HAWAII BEST TONKATSU! || [Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii] Japanese Katsu & Shave Ice!
• HAWAII BEST TONKATSU! ...
Felix, you are the pro with all your eating tips. I love it!
Can't wait to take a island hopper from Big Island.. My daughter and I went to Lady M and we were so lucky to get seated at Ginza Bairin Tonkatsu across the alley on Beach Walk.. Incredible!! Next is Tomafuji!! Also LOVE Lady an Pig when in Oahu . Great video!!
I know..kind of late to the party, but another new subscriber!! Local boy from Kaneohe that relocated to Colorado. I’m coming home in about a week & can’t wait to try some of your fav spots. Mahalo
Welcome to our Foodie ohana! 🤙
These guys are so awesome and local style. I like the pro tip: eat the katsu over the rice to get crispy rice! We totally do that.
Thank You Amanda And Filex LOVE and GOD BLESS You Both😙⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘💜💙
Aloha guys 🌺 omg the food today yummy , yummy , yummy , getting our list together 👍
It’s worth it! Hope you can try it🤤
OMG crunch! That tonkatsu is bomb!! And, the ice shave is killahz!
It was ono 🤙🏻🤤
Both places looked amazing! I could eat that shave ice with a little less guilt! 2 places I’ll have to definitely try! Awesome video!!
Yes definitely gotta! Mahalo Teresa 🤙🏻
Thank you for your video review, My wife and I are coming to Hawaii for vacation in May and we have made reservations. really looking forward to it.
I went there last month and it was divine. And I’m not even a big tonkatsu fan usually.
I couldn’t get a reservation online and when I called (a month ahead) I was told they were booked til January (3 months). But my hotel concierge was able to secure a 4:00 pm (when they open) reservation for me.
One sad note: the nice car valet lady in the garage underground told me she’s never had the Tonkatsu, and she was so sweet she was stymied when I gave her a $ tip. When I return to Oahu I’m going to Tamafuji again and will get her a takeout dinner!
It is also my favorite and best tonkatsu place anywhere and it is located in honolulu. We make reservations months in advance when we know we are going to the island. I love adding the hot mustard to my tonkatsu as it brings the bite to another level. You all making me drool and miss it. Hopefully I will visit soon. I love that you guys get dessert after every meal as I do the same. Thanks for the videos!
Awesome! Mahalo James🤙🏻 hope you can get more tamafuji soon🤤
What a lovely couple!! 😊☺😊☺
Ohhh snap! I’m headed down to Oahu with my partner at the end of this week for a week; I got super lucky and secured a reservation 3 days from today! Will report back with my findings, though I’m sure it’ll be mind blowing
Update: I hate how SO FREAKING GOOD this place is. I will dream of this place and the smell of the roasted grinds of the sesame seed bowl like it’s a ratatouille memory
Oh my. Aloha for sharing. This Haole is hungry now.
I stayed on Oahu for 5 years, came back to mainland and miss the Islands everyday.
Ha'aula hana iaʻu.
Definitely worth the wait. Been there a couple of times and if you like seafood, must get the tonkatsu oysters
Just checked out Monserrat Shave Ice! Wow everyone loved their syrups. Thanks for the recommendation.
Thank you for making a review of this restaurant
We totally agree with you! It's the best tonkatsu place! We ate there back in 2018 and by far, it was our favorite meal. We'll be visiting in June and after we saw your video, we tried to make a reservation and they are all booked up. We're so bummed. We were able to make reservations at another tonkatsu spot, Appetito's and Rigo's (based on your videos). Thanks for sharing.
Looks like very authentic Tonkatsu meals, as can’t wait to try ; meals look fabulous!
Mahalo Ann! It was ono🤤🤙🏻
Ono food . . . lush landscape - u guys make me smile and laugh and miss the island vibe so darn much! ❤️🌈🌺
Awww mahalo Terri!🤙🏻
Amazing Tonkatsu Meal !!! You two are so Awesome !!!
Mahalo Gail🤙🏻 you’re awesome too!
After going online everyday looking for a reservation, I finally was able to squeeze myself in when I travel there in August!!!!! So excited!!! I might get Felix’s plate and get extra salad! You guys are the best!🤙🏻😃
We were in Oahu end of March 22, and our first dinner was at Tamafuji. We made a reservation 2-3 months in advance, NOTE they do have take out. If you can't get a reservation, get the take out! When you get there, since you may have to wait, there is a tap house downstairs you can grab a beer. Anyway, the food I got the largest size (450g) of filet they offer, and my wife got the medium size (240g). I lived in Japan for 7 years, and Tonkatsu was always my favorite. This Tonkatsu is the only place in the US, I will ever go again. HOWEVER, I would recommend getting two of the 180g, rather than the largest one. The largest one is just a really thick cut of meat, and since most of the flavor is on the outside, the inside was a little bland/dry. It was just too thick. Also, the red jar says "Ama Kuchi" meaning sweet sauce, the black jar says "Kara Kuchi" meaning savory sauce, it is NOT spicy hot. The rice and cabbage is free refills, and the rice was some of the best we had short of my wife's farming family's rice fresh from the paddy. The regular miso soup was also very good. GO HERE! Enjoy!
Wow!! This looks so amazing, thank you for taking us with you to experience this meal. I just made my reservation for my Birthday meal in July when I get there! I cannot wait!!!
So exciting! 🤤
Omg. Family is visiting so we are going for take out tomorrow! Looked so ono! Our sister-in-law is originally from Japan and my brother said it looks like the place they go to in Japan. We can't wait! This was perfectly timed. Thanks for the great episode.
We hope you guys enjoy it!
@@AmandaFelixEats It was pretty good but I'm sure it is better dining in!
Thank you Amanda & Felix! You guys got our mouths watering! We are adding the recommendations to our itinerary! We will make the reservations as soon as the site let us based off our visiting date! Ty guys so much for your content!
Mahalo for watching us! 🤙
love the video
Love Tonkatsu Tamafuji! It’s da best! 🤗
Truly the best!🤙🏻
Ohh man, been waiting for this video! Going to Waikiki mid June.
We’ve been waiting too🤤
My gosh both those meals looked outstanding 😍 the crunch of the coating sounded amazing! Yum
Mahalo Angie!🤙🏻
😭What a beautiful video lol 😂😁👍❤️
Aloha you guys!!!! Love watching all your videos
Give me more!!!!!!!!
You got it Jennifer! Catch us every Monday/ Friday! 👍
Managed to get a reservation for July. Thanks for sharing this with us!
Awesome!
I love that you guys give a back story & some facts about the restaurants you guys go to! That’s what makes your vids so good & very informational 😊 Makes it less scary to try these new places!! Can’t wait for my trip to Oahu in June ☺️ Wow, everything looked so ʻono and very authentic!
Definitely make a res for this place! Worth it!
I loved this video! I went to Waikiki elementary too back in the late 90’s :) I can’t wait to visit HI soon and try these places 🤤
Ooh we might’ve met 👍🏻
@@AmandaFelixEats maybe! I went to Kaimuki Middle :) but I think I'm older than you
Aloha Amanda & Felix. The tempura shrimp looked super ono, I like how they refill the cabbage and rice (that rice looked so interesting too!). Gotta love shave ice!!! Hope you both have a nice weekend.
Mahalo Paula! Have a good weekend! 🤙
Food looks delicious guys
Mahalo David! 🤙
@@AmandaFelixEats see you guys in July can we meet up?
Stupid me for not watching this as soon as it came out. Maybe I could’ve got a reservation. I can feel my stomach growling louder and louder as the video goes along. Another great video.
BTW. If you are curious, cold aging is basically leaving the meat in the fridge for a few weeks. You basically let the meat surface dry out. So dry aging but limiting the bacteria.
Last time in HI we were going to do both Tamafuji and Ginza Bairin; I've loved tonkatsu my whole life, and have also had it in Japan. We only made it to Ginza Bairin and it was dry and tough (and very expensive), the most disappointing tonkatsu's I've ever had in my LIFE, which was weird given the great reviews; maybe just an off night, but don't think we'll ever return. Tamafuji is definitely on our list for our next visit. Thanks for the vid!
Looks amazing guys🤩 🤙🏼! One place we would love to go to, must remember to reserve 🤤
Yes! Reservations are a must! 👍
Thanks for sharing! Definitely want to try this place on the next visit. How much time in advance do we need to make a reservation?
We hope you can try them when you come back! Hawaii is getting busier so I would say at least 2-3 months in advanced! Some one else commented their fully booked thru June already
What a fabulous looking meal! It made me hungry! Your faces say it all when the food is delicious. I’ve not had aged pork. Definitely something to try. It didn’t look like your food burned your mouth, Amanda! Though it looked like a rolling boil 🥵 Does Felix know that cabbage is a vegetable? That’s the most vegetable I’ve seen him consume. Mahalo as always 🌺
It was that good! Probably the only time I see him order more vegetable 😅 definitely worth trying!
You have to try nana ai katsu in kaimuki! they used to be located in ohana hale market. layered katsu & so many other katsu bentos.
Check out our review on nana ai katsu!
ua-cam.com/video/r0vpVx_BLuI/v-deo.html
Love me some good Tonkatsu. I would have eaten all of your choices. Mahalo and Aloha.
Can't go wrong with katsu!
Hi Amanda and Felix , if you read this , it’s now 22nd Mar 2023 and I just tried to book Tonkatsu Tamafuji for my holiday in May.. You guys said it took a few months to book in.. The earliest booking I can find is the beginning of Aug 2023 .. That’s a 5 month WAIT now.. I most likely put it down to , that covid is just about done , people are travelling ✈️ So , I was able to get a table at Ginza Bairin Tonkatsu… They both do take-away but there is nothing like eating in 😋 Cheers
Aloha Friday 🤙🏾 #1
Happy aloha Friday!🤙🏻
I could do that place all day and I am especially get down brown with that katsu shrimp. Shaka's and mahalo y'all!
We wish we could’ve stayed all day! Now gotta wait couple months for our next res🤤🤙🏻
get down brown looool
On my last trip, I went to another Katsu joint in Waikiki & I’m obsessed!🔥👌🏼I really need to try this place. I’ll be going in Aug so reservations aren’t available yet but I definitely have it on my to-do list! 😅🙏🏻 You guys have the best channel…it’s my go-to page for food spots in Oahu✊🏻💯
It might have been Ginza Bairin? They are good as well!
I totally agree that this is the best tonkatsu in Hawaii. Having eaten many a tonkatsu meal in Hokkaido, Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka Tonkatsu Tamafuji easily measures up to the meals we've enjoyed in Japan. Was invited by the owner to their soft opening and since then have brought family and friends to the Kapahulu location numerous times. You will not be disappointed as long as you can snag a reservation. Their tsukemono is also so authentic and tasty.
Everything there is so tasty!
Peaked In Tamafuji last night on our way into Tokkuritei next door and the place was packed!
My Wife and I had reservations for Tonkatsu Tamafuji on 21 May 2023 and this place was amazing, 🤙😀
That is a really pretty mortar and pestle that they use for the sesame seeds. I miss Oahu so much. The food is so amazing there.
We agree! Very pretty and delicious katsu 😬
I don't know about that soggy katsu she had but his crunch was on another level 😮
Another great vid guys. Not sure if anyone has commented this, but just dropping by from England to tell you it's WOOSTER-sheer sauce! Have you been to Ginza Bairin in Waikiki? How do the two compare?
We have! Bairin is good too but we prefer tamafuji! Their tonkatsu is more tender and can’t go wrong with their sauce, rice and cabbage!
@@AmandaFelixEats Good to know, thanks. We haven't been but it always looks so good. Maybe we'll try Tamafuji instead now!
I love eating tongkatsu. ❤️
So good! 🤤
Aloha Amanda and Felix thank you for taking us alone on your latest foodie adventure. EVERYTHING looked so so ONO!!! Love you foodie tips and your expressions of total delight and satisfaction in your voices and on your faces. Makes me feel like I'm there with you guys. Mahalo Mahalo Mahalo 🤙🤙🤙❤❤❤. Did Amanda make down safely from the monkey bars?
Yes! I was able to get her down 😅 Mahalo for joining us on this Foodie adventure! 🤙
The ending have me 🤣😂 Felix get your girl down. 🏃🏽♂️💨💨💨💨💨
😂 had to stop that real quick ✋️
In Kyoto I remember grinding the sesame seeds. Man oh man the Tonkatsu in Japan is awesome. Can’t wait to try Tonkatsu Tamafuji.
You won't be disappointed! 👌
Great video! Just made a reservation for September. Do they still require a vaccine card or neg test?
Not required 👍
Ohh I always wanted to try Tamafuji. And I've tried Monsarrat shave ice, they're pretty goood. The older Japanese lady that was working at the time was too nice enough to take me a few mins after closing time.
You won't be disappointed! So good! 🤤
The best tonkatsu meat I ever had was in Tokyo. But that is because meat was kurobuta. The best overall tonkatsu I ever had was made by my aunt, over 40 years ago.
When Felix showed his tonkatsu, it looked like it was thin slices of pork that is layered and then made into tokatsu. One of the best ways to make tonkatsu because it makes it more tender to the bite.
I'm biased, but I think the Kaimuki/Kapahulu/Waikiki area is the most concentrated area in Hawaii for great places for grinds!
BTW, the like button on my laptop and my TV doesn't do anything when I select it. Must be a smartphone thing only. And no, i won't use my smartphone because I old. I need the big pikcha!
Mahalo Marvin for pressing that like button👍🏻 we love how they do the Katsu and the details they put into their craft! 🤤
@@AmandaFelixEats Standard Operating Procedure, press the 'Like' button then start watching the video!
Any tips on how to get a reservation?
You all should try wagyu katsu
You guys know really good places that have ono looking food. Before going out to buy food, I'd better check with your videos.
yeah i agree, THE LACY CABBAGE IS EVERYTHINGGGG omg it can even help fix a somewhat inferior (though not here obvi) tonkatsu lol it balances the richness and gives a freshness to fried food. throw on lots of fresh-squeezed lemon all over everything and I'M DONE. i cannot believe it's bottomless along with the rice!
as far as miso soup goes, my fav is a blend of red & white miso with a touch more red (cuz i'm a savoury kinda gal).
ok, this place is a gem and thank you, guys for this visit! i"d never know otherwise!
and p.s. - the climbing up is easy, it's the coming down that's UH OH 😄
The under rated cabbage! So good! 🤤
I just LOVE You two and 😙⚘⚘⚘⚘⚘💜💙
Mahalo Christina🥰
I just saw y’all in line at Maguro Bros. My son was waiting probably 5 spots ahead of Felix haha. I was illegally parked so I couldn’t get out to say hi
Oooh whaaaat?!? Wish we could’ve seen you! New video coming soon!
What about the Tonkatsu Bairin? Love them too!
Both are good but we like tamafuji! 👍
How did it compare to Bairin Tonkatsu in Waikiki?
Bairin is good too but we prefer tamafuji! Their tonkatsu is more tender and can’t go wrong with their sauce, rice and cabbage!
Have you been to Ginza Bairin? How does it compare?
We have! Bairin is good too but we prefer tamafuji! Their tonkatsu is more tender and can’t go wrong with their sauce, rice and cabbage!
You didn’t mention that Honolulu Rice Factory brings fresh rice from different parts of Japan which is why their rice tastes so good
Good info!
Is Spam jam over or are you gonna go back to that?
We are done filming spam jam but the festivities end May 1st. During spam we did posts of different restaurants on our Instagram. Follow us for more! 🤙
making a reservation as soon as we can for August. OMG, want to go just to have that rice. Would it be too piggy to have a bowl of rice with my Katsu Don? Think not for an Asian!
Never too much rice! Especially here, their rice is so good! You guys will enjoy it! 🤙
We liked Bairin better but it might be because we had a bad experience here. We had a big party and felt like they kinda rushed us out.
It's better now that they take reservation, you have 1.5 hours until the next reservation comes in 👍
I don't know how you guys aren't 300+ pounds each! hahaha Another great review!
Dang tried to make reservation’s in June and they are all booked out….
Yeah… we had to book months in advance too!😅
Have you tried Ginza Bairin Tonkatsu?
We have but we still prefer tamafuji 🤤
Looks fantastic! Tried to get a reservation when we go in September but right now they are not taking reservations past July 29th? Hopefully just too far out or something - it looks amazing!
It might be too early.. maybe 2 months in advance? They do take reservations for sure 👍
oh no...I HAVE to eat here....I'm coming in another 13 days....no reservations
You can try walk in but no guarantees 😅
Hello Beautiful Amanda & Handsome Felix, you 2 always makes me Hungry, I wish I can Join you on your Mukbang..God Bless you both.. ❤ 🌼🌸🌻🌹💮🏵..
Mahalo Fred! 🤙
Many people consider this the best tonkatsu on Oahu, yet none of them mention Bairin. Have you tried Bairin?
Yes! Both are good but we prefer Tamafuji 🤙
Amanda pronounce it right "wors-ta-shire"
Me Wortahidchire aaaaaa nvm
😂
Ramen or chicken
Was pretty disappointed with this place tbh. Tonkatsu was tough and dry imo. Maybe just ended up there on a bad day :(
Personally I like Ginza Bairin better.
We had similar experience at bairin.. maybe just bad day 😕
worcestershire = woostersher, think east coast soft r's
Good to know!
Nah you guys are capppp! Ginza Bairin 😤😤😤😅
🤔 both are pretty good
