The Mk XIVc is probably my favorite. It maintains fluid maneuverability because of its lighter airframe than the XIVe that eventually went into production, but also packs the famed Griffon engine, making it wildly more flexible than its other Griffon counterparts (except in a dive of course). In-game, it retains a low enough BR that it doesn't have to get dunked on by jets.
Spitfire is my absolute favorite plane family. I love every single one variant, but if I had to choose some favorites, I'd say: - IIb for its excellent performance and firepower compared to competitors. In proper hands it can obliterate enemy team. - Vc/trop because of its firepower allowing it to destroy any enemy in half a second and filters allowing it to operate in Africa without issues. - all LF IX variants, but especially Plagis premium - thanks to older armament of 4 7,7s and 2 20mms it's a bit lighter and more maneuverable than other variants with .50cals and MG ammo lasts for longer, so you can effectively destroy more planes than with default 2 .50cals and 2 20mms, even tho it's theoretically weaker. - XVI for its cool cut wing look (let's be real, all Spitfires look awesome, but this one is just dope). - 24 for its powerful engine and decent CAS capabilities, allowing it to strike any target (air or ground) fast and suddenly and get away quick from AA fire. In short, there's Spitfire for everyone in this game and on every tier there's at least one exceptional variant, which excels in any situation. Of course, these planes are easy to fly, but that doesn't mean any dumbass can instantly get 10 kills without thinking. But if someone can think while flying, Spitfire rewards it more than most planes in game.
The mk XVI and mk IX are visually identical, the only real differences were the Packard Merlin in the XVI and and sometimes (but not always) wing armament. They were built side by side and had the same type number (Supermarine type 631). Unfortunately there are ( I think) only 2 mk IX bubble canopy airframes in existence , and they are in museums, so when we see a flying mk IX type airframe with a bubble canopy we know it is a mk XVI - not by how it looks visually, but by the fact that the only surviving flying airframes of this type are mk XVIs. Like you said though, they do look cool!
I’m partial to the Mark IX. The way it turns combined with its perfect feeling armament makes it my most effective plane. If I want plenty of easy kills, all I gotta do is look to the Mk IX and go to town
Merlin spitfire magic number. Set radiator to 100% until climb is finished then go for 45% 117% mixture bellow 1k, 107%-103% mixture bellow 2k, 97% mixture bellow 3k, 87% mixture bellow 4k, 77% above 4500m. Prop pitch: 85% for speed and energy fighting. 100% for turn and climb. Climb at 26 degree at 200kph and u will out climb anything in a MK VC up to 3400m (10000ft) Best way to force people to fight you if you didn't manage to outclimb them is to let them chase you then pull them down bellow 3k. Roll and zig zag until they outdive you. Once that happen its pretty easy to adjust for the final killing blow. Beside that ALWAYS check your mixture/alt set, even in a fight. Spitfire lose a lot of performance because gaijin auto pilot on mouse aim set their mixture to 70 and prop pitch 60. With manual engine control you can outclimb and out turn anything in a dime. Last note for max ammo conservation+damage its good practice to only fire when you can see the enemy plane colour without zoom. Turn off your range indicator as that rule means smaller planes take closer distance to see colour.
For me the XIVe is the perfect mixture of both worlds. It's Griffon Spitfire that retains good manuverability, without much sacrifice, other than climb rate, which is already abysmal enough that it doesn't really matter. It flies well, it's shots hurt, that's enough for it to be a good plane, it also doesn't suffer from being uptiered to 7.0 and up, having to face jets that not even other jets can catch up to (F-84B nerf pls)
