Aloha Amanda & Felix Another awesome eateries review. Fort Ruger Market, looks like a great place, I need to try their Hawaiian plate w/ day old poi or sour poi & fried chicken and Mac Salad. Their Poke looks so flavorful... That pork belly wow ! Leonard's Malasadas, Is my go-to place for Malasadas. Theirs other great Malasadas, on the island, but my taste buds have grown accustomed to Leonard's flavorings. Hope you have a chance to go back to Ruger Market to try their other food, & their iconic Boiled Peanuts love to see a review on those.
Yeah Ruger Market! They had nice sashimi platters in da day we special ordered. Thanks for providing the link to this video it didn't pop up in my feed 3 months back🤷♀️ Cinnamon sugar Malasadas & Haupia one are winnas.
Back in late 1979 to 1982 I would go to rainbow drive in on kapahulu street for the Hawaiian plate then go to Leonard’s for malasadas. Before that I used to go to the People’s cafe by long’s drugs on pali highway. People’s cafe had all kinds of hawaiian dishes. Food was so good. In California now and I miss the food badly.
My cousin's used to live just a few blocks from Leonard's. The guava one is my favorite from them! Also you should try the sunrise restaurant right on Herbert st.
i used to live on the east side but havnt been to ruger market in a very long time lol since the 70s-80s nice to see theyre still in bus it used to be like a mom n pop market that had great shoyu poke n hawaiian plates then we would head down to the beach
Hey guys thanks for your vids on Oahu eats. New subscriber here that ran into you two at Leonard’s that night. Nice to meet you two. My name is Kerry. I used some of your advice on places in Oahu so thx. Keep up the vids and I’ll try to watch them all.
I remember when I used to go ruger market WAY back to get the 1 lau lau 1 rice snack for $2.50!! I’d get 2 of those what a deal! I’m sure cost went up but it’s a gem out there for locals!!
Leanards malasadas is it!! Esp when fresh! Classic original n cinnamon sugar r my favs. Love iconic legendary eats!! Keep up the great foodie tours and keep on sharing! I love it and really appreciate it bc i miss home!! Mahalo!! Miss the food ppl n paradise! Poke looked amazing! 👍🏿
I would highly recommend San Nicolas in Kalihi they have the best Grinds such as Pinuck bet Dinah Dakan Etc they are famous for there Chicha Ron Buluck luk and Crispy fried pig ears…
We went there back in July but they were working on the building. So we only picked up mochi, icee and water. We hiked up Diamond head. We also went to the almost empty aquarium across the way.
Two years ago we rented a Airbnb in Waikiki and we would walk to Safeway for groceries and always stop at the bakery for donuts they were so good . Now I want some
I haven't been to Ruger Market in ages. My office at the time was a few blocks away. I would walk there at least once every other week to get a bento and boiled peanuts to take back to the office. Yùm!
We just tried the fried chicken and the fried pork belly. We didn’t realize it was just deep fried. There was no seasoning on either. And while it wasn’t bad, we were surprised and would have liked some seasoning. Definitely needed a sauce for dipping like a Thai sweet chili sauce. Otherwise, was good and cheap price.
Yo Felix! Just saw you walking the dog today but didn’t want to shout at you & freak your pooch out! 😂 Thank you & Amanda for all the great content! Keep up the great work! ❤️
Mid-morning couple months ago, Me! driving down Kapahulu, stopped in the middle of the road right in front of Leonard's took a picture of the line....counted over a hundred people lined-up waiting to order....WOW!!!
Really enjoyed this episode cuz it introduced us mainlanders to a place we wouldn't know that should be tried. The food looked like a good lunch stop for sure. Thank you for letting us in. Gonna try that crunchy fried chicken and poke for sure.
Oooooooooo…I could smell the poke….taste the laulau….and feel the crispy crunch of the chicken as you bit into it. And the malasadas? I enjoyed every bite with y’all.
That's sone Ono food from Fort Ruger Market never been there, always eat elsewhere usually Rainbow. Will add this to my future list. Always stop at Leonard's for Malasadas. Went to U.H. with a cousin of the owners, so we went there often. Great post. Mahalo and Aloha.
Leonards changed their recipe when the children took over ... the original malasadas was almost hallow in the middle...and so so yummy... when you hold it and bite it it flattened and you can't duplicate that. Wish they kept the original
Ruger Market! Original Hawaiian style poke! Gotta ask for the chili pepper water and throw it in! They also got the best mochiko chicken musubi! You lucky if you can get one. Mahalo Felix and Amanda for showing this gem. They’ve been forgotten it seems as the new spots opened up. Too bad that Japanese Italian place is gone on Monserrat. I went their with my Japanese friend and it was simple and ono!
Will have to try Fort Ruger Market! Such ono and og grindz. Now ono for boiled peanuts. Leonard's is legendary. When I think malasadas, I think Leonard's even though they have baked goods too. Definitely worth the wait!
Have not visited Ruger Market in years! Food still looks onolicious. Just wondered... have you ever brought malasadas on a plane to the West Coast? If so, how is that done? (how do you reheat?)
🥰Love Laulau! Always looked forward to it when we had it for lunch at school. Went to Mokapu Elementary in Kaneohe Bay many years ago when my brother was stationed in Hawaii.❤️ 👍🏼Leonard’s does have the best malasadas! I love the original and the custard filled. My husband loved the Dobash one.🥰 Thanks for sharing these yummy goodies and bringing back those memories.💕
So ono the food looked, especially the Hawaiian plate. I also have never tried the Guava malasada but I think I'm going to try it out on my next run to Leonard's. Thanks for highlighting Ft Ruger's. I always wondered where that name came from too!
Kapahulu YAY!!!!! Amanda local girl hood. Gimme that Felix Sushi bowl and no skimp on the fried chicken. Leonard's. What can you say? The malasada's are just that good. I love Kapahulu! Yeah its an older neighborhood and not a shiny penny and has some homeless here and there but I would love to live there.Trouble is all the great food like Rainbow et.al. I have a weight problem. Can't wait to eat! God bless and mahalo y'all!
You guys crack me up, if you’re in San Francisco give me a call, I’ll show you some delicious Filipino foods! Mahalo! 🤙😊 I’ll even cook the best pinakbet for you guys, I mix lechon kawali with my pinakbet! 😂
Hi Amanda and Felix, Love to see these local spots. Happy to keep the local home spots open. I have a random question for you Amanda. What lipstick did you use on the video. Love the color 😊. Well, have a wonderful day, continue with the awesome content and please give a snuggle kiss to Lucy!. 🐶
Obviously, if you go to Leonard's, you have to order malasadas. But what people often miss is that their other items are pretty good, too, like their brownies. I'm kind of a purist and don't really care for the puffs. Just plain or cinnamon are the best!
Love the Guava! We couldn’t decide what flavors we wanted so we ordered two dozen! We brought some to my daughter and her husband so we didn’t look like total pigs.🤣🤣🤣
Hi Amanda & Filex, Yes I'm from windward side but always stop there going to my Uncles & aunties at Kapiolani Manor, we always bought peanut icee dry aku poki before spending weekend there. Wow some Awsome memories.
Oh man guys! Everything looks so bomb 💣 super OG spot! And oooohghh the chicharon! I like to dip in spicy vinegar 🤤and the fried chicken OMG! My mouth is watering DAMN!

Mannn so much ʻono food packed into this video. Amanda, it brought me back as well to those days when I would get so excited to get musubi and icee at my local mini mart. Back in the late 80s and early 90s in use to buy Roost Turkey Tail from there‼️😋🤙🤙🤙
The next time you guys have a few beers and have some "chicharon" for pupu, make a dipping sauce of vinegar/shoyu/garlic. You won't be disappointed!😋
