This was probably my best game in the arcades. I "finished" the game on one quarter a few times. After you get through it, it starts over with a higher difficulty. I could do about 45 minutes on a single quarter. I love this game.
I would say "video or it never happened".
However, people were just that good at games back In the day and that's pretty awesome.
So I jest in the opener.
Some games just nail what they are after in presentation. This was when Capcom was on a roll in the arcades, and this one was another great release.
I love this game! Played so much on NES.
That soundtrack was on point. Also this game alone made the nes max worth buying.
Great video. This was one of the hardest games I completed. The arcade version didnt fuck around. For me, difficulty wise, Ghost N Goblins arcade took me around 11 hours to complete both required loops and this game took me around 25 hours. I never came across any brick walls in GNG but this game had a few bosses that I couldnt put a dent in for many hours. Considering its only a 30 minute game and has unlimited continues it was surprisingly dense.
One of my favorite Games especially NES music and still Red Dead Redemption to this day. Thanks Pat, One Coin One Man...
"The TV Western in question was GUNSMOKE."
**surprised Pikachu face**
I remember hearing about this game when I was little and thinking it was a licensed affair based on the TV show of the same name.
I got my first job in 1986 at the age of 15 working as a telemarketer (crap job I know but the money was great at the time). It was in an office building located next to the Greyhound Bus station in my hometown. They had a Gun.Smoke cabinet in the bus station that I would go play on my breaks. The NES version also took up a fair amount of the Summer of '88 for me. I love this game and still play it sometimes on my favourite emulator. As of 2023 I still have not finished it. Great video, PatmanQC!
Love the opening screen upgrade Patman! Another great episode as well! Rock on my good man!!!
Thanks, you were the first one to mention it so kudos :-) thanks
What a coincidence! I have been listening to the old radio Gunsmoke shows on sirius xm and I remember playing this game as well. Thanks for sharing the history on this!
Absolutely. I've always liked westerns but never got into the TV show of Gunsmoke until about a year ago. Now it's one of my favorites, although I much preferred the early episodes with Chester that featured more of Marshall Dillon.
A childhood friend of mine had the Amstrad version and I thought it was the greatest game Ever and those Popcorn sound effects on the Spectrum..😄😄
Another great video my friend on one of my top 10 arcade games Ever.
This was one of the first games I played when I was 5, with my then 17 year-old cousin. He died 6 years ago, but I will always be grateful as he showed me many of the greats from the NES, including Punch Out, Legend of Zelda 1 and 2, Double Dragon, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, etc.
The thing I remember most about this game is my arcade put it right by the window, so there was always an annoying glare that got in the way, and you felt extra hot playing it cuz the sun would bake u thru the window.
This is one of gaming's true OG run n' gun games, and was one of my favorites from the period. I always loved the design of this game, as the western theme was just something that you never saw done well at the time. While Patman puts this in a category with Ghost n Goblins as far as difficulty goes, I would say this game is much harder. I've finished most versions of the G&G series, but Gunsmoke is on another level of hard AF. LOL
I concur, I spent too many summers at the arcades during my youth getting good at this game. Took me years & loads of 10p's to finally complete this game & is my proudest gaming achievement to this day; close 2nd is finishing Alienation on hardcore mode on PS4.
I have always loved, loved, loved this game & enjoyed watching this upload, thanks for this.
An interesting piece of history from CAPCOM. I met this title thanks to the CAPCOM Generations Vol. 4 compilation on the original PlayStation. Because I grew up with that home console with other CAPCOM titles like Mega Man X5, Resident Evil 3, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, among others.
On the NES, you could put in a code to make the cowboy shoot the direction you were facing. Turns out, the old control scheme was superior and made you want to switch back instantly.
This will always be one of my favorite Capcom shmups. It had great music, neat controls with the five-way shooting plus the left+right spread shot I always forgot to use, and was just doggone hard as nails. The NES version is fantastic, too. Even the weird stylising of its name as "Gun.Smoke" seemed oddly cool to me. Gotta say, the edits for the German version are pretty darned cool -- especially the 7th boss, Goldsmith, pulling a _Westworld_ by exposing the robot insides of his face.
Gun.Smoke was the reason I bought an NES Advantage joystick for my system! My thumbs were so blistered!
It's Always Classic for this Western Styled shooter game brought to you by Capcom..Gun.Smoke I'm happy that they put the dot between "Gun" and "Smoke" to avoid confusions with the long running television series that is "Gunsmoke"..My Best Wishes to you Mr. Patman for an excellent and most wonderful arcade history..I'm always here to watch, relax and learn more about every history of arcade games
One correction about the NES version wanted posters. Some of the shopkeepers on the stages also sell the wanted poster, so you dont have always just find it in the stage.
I said that in the video. I said if you have the cash to flash could always purchase them from the shopkeepers
Let's gooo! You always pick the best games from hidden gems to classics such as this! Thats why I love your channel so much!
I'm glad I could scratch that nostalgic itch for you :-) glad you enjoyed the content so much
What is it with morons always going "let's goooo" on a video? must be some sub 80 iq
What is it with people going "let's go" at everything nowadays like a bunch of demented idiots?!
Ha, "Steer" clear of the Bull. ;) Also adding The Gun on PS2, as well as Sunset Riders too. This game, Gunsmoke, was very challenging. Commando was a lot of fun and easier to handle IMO vs the 3 buttons here. That's something about his hand breaking and using a red pen to draw. 10 stages, but I struggle to get past the first 2. Nice going, Patman!
The fact that "Red Dead" would never have existened without "Gun.Smoke" is another reason why I'm proud to say I grew up with this 1985 classic. I like to believe that the events of "Gun.Smoke" are canon to the lore of "RDR".
I love this game. It was in my local arcade in the U.K. back in the eighties. That was the only place I ever came across it so I don’t think it was very common. I actually prefer Gun.Smoke to Commando which I came across in many more locations. Through the magic of modern technology I often play both titles on my MiSTer FPGA. Thanks for featuring one of my favourite titles. Your content is always informative and entertaining !
I vaguely remember playing the arcade a few times but I flat wore the NES version out. I still play it from time to time.
There are times in this game and in Commando where I think it would actually be easier to dodge raindrops in a thunderstorm.
Played this on Capcom classics.
Funfact there's a demo screen which
Reinacts the intro from the show.
It shows up once in a blue moon.
It shows a cowboy shooting another
Cowboy then walking off.
"So technically, this game is called Gun... Smoke."
You are a legend, another great video. Appreciate your work!
Awesome as always !!!! So much research , knowledge and detail . #1 channel on UA-cam !!!!
Hadn’t realized “Red Dead Revolver” was the “spiritual sequel” to “Gun.Smoke” but it’s good that Billy Bob got new life and legs for the next generation of consoles.
Good to see Gunsmoke kind of got a licensed game. Interesting that this gameplay ended up being incorporated into Back to the Future Part III for Amiga.
Ahhhhh not played this for years. Thanks for the nudge and your usual quality deep dive. Respect.
Thanks, Patman! This is a game I’ve been looking forward to you covering for a long time! My local pizza place had the arcade version in the late 80s, although instead of a full standup cabinet they had it in a mini tabletop console at the bar. Oddly enough, the tabletop didn’t have the 3 buttons, it had one fire button and you aimed your shots 10, 12, or 2 o’clock with the joystick. So I never knew about those fancy firing angles you could do by pressing two buttons together until I played it on MAME years later. Anyway, I never got past stage 3 in the arcade but since I loved it anyway I asked for and got the NES version for Christmas in 1988. Eventually managed to beat it too, which I was very proud of. It was probably one of the hardest games that I ever owned.
i never played this in the arcade, but now have it multiple times on various platforms, Arcade1up, Atgames Legends cabinet running coin ops X, 60-1 jamma in cabinet, nintendo switch, capcom greatest hits compilations, and pandora 11 s console. i find it very hard, but still like it and play it from time to time. thanks for the show!
I remember playing the arcade version at a local gas station a lot when I was a kid, and mom getting the NES version as a birthday present for dad because he liked westerns in either 90 or 91. (I remember either being six years old at the time or being about to turn six years old at the time.)
One of my all time favorite happy little NES games. Thank you for giving this one some attention and for everything you do.
One of my all time favorites. This was a great game and even better on the old NES. Thank you
Still have my NES cartridge since childhood. The Indian Village level VGM still to me my favorite soundtrack which has that Bionic Commando vibe to it. Excellent video as usual Patman.
My favorite arcade game ever. Pieced together a cabinet with all the artwork. Even custom bezel art. It looks and plays great. I have the us set 2 pcb. Which means wolf chief in round 3 and ninja in round 6. My high score is 2,042,100. Great game. Great review patman!
Before the Survive games,There's Western adventures😁Cool Video👍👍👍
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries this game have Horse ride, before Zelda Ocarina
The NES version is one of my favorite shooters of all time.
Fun seeing Gun Fight at the beginning of the video. You reminded me that I need to win the lottery and pick up a Bally Astrocade, which had Gun Fight as a built in game.
Thanks for another great video! I remember grinding away at this game on the NES and it felt amazing to finally beat it. Not surprised to hear about the music's popularity as I was a huge fan myself.
I used to play this game at the arcades, then at home!
😍 oh, so many great memories, cheers from Guatemala! 🇬🇹👍
Excellent!!! I always love your classic game reviews. I look forward to them. Has anyone ever heard of Jack The Giant Killer? It's obscure, but I loved it back in the day.
Another great video! Thank you so much for featuring this game. Gun.Smoke is my best friends favorite NES game, we play it all the time for high scores and such. I always love how you show all the versions so we can see them all compared. Keep up the awesome work!
Thanks for the nice words and glad you enjoyed it. I like showing the different versions especially of something interesting pops of behind-the-scenes like desperado turning into Gunsmoke :-)
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I loved that part as well. The history of these games means a lot to me, and I want my kids to know where these games came from as well. You are doing great work!
@@coffeecuparcade Red Dead Revolver, going to be published by Capcom, would have been like Panzer Dragoon and Sin and Punishment but had ability to move player character freely, and would have special attacks like Buffalo Stampede, Cannonball, and Spin Fire. Multiplayer would include birdman and a baby as playable characters, and would have fantasy-horror supernatural ghost story where Red being the undead.
I enjoy your work thoroughly and even check out most of the games that I didn't have the pleasure/displeasure of playing in the arcades. Something about your voice and presentation is wholesome yet aimed at an older audience. If you need any suggestions for future games to dig into, I'd love to learn more about Carnevil or better yet, the Time Crisis series. Both of those ones made my arcade visits memorable and seeing them now causes a flood of nostalgia to hit me like a Sharknado. Keep up the great work and keep em comin'!
That's nice of you to say. Those two are on my long list of games to get to so I will cover them at some point. Glad you enjoyed the content so much. Thank you
You are a legend my man!
I adore gunsmoke on the NES :D
Gunsmoke was one of those games as a kid I never particularly liked but had a friend who was super good at it.
idk but the horse galloping sound makes me laugh
Some good memories playing this arcade. My stepfather loved western games.
How gun.smoke got it's period is fuckin hilarious my guy🤣🤣
LOL, I think you might be the first person to comment on it :-) thanks
Gun.Smoke is also available on all current gen hardware as part of Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium
very nice. always loved this game.
SO much more fun than Commando! More immediate, faster, less frustration from Commandos hit-and-miss 10 / 2 o'clock shooting. Perhaps the Western theme wasn't so cool at the time. Great video as always Patman, thank you!
One of the hardest games I have ever played to be honest. Thanks
GUNSMOKE RULES! Love the video! I had no clue this game is pseudo responsible for the red dead series
9:30 I Love the Awesome Manga/Anime character details style design heads of the Most Wanted posters of the last of the Scum and Villainy of the Bounty in the Old Wild West
11:14 Ayako Mori she Composed Music and Sound Effect for CAPCOM greatest hits like Ghosts 'N Goblins, 1942, Trojan, and More
14:45 Very good Japanese commercial of CAPCOM GUN.SMOKE for Nintendo Famicom/NES
I recall only encountering this cab in one place when new and it wasn't there long so I never got much time on it. I have put many hours into the NES and various compilations though.
Thanks for the video pat, I have this pcb just waiting for a cab to drop it into. 😊
Which romset u have? Us set 1 or 2? They make a capcom to jamma adapter for easier wiring. That's how I did mine.
This channel is awesome 😊
Love this game. I will never forget the first time I played it with the NES advantage.
For those who wanted a Western Feel to their action games, this and Konami’s “Iron Horse” were what they wanted. Just like others compared this to “Commando,” “Iron Horse” was the Wild West take on “Green Beret/Rush’n Attack.”
Law of the West was fun to play. One of My favorites
Got this game on my 6th bday and I’ll always remember it being the best game I got that day only because I couldn’t figure out how to play Goonies II lol
Pretty good and tough game. The first time I think I saw it was a co-worker had the actual arcade machine in his house back in '97. I didn't get very far and it was quite tough. lol And wow quite a history and I didn't realize that the TV show Gunsmoke ran 20 years. I do remember watching it as a kid though.
And hey speaking of Capcom. How about doing a video on Speed Rumbler? I feel that game is super underrated and is a fun arcade game!
Gun.Smoke was one of the toughest games I ever played in the arcade. 🐎
I think it is very difficult to get the hang of. Early on. Once u figure out the controls and where the enemies spawn. It gets easier. At least IMO.
The German cyborg designs of the bosses look terrifying. It can keep my credit.
This game is also available on Nintendo Switch under Capcom arcade stadium 2nd
I remember this game back in the day. Good game.
The arcade version and the nes version of Gun.Smoke are both brilliant and I will play both of them. 😀👍🎮🤠
Still one of my Favorite NES games .
Gun.Smoke remains my favorite shooter on the NES. I also like it a lot more than the arcade version, which totally destroys me.
My first good western game was actually Bank Panic. The game's a true classic. But Sunsetriders takes a close second. Gunsmoke sort of reminded me of 1942's gameplay.
Trojan would be a nice video too. Huge nostalgia value for me.
The Big Bear in Reynoldsberg Ohio had this in there lobby in till the late 90s.
I played a finished every level on the Nes with a standard controller and let me tell you it came with pain. I ruined the tip of my thumb firing at all the enemy’s and wound up with a hammer joint or mallet finger in the top joint of my thumb. It’s such a good game just get a controller configuration with turbo buttons to help shoot all the baddies.
Gun Fight, Shooting Trainer, Mad Dog McCree, Sunset Riders, Sheriff/Bandido
I just did a rendition of the NES title screen and storyline for Dwelling of Duels! Talk about irony haha
Gunfight 1975.
The very first video gaming experience I can ever remember. I was so young back then that my dad had to hold me up to desired elevation where I could shoot my mom to death. Pixelwise of course.
Wild Gunman was not only a Nintendo Sprites Graphics game and was a Live Action Video game? They did not have Laserdisc games back in the 70s.
Yes, if you look carefully at the video I had shown you can see the name wild gunmAn On the cabinet
Αwesome classic arcade game, great sounds and graphics for the time,i liked it but found it pretty hard as a game i usually was good at shooters but could never seem to get past the 3rd maybe 4th stage at most with one coin.
When I first came across Gun.Smoke in a Local Arcade... I really enjoyed it - But it did have an issue... It wasn't an OG Cabinet, obviously the arcade had only bought the board to save costs and installed it into a Spare Cabinet...
... So what was the issue? It was a TWO BUTTON CABINET!!! I could never shoot right and always wondered why! Now I know!!!
Gun.smoke had no true dedicated cabinet. It was a "kit" game. Meaning they sold the game in a box that included the pcb, control panel overlay, marquee, sideart and wiring harness. Owners would covert the game from a previous cabinet. Like say pacman or donkey kong. Games like yie ar kung fu and mat mania were other examples of conversion kit games. That had no factory cabinet
The game is actually on the Capcom Arcade Stadium 2nd. You can get it for $1.99
Growing up thought it was based on the show but wondered why it was gun.smoke
You are not alone my friend
