Came here to say the mount should have been a French cleat. I'm about to do a very similar plywood panel to make a tool wall, and I'll be using a French cleat with mine.

I had housewide speaker system in one of my homes back in the early 2000's, i think my dad used it maybe 3 times a year but it was such a cool little feature of the house, could have music playing outside and in the kitchen while a movie played on the main speakers on the tv and also in the hallways and rooms so you don't miss anything during the movie

This would've been an excellent use case for a french cleat mounting system (especially since you already have a tablesaw to rip the cleats).
Hell no. Not in a space where you might end up having contractors who don't know that bumping this upwards will end up with 40kg crashing down on them. Also, why? He said it's pretty permanent. That's the wrong solution for that.
French cleats would have been a great solution. You shoot a couple screws through the cleats and you don’t have to worry about them getting dislodged. It makes mounting things like this dead simple.
@@ANDSENS Why? Ease of installation, ease of leveling, ease of relocating. One of the most common uses of them is on cabinets, which are certainly more permanent than this. As far as risk of knocking down, a single screw driven into the lower alignment/leverage bar eliminates this possibility. I respect your opinion, but I thoroughly disagree.

They just had to hold it up for 20 seconds until two screws where in. Not a big deal.
Why would you want to level this?
A little worried about having those power sockets facing upwards in a room that also has water flow coming in through the ceiling. At the very least, get some plug covers to put into the open sockets to try to avoid a small disaster turning into a large one; or more ideally, mount the power strips with the sockets facing downward instead.
I think if he has water intrusion into THAT room anywhere but the intended place, he's got much bigger problems than blowing a fuse and potentially killing a couple thousand dollars worth of audio equipment.
I'd be much more concerned with all the stuff in that rack ^^
I'd invert them just to minimize dust collection. But as they are directly below the amps, they'll protect the power strips from damage ;)
We use 3/4" backer boards in our MDF. To make them easier to hang, screw a temporary, level, ledger board horizontal along the bottom to hold the weight while you secure your install to the wall.
If you are building a server/mechanical/MDF, put 3/4" plywood behind the drywall during construction. Then you can install anything, just about anywhere, without worrying about whether or not it is secure.

The Connect Amp 2nd Gen is a Class-D amp and doesn't use a lot of power when not actively amplifying audio, so while standby current is >0, it's not a lot.

I’ve spent years thinking about how great a hole home audio system could be, but honestly they only ever end up making a house feel like a Starbucks or Target. If you REALLY want to have music everywhere get headphones and if you want music in your room, buy a stereo amp or receiver in every location and hook multi room stuff to it using old computers and phones!

@@Nevir202 the sound is streamed directly from the audio provider (eg. Spotify, Apple Music etc.) to the Sonos device. Your phone/PC is only in control of the playlist and volume, but doesn't process the audio signal whatsoever.
@Nevir202 I'm sure you could stream from spotify direct from your phone in mono, but then you have to swap between mono and stereo whenever you're playing music on headphones, sonos, car, etc.. do you own any sonos products?

For a professional installation I would recommend a 70 volt audio system. It's designed for long runs. You don't need super thick speaker cable, and every speaker in a zone can be daisy-chained so only 1 home run is needed per zone.

A PoE speaker setup using AVB/TSN or Dante would have vastly simplified this setup. This does limit speaker output power if there is a need for more than ~70W. There are also PoE amplifiers that let you use your own speakers and plenum rated to be installed into ceiling spaces near the speakers themselves. This vastly simplifies wiring as only CAT cables are what is ran to the rack regardless of using a PoE speaker or amp plus a short speaker jumper if using the PoE amp solution. PoE speakers/amplifiers with built-in DSP processors to handle things like specific EQ for the speaker and its positioning in a room are also options. Depending on the model, you can also get a pass through port on them to connect another device. Pass through ports are nice for reusing a network run to a device that isn't latency sensitive like a projector for control data. Newer generation of these devices are also integrating various sensors like temperature, humidity and ambient light which are useful for tying into an automation system.
Daisy chaining as seen in this video is not optimal for audio transmission due to the additive latency. There is at least 6 network hops involved for the last unit to get its audio data (to the wi-fi access point -> core switch -> switch dedicated to the amp cluster -> three more hops through other Sonos amps). For something like playing music in a room of off a phone, this isn't noticeable as there no reference to determine how the skew in time. However with the audio source being say a movie or a console game, there is an end user expectation of when audio should be heard. This is similar in concept to how video scalers can introduce a few frames of latency in a video feed which can become noticeable for gaming. If there are enough ports on the main switch, I'd have direct wired them all into that or provisioned a larger switch for just the amplifiers to cut down on the daisy chain hops. While audio is latency sensitive, the bandwidth requirements are not that great.
Do they use this for anything besides music? Wattage and latency restrictions don't matter much if there are separate speakers for TV

I think the better solution is single board computers or arduino/teeny. If you were gonna buy that many standalone clients, but wire the audio across instead of ethernet (why?), then you should use a better server and a mixer or pcie cards.

A thought - use the 2x4 to stand the plywood 3.5” off the wall, with a dead space behind that can accommodate all the cords. On the corner side, hinge the plywood with a heavy duty gate hinge.
Easy access behind.
Use the solid works model to determine where to cut slots for the cords to run through right by the equipment.
All the speaker cables can be routed from the hinge side with 3-4” of slack to allow the panel to open up.
I did a similar thing for a 55” tv mount that I needed to go 360 degrees to allow viewing from a different area :)
13:16 mounting to the wall is super easy, one person, if you first put a 2x4 at the bottom point you'd like to mount, mounted into the studs, then put the panel on top of the now horizontal 2x4, and mount the panel.

I really like watching these videos, but betting on SONOS for a setup like this is risky. Calling it "furniture" is completely ignoring that they went out of their way to brick older units, and ended up barely supporting older units in a legacy app (can't combine new and old). They have shown that they don't particularly like to support their products for long, so chances are the App will stop supporting these units in the future. Maybe I'm just being cynical. I invested quite some money in Sonos to begin but I will never will buy anything Sonos again. I like my speakers and audio system to have lifespan counted as decades, not years.

@@LinusTechTips Buying 2nd hand even if you can afford brand new helps mitigate loss if Sonos do anything stupid and with a team of tech professionals on hand I'm sure you could find a workaround if Sonos drop support. I set up my audio with 2nd hand Denon amps and avoided wifi using older equipment but I won't be tempted to upgrade at some point although I do like your set-up. Good job.

Anyway, with this setup it's fairly easy to replace the central control part of it, if needed. So all in all a nice solution. Love these house update videos btw 😀

If anyone is interested in a multi speaker setup, you might want to look into a 70v commercial setup. Wiring is so much easier, you run wires from speaker to speaker. You set the amount of watts each speakers pull and as long as they all add up to less what your amp can run everything should work ok. I picked up a used system off marketplace and am running 8 speakers throughout the house, 4 in the garage and 6 outside.
This is something that I would love to see Linus address now as this is the perfect illustration of a MAJOR investment in a technology that was simply abandoned by the make a few months later. What now? What are the consumers options? What has Linus done? But this video needs to be updated post the SONOS change in hardware and service.
Ive been a low voltage tech for oing on 20 years and every phase of what you've been doing yourself is part of my job. And when it comes to the home audio part Ive always said TO NON-CUSTOMERS that I would go to best buy and grab a 3.1 or 5.1 sony B.T. surround system for each room that would sound way better and cost a 3rd of the price. Then hang each rooms remote next to the light switch if its a room that would normally get a V\C. And all my friends which are also in construction in 1 way or another would be impressed. And I wouldn't have to spend all day trying to justify why I spent so much money
I forgot 1 other important fact about my dream.
In 1 year when its time for a upgrade I can rebox each system and gift it to someone for X-Mas\BDay and\or if a speaker blows there is no ladder involved which my future self appreciates sense I don't have the same balance Iused too. 😊

I'm planning a whole house audio setup also. Except my plan is to run everything off my server (multiple instances of Mopidy is one possible plan, another is a project called music-assistant) and use a bunch of USB audio cards to run ~300w class-D amplifiers for each zone. Should be less than $20/zone and immune to some company shutting it down. When it's done, you should be able to control it from Home Assistant, ideally from your phone or wall mounted tablets (there's this really cool project somebody did to make a wall mount for Kindle Fires that's magnetic and does wireless charging, so you can pull the tablet off the wall, use it, then put it back to use it on the wall and charge).
Very interesting. What kind of USB audio cards are you looking at? What kind of limits are you going to hit if you have a large amount of zones all running from the same server?
@@remyroyster Basically just USB audio dongles off Amazon. The sort of thing you'd use for an Android phone with only USB C. Some of those have 24 bit, 192kHz DACs in them. Now, if you look at the science of all that, I'm really not sure it buys you anything beyond standard 16 bit, 44kHz, but it has it nevertheless.
Biggest problem I anticipate if I run a bunch of zones at once is bandwidth on the USB bus. Alot of these don't do USB audio 2.0 (at least as far as I can tell - documentation can be spotty). That means you actually end up limited to USB 1 speeds, if I understand USB hub topology correctly. So, running a bunch of them at 24 bits, 192kHz might get tricky. At 44kHz, 16bit, a single root controller should be able to handle multiple zones, no problem. That's going to need some experimentation.
Another problem might also be the power supply for the zone amplifiers. The plan is that you have a bunch of class D amplifier boards (the sort of thing you can get cheap off eBay or Alliexpress) running off one big 24V power supply. Now, you actually need alot less power to drive speakers to unreasonably loud levels than you might think, but if a bunch of zones all hit at the same time, it could dip the rail, so I'll have to look out for that.
I don't think CPU and RAM performance will be too much of a problem. But things might look different if I'm running 10 zones at once, especially if it's 10 zones playing different things. Have to see about that one.
This whole thing is actually inspired by what a Debian developer named Bdale Garbee did after his house burned in a forest fire. Lookup an article on LWN called "Whole-house audio with free hardware and software". So, there is some existence proof something like this should be able to work.
@@ccoder4953 What about a bunch of Raspberry Pi, one for each room/passive speaker with a DigiAMP+ hat? The case+hat+power supply would cost around $60 USD + the actual raspberry pi (cost can very depending on various models/providers). That hat can drive 2x35 Watts channel which seems enough for most *good enough* celling/wall passive speaker.
Just a simple question: why not go for the Bluesound rackmount option? You have 4 zones per 2U-unit. It also sounds a LOT better than Sonos and has more convenient features. And concerning support: even the 1st gen Bluesound (10 years old now) supports 24 bit audio (REAL 24 bit in stead of downsampled to 16 bit) ánd it works in the same app still...
Sonos has a LOT easier to use system, you can also fit 4 homes on a 2u unit if you use the new sonos amps. I understand why Linus used the old ones, but the new amps make more sense to use in 99% of use cases
