Doing an Alignment on my Tesla with Construction Lasers .. lol

  • The Ball joint came loose on my Tesla Model S since service appointments are so far away, I had to use construction lasers to bring my car back into alignment, it came out almost perfect as you can see in the video.
I align the lasers with all four hubs on the car completely parallel and then measure the front and rear of each rim to determine the alignment.
believe it or not this is a pretty accurate way to do the alignment if you don't have access to an alignment machine.
you can even do the math to determine the Distance per degree with this formula: C=πd,
    in my case I have 21"/533.4mm Wheels. 533.4mm * 3.14 = 1674.8mm (circumference) ÷ 360 (degrees) = 4.65mm per degree. that's it!.
so we now know when measuring each degree is 4.65 mm.
hope this helped you or at least was entertaining.

Dealers make mistakes. It happens. It's a human using a tool likely to make a mistake at some point. Not cool on such a safety related feature though. Love your channels and your work. Always a good day when you upload. Thank you.

True, studies have been done and if I remember correctly, 98% of mechanical failures are caused by human error.

Even if a castle nut won't work becasue the offset is to fine, put a damn clip on it so the nut can't get off.

PROBABLY why auto manufacturers havs been using crenellated nuts on suspension parts since, well, forever.

That tapered seat in the knuckle may have oblong wear now. It might come loose again. Then again, you could be alright if you caught this quick enough. Tesla should make things right.

I thought of that, but issue is with used cars you have no idea what happened before you.

It should pull to the right ever so slightly as the camber of the road should take the car away from the median and into the ‘safer’ area to the side of the road where you won’t have a head on collision if you are unconscious 👍🏼
In countries that drive on the left it should go slightly left.

You can can determine the angle of toe in by running a compass app on your phone, placing the edge of the phone along the laser line and reading the heading (this is your base angle). Next, place a straight edge along the outside of the wheel (against the rim, not the tire) then place the edge of the phone against the outside of the straight edge and read the heading. The difference between the headings is the tow in angle.

@@volvo09 I asked the genius bar nuts about the resolution to see if I could make a gun sight out of an iphone. Would make a nice way to shoot around corners without exposing yourself much, just the trigger finger. LOL
They had no idea. Found out the only way to install the software would be to give it to apple so I could download it to the phone after paying them for the privilege of compiling it.

does the self driving correct for the alignment till the wheel falls off like the space shuttle did?
Or will it say wheel alignment problem, get fixed, auto pilot disabled.

Looks like the previous owner gave this car a bit of exercise. You did a good job. Still them parts must sit still while brought to the specified torque. Else pay for a replacement. This car has grunt and such parts do wear!
