    Pat is building this young man into a monster engine builder, solid bro for being a mentor.

      Dude has the best job ever. Can you imagine getting paid to build engines everyday? Sweetest gig ever. Tried my best to talk my dad into going into business with me building kit cars and selling them but he wouldn't do it because it's too "hot" where I live and moving to his local wasn't feasible. Oh well wasn't meant to be.

      @@brandonlittle6444 Troll much or do you enjoy pointing out inane information. Second how do you know I wasn't talking about Pat? Obviously they are people, AI hasn't gotten that good yet, and obviously he has a name. I could almost understand your reply if I was saying something rude or negative about someone who had passed away but in this context it is truly pointless.

    The stock iron heads have a very convoluted exhaust port that turns down sharply at the exit to clear the fenderwells of many of the Ford cars that were designed back in the day. When Jon Kasse designed the very first Cobra Jet heads for the 460 back in 1991 this was his main object to rectify. He redesigned the port to flow much better and still fit the cars. The intake was changed slightly also. These first heads were worth 100 horsepower over the stock iron heads with no other changes to the engine. He later did a refresh on the heads to improve the intake side. These heads were sold through your local Ford dealer with Ford part numbers for many years. The reason I am stating all this is to show how much improvement was in just the heads so your project will show this as well. The turbo, if reinstalled would show a dramatic improvement as well. The big Ford with a good set of heads is not a bad engine.

    Every pull was amazing for the characteristics that each one showed! This was a torque monster peaking and holding near peak starting at 3,700ish to the mild falloff around 5,000 RPM! Surprised by the relatively flat and wide peak HP curve lasting for 1,000 RPM starting at 5,000-6,000! The sweet spot for the setup at that time. It hit close to peak and held it near peak for 1,000 RPM!
    As a strip car in a fairly light chassis, this would start to plant you in the seat around 3,000 RPM and want to rip your face off all the way to 6,000RPM...
    Wide torque curve, modest torque fall off, wide flat HP curve near peak HP for 1,000 RPM on every, single pull! That is surprising!

    My concern with these fuel injection kits is (electronic) part failure. These are not the EFI systems on mass produced vehicles- made to have very low failure rates. Heard some horror stories of people being stuck somewhere for a long time waiting on replacement parts of something in the EFI system fails (because none of it is at the local auto parts store). That was never an issue with carbs.. well, typically. I do like the convenience and performance/economy they offer. But the "either they work or you are stuck at a motel waiting on parts during your trip" nature is a concern.

    an oil pan evac is a good system for racing, but i prefer a vacuum balance system for the street. that is a 5/8 hose or tube from a baffle on the valve cover directly to the inside of the air cleaner. that balances the crankcase pressure with the intake stroke of the valve timing event to neutralize the difference in pressure. that helps the piston rings to seal and do their job. since the crankcase has a few pounds of pressure, isn't that actually adding a couple pounds of boost into the intake? yes it is.

    Nice build there gents. But I have to say I would have kept the turbo. Just for the fact it's making so much torque that way. I know this the setup the "customer" wanted but 770 ft/lb of torque is no joke , now granted all that at 3500rpm is probably pushing the luck with the rest of the drivetrain .
    I would have split the difference myself , I would go with 9:1 comp with the alloy heads with twin turbos and log manifolds to get around the packaging concern . Run the EFI and the turbos and you could have had 700hp and 750ft/lbs on a curve from 3000 to 6000. That would have been a proper monster with low noise and nice manners on pump gas or E85.

    Kind of figured 32ish would have been about it on timing being such a big bore long stroke as most aluminum headed SBC's I've done stop at about 36 at around 9.5ish CR. Maybe that huge freaking cam duration on the exhaust and setting it at 105.5 degrees played a part in it though?

    They say that the exhaust port on a late eighties Ford 460 flows about the same as the one on the 5.0 Mustang. I think they max out around 110 cfm. No wonder the later built 460 can’t get out of its own way.

    Decent build but with the aftermarket heads it should be doing better than that. With stock heads that weren't even ported out ut just given a good valve job a 460 is capable of putting out over 500 HP.

      @@user-tu1ee6dc5f I watched. I am talking normally aspirated 460's were putting out over 500 HP using unreported stock heads over 20 years ago and with porting they can be pushed to equal or even exceed the output of the test engine in the video.

    What I love about the 460 architecture is the huge bore and relatively small stroke, generally I used to think big block meant long strong or a square bore/stroke ratio, so does that mean a 460 is meant to rev?

    • @CSMSteel7
      @CSMSteel7 5 місяців тому

      It would seem that way, but if I remember correctly they stroked and bored a 429 (385 series) to 460 mainly for the claim to fame of sheer cubic inches. Had to compete with other land yachts that had 500’s and 455’s. Ford advertised it as low rpm torque, but hey, marketing ya know.

      @@CSMSteel7the 460 is a 429 with a longer stroke. The Ford 400 has a longer stroke than a 460, a 393w has the same stroke as a 460. The Cadillac 500 has the longest stroke of the common classic Big Blocks 4.3" the Olds is close at 4.25", the 429/460 are very similar to the Mopar 400/440 with big bore and shorter stroke except the Mopars have a shorter stroke. An approach of "lets see what happens if we put really expensive parts in." is interesting but not useful.
