  • With the help of on-line websites like Ancestry a few clicks will lead you to your family roots. But one Virginia man’s curiosity about his past kept leading him to one dead end after another until he hit pay dirt in Brunswick County. In his latest feature Greg McQuade introduces us to the part-time genealogist who found more than he hoped for - hiding in plain sight. Richie Blick has been hunting for his ancestral home for decades with no luck. Last summer Richie discovered and bought the rundown family home built in the 1700’s. The Blick family plantation reclaimed by Mother Nature had been abandoned for nearly 60 years. Richie’s roots stretch back 11 generations to this land which once numbered 1,000 acres. Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers as well as enslaved people lived, worked and died here. Richie wants to turn rare landmark into a non-profit education center. Richie says finding the home was better than striking gold.

I love everything about this! Been following the Blick Plantation story from the get-go on social media. It's heartwarming, fascinating and so wonderful to see the history come full circle.
