Cool video, Mel! ❄️ One thing I’ll throw out there is to be mindful that paints have differing levels of opacities. White paint is typically very opaque. More so than your blues and greens. Which is why overbrushing too much with white can leave a piece looking chalky. When you were dragging the paint out on your acrylic palette you were thinning the color down to let the white plastic board show through the color. But when you apply the color to your white primed terrain the paint wants to go on less thinly and darker. You could water it down but that may leave it too runny and paint will go where you do not want it to go. Instead, add in some white to your darkest color. This will simulate the low opacity you get by dragging your pure color out. And then keep adding white in steps as you did to step it up to your white highlight. This is especially helpful for smaller and smaller pieces of terrain where you will see less and less of that blue. Looking forward to more winter vids even though I’ve quite enough of actual winter! 😁

I've found that it works rather well to add a layer of polyeurethane gloss before shifting to lighter tones for ice.
I've also normally kind of used quite a few more layers with a start from a deeper blue/green and then using paler glues and greens for layers of drybrushes over the blue and using a mix of blue and green inks for a wash after getting to white that way followed by the gloss layer and then another white over that.

This tutorial literal pulled a project out of the fire. Building a segment of wall for a game of thrones project. My painting was looking a bit grey and ropey. Rolled it back borrowed the teal under painting technique here and it's now looking cracking. Thank you most kindly. 👍😉

Check out pictures of Lake Baikal in Russia. It has some teal ice, but it shows that far more blue ice is found in nature, in addition to the teal stuff.

Would be interesting to see what it would look like if you gave the blue a coat of satin spray first then dry brush some white. Give the ice a slight shimmer.
Mel, I live in Alaska; several times I have visited the glacier shown on the video you reference. The actual color of the ice differs depending on the amount of sun striking the glacier/ice berg. The video was filmed on a very overcast day, so the ice is a deeper shade of blue/teal. When the sun is out and shining brightly, the ice is an amazing, luminous pale blue shading down to indigo blue. Google Mendenhall Glacier Alaska, and check out the wide variety of ice colors that same cave produces depending on the amount of sun.

This looks soo cool with the piece your using? But how do you create this effect on flat surfaces?
Wondering if this would look even more like ice if you had glossed the piece before dry brushing white on it? You'd get that reflective shimmer of ice under the accumulated snow on top.

Hopefully you see this as it's quite an old video. What did you base your terrain with before adding the teal? Was it just basic white acrylic?
This has just inspired me further in one of my "little" projects :-) I'm building entire fleets of flying ships made from rock/earth, and this tutorial has made me realize that I can make an ice fleet for Northern Barbarians/Dwarves too. I got the original idea from the "Light & Darkness War" comics by Tim Veitch & Cam Kennedy (Check out t6he graphic novel for some awesome inspiration if you want something alternative to GW's Kharadron Overlords themed army). i use XPS sprayed onto grease proof paper the same way you teach in an earlier tutorial for making quick terrain, and now have some interesting "ships" that always attract attention when people see them. I use Rum 'n' Bones figures for the more diverse crew, but mostly Dwarves from a host of suppliers, along with Halflings, Humans, Orcs and more. Thanks for this amazing and inspiring video. I'm definitely going to make some ice floe/berg based airships now :-)

Did you use a foam cutter to cut that piece out, Bonus querestion. Im doing a Titanicus set right now and want to get into doing some ice lake effects on the base using GW would its be a good idea to go Base coat white, Layer on calgar blue and then white scar around the feet for cracks in the ice? your thoughts?

One of the most underrated visual effects in Skyrim is the sense of dimension you get out of the glaciers and ice bergs in the far north, where you can see the light and colors shifting as you move around them.
Only the Titanic did not see that one coming.
