When your mind hasn’t been worked in certain areas those ‘’mental muscles’’ don’t work as well. That’s why they went for yes/no questions as those pathways will be most likely still used quite a bit. It’s stunning that even though they asked a yes/no question, the music stimulated him as so much to continue to communicate at length more than he normally does. That was the point of this exercise. …A yes/no question then acts as a place to start. The music he loved stimulated him to go past what his norm was.

I saw a video of a woman who had been a prima ballerina in NYC in the 60s. She was now in a care home suffering from dementia. She wasn't really able to communicate anymore. One day a caregiver put headphones on her and the music she heard was Swan Lake. She began doing the hand movements she had when she had danced onstage. Even her facial expressions changed as she "danced" again. It brought me to tears to see her come alive again. Music can touch everyone's soul.

@@Phyoomz Oh yes. It entirely depends on the person. Some can't bear the thought of not being able to live a normal and self sustained life, much less do simple tasks for themselves. Others are content spending every moment they can in this world near to those they love. And those are only two of endless possibilities...
Before my grandfather died in 2020, he began to suffer from dementia. Funny enough I have the same interest in music he did at my age. I soon learned playing music from the 60’s really changed his demeanor. I would play Joe Cocker, The Doors, and Jimi Hendrix. After a few times of playing this music for him, he began to remember things from the 60’s. He told me he had seen Jimi Hendrix in concert, and remembered not having any money to buy a ticket for The Doors, so he figured out a way behind the stage and smoked pot with some roadies back stage listening to Jim Morrison that way. And, telling me the story of him missing his ride to get to Woodstock. He had been able to remember so many things from decades before, but forget what he ate for breakfast. I plan to write a book for my grandfather. I’ve gathered enough of his life stories to fill a book. After his passing, I inherited his entire record collection. Almost every single one of those vinyls are originals from the year of release. It’s bitter sweet losing my grandfather. I miss him so much, but will cherish these records until the day I die. Music is incredibly important. It’s such a beautiful thing humans share together.
There is is no mortality we are all immortal, is just that our souls had got to comfortable with our earthly bodies and we want to stay because its the way we can be by our loved ones.
I know very few people who avoid the elderly. They're embraced. That being said, if someone has reverted back to a giant baby I'd also put them in a home
I saw that .... Old memories popped up ! We relate because its happened to us but as for his case his memories is all he's got when he remembers them . Emotion came up with me too watching that part .
One or my patients was a caretakee in an elderly home. He was so pationate about his work that some of the grumpiest residents would only let him help them. Told me he always made sure they bathed, has a nice change of clothes and he even combed their hair to make them feel handsome again. What a wonderful man that was.
Same with my dad. He was also shockingly good at math and very good card player even when he didn’t know who he was playing with, who I was. He was just an extremely smart guy even when his brain was dying. I hated watching that happen though. Dad was a very successful brain doctor, a genius, but he just lost his mind. I know he never wanted to live like that. Diabetes is an awful disease that runs in my family and just really takes a toll on everyone as they age, leads to dementia and so many other not so wonderful things we have to live with. I’m sure careful with my diet and physical fitness now that I’ve been diagnosed with it too. I already know what’s in store for me so I’m doing all I can to mitigate the damage.
I am so sorry to hear that as I know the pain and I know the struggle …my father became a TBI patient in 2007 and passed in 2017. It was lots wrapped into one and he thought he was a child sometimes or we would be out to eat and when the waitress asked what type of drink he’d like he responded “Schaffer’s Beer” LOL it was funny as hell when it wasn’t sad amongst other things and for one more for context….he would call my sister not by her name but by the name of a girl he went to school with in 3rd grade….the mind is a f’in fascinating scary thing for real….but the 2 things that he never ever forgot were jokes and music. NEVER and get always responded to each of them the same . RIP pop the man upstairs needed you home. ILY

She was so delighted to be able to communicate again!

It has been known for DECADES that dementia patients react very well to their own music being played for them. It improves their brain function and it even slows the progress of the disease. Why isn't this used in every nursing home in the country?
Because they don't want people viable, they want people to be dependent on the medical system. The ones who actually care wish there was something they themselves could do to bring that vibrance back, but the industry as a whole wants "patients" and not " productives". God bless those people in this video who made that man's day. Dare I say with my heart and soul I thank God He had mercy and took my parents Home to Him so they would not have to suffer thru this pandemic, but mostly before their dementia each got worse. My sis and I wouldn't have been able to deal with seeing them in that way during all this, esp. in my hometown NYC
@@CrownedOne919 I'm so sorry about your mom and dad. But I hear what you're saying that it's actually better that they went sooner, rather than later. :( I lived in NYC during all of 2020, so I also know what you mean about how bad the pandemic was there. And you're absolutely right about the powers that be wanting us to be patients. There's no money in healthy people. Medical doctors aren't even trained in nutrition in med school--hence, the horrible advice they give on what to eat, how to lose weight, etc. They want you to be ill, to buy their drugs and to end up in a nursing home.

My grandpa was all about Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn before he became unable to process and the full tier of Alzheimers set in sometime in the late 2000s.
My mother had Alzheimer's, and Daddy would play her favorite hymns for her. Even when she couldn't communicate any longer, she'd sing those old gospel songs without missing one single word. Precious memories! 💙
It doesn't have to be, my grandmother (95 in 2 weeks) lives alone, still drives, is active in her yard (gardening and such), walks and moves around without any assistance. All the credit is due to her change in diet she became extremely aware and wanted to learn about food and it's effects on the body after she beat breast cancer. Ever since then she's been doing everything in her power to live a good quality of life. Now of course she won't escape death, but the goal is to not go out in pain and agony( cancers, diseases, illneses). And to one day just drift off in her sleep of old age. Most of these diseases that we are faced with when we get old are the cause of not so good diets and what we put in our body. If you can change that you have a very high chance of not having to deal with these illnesses.

People always have a choice to make in life. However they CHOSE not to care for their elderly parents, instead they pawned their parents to abodonment home, called nursing home.
@@msgould5731 no, that's really not the case. Some people physically cannot look after them, some cannot cater for their needs. It's not as black and white as you think. It's telling that here in Scotland there is less care homes as personal care is free here (carers helping in homes and offering families support to help look after the elderly) compared to England where personal care isn't free. People cannot afford to help them in all cases
That is the gringo culture. In Mexico and most of Latin America we take care of our elders not only for gratitude for what they did for us but also for them to be surrounded of love and protection.
Some elderly people need constant day in and day out care. It is not reasonable to expect one person to do that. Multiple people on shifts is much easier and safer for everybody involved. Have you ever cared for a dementia patient? I’m 24 and cared for my grandma for half a year before we were able to get her into a nursing home. She needed 24/7 supervision which I just could not give to her. She became violent and verbally abusive as well, although I truly think it was the dementia that put her that way.

As a young person it stills scares me to eventually see my parents like this, I know it's a part of life, but still.
I can’t prepare you for it… its an honor to be allowed to be present at their end of life. Whatever the beginning and middle was like. The end is painful and joyous, simultaneously. For me anyway.

You made me cry. Blessings to you and yours in Jesus'name and for his glory ☺️🙏🗝️🕊️🔥💗✝️
Thanks 😭
you realize this more and more as your age until you find its your own reality
Thank you for the great work you do!
Wow, he becomes so expressive and social when you ask him about music.
He likes music so much
He’s definitely passionate about music. Brought some tears to my eyes
At 16 i was in a coma for 4.5 months and if my mother didnt bring my walkman to the hospital my brain waves wouldnt have come back. Music is truly healing. Henry's eyes were so big when hearing and enjoying the music it made me cry.
When he hit that scat! I bet he was something else as a young man. This was a beautiful video. Thank you for sharing.
Great voice !
I cried!
It's amazing what music can do. I love that his carers found something to make his life blossom again. He has a nice voice I think too. ♥️♥️♥️
I bet he was! He's still in there. Music is life!!
Great video....that scat though😀😀🤣
I started crying when he started singing I'll Be Home For Christmas. My heart can't take it.
Same, 😢😢❤❤... I couldn't hold it together...
Yes, but think of the pleasure it brought somebody whose life had been locked up for so long.
Your heart was singing Jess x
bless you and your big little heart
Yes... it was such a beautiful and profound experience ❤️ may god bless you with peace and abundance
It was like he came back to life. Wow
Weekend at Bernie's, I love his soul. Regardless the tuff times in the old days, he still enjoyed the music.
@@gabrielandujar943 haha, it's Weekend at Bernie's II actually. No magic spell in the first one.
Seriously, its as if he jumped back into his body
Music is the songs to the key of life may Allah bless you my brother stay positive and prayed up love kelelah
That nurse is such a beautiful human.
I am so very grateful that we have people like her.
When my mind goes, I hope I am left in the care of such an amazing person.
Age is so tragic. Such a vibrant lively soul trapped in a failing vessel.
Jesus Christ is the solution to every problems of the soul, spirit n body. we should seek the Eternal Savior while we have our being. Afterthe departure from this realm there are other realms of existence the soul of will enter its call Hell n Heaven!
You know what even more tragic? Death.
But not for long. He will be made whole when he goes to be with his Father in Heaven.
@@shirleymcpherson7719 You didn't watch the video, did you? It's not about your personal faith, it's about another soul at the dusk of this life. You just have to hog the attention and spawn propaganda? So childish and self centered.
I suppose that if you read this you'll feel attacked, because people who behave like you did get off on criticism. Go ahead. It's a foolish dog that barks at the flying bird.
@@oldschoolfunkster1 death isnt tragic at all its blissful
Not only did he perk up, but he also opened up those wind pipes of his, and he sounds pretty damn good in my opinion. Great video recommendation UA-cam. ✌️😎
He DOES sound good! Get him more Cab Calloway, get him his music from his era, get him Singin in the rain, this right here, its God's work.
I agree. He's a very good singer
💯
Yes, he has a lovely voice, and I know that song, too.
Wait until the heavy metal era are in nursing homes. "Nurse bring me my Slayer"!
I never thought I'd get this many likes. Jim Breuer actually first made this joke
Ikr. If I'm ever out of it, just play me some Dethklok and I'll be spry as a chicken lol.
Anthrax "Caught in the mosh" would probably be banned . . .
Chair mosh!!!
None of you will be listening to metal in a nursing home. You'll hang that shit up the first time it almost gives you a fucking heart attack lmao
Motroized chair moshpits.
Big ups to the caring nurse . She knows that not only the medicine heals . Fond memories does heal as well.
"Ask him yes or no questions"
Interviewer: Why is the experimentally measured value of the muon's anomalous magnetic dipole moment ("muon g−2") significantly different from the theoretically predicted value of that physical constant?
Ok, you got me on that one. Now give me back my headphones and put on some Aretha Franklin
YES
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Tu Chenz “yes”
hahahahahahha
It is purely absurd music hasn't been part of therapy for our elders for the past 120 years or so. It is essential to living.
My great great grandfather was in the war in my home country extremely strict, ruthless, abusive and hated anything fun...once he entered into old age, became senile, dementia and withering away the one thing he hated, music, was the only thing that gave him life and peace and calmness...it was extremely emotional for our family...music is what will bring peace, healing and love to this world, it's the key and the answer
They've instead filled our elderly with chemicals and kept them isolated and our society has greatly sinned in this way.
They do it in my cousin’s job in the nursing home. (Musical bands played for them once a month)
That’s not enough. They need it daily.
Music is not part of modern medicine because doctors cannot profit from it. Duh.
Not much of a nursing home
Old boy straight up came back from the dead and started jamming on the stoop when they started playing him some of that Jam Master Calloway. Dude got revived by the beat, and that's beautiful to see
He has a beautiful voice 🎶🎵 🎼
When I was a teen, I read Oliver Sacks’ brilliant book, “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat.” It sparked in me a life-long love of science and interest in neurology and the human brain. RiP, Dr. Sacks.
Just because he called her a hat, doesn't mean he didn't recognize her as his wife. Sometimes the mouth releases different words, replaces what the true item, or person is but they are recognized as the correct person. It takes a bit to thumb through the mental files. Those with Brain injuries and stroke go through the same thing. If you drop a computer out a window it will have some issues. Some are fixable, maybe all with the correct 'technician' (if from a accident). If it's from diet, (dementia, Alzheimers) the efforts have to be extreme, and the food in a rehabilitation center and N.H. will have you or a loved one decline with continuing body, brain inflammation.
@@faithm9284 thats deep
@@faithm9284 Yes. I’m recovering from a TBI. My husband made cornbread and I called it scarecrow. The connection was corn to both words in my mind.
6 months ago my mommas a major stroke. She has trouble with short term memory. Some of the words or memories get mixed up. When she gets upset I remind her ”Mom it’s like a file cabinet got knocked over. All the files are still in there. They just got mixed up and we need to reorganize the,”. That helps her in the moment. And it helps me too in the moment. Because inside inside I’m devastated for her.

I agree very much w All you said ESPECIALLY the brain and food connection! I'm constantly warning people about inflammation from additives , preservatives, sugar, take out food ,junk food, and must definitely am glad you mentioned how the food in a rehabilitation bldg ,etcwill do nothing but add to decline You are so right and many ppl won't think of that ,especially as they have enough on their minds at that point I fully and strongly BLV we are literally what we eat and that what we do and don't eat makes ALL the difference as to whether a person will decline or turn back around in the right direction .As they say sugar is the enemy (+ of crse all fake sugars r even worse) Cinnamons agreat replacement and a heart protector Sorry I went in a spiel I'm just very glad u mentioned all this ,specifically at end of yr comment Why be in a program or bldg trying to improve and at the same time ,eating all the things that'll do exact opposite to you ,your body your organs, brain def.includrd!
I think you should put a comment mentioning this ,in addition to the reply u ment it in That way many more ppl will see it and I guarantee you ,your words will make some good differenced to those that heed em ! WELL 👍

It’s heartbreaking seeing older people in nursing homes. I understand some people don’t have a choice to put there loved ones in nursing homes but it still heartbreaking.
Her being in a nursing home is better for both of us so that she can get the care she needs and I can focus on my mental health and my own life
@Lisa B Talmudic detected.
when he sang he sounded exactly like an original recording of that song...
damn you just roasted the shit out of the singer in the original song
He really did!
@@zAlphii not at all. you can tell if he had full control over his faculties he'd be a great singer. the way he uses vibrato, the way he projected his voice, even being mostly on pitch for the "i'll be home for christmas". this is a guy who was barely able to talk minutes ago, the level of singing he breaks into is astonishing.
