When your mind hasn’t been worked in certain areas those ‘’mental muscles’’ don’t work as well. That’s why they went for yes/no questions as those pathways will be most likely still used quite a bit. It’s stunning that even though they asked a yes/no question, the music stimulated him as so much to continue to communicate at length more than he normally does. That was the point of this exercise. …A yes/no question then acts as a place to start. The music he loved stimulated him to go past what his norm was.

@BAK - That was my first thought too! My jaw literally dropped. This whole thing was beautiful spiritually. It gave me hope that there are still some very extraordinary people out there taking care of our loved ones or ourselves. The dr and the caretaker were amazing. That has not been mine and my family's experiences over the years. Not all family members are as dedicated and still so obviously caring as this daughter was right out of the gate, much less 10 years down the road. I so needed to see and hear every aspect of this video. The professionals in this program and the family member has Blessed more people than they will ever know.
@Dannydolan88I think you believe in him because you were taught to, like people in Muslim or Jewish countries are taught about their God's or people in native Germany were taught about the war
I graduated over 20 years ago and recently found out that music and arts are being from cut in hometown high school. It disturbs me. Music is a universal language with great healing power. The arts are necessary for a healthy people.
@@seth_5394 It is disturbing. The human psyche needs stimulation and an open mental universe that is filled with many unexplored paths; these paths will never be taken and expanded upon unless we train our minds to embrace the possibilities. I believe humans would never evolve without art. It's amazing how art can help heal the soul.
I was going to write the Exact same thing...She is beautiful and caring. Many years ago I was a home companion and took care of the elderly....it was the best job and I became family! Bless you and them!!
Same with my dad. He was also shockingly good at math and very good card player even when he didn’t know who he was playing with, who I was. He was just an extremely smart guy even when his brain was dying. I hated watching that happen though. Dad was a very successful brain doctor, a genius, but he just lost his mind. I know he never wanted to live like that. Diabetes is an awful disease that runs in my family and just really takes a toll on everyone as they age, leads to dementia and so many other not so wonderful things we have to live with. I’m sure careful with my diet and physical fitness now that I’ve been diagnosed with it too. I already know what’s in store for me so I’m doing all I can to mitigate the damage.
I am so sorry to hear that as I know the pain and I know the struggle …my father became a TBI patient in 2007 and passed in 2017. As you know there are countless types of these injuries with varying levels of damage resulting in various amounts of symptoms. It was lots wrapped into one and he thought he was a child sometimes or we would be out to eat and when the waitress asked what type of drink he’d like he responded “Schaffer’s Beer” LOL it was funny as hell when it wasn’t sad amongst other things and for one more for context….he would call my sister not by her name but by the name of a girl he went to school with in 3rd grade….the mind is a f’in fascinating scary thing for real….but the 2 things that he never ever forgot were jokes and music. NEVER and get always responded to each of them the same . RIP pop the man upstairs needed you home. ILY

@@PeterPete Ok. You have no argument here. I love music always will. It can be very therapeutically healing at times. But then there's people like you, who pretend not to understand some music just to get a reaction. And with that being said. Goodnight.

I saw that .... Old memories popped up ! We relate because its happened to us but as for his case his memories is all he's got when he remembers them . Emotion came up with me too watching that part .
I could feel him singing “I’ll be home for Christmas”. He’s stuck in a broken shell in a nursing home, but that song takes him back to feelings and memories of love, joy, life and family.
I saw a video of a woman who had been a prima ballerina in NYC in the 60s. She was now in a care home suffering from dementia. She wasn't really able to communicate anymore. One day a caregiver put headphones on her and the music she heard was Swan Lake. She began doing the hand movements she had when she had danced onstage. Even her facial expressions changed as she "danced" again. It brought me to tears to see her come alive again. Music can touch everyone's soul.
There is is no mortality we are all immortal, is just that our souls had got to comfortable with our earthly bodies and we want to stay because its the way we can be by our loved ones.
Before my grandfather died in 2020, he began to suffer from dementia. Funny enough I have the same interest in music he did at my age. I soon learned playing music from the 60’s really changed his demeanor. I would play Joe Cocker, The Doors, and Jimi Hendrix. After a few times of playing this music for him, he began to remember things from the 60’s. He told me he had seen Jimi Hendrix in concert, and remembered not having any money to buy a ticket for The Doors, so he figured out a way behind the stage and smoked pot with some roadies back stage listening to Jim Morrison that way. And, telling me the story of him missing his ride to get to Woodstock. He had been able to remember so many things from decades before, but forget what he ate for breakfast. I plan to write a book for my grandfather. I’ve gathered enough of his life stories to fill a book. After his passing, I inherited his entire record collection. Almost every single one of those vinyls are originals from the year of release. It’s bitter sweet losing my grandfather. I miss him so much, but will cherish these records until the day I die. Music is incredibly important. It’s such a beautiful thing humans share together.
It has been known for DECADES that dementia patients react very well to their own music being played for them. It improves their brain function and it even slows the progress of the disease. Why isn't this used in every nursing home in the country?
Because they don't want people viable, they want people to be dependent on the medical system. The ones who actually care wish there was something they themselves could do to bring that vibrance back, but the industry as a whole wants "patients" and not " productives". God bless those people in this video who made that man's day. Dare I say with my heart and soul I thank God He had mercy and took my parents Home to Him so they would not have to suffer thru this pandemic, but mostly before their dementia each got worse. My sis and I wouldn't have been able to deal with seeing them in that way during all this, esp. in my hometown NYC
@@CrownedOne919 I'm so sorry about your mom and dad. But I hear what you're saying that it's actually better that they went sooner, rather than later. :( I lived in NYC during all of 2020, so I also know what you mean about how bad the pandemic was there. And you're absolutely right about the powers that be wanting us to be patients. There's no money in healthy people. Medical doctors aren't even trained in nutrition in med school--hence, the horrible advice they give on what to eat, how to lose weight, etc. They want you to be ill, to buy their drugs and to end up in a nursing home.
One or my patients was a caretakee in an elderly home. He was so pationate about his work that some of the grumpiest residents would only let him help them. Told me he always made sure they bathed, has a nice change of clothes and he even combed their hair to make them feel handsome again. What a wonderful man that was.
The lady who’s the recreation therapist cares about her patients- she got emotional just talking about how they respond to music and nothing else. The man who’s listening to the music seems very kind.
My mother had Alzheimer's, and Daddy would play her favorite hymns for her. Even when she couldn't communicate any longer, she'd sing those old gospel songs without missing one single word. Precious memories! 💙
Imagine being stuck in a chair spending to much time alone and the hospital noises only. Everyone needs something to stimulate. Amazing he looked so sad before.
I used to work in a nursing home. I spoke to all my patients-verbal and nonverbal. A doctor had written in a patient’s chart that they didn’t know they were in the world. That made me so angry that I went into the nonverbal patient’s room and asked the patient how they were doing. For the first time in the 1.5 years I worked there, the patient responded. I almost fainted 😂 After that, I continued to talk to the patient and sometimes sing as I cared for her. One day I was singing and I saw tears in her eyes. It’s been over a decade, but I will never forget that.
I had never heard that Cab Calloway song, or any of his songs, and now I’m fan. I’m in my early twenties and this dude just gave me a music recommendation that rocked my world.
I can't believe his voice is so smooth and he can sing so well after all that time! If I get a wish when I am old I'd like to still be able to sing like him.
At 4:39 , as he's singing "I'll be home for Christmas," and in between the phrase "I'll be home for christmas....You can plan on me," you can see the song bringing a memory of his to life. It's absolutely beautiful and makes me tear up.
I'm just 62 but I have serious memory issues due to brain injury and trauma. Music is so powerful. It can soothe and calm, it can inspire...it's like medicine...
I have a memory care resident that starts to die sometimes. He stops eating, drinking, making waste, talking, but if you make sure to play enough Johnny Cash throughout the day and night he always bounces back eventually.
My grandpa was all about Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn before he became unable to process and the full tier of Alzheimers set in sometime in the late 2000s.
Congratulations! You will be making a real difference in many people’s quality of life. When my grandmother was in assisted-living and had come to the point where she could no longer speak, she would still sing the soprano part of the songs we sang for her. And when she was no longer responsive (At the age of 97) she would move her toes in time to whatever we were singing to her. You will help people re-engage with life. You will help young children to connect, with life and with others. What a contribution you will be making! I don’t know you, but I am proud of you.
Not only did he perk up, but he also opened up those wind pipes of his, and he sounds pretty damn good in my opinion. Great video recommendation UA-cam. ✌️😎
I had a client with aphasia. She could not form words at all. I discovered she could sing though! Soon we were singing to each other, "Do you want to wear your red shirt or the blue?" "Today, I want to wear a sweater with my blue shirt." It started with simple conversations, but she eventually started singing me her life stories too. She was so delighted to be able to communicate again!
As my mom was suffering dementia, I would never ask her question about present times. I would ask her if she liked riding her bike in the second grade with her favorite cousin.... Hers eyes would light up and she would talk, talk, talk and be so happy. Have patience with these folks and find a niche that they have in their mind. I'm 60 and I have told my kids that if I get this way......please play karaoke songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s..... Just because he called her a hat, doesn't mean he didn't recognize her as his wife. Sometimes the mouth releases different words, replaces what the true item, or person is but they are recognized as the correct person. It takes a bit to thumb through the mental files. It doesn't have to be, my grandmother (95 in 2 weeks) lives alone, still drives, is active in her yard (gardening and such), walks and moves around without any assistance. All the credit is due to her change in diet she became extremely aware and wanted to learn about food and it's effects on the body after she beat breast cancer. Ever since then she's been doing everything in her power to live a good quality of life. Now of course she won't escape death, but the goal is to not go out in pain and agony( cancers, diseases, illneses). And to one day just drift off in her sleep of old age. Most of these diseases that we are faced with when we get old are the cause of not so good diets and what we put in our body. If you can change that you have a very high chance of not having to deal with these illnesses.
I can’t prepare you for it… its an honor to be allowed to be present at their end of life. Whatever the beginning and middle was like. The end is painful and joyous, simultaneously. For me anyway. This is why music/art should NEVER be absent in schools.
YES. Everyone should have access to music or any form of art.
Here here !!!!!
Yes, band in high school was one of my greatest motivation to get up and go to school every morning

My Dad had dementia. He responded best to joking around. That was always his thing.
People with a good sense of humor would make him light up.
Life, love and Happiness!
ILY

I saw a video of a woman who had been a prima ballerina in NYC in the 60s. She was now in a care home suffering from dementia. She wasn't really able to communicate anymore.
This was beautiful, thank you for sharing
What an incredible legacy he's left for you. ❤

I think if you ever have need of money, that your grandfather would be happy that he can provide for you by selling those records.
Amen, sister!
It's all about the bottom line. This country is evil as fuck in almost all its business practices
Unfortunately it’s the same reason ALL politicians want the crime rate to be high. It cost the taxpayer money and they get more

May Oliver Sacks rest in peace. I hope he's listening to his favorite music up there with all his friends and family.
Wow, he becomes so expressive and social when you ask him about music.
He likes music so much
He’s definitely passionate about music. Brought some tears to my eyes

When I was a teen, I read Oliver Sacks’ brilliant book, “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat.” It sparked in me a life-long love of science and interest in neurology and the human brain. RiP, Dr. Sacks.
Just because he called her a hat, doesn't mean he didn't recognize her as his wife. Sometimes the mouth releases different words, replaces what the true item, or person is but they are recognized as the correct person. It takes a bit to thumb through the mental files. Those with Brain injuries and stroke go through the same thing. If you drop a computer out a window it will have some issues. Some are fixable, maybe all with the correct 'technician' (if from a accident). If it's from diet, (dementia, Alzheimers) the efforts have to be extreme, and the food in a rehabilitation center and N.H. will have you or a loved one decline with continuing body, brain inflammation.

@@faithm9284 Yes. I’m recovering from a TBI. My husband made cornbread and I called it scarecrow. The connection was corn to both words in my mind.
6 months ago my mommas a major stroke. She has trouble with short term memory. Some of the words or memories get mixed up. When she gets upset I remind her ”Mom it’s like a file cabinet got knocked over. All the files are still in there. They just got mixed up and we need to reorganize the,”. That helps her in the moment. And it helps me too in the moment. Because inside inside I’m devastated for her.

I agree very much w All you said ESPECIALLY the brain and food connection! I'm constantly warning people about inflammation from additives , preservatives, sugar, take out food ,junk food, and must definitely am glad you mentioned how the food in a rehabilitation bldg ,etcwill do nothing but add to decline You are so right and many ppl won't think of that ,especially as they have enough on their minds at that point I fully and strongly BLV we are literally what we eat and that what we do and don't eat makes ALL the difference as to whether a person will decline or turn back around in the right direction .As they say sugar is the enemy (+ of crse all fake sugars r even worse) Cinnamons agreat replacement and a heart protector Sorry I went in a spiel I'm just very glad u mentioned all this ,specifically at end of yr comment Why be in a program or bldg trying to improve and at the same time ,eating all the things that'll do exact opposite to you ,your body your organs, brain def.includrd!
I think you should put a comment mentioning this ,in addition to the reply u ment it in That way many more ppl will see it and I guarantee you ,your words will make some good differenced to those that heed em ! WELL 👍

As a young person it stills scares me to eventually see my parents like this, I know it's a part of life, but still.
Its hard when someone dies and you are left with questions unanswered, hurt gone unsoothed.. etc.
….. what’s done, is done…..
You'll be grateful they made it to old life. People out there die young n never even get to have a child. Make this time worth it, remind your parents how grateful you are that they brought you into this life.
@@AnakinSkywalker909

Best rendition of I'll be home for Christmas I've ever heard.
Old boy straight up came back from the dead and started jamming on the stoop when they started playing him some of that Jam Master Calloway. Dude got revived by the beat, and that's beautiful to see
I hate that they're cutting so many music programs in school and other places. they should see that music is just as important as academics.
What's worse is they discontinued academics
At least more important than sports
I believe music "hardwires" memories/reboot into your mind.

Thank you Oliver Sacs for your research into Music and Memory.
I am so happy my sister and I brought a cd player to my moms group home where she needed 24 hour care for dementia. When I played a big band boogie boogie her feet began to move and tap to the music. I was a ballroom dance instructor for 3 years so I knew how to lead a swing. I helped her out of her chair and we jitter bugged for several songs to her delight. She did not know exactly who I was but she knew she knew me but she knew that music and how to dance to it. Every time I played that music she wanted to dance. She came alive for those precious moments. The last time we danced she had to sit down in the middle of our first dance as she was too tired. She died 3 days later. I am so thankful I took the time to dance with my mom in her final years.

What types of music did you sing? You mentioned parodies. Parodies of what songs? Original songs, or covers?
@@BakaTaco my favorite parodies were in the 80s when Blondie came out with the tide is high.
