When this cabinet came out in 1991, Konami was in their stride. There was nothing they did that failed. TMNT, X-Men, the Simpsons, etc. Thank you for yet another video kind sir...
Cormano was always my favorite character because of his how he hid his guns under his poncho. I played this game every weekend at Aladdin's Castle. The 90s were awesome!
This game is an arcade masterpiece. Growing up in Western Canada, this game was *everywhere.* I remember kids would fight over who got to play as Cormano- he was the most popular and favorite character by far. There is a rare spinoff of this game called Mystic Warriors, which features ninjas instead of cowboys. Awesome review, Patman!
Konami really did like the cowboy motif at that time, didn't they? Lethal Enforcers 2 was also released around that time, and there's also Wild West Cow-Boys of Moo Mesa, which is regarded as the spiritual sequel to Sunset Riders.
Actually, there's another spiritual successor to Sunset Riders besides Wild West Cow-Boys of Moo Mesa: Mystic Warriors, which also shares the same visual presentation and has a cameo of Sunset Riders in one of the stages...
Well, I could understand No. 1, but I think Moo Mesa was Konami doing more with the license they had from Surge, just as they had with the successful Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Omg are you kidding me?! My favorite game by my favorite dude? On a Saturday? After getting on UA-cam after a nice wake and bake? Today is gonna be incredible
Somehow managed to never see this game in the arcades back when it was around... Must have been too busy dropping all my quarters into Final Fight and WWF Superstars. Love the video though!
I love everything about this game, from the opening scene and music to the game play and challenging bosses. Cormano was my favorite “Rider”. I rented a Sega Genesis and this cartridge from Blockbuster when it first came out. It was one of the first games I bought for both the Genesis and SNES.
YES!! I been waiting for this one! Sunset Riders was one of my favorite arcade games and holy trilogy of arcades game I love running into in my childhood (TMNT, The Simpsons and this). I still vividly remember the day I came across it, I saw the cabinet and thought it would be a slow game due to using cowboys and enemies would come at you high noon style, my dad gave me a coin and I inserted it and had my mind blow at the intense gameplay and colorful characters! I never looked at Westerns the same again!! All the action of my dad's movies he enjoyed watching I got to live with this game and that fact that I live in Texas just brought this game to my mind constantly when traveling to historic places. Was lucky to find the Snes cartridge at a thrift store for cheap and recently got emulator to play it constantly on my phone. Never get tired of it and a classic for me and wish more people talked about, it's a forgotten classic!
Possibly the worse version out there, like Toki, it's nothing like the arcade version we loved. The Super Nintendo version is whre its at for home consoles.
The Mega Drive/Genesis version is far from arcade accurate, but it's by no means a bad game. The music is well done and the graphics are adequate. The game plays well, and that's what counts.
These are really amazing videos. Really!! Have you ever thought about doing “Wild West Cowboys of Moo Mesa” arcade game? I would love to see your rendition of that.
I love playing this game...first played it on MAME in 2006, then for many years, I yearned to play an actual Sunset Riders arcade game in person. Eventually that moment came in 2018 when the Strong Museum of Play got a Sunset Riders 4 Player cabinet in their eGameRevolution. When COVID-19 kept me from doing the things I enjoy doing, I am thankful Arcade Archives put Sunset Riders for Nintendo Switch and PS4, me getting the former port so I can play it on the go. :) Cormano is my main, and will always be.
I fed lots of tokens into this game at Aladdin's Castle back in the day. It's incredible to think that was nearly 30 years ago. It's so obvious now that the music was inspired by TMNT. I'm definitely going to pick this up on PS4.
You certainly did your research hard for this one to find out that Konami originally developed Frogger. KLOV has it plastered all over that it is created by Sega/Gremlin but in tiny print near the bottom, it does say, "originally developed by Konami". The fans of Track and Field might feel the same way since Konami licensed this to Centuri for USA distribution. Yes, I agree, Konami churned out many good beat-em-ups around that time including The Simpsons and X-Men. Actually Konami also did a wild western beat-em-up even earlier than this called Iron Horse from 1986. Your hero is in the back of a train and is trying to reach the engine in the front, but he's thwarted by bandits along the way.
Your videos are AWESOME, Patman! I was born in 76, so i've played or at least seen (in arcades) almost every game you've covered. Keep up the great work ,and long live retro gaming!
Man such memories ... started as kid playing this in the arcade and falling in love . Had look for many years to find this game in the 90s for the snes . Found it and loved it again .. what a time ... thanks for bringing back the memories once again

Pat you are the man. My mother bought me this game at Kay bee toys for the Super Nintendo. It was on the clearance rack. I had no idea what to expect from Sunset Riders. It quickly became one of me and my friends favorites. Thanks for the great videos brother. God bless you Pat. PS. Always pick Bob or Carmano. The shotguns really help you out.
I absolutely love this game. Has my favorite attract sequence of all time (I often just leave it running on my cab for "ambiance"). Another super video. Thanks very very much :) !
Thank you for doing a review of this one, I saw the title card, and immediately I had flashbacks of my childhood, playing this on the Sega Genesis. It was super fun, as I remember many weekends having rented this as my local video store.
Oh my my, how I have been wanting a video on this game soooo bad! This was an amazing game, it felt ahead of its time. Thanks for your hard work, and all the great videos!
Yee-haw! Sunsetriders benefitted from ports to genesis and SNES but mystic warriora and cowboys of moo mesa remain arcade exclusive. I hope you cover them someday.
Have this game for my Mega Drive and have loved it since I was a kid. I didn't know how pared back the Mega Drive/Genesis port was until many years later so I didn't know I was missing anything and still love how it plays. A warning to fellow collectors, Sunset Riders is VERY expensive nowadays and both the Mega Drive and SNES ports sell for crazy money. Excellent video Pat, keep up the great work. 🙂
Love yours Docs Patman, they always bring back fond memories. For me all the games you pick were from the golden age of gaming, you should do an episode about your favourite era of gaming and which games you were most fond of. I think from the birth of the Commodore 64 up until the PS2/Xbox 360 were the definitive years for gaming where by anybody could attempt to make their own game, independent developers were aplenty and creativity and originality were in surplus, sadly by the time the PS3 and Xbox 1 came the greed of Sony and Microsoft and their speedy release of ever more powerful hardware meant that independent developers couldn't afford or even keep pace with the giant companies leading to ever decreasing choices and originality in the market place. I'm so glad I was part of the original nerd collective when gaming was fun and exciting and also brought a lot of different people together in friendship (unlike the GTA V's and Call of duties communities which are just down right hostile). So thanks for keeping the golden age alive and bringing a smile to all true gamers faces. p.s the Amiga was my greatest computer of all time.
Thank you for the nice words. The Amiga was my favorite computer right next to the Commodore 64. The 64 to me has the edge just because of the vast amount of software that was available for it. I absolutely loved my Amiga though, the graphics the sounds it was just an amazing piece of hardware. I've been playing arcade games since the 70s so I really don't have a favorite era. It's all really good from the late 70s until the early 2000's I would say. How about you?
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries 100% agree with you, early 80's (C64, Spectrum ZX) up until early 2000 (PS2, Xbox One). I probably learned to type before I could write thanks to the Commodore lol.
