"That's gonna explode like a son of a gun" holy crap the timing
OH NOOOOOO
@@Freekymoho It was a great run until it wasn't... 😔
*BEEP BEEP BEEP*
"You are already using a computer so unbelievably strong..." This is a dangerous philosophy, if no programs we currently use did performance minmaxing, computers would barely run things made 5 years ago.
I will accept that this triggered me pretty hard hahahaha
mood
i was pissed hearing that
I began REEEEEEEEEEEEEEing in my room. My housemates were worried.
Its ok, the bad karna from that statement cost him the run
Also not all software runs on your $5000 gaming super computer. And also in all my years writing embedded software, I've never written a sorting algorithm, but I have profiled and optimized a ton of code. Those sorting assignments are lessons, they're not what you spend your professional career doing.
it really triggered me hard, i was like 'how dare he say this' .
I think the difference between Vlad's cape and the Jetpack is more noticeable once you get to Neo Babylon. The jetpack is very volatile there. Also the cape can help you navigate through spikes.
It's the littles fireballs everywhere. Sometimes they spawn outta thin air too. It think it's safer to ditch the pack if you reach that place.
Vlads cape doubling blood also helps. That plus kapala and all of a sudden healing up after the Duat isnt so bad.
NL still undervalues the explosiveness of the jetpack because at this point he's made it into Neo Babylon like a generous 20 times and max 3 times of that was with a jetpack.
@Metal Sign enjoyability and variety of content after 100 runs.
@metalsign7015they’ve also made updates. Duat has a guaranteed jetpack now when you kill Anubis 2, and the elixir was buffed from the Sun challenge in the temple. Lastly, the alien compass is only available if you go Volcana to temple, and the alien compass with jetpack is by far the fastest way to get to 7-99 if you’re going for speed. I find vlads cape with clone gun strats (for 99 bombs and 99 ropes) to be the more reliable but slower path to reach 7-99
I think they did a good job balancing temple with some of the updates.
Every time NL says “Sploonky” I Pog
37:24 "that's gonna explode like a son of a gun" yes, yes it is 😂
Truly incredible timing.
"I don't like lava because it kills you instantly" yes unlike the spikes, bear traps, or even a poorly placed witch doctor
In the LOTR movies they cut out the entire ending of the books. There's a whole nother arc where they go back to the Shire only to find Saruman there.
Never understood why they didn't milk the franchise for a fourth movie (☞ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)☞
@@thomegatherion924 It's okay they made up for it later by milking the franchise for 3 more movies with the hobbit :)
I honestly quite liked the ending story arc
That couldn't happen in the movies cuz Saruman died. In a deleted scene he gets stabbed by his lackey.
@@thomegatherion924 Oh god, don't give them ideas. We don't need the scouring of the shire stretched into a new trilogy
8:40 "You go to the jungle or you go to the blackmarket"
Welp seems like the choice is made for you. Also Children of the Forest cannot spawn on 2-1 I'm pretty sure
don't ever say my name in a video again
Dissapointed thought he was talking about a channel named indiemouse
If you like volcania that much why don't you marry it
I am so disappointed Baer, Ryan, and Malf all prefer jungle for some reason 😂
@@jabz1582 What do you mean? What other content is there aside from the cape? I read somewhere VH shows up again somewhere later but idk what for.
@@KevinAccetta[Spoiler alert] I got an alien compass from him inside some sort of jail or cell in the temple. I have no idea what that thing does...
NL's rant about how optimization is unnecessary in programming, made me acually giggle, especially considering how a minute ago he was talking about Teardown that would not even come close to running in realtime were it not for insane optimization effort his author put into it.
I got to thinking about the jetpack discussion in this game and have come to the conclusion that it's the new climbing gloves. In the first game, the climbing gloves gave you amazing mobility, but occasionally you'd grab when you didn't expect to and you'd die. Now people realize how essential the gloves are, but because jetpacks now explode that "it sometimes kills you" negative energy has been diverted to them. But here's the thing, they still give you AMAZING MOBILITY. I was swayed early by the negativity, but I'm pretty sure now it's awesome on balance and everyone should love it.
I think my favorite part about this one is that the post-mortem is just long enough that it delays the "next video" popup that would otherwise spoil the fact that your run was about to end. Would love if that was a common thing (or if the popup was disabled)!
Other than that, awesome show as always!
I like the end card, it's the biggest antagonist of the series
I personally find it hilarious. I play a little game : guess the death.
NL: jungle is good because you can buy items
also NL, with 50k money, having already finished with black market: I'd rather not buy spring shoes for no particular reason
Like brother, your justification is items and then you're like I don't like items.
Olmec: "u lucky i'm in class"
alegebra
That final "oh no!!!" was very Joseph Joestar lol
I think the whole jetpack vs Vlad's cape argument comes down to this: to really make it far in spelunky 2 you almost need a jet pack or vlad's cape (you can obvs beat the game without either but you would have to be insanely good) and v's cape, unlike the jetpack, is guaranteed to spawn on every run. I think jetpack is still better, which is why I go jungle whenever I find a jetpack in the mines. But otherwise I go volcana for that guaranteed great item, which the black market doesn't offer unless you get lucky and get a jetpack there. I think jungle should always spawn a big spider, because paste, imo, is the third most useful item in the game after jetpack and Vlad's cape
10:35 A lot of it is practice. I've being going Volcana almost exclusively, so it feels to me nice and safe and pleasant, and I think that Jungle is a hellhole full of instakill hazards. You went to jungle much more often, so you are used to it. To me Volcana has one and only one dangerous moment - getting down the chain, while in Jungle every step can kill me or take away a bunch of health.
Your decision might be right for you, but at the same time my decision may be right for me.
Edit: this is your daily reminder that there IS a coffin in Abzu - it's underwater
See, you're kind of right, but the glaring hole in your logic is that anyone can get used to the hazards on either path. So assuming you can get skilled enough to avoid them, then it just comes down to what you can get to improve your run on each path, which is objective. In Volcana, you can get Vlad's cape and some number of shops. I don't know exactly the shop generation algorithm, but let's assume you could see one every level and have to see one in at least one level. That's 1-4 shops plus the cape. Vs a guaranteed 6 shops plus a free bomb box plus a fairly common enemy that gives you free paste. Yes, there is Van Horsing's quest line too, and that has a couple genuinely good rewards later down the road, but the jungle provides such a better foundation to a run. That's not to say which is the "right" way to play because that really is a "to reach their own" scenario, it's subjective. But I think if we're arguing merits and not preferences, the jungle becomes objectively better.
@@joehemmann1156 Well we are arguing preferences and not merits. I did use "right for me vs right for you", which is clearly cannot be objective - when I play and want to win, it's a correct choice to go Volcana. When NL plays it's correct choice to go to Jungle.
@@joehemmann1156 you can make up for items lost by gambling with tusk in 4-1 to get 5 items for cheap. You also get guaranteed ropes, compass, spike boots from ice caves. Plus clone gun allows you to get 99 bombs and ropes from stars challenge on 7-1. So really the only items you care about getting are jump boots, paste, pitchers mitt, and climbing gloves, and you can still have pretty good success in the cosmic ocean without those.
The blood cape gives a bit of poison insurance, and if you want alien compass you need to go Volcana.
I personally find Volcana and Tide Pool, using ankh skip and clone gun strats, the most reliable for a 7-99 attempt
If you’re just looking for a sure fire way to beat Tiamat, black market is probably easier but beating Tiamat becomes trivial once you play a while. Basically I think jungle has a lower skill ceiling, but the better you get the more beneficial Volcana becomes.
NL: *constantly dies to jetpack explosions*
Also NL: "I dunno, man, Vlad's Cape just isn't worth it."
He's speaking in comparison to the black market which in the scheme of things, it really isn't
I can't remember a single time where NL died to a jetpack explosion. On this occasion he was already dead when the mine exploded, jetpack or no jetpack.
Some thoughts on the Volcana/jungle debate:
1) There is fire based damage even past neo-babylon, taking the jetpack potentially compromises the very late game of the run.
2) If you go black market you need to collect money or kill shopkeepers. If you can reliably do the latter it probably doesn't matter where you go to begin with. As for collecting money it's not an issue per say but you can play so much faster if you just forget about money and instead rob the first shop in 1-2, dodge the shopkeeper on 1-3 and get forgiven at the start of 1-4 (no money collecting required for a shop's worth of items at minimal risk. For most runs the haul you get from your first shop plus 1-2 other purchases will get you everything you could ever need ).
3) It's much easier to miss the black market than Dracula's castle. Van always spawns on 2-1 and you don't even really need him to kill dracula if you have a weapon or cook bombs. It's even possible to go to dracula's castle with no udjat eye at the price of about 8 bombs. Also, The jetpack or even the cape is also not guaranteed in the jungle, vlad's cape is a near guarantee. In my opinion Volcana is more consistent if you don't die to lava.
4) Volcana is filled with instant deaths and there appear(??) to be less kali altars (at the very least there are fewer enemies that are possible to offer as tribute) however the path to the exit tends to be more direct than in the jungle. At the end of the day if you're not concerned with money and you have a guaranteed crown+ vlad's cape waiting for you don't really need anything in the level. You want to be rushing to the exit and volcana is great for that.
5) Unfortunately paste is much harder to come by in Volcana. If you're rolling shotgun it's probably not the kiss of death but it's definitely a genuine reason to prefer jungle.
I agree with pretty much everything. Volcania is so much quicker to traverse. Sometimes you get an annoying layout with very narrow paths filled with lava, the gargoyles, and sometimes even the lava frog, but you can fix that with a bomb or two.
I find the amount or altars is pretty much the same, can't decide which ones I prefer though. Jungle altars can sometimes be hidden behind walls you need to bomb, but Volcania sometimes has altars with the exploding robots on them (and not to mention spawning below the drill sometimes).
" Van always spawns on 2-1 and you don't even really need him to kill dracula if you have a weapon or cook bombs." apparently you can also reliably make drac telefrag himself into the right side wall which gives you cape if you hit him in a specific spot, so that's also notable.
All in all Volcana is way more average value, while black market arguably has better upper bounds (and those upper bounds are inherently more risky). NL's problem is he imagines every black market being his dream black market, when realistically like 75% of the time it extremely isn't.
I do think Volcanada has more danger, though both have their unique risks, but yeah, more rewards on average too.
IMO paste is often not found in jungle too, the spiders show up like less than 30% of the time in my experience, and for shops, well, volcana has some too. That said olmec is easily whippable if you have the cape, even though NL's deathly afraid of doing it, and if you don't go duat, which is advisable regardless since it takes your cape away, and can't be ankh skipped, and is more annoying overall, that removes the other biggest need for stickies.
Of course paste is always nice, but less than mobility is IMO.
"That's gonna explode like a son of a gun"
Truuuue
This is the kind of high percentage Elvis Costello impression content I need.
I think Vlad’s cape is the way to go depending on what ending you’re going for. If you’re going Cosmic then Vlad’s cape is the way, definitely.
When this video was posted I was going thru the motions of food poisoning. Thank you egg for being the background noise for my misery.
I should note this is commented in a humorous manner
I too think of NL every time I go to the bathroom.
@@WWLinkMasterX 😳
A new tactic to employ is stealing from the shop, but not killing the shop keeper. You get forgiveness much quicker. In a shop where you want everything, use the rope trick to knock him out, steal everything including the shotgun, just don't kill him and run for your life
That 1-3 with the altar and the turkeys is one of the most painfully misplayed floors I've seen from Enelle, and that's saying something
I dunno, I'm loving sleep deprived NL. Makes me feel better about my terrible Spelunky skills : (
Northern alien purposely misplays to trick us into commenting
That 1-3 level with the sacrifice plays made me want to die
I just entered abzu and left immediately because I thought the exit door would take me up fml
The fact that vulcania and dschungel is so much debatet is a testament to the incredible thought and balance work which was put into the game.
The perfect example of how to provide a player with different options which are all viable but different enough to make the game exciting.
It seems that way until you get to the next choice, Tidal Pool or death
@@DoctorDoomsPvP Well cant argue against that
Really happy you found the new tech right at the beginning. LET'S GO!!
'That's going to explode' -Famous Last Words
NL I won't lie to you, the reason Volcana is even in the cards for me personally is that slappin' soundtrack.
Bad-sleep dad voice threw me there for a sec
I would say, if you don't have much gold (and dont want to aggro shopkeepers) go to volcana. If you have plenty of gold (and udjet eye), go to the jungle.
I don't think it's about which is better but instead which is more opportune for your current run.
Not gonna lie, that Olmec fight was pretty sick. Whip & dodge mechanics are pogged off the charts
NL if you're looking for a hired help to give to the tunnel lady, you can get one on 4-turtle right before the ice caves. it always spawns under the water at the bottom of the stage.
...well guess what? He's never gonna pog! He's already pogged there. He went pog.
Conventional wisdom is strongly tipping towards Volcana being the superior choice at this point. Vlad's Cape is simply that good.
You can watch a piece of NL's soul leave his body at the end of every Spelunky 2 video.
I like how the first time I hear the spelunky 2 is our you've already done 50 episodes of it
35:00 Yo do the glasses block squid ink? That's pog as hell
27:51 - "Boomerang! You *do* always come back!" :-D
Why did this weird ole egg take so long to just sacrifice the hired help? Feeling a little anti-pogged after missing that kappala
It is funny you don't have patience with the Omlec Fight. HOWEVER Great job.

"Why is sorting important?" An interesting question, that has interesting implications.
Tl;Dr. it is so F*ing faster to sort stuff rather than not that something, like a google search, that takes fractions of a second might take days were it done without beeing sorted.
The obvious answer is "because it makes looking for stuff faster", but that doesn't paint the whole picture.
In an data set that is unorganized the only way you can search is linearly, that is, looking at each individual value and seeing if it is the element you are looking for. We say that is a O(N) complexity task, that mean that as the number of entries increases so does the time to process in a linear way. 5000 entries takes 10 the time to process as 500 simple.
In an organized data set you can use it's structure to find the values much faster. Let's say our data set contains words, the optimal way you would look for a word would be: you get the entry at the mid point of your data set and compare to see if it is greater, lesser or equal to the desired value. If it is lesser you repeat this process in the first half of the data set and if greater in the second, until you find the value you are looking for. Using this method you will only search you will only search half, of half, of half... of half of all values. That is called an O(log_2 N) algorythm, it mean that the time to compute a task scales logarithmically with the data set size. A data set that has 256 values would only take 8 comparisons where 128 would take 7, only a difference of 1.
So, let's make a quick comparison. You have a data set with 2048 entries, how long would each method take to find an specific one? In an unorganized set it would be on average 1024 comparisons (half of all values) while in an organized set would be a meager 11 times. Simple math says that it is 100 times faster to use the second method! And as numbers get larger the difference of performances increases progressively faster.
Of course, even 1024 entries would go by in less than a second to a computer, but these numbers tend to be much much larger, (think the number of people that live in your city or how many books were ever written) so those values tend to increase. I would wait 11 seconds to find a specific book in Amazon's search engine, I wouldn't wait 1024.
So you sort set because it is much much faster to do so.
Hopefully, to those who got this far will have found it interesting or useful. If you haven't decided your career and found it interesting I would recommend computer science.
Thank you for a excellent explanation!
"the jetpack is bad because it expldoes"
well, it only explodes if you get hit, guess you're all just bad
Saying that the jetpack is bad because it explodes is like saying that Ipecac is bad because you can hit yourself with it.
There's nothing more Pog than sippin on some NL Spelunky with my breakfast burrito.
the hardest part is not checking the time left in the video when he says something in future tense
oh my god he's right I hate everything he said about sorting algorithms
I wish Volcana was the one with the Three Sisters, so there'd be a reason aside from a Cape. Plus, honestly, the Sisters could use an overhaul
Something like each one now being hidden behind a locked door (which makes a Skeleton Key more useful); Parsley gives a couple rope bundles, Parsnip gives a couple bomb bags or even a box, Parmesan gives a random item, each immediately when saving them. Saving all three might give you an extra perk on Olmec, whether just another rope/bag/box, or maybe even something like a Royal Jelly.
That way, the Black Market is more of a random selection of a TON of stuff. More risky, because you don't know if you're getting a shop with 3 Bomb Boxes and a Jetpack, or if you're getting at most a single bag and a few items you already have. Volcana would be a lot more "set" in what you're getting, rather than potential for high highs and low lows.
As is... You get a double jump and double blood? Alien Compass, I guess, but that's only if you go for the Temple, which barely anyone does at this point? Why would you skip a free bomb box, Black Market, getting to keep your Ankh, and the Clone Gun for that
Plot twist: NL becomes an Elvis impersonator

Black market is pretty high variance, but the highs can be amazing. Unlucky to hit it on floor 2-2 like NL did here before the moon challenge though, he could have easily gone into it with 80-90k if it was later on this run.

I hope Volcana vs Jungle causes the NLSS Civil War 2:Electric Eggadoo, and we have more amazing raps from B-SUPREME and IndieMau5
The idea behind 'min-maxing' regarding sorting algorithms is more about the time and space complexities and not so much the efficiency of said algorithms.
isn't efficiency the same thing as time/space complexity...? also I'm so confused how this discussion is relevant to this video?
Someone tell NL that 2-1 will never have the Black Market or any Children of the Forest
37:27 Classic NL head tilt
vlads cape is the way to go if you plan on going "cosmic".
Nl, if you really want to find a hired help in the turtle level there's a guaranteed coffin underwater
Nl says "the baby" so many times that I feel like I'm in a mandalorian episode
Or a Metroid Other M playthrough
I mean, lets be honest, almost every other item in the game sucks, and the ones that dont suck love to not appear in the black market or always appear in other shops.
So I would say Volcania is still better because it always offer you the chance to get a good item for free
Honestly I think if you've gotten a pack (hover/jet/power) or a nice pair of boots you should pick jungle. Fire explodes packs and boots protect from spiky ground. Otherwise yeah volcania for Vlad's cape.
And don't forget if you aren't killing the shopkeepers you only get 2-3 items on most runs, which means the treasure in vlads castle is expected to be on par BUT you also get access to every shop on volcania unlike the jungle where you can't buy from shops and afford everything in black market.
We're really all gonna call it 'Volcania', huh? Egg will never learn if you pander to him, and thus the world is changed by unreasonable men.
I feel like I'm missing something but you can easily get like 5+ items by the jungle on the average black market run and still afford the Hedjet cleanly
@@Northernlion imo its down to how you play the game, for me jungle is "harder" because it requires to go slow and check for traps / plan for triple doctor ambush, volcana you can go faster except for the drill part, and the enemies are way easier
I've yet to actually play Spelunky 2 yet but the difference between volcania and the forest seems to be that one is for beginners who need extra help and the other is for experts and who want more of a challenge and to unlock certain secrets

I think jungle is better if you don't have a lot of items. If you have blessed shops in the dwelling you might as well go for the cape.
NL. The black market is less good than you think because you get free compass and boots on the ice caves, free vlads cape, and so on.
You just never make it to there 😅
he wasn't wrong, lol
yea if you're using your sorting algs to put a piddly little 10,000 element array in the right order maybe the O(n) doesn't matter if it's 0.054ms or 0.032ms but suddenly you're running your sorting alg for giant databases of like millions upon millions of entries and that O(n) climbs up to like 10 minutes and then great grandma sally can't get into her bank account or some shit
NL hired hand in abzu is underwater
I think Volcana and Vlad's Cape are novel and that plays a big part in people wanting to go there and use it.
that 1-1 tho
My Volcana/Vlad runs, generally speaking, are way more successful than my Jungle/Black Market runs. That's just me. And I totally understand if someone else is completely different and has better success with a jet pack. It's all a matter of personal preference and not worth debating about endlessly.
Children of the forest appear from 2-2
At 20:31 did he just say "this is not big chungus" in a Duke Nukem voice?
That Olmec fight was so infuriating since it would be 10 times easier to just whip it. Also does he not realise that standing under him is completly safe? Man that was painful to watch
At least you can see every trap in volcana clearly. I despise the spike traps and bear traps. Bear traps are one of the worst things about spelunky 2
yeah but now you can see them with the gold nugget bait. They're not that hard once you get used to them, you just have to be a little more conscious of your surroundings. Except in dark levels. Bear traps in dark levels can screw right off
The game forces you to be paranoid and not rush through. Bear traps are perfect for this and yeah, with the bait they're more visible now, so you just gotta keep you eyes out for them. Magma quickly falling on your head outta nowhere though, that's rough...
reaction time of a literal stone. ive been watching you since binding of isaac episode 1 and you are still making me pull out my hairs bro.
