More like Contra meets Cowboys in the Wild West if you ask me, it's really an underrated game that has a lot more in common with the Contra series, it deserved a lot more attention...

In my childhood in the late 1980's and early '90's, I lived in a town called El Toro in Orange County, California. Back then, it was common for arcade cabinets to be at pizzerias and there was a Pizza Hut at the strip mall across the 6 lane road from the condominium complex my family lived at.
There was an enclosed arcade in the back of the restaurant with about four cabinets and some sticker machines. This arcade had both the first Sunset Riders and Street Fighter II cabinets that I ever played. I spent a lot of time playing on these cabinets and I associate playing these games with a slight element of danger as I was only about 9 years old and my parents forbade me from crossing the 6 lane road which I did anyway.
A few years later, after my family relocated to the east coast US and I grew into adolescence, I found a copy of the Genesis (Mega Drive) port for cheap at a thrift store. Even then, I played the game with feelings of nostalgia for simpler times when my family lived in California.
Another great video, Richard. Thanks for making it!

In 1991, Konami was wiping up the arcade industry with its massively popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles beat-em-up. The draw was more than just the license - it was also the four-player simultaneous action. With that in mind, Konami created Sunset Riders, a Wild West-themed run-and-gun. It expands upon the same formula as Surprise Attack (and by extension, Rolling Thunder and Shinobi) by having two-tiered stages you can jump between. There are even doors you can run into to get power-ups.
The major difference here is that you can shoot upwards, downwards, and even diagonally. This versatility, along with the looser controls and faster pace, makes the action feel a bit more like Contra. That game was crazy enough by itself, but it gets pretty chaotic when you have four players firing bullets at nearly half a dozen enemies coming out from all angles, especially since you die with a single hit. The four heroes each wield two types of weapons - Steve and Billy carry six-shooters while Bob and Cormano use shotguns, each with different firing configurations. There are items that increase the rapid-fire capabilities, too, or give you an extra weapon with a spread shot.
Each of the eight stages begins with a “WANTED” sign, showing off the boss of the level, each of whom has some unique distinction. Simon Greedwell is a rich tycoon that cries out “Bury me with my money!” Chief Scalpem is a Native American, whose sister protects him before you deliver the final blow, claiming “Please, please don’t shoot my brother! He’s only following orders!” To which your character replies “Okay ma’am. We won’t shoot him.” (Despite the fact that you spent the whole battle shooting at him, but let’s disregard that.) The final boss is a British gentleman named Sir Richard Rose, who fakes his death after several hits, removes a bulletproof plate from under his shirt, and proceeds to take more damage before dying for real, when he dramatically tosses his rose lapel aside. The whole thing is obviously very tongue-in-cheek, and adds a lot of personality.
There are lots of cool little features which fit in with the Old West theme. The first stage has you trying to avoid a stampede by running on the backs of bulls, a few other areas have you riding on horses. Running inside certain doors will grant you some whiskey for extra points, or “refreshments” (!!) from one of the town ladies. Some enemies will throw dynamite, which can be picked up and thrown back at them if you’re quick enough. The stages are also littered with barrels, boulders, and other bits of scenery that can be pushed and used to drop onto bad guys. There are also a few first-person shooting galleries that act as bonus stages, foreshadowing Konami’s western-themed light gun game Lethal Enforcers II: Gunfighters. One entire stage is a boss fight in a saloon, which ends with a can-can dance show. The fantastic soundtrack is appropriate to the Western theme and is full of the typical Konami energy.
Sunset Riders is an excellent game, and a fine alternative to the Contra series, especially for those who prefer the run-and-gun aspects of the earlier games.
As far as the ports go, the SNES version is remarkably faithful. The four-player functionality is gone, however. Most of the graphics have transitioned well, although some of the fancier effects, particular the sprite scaling, are absent. It’s quite a bit easier, too, with less going on at any given time. The music is almost perfectly replicated and most of the voice samples are in, now with subtitles so they’re easier to understand.

However you are wrong about Western movies not being popular in our lifetimes, as here in the US Dances with Wolves, Unforgiven, 3 Amigos(more a comedy spoof but still), Tombstone, plus The Quick, and The Dead all did gang busters in the 80's, and 90's.

I do recall presumably the reason why "Chief Scalpem" was changed to "Chief Wigwam" was the whole brutal act of scalping has been a negative stereotype of Native Americans when they were once depicted as violent savages.
I imagine Native Americans complained after getting wind of this as his name got changed for the SNES port, on top of replacing all the enemies into even more bandits to not potentially upset them further.
This change was apparently also retroactively applied to the Switch release of the original arcade game as he's still named "Chief Wigwam".
I can imagine this being an issue for Nintendo rereleasing the arcade Super Punchout, as they'd need to record the same digitized voice to replace "Vodka Drunkinski" to his current "Soda Popinski" name

1991 at the arcades for me (as a 9-year-old kid) was Street Fighter II and this. I have fond memories of playing this game with my cousins and friends, and a sizeable portion of my lunch money ("Bury me with my... money") went into those machines. Also enjoyed it on the SNES later on.
Never got to play with 4 simultaneous players, as the 2-player version was prevalent where I lived. I guess arcade operators preferred it because it could be put into most existing cabinets (therefore cheaper).

Man, I grew up in this one. Many great memories of arcades in stores and pizzerias in the Bronx, NY. Man o man, Top Hat, have you ever heard of Playland ? It was a famous or infamous arcade joint nestled in the heart of Times Square in Manhattan. It had closed down in 98/99. I remember hearing that the reason for closure was due to many kids cutting school just to hang out there and pass the time playing games. This is where I first saw games like MK 4 and Marvel Vs Capcom 1 ah, memories... there’s some old school video out there that captured the arcade I referenced. I’ll provide the link. Any other arcade enthusiast from or around that New York time period- Sound off !

That "Don't kill my brother" portion always drove me mad. Mainly because he was the second most frustrating boss in the game, after El Greco, and you just wish she'd have appeared like 5 minutes sooner or something. Good game, but I prefer C.O.W.Boys of Moo Mesa. It's more forgiving, obviously because it was aimed at kids.

Fantastic game and an all time fav, though a'm a bit surprised you didn't mention the likes of Gun Smoke and Bolld Bros, both were very popular in the arcades back then

Apologies for the long comment, but...
In the first twelve years of my childhood (1996 - 2008, for those curious) I was stuck in the polluted, Sun-blasted hell where everything, vegetable or animal, wanted you dead and would stop at nothing to put you in that state (I.E the Jumping Cholla cactus), known as Arizona. About 45 minutes from one of our houses was a recreated Wild Western town/theme park/tourist attraction by name of Rawhide.
While we never even went to the area it was in, I chance-glanced a Sunset Riders cabinet while my parents were talking to one of the employees about something I cannot remember. throughout the time in Oregon, I would think back to that time, and how fun it looked, and summarily kick myself mentally for not asking if we could go over so I could play it.
It wasn't until late 2019, or perhaps maybe even earlier this year, that my favourite arcade of all time, (that being the still-unfinished, only limited-opening Next Level Pinball and Arcade Shop, Showroom and Muiseum, in Hillsboro, Oregon) was visited, and where Dungeons and Dragons: Tower of Doom (Which I've yet to play) was previously, they suddenly had that which I'd wished I'd played for almost, or over a decade.
Since their business model is "Pay $15 for a wristband, and stay the entire 12 hours we're open for if wanted, because literally everything is on free play", I wound up, as Steve, beating it twice in that visit.Though I wasn't able to beat the high score, the game - barring the...outdated cultural depictions of First National North American tribes (I actually emitted an audible "Oh gods. X3" when Chief Scalpem showed up on the poster, following it with "Yep definitely a product of the late '80s/early'90s" - was literally everything I thought it would be and so much more.
Funny, though, how I picked the one character that spoke after Chief's defeat, though.

You forgot to mention Gun.Smoke from 1985 which was undoubably an inspitation to Sunset Riders and is also a spiritual prequel to Red Dead Revolver

  • @clawofthefallen
    @clawofthefallen 4 роки тому

Check out the often overlooked spiritual sequel Mystic Warriors. Also there's another often overlooked Konami arcade game called Metamorphic Force in the same vein of X-Men, but with characters transforming into animals which had Dolph Lundgren and Martin Sheen (most probably without their official consent) in the Game Flyer to promote the game.
