The Neo-Geo is the arcade equivalent to a Terminator. It doesn't feel pain, or remorse, it doesn't get tired, and it will not stop until your wallet is dead!
LOL, comment of the day
Aka snk boss syndrome ~_^
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
$200 cartridges, you nailed it! lol
Best comment here! 😂
Neo-Geo was, and always has been, the unsung hero of the 90s! Everyone always harps on about Nintendo, Sega, and what ever else was prominent at the time, but everyone always hungered for 'that one bad ass game in that red multi game cabinet.'
The home system was the holy grail of us kids.
It sure was, nostalgia galore that's for sure :-)
Yeah but nobody could afford the damn thing lol
It was hard enough as a kid to get your parents to buy you a genesis 😝
@@JacaboBlanco seriously, haha! With inflation today the neo geo would be in the high 1000s for sure!
@@JacaboBlanco So true!
Neo Geo games were all underrated classics. Oh how I wish the console wasn't ridiculously expensive. I didn't even tell my parents i wanted it lol. I knew better
LOL, I can recall even back in the mid-90s talk of something called a multi-game hunter which was a piracy device for this unit. Apparently it would copy games onto floppy disks instead of actual cartridges. This device was extremely expensive as well though.
It was a luxury product, I could barely afford an Amiga at the time. I did collect most of the MVS titles during the noughties when they were reasonably affordable and I had my own income though, prefer to own the arcade versions anyway.
I told my parents I didn't want a Gameboy because I knew money was tight. I did get a couple tiger electronic handhelds.
In Latin America, Neo Geo was a great phenomenon, especially for the Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug and King of Fighters sagas. The Neo Geo cabinet could not be missing in grocery stores at the neighborhoods. It was a tradition for mothers to send their children to buy things at the grocery store, but the problem was that kids spent the money playing, which was a guarantee that they would be severely punished.
It would be nice if you would review some of these games in the future, especially the aforementioned franchises. Neo Geo was the best console we ever played, but never owned.
Same with Australia lol.. bringing the bread home in four hours time.
That's... somewhat relevant to what we used to have here, but the kids would just use the money in actual gambling machines (noone under 18 allowed, but limitations breed creativity).
LOL, that's hilarious. I will plan on covering more games in the future. Thanks
I saw Metal Slug all over Mexico. I hadn’t seen in the States but it was hugely popular in Southern Mexico.
I remember seeing this imported from Japan in 1990 and was blown away by the graphics. It was just so expensive that it was like some incredible unicorn that u couldn't touch. It was the forbidden candy that only the rich could eat, as Patman says u have to understand that when this came out it was the same as having the arcade at home. No other company had done this before.
Absolutely, a unicorn sums it up perfectly :-)
Hell yeah, let's see you cover more Neo Geo games! I'd be glad you did!
LOL, you got it
Don't apologize for not covering enough titles, your video made me discover a few gems I wasn't even aware of!
The Samurai Showdown series would be great for a documentary.
I will added to the list, thanks
I saw an interview somewhere with a person who made samurai shodown 2. Very interesting & it was also mentioned that samurai shodown 2 kicked street fighter 2's ass in japan. Was the most popular game
"IKARI Warriors" was so good. But "Samurai Showdown" was the best NEO-GEO game.
Absolutely
At 2:04-Ikari Warriors was originally intended to be an officially licensed Rambo game? I always thought there was a conspicuous resemblance with the character design! This was another of my favorites, with the wide array of powerups and the tanks.
No doubt. Samurai Showdown made me a fighting game fan.
I love the crazy top down racers. Rally and street racing. Best of their kind.
@nemo pouncey nice. I have that on xbox Taito Legends. I didnt know it was Neo Geo
I remember going to the movie theater just to play Metal Slug in the lobby. Good times.
Absolutely
A friend of mine had the home console version and I can tell you those cartridges were HUGE! It was an amazing console and the upright version was even better since it had the ambiance of an arcade.
Sweet early 90s memories.
The friend that I mentioned in the video was over here from Japan going to school so his parents were loaded
The Art of Fighting was the first Neo Geo arcade game that I ever played and I was immediately hooked on the large player sprites. There was literally nothing else like it at that time.
I agree, especially with the zooming Effect
Loved the Neo Geo cabinets at the arcade back in the 90s. The games always looked and sounded beautiful, and you got a choice of more than one title to throw your quarters at.
The Neo Geo - the king of consoles! Soooo expensive, but IT IS an actual arcade in your home! Great vid 👍👍👍
It was fantastic thank you
"I would drool like a simpleton, and it wasn't just because of his hot mom!" I love the juvenile jokes you throw in there! Great video!
Thanks so much! :-)
Great video! Back in 1992, when I was a kid, I used to go to video stores (Videomax). I used to play Sengoku a lot with my friend. Now, I am proud to be the owner of my very own Neo Geo MVS 2-slot cabinet. Yep! I have Sengoku MVS cartridge.! I will keep this until my time is up.
Excellent, always wanted one of those systems but they were way too expensive for my blood. Thanks
Everyone in school would argue about Sega and Nintendo, but everyone agreed that Neo Geo's console was ridiculously good.
Yes indeed it was And it was also the holy Grail because I knew I would never own one LOL
Yes, please cover more Neo Geo games. Even if they weren't a long running series. There was so many good games from SNK
Aye thanks for making this video. I had a lot of fun watching this on my day off. Absolutely love your channel
Glad to hear it! Thank you so much
Great video! I've been having a blast playing a lot of these Neo Geo classics on the Nintendo Switch eshop!
It's so great that retro gaming made such a huge comeback that we are able to experience the old titles once again on our new systems. Thank you
It’s always a GREAT DAY when my man Pat has a new video out. Thank you for providing us with such amazing content week after week, month after month, and year after year! You’re amazing my friend. 👍👍👍
I really do appreciate the nice words. Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed them
I have been following this system since it was released here in the USA back in 1991, when a buddy bought one, when I suggested it to him, as he wanted the most high tech system available. Now I own an AES, MVS, and the two Neo mini's released, plus a decent collection of carts. The quality of the games were good, which is why it lasted as long as it did, as well as the fact that it took advantage of the fighting game craze at the time as well. I still play the Neo several times a week, on a an older TV of course.
Excellent, congratulations. I always wanted to own one but never did. Pretty much own everything else from the Atari 2600 on but never a Neo Geo
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries It truly is a special system with its own aura. Seeing it for sale as a console then going five stores down in the same mall to an arcade that had the cabinet was fairly awesome.
I binged the neo geo on my raspberry pi last holiday season.. Made up for the lost time I never had access to it in the 90's
Great video as always sir
Excellent, glad you enjoyed it
You're awesome, Patman! Great video.
I forgot SB2020 was a NeoGeo game! The sega port is excellent as well and we played it a lot. Thanks for the great video, Pat the Man!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks
I absolutely LOVE the Neo Geo startup sound.
The local Walmart had the first Neo-Geo arcade machine when I was in high school. It had Cyber-Lip, Sengoku, Ninja Combat, and Burning Fight on it. Ninja Combat being my favorite. Then the PX on the air force base got one in their arcade, which got me hooked on Fatal Fury. The system did inspire awe at the time.
Great video as always, neogeo arcade games especially samurai shodown IV was one of my favorite games as a kid, thanks for the memories PatmanQC.
Glad you enjoyed! Thank you
Awesome history of, thanks PatmanQC! SNK games are some of my favorites including Samurai Shodown 1 and 2, and many of the action games. Great graphics and fun gameplay most times. I remember the home versions only had limited continues, so some games I never completed. Thanks!
Thanks a lot. I always enjoyed the samurai series as well
I Have Been Waiting for This Moment to watch everything about Neo-Geo and it's games.. Another Excellent Video, Mr. Patman..and I'm Planning to have my snacks while watching more of your videos and I have still loving your content too..I played Baseball Stars too and which I enjoyed it very much and my personal favorite Golf game is Neo-Turf Masters..for fighting games I played The King of Fighters because it has 4 of it's characters that came from their series in the 80s like Psycho Soldier and Ikari Warriors..and finally I have a big love for Metal Slug Series which still up to this day..and lastly I Developed a Passion of Bowling since long time ago..and I'm going to try playing it when the time comes..hope to have a very wonderful excellent day 😊👍
I'm so happy to have a Neo-Geo pandora box arcade stick design from Amazon my Dream Machine finally came true 😍🥰
Excellent, those look really cool
Although I've seen games before it, Atari with a friend, and Super Mario Bros and Castlevania 3 (cousin had a nes), The first game I ever played on the arcade was "Ninja Combat" for the Neo Geo, I loved playing that game when I was a Kid, I recently bought a MVS console, and I plan on getting that game, and keep it til my last breath.
That was one of the first Neo Geo games I ever playedAlongside baseball stars
Love the comparison shots you added.
Thank you :-)
Thank You for doing this video. Covering my favorite game company and system. Ikari Warriors is my favorite SNK title but, the Neo Geo is my favorite arcade platform and console.
Excellent, glad you enjoyed it
I've been curious about Neo-Geo since I saw the arcade Cabinet on laundry mat along with X-Men vs. street fighter. My 9 year old self was blown away by the Neo-Geo arcade Cabinet
I love your retrospectives... they are full of facts and information that the general player does not know. Your coverage of ports and remakes on specific games are outstanding to see how the old system conversions were made (good or bad). Neo Geo being a full system is very hard to cover it's array of genres and 140+ game titles. Looking back through your archive, it seems you only did 1 specific "History of" on Windjammers, probably because of the release of WJ2 a few months prior to that video. Hopefully you will do more of the individual or specific genre SNK series at some point. I know there isn't much to cover in the aftermath of these games as there were only re-release ports on other consoles and no real emulation or recreations on home computer systems to showcase. But the history behind the games is what you do best.
Absolutely loved Samurai Shodown! Great graphics, great sound. And I loved how the screen would zoom in and out during play. I wish I knew how much money I spent on the MVS version back in the day.
I always thought that was a great affect as well
Wow the graphics, the animation, the backgrounds are probably my favorites till today. So many good & cool looking games. Neo Geo still impressive today. Great doc. 👍
Everything still holds up 30+ years later. Thank you
Love your content dude, keep up the amazing work!
Thank you very much , I appreciate that
Amazing video! NEO-GEO is the pinnacle of retro gaming!
That was pretty funny, there was a commercial right when the sound screwed up in the video, so I'm sitting here doing all kinds of stuff trying to figure out what happened to my phone and why it's not kicking out sound anymore.. because I skipped the commercial...
You definitely should cover more Neo Geo games, since there are countless classics on there. Not really thought of for its beat em up games but it has some excellent ones like Robo Army, Mutation Nation, Sengoku 3, etc. Then there are the amazing shmups like Blazing Star and Pulstar. And tons of fighting games like Garou Mark of the Wolves, Samurai Shodown, King of Fighters, Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, etc. Not to mention there are 6 Metal Slug games, with 2 and X being the very best. You also forgot the Shock Troopers games and the first one is perhaps the best overhead/isometric run n gun ever (with MERCS being the only real competition).
I must have spent a small fortune on Alpha Mission 2 at my local video store. It was an amazing game and I loved playing it.
I used to grind at this game a few days a week, at $1 per play (in 1992 Australia).
After a few weeks, I actually became very good at it and on the penultimate day, I managed to get to the final boss on one credit only to be killed seconds away from victory.
The video store owner was watching me intently, quickly ran up to the machine and dropped in another credit. Seconds later I defeated the game.
I thanked the bloke for the extra credit until he told me (to my dismay) that he keeps the games at the video store until someone beats it , which usually took a few weeks. He had Alpha Mission 2 sitting there for a year and basically wanted it gone, hence the extra credit.
Fortunately he told me the next place the machine was going to so I could continue my addiction to this wonderful game.
Many years later, I managed to get my hands on an actual MVS cart of Alpha Mission 2, along with various Metal Slug carts.
That cost a dollar to play? That's insane. It was only $0.25 over here
Let me say this. You play street fighter 2 because it’s iconic and good. You play king of fighters because it’s perfect.
Dude I love the neo geo, been playing it since the 90s. I think I'm one of the few people that has gotten a perfect 300 on league bowling
Excellent, The way the pins fly around and the spotty collision detection always made it difficult for me. Still a fun game to play though
A bit of a small correction: SNK was founded in 1978, not 1973.
Otherwise, this video came at the right time, especially with the KOF hype. Thank you!!
Sorry about that
Neo-Geo is the best arcade hardware ever built. Really happy to see your take in it.
Have a 4 slot and 6 slot at home.
I'd love to see more in-depth videos about the games/series on the platform.
Thank you, I will definitely cover it some more in detail
I played in the arcade right at the beginning in 1990, and still play to this day on various platforms. Highlights include: Samurai Shodown 2, Crossed Swords 1&2, Puzzle Bobble (Bust A Move), Neo Turf Masters, Sengoku 2, Super Dodge Ball, and Garou: Mark of the Wolves. Great documentay, I admire your delivery. Could you do a doc on Neo Turf Masters? It's the best golf game on Neo Geo, even for those of us who aren't really into Golf.
the metal slug nostalgia hit me hard. just a simple sidescroll shooter but the animation, sfx, weapon upgrades, vehicles, co-op were all on point. absolutely perfect for what it was.
Everything was so polished on the game
Metal Slug games are great. All 6 on the platform are greato play.
Love these videos!
The sprite work on these games is still insane today
Yes it is, it's unreal That the system is almost 35 years old
All the graphics are sprites including the backgrounds the Neo Geo could only do sprites.
Great video! I just found your channel and am working my way through the back-catalog. I never knew anyone who had an AES growing up, but I used to lust over the advertisements as a kid. I have fond memories of playing Metal Slug at my local WalMart (before they were “supercenters”) I remember the cabinet was a 4-way with Samurai Showdown, Art of Fighting, and one of the Metal Slugs with zombies. I also had Super Baseball 2020 for SNES but never knew it was previously an arcade game. By the time I had my first job at 14, the N64 was around the corner. Anyway, your video turned me onto some beat-em-ups that I never knew existed like Gang Wars and Ninja Combat. Time to fire up MAME lol.
Thanks a lot. In the early 90s I knew a guy who had a high-paying job who was around 35, single and lived alone. Every week for a few months he would spend $200 out of his paycheck and buy a brand-new Neo Geo game. I was so jealous :-)
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Dang! I really just wish I had bought a NeoGeo CD over 20 years ago when they were relatively affordable. I’d love to have one now, but they just cost too much. I’m debating on a Mister, just because it can do so many different things. I also saw some MVS console “remake” on eBay, but haven’t really dug into what that really is.
Thank you for the great work Sir
Thank you so much
Neo Geo was the top of the line arcade games 🕹
Another top notch video. Thank you.
Thanks again!
Nice video. It would be great if you could do a video about the Metal Slug franchise!
It's on the list but it's also a massive undertaking LOL
World Heroes, Fatal Fury 2, Samurai Shodown. Those were the NEO GEO games I played as a teenager back in the 90s. Good times.
You and me both my friend :-)
I never saw one outside of a gaming magazine until i was in my 30s and saw one in a used game store.
There were in pretty much every 711 growing up
What a great vídeo! Salutes from Brazil!
Thank you very much, greetings from the USA
The First time I ever played a Neo Geo Cabinet was at this bowling alley in Astoria QueensNYC. I remember Magician Lord, Baseball Stars, Nam 75 and The Super Spy were the games selectable. I remember laughing hard at the Engrish voice actor of Nam 75, or Magician Lord. Dale Lord of the Gods stage music was etched in my head. Also fun fact many of these games were programmed and tested on a Sharp x6800. Great video Patman!!!
LOL, the voice acting was pretty terrible. Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it
Fun-tas-tic video, Neo Geo, my fav console!! Thank you for the Really-Rad vid. Rock-On!!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much
Heya PatmanQC,
Awesome video. What arcade junkie doesn't love Neo-Geo???
So many hit games, I struggle to find a bad one...
One game that was released late in it's life, is sort of a Golden Axe clone and friggin' awesome is: The Crystal of Kings
As a kid, my friends and I used to go to the local Wal-Mart almost every day during summer vacation to play Samurai Shodown. Still love that game! For anyone else that never had a NeoGeo home console, there's a replica SNK MVSX home arcade machine available now that comes with 50 built in NeoGeo games. It looks very close to the original red cabinet design (though just a bit smaller) and plays fantastic. I got mine for $500, which is absurd to think the original console with 1 game still cost way more than that in the 90s! And $200 per game is complete madness.
Thanks for the video, and I'd love to see you cover more NeoGeo games!
i want one! did you get yours from amazon (currently unavailable stock)?
Love the Neo geo!! Would really enjoy part 2!!😁👍
Glad you enjoyed!
For over a year now my brother and my best friend meet up every Thursday night for Micro Machines, Garou: Mark of the Wolves and Windjammers. It has not gotten old yet.
Excellent,Still a fun system to play with
My cousin got the neo geo for Christmas one year. My friends and I were shocked to say the least. None of our families had much money so having that was unreal. All of our Sega/Nintendo arguments were immediately shut down whenever he was around lol
LOL, that's hhilarious
The Neo Geo was a fun system and I enjoyed going to the arcade to play it.
As a kid on Ling Island they had the deli. The graphics and the multiple games.in one cabinet blew my mind. Always wanted the home console but so expensive even today.
Yes, to me that was the holy Grail
Like you said, arcade cabinets really used to be everywhere. Some of my fondest memories as a kid was riding my bike to this local campground that had Turtles in Time and a few others I can no longer remember.
There's still a cabinet in this local gas station in my city, it's out of the way, but was a head turner when I stopped in for a quick fill up.
One of the campgrounds I went to growing up had four or five arcade games as well. They also had a giant light gun shooter the projected images on the wall and you shot at them. Don't know what it was called
We never had arcades in my part of Australia but we did have cabinets in a newsagent, fuel stations and the bowling alley.
Most of the cabinets were SNK cabinets.
We still have one place that has 1 Tekken arcade cabinet.
Amazing how they were everywhere back in the day
took way more coins than standard games.. but the graphics and sound... i was addicted.
World Heroes was one of the only arcade games I could beat in one go. One of the characters had a spam attack you could beat everyone with.
SNK definitely had some great titles. I have recently gotten Metal Slug 3 for my Xbox One. It is absolutely brutal in difficulty but is fun. Great video!!
The metal slug series is fantastic, thanks
The first time I saw one of these cabinets at 7-11 I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I rode my bike home like the wind to beg for quarters to play Magician Lord. I got $5 and it lasted about 3 min. No slurpee for me that day but I didn't care though it was amazing.
LOL, that sounds about right. The game was difficult
I play neo geo arcade games when I was a kid and still kick ass a lot. 😀👍🎮
They are still fun to play, I especially love puzzle bobble and windjammers
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries that's cool my friend. 😀👍🎮
Everything time I think about Neo-Geo or hear the start up sequence I can smell dryer sheets in my head because everytime I went to the laundromat there was always a MVS cabinet there.
LOL, that's great
Shock Troopers is probably my favorite Neo Geo game.
I need to spend more time with that one in particular
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries It plays like like Commando meets Metal Slug. Everything oozes with personality too.
Nam 1975 and Ikari Warriors was awesome. Heck, even my father was playing it back then and still talks about how great the Neo Geo arcade system was today. It was a fun time to be a teen in the 1990's arcade scenes.
I love the neogeo. Garou: MOTW is probably my all time favorite fighting game ever. Thankfully pretty much all of the fighting games and some of the other stuff from snk is available on fightcade through emulation
I am surprised you didnt add Mvsx in the video! Other then that great video!
If you weren't around then, you will never really understand the mystique and prestige of Neo Geo back then. I did not know anyone who owned a home system, but remember seeing the games for sale at Babages. It was crazy.
I knew someone who had a high-paying job and no family whatsoever so we had a bunch of extra cash to spend. He would buy a new game every few weeks. Crazy
I loved me some Vanguard in the early 80's. As always, thanks for the memories.
Glad you enjoyed it
Remember playing the arcade versions at rest stops and arcades at the mall. The home version got stuck with the ports on SNES/Genesis versions. It be cool if you cover the other Neo Geo games too
I plan on doing more of those games
I used to play some of thi games in my Naval base. Thanks for the memories.
I gotta admit I had kind of a love-hate relationship with Neo Geo. A small part of me was always annoyed seeing those ubiquitous red cabinets everywhere because to me part of the charm of arcade games in the 80s especially was the unique cabinet artwork and control layouts for so many games, and this generic standardized box was the total antithesis of that. On the other hand, the system had a lot of great games and some that I fell totally head over heels for. The ones I have the fondest memories of playing and probably put the most money into are Puzzle Bobble, SamSho 2, Metal Slug 1, Neo Drift Out, and Super Sidekicks. Would love to see a video on the Samurai Shodown series sometime. I sucked hard at those games, but boy were they still fun to play anyway!
love it, thanks!
NeoGeo game lineup in the beginning: a *wide variety* of games, ranging from okayish to great
NeoGeo game lineup 1994 onwards: fighting game, fighting game, fighting game, Metal Slug, fighting game...
truth
Yes unfortunately
I remember those neo geo arcade machines in the fish and chips shops. Where I lived, many years ago. Great times.
Same here!
I almost bought the neo geo mini but I opted in on the snk arcade stick pro. Along with a controller adapter USB its my go to for playing fighting games on modern consoles. But the fighting games built in is nice to play once in a while.
The music in Vanguard is from the film Flash Gordon.
The 1980 Flash Gordon movie? One of my favorite movies and did not know that
I definitely would love to know more games for this 👍🏻
It's on the list my friend
Thanks for the entertaining history lesson!
Thank you for watching :-)
When I saw a NEO-GEO machine I knew I was in a kick ass arcade! A grocery store with just a NEO cabinet and a claw game could beat many arcades even then in my small town! This was the creme de la creme of video games in early 90s!!! What's the beat-em up with the red and blue robot dudes? We played the sheets off that baby!
Was it a Neo Geo game with blue and red robots?
Yes, it was on a NEO GEO multigame cabinet. Sort of like Final Fight but with cyborgs or robots. Great game.
So many memories. I joined the Air Force in December ‘91 aged 16. A local pub where I was stationed had a Neo Geo. Sengoku and King of Monsters were my games of choice . I was introduced to beer and one heck of an arcade machine simultaneously. Happy days 😃😃😃
I loved both of those games
I remember seeing the Neo Geo System over at Nobody Beats The Wiz. The system was $600 and the games were $200 each. I was so jealous of the kids on that show Video Power who won that system on there.
Never saw that show.
My favorite fighting game is Samurai Shodown V Special!
Magician Lord and King Of The Monsters kinda look like Sega Genesis launch titles.
Man do I ever remember lusting after these when I was 11. The Neo just seemed so far ahead of other consoles at the time. Too bad the types of games for them were ratehr limited, as I prefer a good RPG or strategy game, but those genres weren't really what Neo Geo owners were looking for, and those types of games aren't in any arcade, and that's what the Neo Geo was, a literal arcade system you can take home.
Am gonna have to check out Ikari Warriors on my upgraded super console x :)
Awesome way to make a Video about the Neo-Geo Console to Celebrate the Release of the Upcoming "King of Fighters XV."
Excellent, hope you enjoyed it
