back in the late 80s i spent a lot of time at my brother-in-law's garage and and guy that worked in an engine rebuild shop said that the 351 Cleveland was his favorite engine to work on because of its potential at the time, this vid shows why. yes todays engines with blowers etc may make more power but for a street machine this would be fun just for cruising even if a honda would kick your butt, lol
It's amazing to me how many HP you can "chase down" with just timing and jetting changes, assuming you were not off in the weeds to begin with, which obviously you weren't. You do some very nice engine builds, BTW.
That is not a boss 351...the boss is a Cleveland, this is a Windsor motor running inline valves...all boss motors use a canted valve 335 series or 385 series based head design. Make a track boss Cleveland stroker with CHI heads and watch it crush the Windsor

Impressive numbers, but I just can't get excited seeing someone pull out a modern fuel injected engine and replacing it with an antiquated carb setup. If this was a 70s muscle car, sure. But not on a late 90s car.
He mentioned "one small tinning change", but he never mentioned if it was more or less. I've watched 17 minutes and couldn't know what came up with the results.
If you look on the timing mark for the final adjustment, I think he went smaller jet and then it bounced around 33-35 degrees timing for 610hp, so I'd say around 34 degrees was the sweet spot
pegglegg123 They tried 35 before with low power, I don’t think 35 would bring the power up after leaner the jets. 32 or 33 makes more sense, but it a shame they didn’t mentioned. I was about to subscribe the channel, but I was disappointed.
Anyone else notice they did not use Boss (Cleveland) style heads, rather Windsor heads. Was really surprised by that as Boss heads flow much better. Still a great build with an amazing block!!
This is exactly what I was going to comment about. Like why are you using straight valve heads on a Cleveland?! But the block isn't the OG 351 Boss from 1971, it's a Windsor block. Ford Racing M-6010-B35192BB Boss Engine Block

back in the late 80s i spent a lot of time at my brother-in-law's garage and and guy that worked in an engine rebuild shop said that the 351 Cleveland was his favorite engine to work on because of its potential at the time, this vid shows why. yes todays engines with blowers etc may make more power but for a street machine this would be fun just for cruising even if a honda would kick your butt, lol
Yeah that's all good and everything but this engine they built is not a Cleveland.
16:45.. awkward 'non-high 5' moment.. :)
10:1 compression 93 friendly 600+hp 7.0L nice!
It's amazing to me how many HP you can "chase down" with just timing and jetting changes, assuming you were not off in the weeds to begin with, which obviously you weren't. You do some very nice engine builds, BTW.

what is it with mechanics and Ford timing? As a mechanic of 12 years I learned really quickly how to set timing before engine start up.

That is not a boss 351...the boss is a Cleveland, this is a Windsor motor running inline valves...all boss motors use a canted valve 335 series or 385 series based head design.
Make a track boss Cleveland stroker with CHI heads and watch it crush the Windsor
Thank you. Canted valves is what made a Boss the Boss.
This is a strong Ford, not a Boss.
@@johntempest267 its fords boss 351 block, maybe try looking it up before flapping. That is what ford named it.
@@Oldsoldiersays
If putting Boss heads on a Windsor makes it a Boss (302), then putting Windsor heads on a Cleveland makes it a Windsor.
And I got your flapper right here!
@@johntempest267 dude quit arguing with people. The block is called a boss 351 or u can get a boss 302 block. Look it up. Its fords aftermarket block. There around $1800 to $2100 for them.
@@johntempest267 You obviously are easily triggered. Ford's version of an LSX block. They call it a boss block. No one thinks its an actual old school boss engine. Welcome John and thank you for your service.
Wish you guys would do more builds with less Edelbroke components!
For real..where's the high pro stock parts some of them are great stuff. Would like to see more of the lesser known company's product. See how they hold up

This is where I am.
American muscle! It's addictive.
I can't believe that with fast-burn type heads they thought more advance would bump power.....they finally figured it out. What was the final timing change? More timing or less?
Looks like 31 degrees , in my experience SBF usually do not like a ton of timing . A SBC likes alot though like 36 up to 40.
@@boostedsaleen6146 Thanks.....was very curious as I've dinked with SBF's all my life and I was wondering what they were up to.
@@tomnekuda3818 I've built a bunch of small block and big block fords my self every thing from a 302 to stroker windsors and 586 series engines I definitely bleed blue .
@@boostedsaleen6146 Sounds like me....have built 460's, some stroked, for towing and some for street. Not so many SBF's but that's what I'm driving now....a warmed up 302. The 385 series heads are miserable in the exhaust area as they were compromised to fit between shock towers on Mustangs.....best always to save nickels and dimes to buy good flowing aluminum heads. I have ported/Devcon-F'ed stock heads to increase/boost flow in exhausts until I was blue in the face. Even following Ford templates for porting, it remained the biggest weakness in the 460+. Best to build torque in 460's and rpm in SBF.....wind 'em up until only dogs can hear them! Ha. 351W is particularly good engine for torque and HP. Keep the Ford Faith. Tom

Explaining how to degree a cam was excellent!
I'd love to see some E85 and higher compression engines. 13:1 anyone?
High Performance Academy just interviewed a guy saying they were making engines with a CR of 14:1 and weren't knock limited on E85. IIRC it was with a Hayabusa head. No idea on the cam specs or if the claim was static or dynamic, pretty impressive either way though.
I would like to see them with a 2JZ inline 6 and get at least a thousand horsepower
13:1 Isnt as crazy as it used to be...even Nissans have up to 14:1 in their VC turbo engines
See if they can't get into diesel territory... The Mazda skyactive 5 cyl. Make 14:1.. so with enough$$$ it can happen

Yes, they made a kit to convert a Focus into a sort of mini fox body.

Once again Amish Mike shows off his tuning prowess
Dave Nelson, he's not amish if he's building engines, and I wonder what that marine think of people who are conscientious objectors, Amish won't even grow a mustache because they believe it's something people in the military grow, and they don't want to be associated with them.

But different...?
What a beautiful engine, wow 610 HP without a turbo or supercharger. Soooo smooth!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Impressive numbers, but I just can't get excited seeing someone pull out a modern fuel injected engine and replacing it with an antiquated carb setup. If this was a 70s muscle car, sure. But not on a late 90s car.

Agreed. A blown coyote and manual trans out of a wrecked GT500 would have been cool. Just think how many wrecked GT500s must be out there.
That engine is a monster!!
I had a Boss 351 Stang and it had canted valves your heads dont those look like windsor heads
Exactly
Hey Jon.....thanks for your service and now we need to build you a ride!
He mentioned "one small tinning change", but he never mentioned if it was more or less. I've watched 17 minutes and couldn't know what came up with the results.
Pretty sure they settled at 29 degrees BTDC.
@@m.pietro9087 its was mainly about 33 so close to sweet spot, but they should have said it. But just looking at it you can tell so not needed
