In this video I'm going to show you how to replace a control board which is what regulates your high efficiency dryer and allows it to work correctly. Basically it is the computer for the dryer. The part that I have a link in the description for is a part number 8546219 this is for whirlpool and Maytag appliances. . And you will get it from Amazon shipped immediately. In this video I will show you how to disassemble the dryer and where to find a cheat sheet that the repair technicians use to follow step by step in diagnosing your dryer problem. The symptoms for this dryer was that it would not spin when you pushed the start button. It would just beep and make a click noise. I'll show you how to remove the bottom panel to access the booklet of instructions with wiring diagrams and how to use a simple ohm meter to test the motor and narrow down what your problem is using basic troubleshooting. I appreciate you watching my videos.

The two Amazon links are not useful. The first one's page is removed; the second one is "currently unavailable." The eBay link does appear to work, but not sure if that is an affiliate link. I'd like to support your channel as a thank-you for this excellent to-the-point video, but not sure if I can with those links. Just wanted to let you know.

Perhaps the clearest repair video I've ever watched on UA-cam. I have the absolutely identical symptoms on my Maytag Epic dryer, right down to the 1.9 Ohm reading. I've paid the almost $300 Canadian and ordered the replacement control board which is fortunately still available. I'll know if it worked in a few days. Even knowing the replacement board is very likely the solution, I probably would have still bought a replacement dryer if it wasn't for my washer/dryer stacking requirement. The 10 year old Maytag Epic washer still works fine doing the repair is easier than finding a way than fabricate stacking brackets for a non-matching new dryer. Besides, this exercise has been kind of fun...

Quick followup: the board replacement worked! Upon closer inspection of the burnt location on the old control board, it is a $3 relay in the location labelled "Motor" that failed. If you're adept at soldering/desoldering (which I'm not) simply replacing this relay could be a cheap and easy fix. Relay is marked Omron G8P-1A4P-ACD 12VDC 30A 250VAC.

Thank you! I have the same dryer, with the same symptoms. An $18 digital multimeter later, and I diagnosed the exact same problem, found the same toasted circuit, bought the same replacement board from Amazon...problem solved! My guess is that I saved between $400 and $500 doing it myself, plus got a new tool, some new skills, and some good hands-on training for my sons. Thanks again!

Thank you, your video was very helpful. I have a Whirlpool Duet Dryer but I believe its the same model, different brand name. The dryer is 14 years now and had to change the heater on it a few years back. No issues found after going through the machines self diagnostics checks. I then removed the top cover and metal bracket housing the control board. I checked the resistance between the light blue and dark blue wires on connector P1 (Pins 3 & 4); it was 2.6 Ohms suggesting that there was a problem with the control board. I ordered one from Amazon $199 following the above link. I did not see any obvious issues looking at the top side of the PCB, but on the bottom side, once removed from the metal bracket, I could see a burst spot (similar to what was shown in your video) and that the copper trace connected to the relay had burned open. I cleaned the area with wire brush and used my solder iron and solder to create a solder bridge (big blob of solder) to reconnect the circuit. I figured it was worth a shot while I wait for the new control board to come it. I replaced the board in the machine and gave it a try and eureka, it worked. I quickly cancelled my Amazon order so needless to say, it cost me nothing but some time.

I found the same issue on my board. I, like you, soldered it and hoped for the best. It fixed the issue! Fortunately, I didn't place an order for the new board :). I betting that switch (omron 1983h2 g8p-1a4p) can be replaced on the board. Found it online between $5 and $12.

My dryer didn't have a problem at that exact point on the control board, but this video was helpful! Using the technician guide (that I found from your video) I was able to determine that my thermal fuse keeps blowing because the heating element stays on and gets super hot. Followed the guide which had me test P4-3 to P4-6 resistance and the Ohms were in the failure range. Anyone else have this problem??

I have subscribed to your channel because I do appreciate you posting. I did fix my own dryer, Maytag Epic, 9 year old in part because of this video. The Amazon links do not work because you can no longer get this discontinued board, rather the only real problem is that motor relay you identified by the burn mark on the metal shield. I had the same issue, same burn mark. Amazon does sell those for about $11 cdn and it took me about an hour to do the entire repair. The last time I had a dryer fail, I was hesitant to look at self repair so paid a repair company to come out, they replaced the board. The cost to me? $425. Same problem with a newer dryer at the new house? $11 to solder in a new relay. Thank you for posting and you may want to update the info (Amazon link) as you can no longer get the board, but if you know how to solder, can do this repair for less than $12...Canadian

Thank you, sooo much formthis great video. I bought a used w/d set and after 2 loads the F01 code came on. I was so bummed that I paid a good amount for a used set and it stopped working almost immediately. I'm not particularly handy but I figured I'd try. I watched a few videos, all good but yours was the only one that mentioned using the jumper wire too. I tried the repair by just soldering the one blown joint and put it back together...no go! Took it back apart, added the wire and BINGO! Dryer is working, YEAH! Thank you, thank you.

Looks like it will be helpful. My board won't arrive for a couple of days, so we'll see what happens. I did see the troubleshooting info when I opened up the dryer the other day, but left it undisturbed. I was getting an F1 code which indicates the main control board so, for the time being, I'm trusting that the code is providing accurate information. I too have a burn mark on the side of my dryer which seems like another supporting indication that it's the control board. I will pull out the troubleshooting info and read through it now that I know how informative and (seemingly) user-friendly it is! Thanks for the video!
UPDATE: It worked! It worked! That saved me from having to buy a whole new dryer :)))......(having a repairman fix it would have been aroun $500 and the thing is 9 years old...and cost around $700 new)

Thanks! I have the exact same dryer. Worked fine last night and this morning the control panel was dead, even though the machine had power (light on inside). Not able to get it into test mode. Unplugged it several times hoping for a "reset". No good. Took it apart and started the diagnostics starting with power supply and everything was checking out OK. Plugged it back in and the control panel lit up but was frozen - no diagnostic mode. Was showing this to my wife and I repeated the steps and the damn thing started like normal. Lose wire? Part about to fail? Well, for now it's working and you saved me from a service repair and worse - an afternoon of dryer shopping!

I have a Whirlpool Stackable Duo Sport model Dryer. I found on mine ( turn on the dryer and the error code F1 comes up on the display. ) the belt had been shredded due to the following : Motor pulley cracked in half causing the belt to become shredded from rotation on broken motor pulley. Also while i was repairing the pulley i vacuumed out the unit with a stiff brush and a little elbow grease. Tools needed- 1/4" deep socket, flat screwdriver,# 15 torx screwdriver, (Vice grips needle nose and flat) also my vacuume. Doing this will save you from a fire some time in the future. TOTAL COST= $85.00.

I have the same dryer and it won't start up at all (the controls/etc don't light up) but the internal drum light turns on so I know it has power. I'm hoping it's not the whole $2-300 front circuit board thing. I managed to fix this dryer a few years ago by just soldering in a new relay (I think it was the same problem from this video, same burn mark and everything). I'm hoping there's a similar fix for this problem. Also, I never knew "dryer won't start" could mean so many different things.

I didn't have the low reading between those pins, but popped the board out anyway. The solder on one of the motor relay pins had cracked and burned. Never would have looked there if I hadn't seen this.

Great video. My control was burned out just like in the video. Too bad any place I called said the part was discontinued and the one I did find on amazon was over $500. Ended up buying a new dryer for only $100 more than the replacement part. Still a good video though.

Thank you very much for this Video but just to let you know you should make an update to it. When I tried to get an error code with the door closed like you I got nothing. But I also tried this with the door open and got and error code at that point. Thankfully for me my it was only my lint vent was clogged. Just a vacuum of the vent and it works great. Just trying to help others so that they try for the error code with the door open and closed.

There's an easy fix for the board issue shown in the video, you don't have to buy a new board, all you have to do is apply solder to that area that's burned out. The solder has been burned out over time and because of that there is no longer a connection being made which is causing the disruption. Literally takes less than 1 min to just apply solder in that hole (it's obvious which one, the one with just the lead sticking out without enough solder where the burn area is on the board - the motor relay it's called I believe) then put the board back and it'll work again, no need to replace the board... that's what worked for me, so if you see the burned area at the bottom like above that'll most likely be your fix also. Hope that saves someone time and board cost. My symptoms where that everything worked but suddenly the dryer wouldn't tumble. The buttons all worked, but when I chose a cycle and hit start, I heard the click but the dryer didn't move. I checked the thermal and the thermistor fuse first, and of course mine where fine. Thank you for your video @Foxboss9

Thank you! So far your videos have helped me remove a sock from the drain in my washer, and now diagnosing a fried control board. I do have a question I am hoping you can answer. My washer and dryer are 12 years old. Until now, we have never had to replace a part in either of them. While replacing the control board is a relatively easy fix, it does cost over $200. My fear is that because it is so old, this may just be start of more parts needing to be replaced. I don't want to end up replacing parts in a 12 year old dryer that will end up costing me as much as a new one. So my question is: Is it worth replacing the control board, or should I just look into purchasing a new one? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

    • @Foxboss9

As long as the rest of the machine is working fine, then personally I would replace the board... you can see the date on this video and from that point on we have been using our machine with no issues whatsoever.

Thanks, great step-by-step video for the same problem I was having. I have a question before buying a new board and not being able to return it. What if there is no sign of anything being fried on the back of the control board (could there still be a problem)? I get an ohm reading ranging between 1.9-2.1. Ruled out door switch, thermal switch, motor switch, belt, and thermistor so I think it was down to motor or control board.

FoxBoss, VERY NICE video. I am somewhat handy, but would not have been able to do this on my own. Here is my dilemma, would welcome your advice. I have the same issue - push the button, it won't start. (for a while there it would just take a lonnnnggg time to start, now not at all.). At any rate, I removed and tested the thermal fuse, it has continuity. Then i followed your instructions and started the diagnostics. When i did the +-+- sequence all the buttons checked out, even the start button caused a beep. So I went to Test 2, exposed the electronic module, and measured across P1-3 and P1-4, and it checked out. I have continuity. Here is the problem. I don't have easy access to the back panel. Long story, but let's just say that elegant interior design precludes me from practical action. So i cant do the rest of the tests in Test 2. And you didnt do those in your video anyway, so i would probably not do it properly. Is it likely that this is still the control module and i should just change it? Feels like that is more likely than a physical wiring issue. But its $200... so not sure what to do. Any thoughts? THANKS!!!

This was great. Found the problem. How difficult is it to just replace the Omron relay on the board? If I order the whole board, any idea on how long it will last.....just wondering because of not knowing what caused it to fry the first time, just wear and tear?

    • @Foxboss9
      @Foxboss9  8 років тому +2

I contemplated the same thing but came to the conclusion that the reason the relay went bad could have been another issue in the board. Although the board is a larger expense, in comparison to the original price of the dryer it's a fraction of what they cost new. I decided the dryer was definitely worth it and haven't had a single issue since the boards replacement over a year ago... If things continue to operate well for another 4-5 years and the board goes out again, I decide if the dryer is still worth it at that point. But so far, the 8 ball says, "all signs point to yes" :-)
