Hope you enjoy the video! Please post your suggestions! :)
There it is! This song is one of my favourite Tool songs to jam to. Learning this properly, I've realised how wrong I was playing some parts. Glad I got some revision out of this.
- USEFUL INFORMATION -
Tuning: Drop D (D A D G B E)
318 (11:04): I've put the cheapest metal effect in front and added a treble booster for the high squeaky sounds

Let me grab my pen real quick... there we go! One of my favourite songs to jam to, playing this one since forever. I've verified my tab with _every resource_ I could find, it should be correct unless I missed something. For the squeaky solo I put a very aggressive distortion in front of the fully distorted Diezel profile and put some more treble onto it for the squeaks. Have fun jamming! \m/
Dude this soooo cool, I would love to see you do the patient!🤘🎸
@@ToologyTheOriginal Thank you! Would love to do that 🤘
Max Niessl Awesome!!!
Well done max. Utterly brilliant. This is the best one yet and let's face it that's a really difficult task as there all Fu king awesome !
Next let's see a song from undertow
My vote is for intolerance.
🤘🤘🤘
@@polatajkoful Thank you! Some Undertow would be awesome! Then I would have done one of every LP :D
without lost keys Rosetta stoned was like "Huh???? why he spittin nonsense" then u hear lost keys and yer like "ah thats why"
"overwhelmed as one would be..." goosebumps, every time in this part.
Definitely! Every time 🤘
Couldn't agree with you more here. That part is one of the "many" greatest Tool moments. The lyrics and the way Maynard sings the part is just golden.
In my opinion, this section of the song is peak musical perfection... Glad I’m not the only who gets goosebumps
@@bradfehr838 might be my favorite Tool climax of all time
Same I always rewind it a million times listening to it
Best bridge in existence indeed.
Damn you stole my exact comment, INDEED
Best bridge in existence followed by best breakdown in existence. The combination will make you *_s h i t t h e b e d_*
What would you mean by Bridge ?
@@darkySp The part that starts as "Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position..." Max Niessl notated the song's tab in that section as "Best Bridge in Existence". Just go up to that part and you'll see it
@@tommapar Ah, i missed that when i was watching it. I thought he meant the Polyrhythm section. Frankly, this song has like, 3 bridges. It always has some parts that deviate from the main "themes" of the song, if that makes sense.
We're basically watching Adam Jones play this song. Just awesome.
All he needs is Adam's Les Paul custom and long hair lol.
Yo I would love to see his gear even better know what pedals he uses for certain songs.
That riff at 6:09 melts my brain. It's one of the most confusing riffs I've ever heard
thats the what i love about TOOL though, their crazy polyrhythms
that spider riff is a nightmare for my forearm
What’s the spider riff?
@@santanaurias3112 9:48
The transition between keys and Rosetta gets me every time love playing these…
It's the Ace Ventura " alrighty then".
Incredible job. Easily my favorite off 10000 days. I feel like Adam Jones is our generations Alex Lifeson. So underrated because he's often overlooked because of their incredible rhythm section.
Another hugely successful underrated millionaire in a multi platinum selling band. Loads of em about.
@@DaveTaste lmao in the context of millionaire successful guitarists, of which there are (funnily enough) quite a few, Adam jones is underrated
If they ever remake 2001 A Space Odyssey Tool should do the music.
The movie would never come out though
@@cameronjackson9467 😂
lets just hope they never remake that movie
Cameron Jackson i mean, it WOULD come out, but it would be after 10+ years of fan hype and legal trouble, and when it comes out it would be met with polarizing reviews, with many agreeing that it doesn't live up to the expectations.
just speculating though
No
At 12:36 even you couldn't resist the soul of the song lol. I can't sit straight when playing this part it's too much
These two songs together are one of the most powerful pieces in history of progressive music.
I swear i will make a movie where the Lost Keys will be the opening song..but first i need to talk to Ari Aster to give me some cash.
Thanks
Haha hell yeah 🤘
12:25, best bridge in existence, you're goddamn right
9:48 "Spider Riff" :D I can see why it's called that.
You probably don’t care but this riff is twins with the Riff on H. I think that’s pretty cool!
Honestly, I love almost every tool songs, but for some reason Rosetta Stoned is always the one listen to first. From the beginning to the part where Dany Carey transforms the drum is insane. Great job man.
To me it’s the transition at 12:00 and forward ! Goosebumbs every damn time
Im not going to lie boys, but I’m so fuckin buzzed right now
SHIIIIT THE BED AGAAAAAAIN, TYPICAAAAAL
Timless
GOOSEBUMPS EVERYTIME
No Tims?
Im am here because Johnkew wrote in a comment that you did a good job on this cover.
He was right.
Haha thanks, appreciate it :)
That's big props! Johnkew is a wicked drummer!
I came to check this out because of that comment too. Plus I love the song!
same
That's crazy. I literally thought to myself that this guy and John Kew need to cover a Tool song together. Now, show someone show me a good Justin Chancellor cover of this song!
10:49 I don't think I'll ever get over that bass riff before the solo. The groove Im getting is just pefect.
Isn't it amazing that songs that were published a decade ago still get covered today and are still interesting
Most definitely! It is also amazing that you all _watch_ covers of said songs 🤘
If we're talking about us watching your videos 🙂 ... for me for example, when I see the music (being played), I can usually hear many new pieces and details I missed in the past, and it also makes me appreciate the song, or music even more.
Thank you for doing this 🙂🙏
6:14 187 Careful folks! I can see how this one took some time Max.
Best Tool’s cover man on youtube, enjoy!
The Best notification in my cellphone today
Aww
easily
Tool - H
What is easiest way to get that on phone to use as notification
So no one gonna talk about that badass bass riff
Very specific lol
Beautiful work Max! My 15 yo daughter watched it with me and she was blown away with your “spider riff”. We both had hand cramps afterwards 😂
Haha that's awesome! The playing, not the hand cramps of course ;) Thanks a lot and keep rockin' you two 🤘
Must remember to write it down........
sick profile picture, great movie
@@oliviaowen2862 a fucking classic
Damn this song is good. Every time I listen to it, every time I play it even, I find something new that I like about the intricate composition.
This song, at least for me, is the quintessential Tool song,. It has a bit of everything; polyrhythms and polymeters, odd time signatures, just downright epic sounding parts, fun guitar work, and to top it off, the lyrics are about a guy so high on DMT that ET appears to tell him the meaning of life and how to save mankind from itself but he forgot the fucking pen and subsequently shat the bed.
Typical.
This is one of my favorites. Sometimes I play my music out loud for my homeroom and they usually think it's cool but this one freaks them out and they think ita creepy somehow 😂
I feel you! 😂 the look on people's faces hearing the solo for the first time is priceless like "is this even music?!"
That outro with the 5 over 7 is crazy 🔥
You deserve billions of subscriber!
Somehow, after all the years of listening to Tool this song just kind of passed me by. It wasn't until Fear Inoculum came out last year that I went back and started relistening to their older albums again and while I know Opiate, Undertow and Aenima by heart and am quite familiar with Lateralus, 10000 Days was my least listened to of their albums so this song never got the proper attention it deserved. I'm making up for lost time now and I watch your cover of it more than I listen to the actual track.
Much love, man. Fantastic work.
It's never to late! Glad you enjoy my video of it so much, man! Much love🤘
"a message of Hope to those who choose to hear it and a warning to those who do not" gives me chills every time I hear it.
12:24
You're goddamn right--Walter White
You have reinvigorated my motivation to play again through these videos. Started cracking away at Jambi a few days ago. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for the work you do with these videos! I never realised how much I needed to get back into it.
That's awesome! Love hearing that, glad you are having fun! Keep rocking, great time to sit down and learn amidst this corona crisis 🤘
i always watch this before i do work at school as this music take stress off my day
Awesome! Tool is great to chill out :)
simple but tricky riffs..to only name one @ 8:35 . plenty of other riffs that will make you go cross-eyed. Thanks for this great vid, dude! Im having a blast with it.
"Holy fucking shit" is my reaction to this cover
great job once again Max, keep them coming
very well done as always
Finally! Incredible Max!
Amazing! Love your covers everytime!
Awesome! Great Job!
Thanks for putting this together, Max! 🤘
Incredible work! Goals right there

Yes dude keep this up!
Beautiful.
Literally brought tears to my eyes, good job man.
You’re effing amazing dude!
bro i cant thank you enough for all this
Love this song.
Great job 🎉
Amazing tone
I believe there is a song before this one that makes Lost Keyes and Rosetta Stoned a holy trinity.
thank youy for posting this proper version
man all i can say is thank you so much
Holy shit. This is one of the best covers I’ve ever seen of this song. Thanks for making my day
Voce é o brabo meu truta!
Putting an ad in the middle of this video is criminal, but still an excellent cover man
Sorry, I don’t have a choice about the ads. Only the copyright holders can decide that
holy smokes that was awesome
Thank you, man! I'm from Russia and i love Tool so much, you do the great job!
Awesome as always man!
Thank you 🤘
Your covers are probably the only I’ve seen that are actually played the way Adam plays it. Great fucking work man
Amazing.
Chills running up my spine as I smile and laugh and dance and sing your praise and glory while you make it look so easy
Thank you so much!! I love playing along with you. Great as always!
Thank you, Matt! Have fun :)
Amazing as always, Max - Thank you yet again :P
You're welcome! Thank you 🤘
Best interval ever!
Wow! Being a bassist, my ears have been trained over the years to focus on the bass line of this song. You’ve DEFINITELY given me reason to fully appreciate the guitar aspect of it, now! 💯🆒🎯
Great work dude, this is amazing!
Thanks, dude!
Awesome man!
Thank you! :)
Great work as usual Max, keep 'em coming! \m/
Thank you, Victor, as always! Will do \m/

Thank you! :)
EPIC mate, cheers!!!!
Thanks :)

man what a great job!! absolutely smashed it!
Thank you! :)
The most complex art of music a true masterpiece in itself
Impresionante! Genial! Maestro! Fuerte abrazo desde Bogotá Colombia!
Best bridge in existence indeed!
1) The quality of your playing and videos is real close to perfection.
2) You're pushing me clean through the walls that have been my final obstacles to total TOOL mastery. The last 90 seconds of Rosetta are an example - it gave me fits. Now I play it with ease. It was ironic having Maynard repeatedly growling "Don't know.....won't know" at me as I kept botching that insidious, wonderful polyrhythm. It was like he knew.
3) Your playing + the play along tabs are the greatest guitar resource I've found on YT. Axe of Creation is a super cool dude (with KILLER tone - check out his Jambi lesson) and has been a great help. Guitar Pro tabs have carried me a long way. You, however, knocked it out of the park and shattered a windshield or two in the parking lot.
4) Based on the difference you've made here, we actually drink an occasional toast to Max Neissl. We pronounce it KNEE-sul. I hope that's right. I'm a German American with an "-ei-" name and clods are constantly getting it wrong.
5) There are two things that ALWAYS make me laugh. One is Sling Blade saying "french fried potaters." The other is the orange slices and fetal spooning line from Rosetta. If that ain't sheer hilarity, there ain't no such thing.
6) The "But I forgot my my pen" thing might be the greatest sudden deflation in literary history. Poor dude. What a way to convey the crushing agony of being on the cusp of unimaginable knowledge and awareness, then having it yanked out from under you. This is Neil Peart-level lyrical mastery. Wow. Just wow.
7) In 2010 I caught Danny's autographed/drawn on tom head from the front row at Red Rocks. It was my birthday, too! Way, way too cool. My freakishly long arms finally paid off.
8) After tragically not caring about TOOL for the first 25 years of my rock and roll odyssey, my GF turned me on to The Grudge and created a monster. We've now seen TOOL 26 times all over North America.
9) I was underwhelmed by Fear Inoculum the first time I heard it. Now I consider it a candidate for the best album of all time. It may contain the most effort of any album, based on the interviews I've listened to. The boys came through big time in the daunting task of creating a worthy successor to the superb 10K Days.
10) I'm looking forward to seeing Wings/10K, Third Eye, Undertow, and Jambi tamed by you.
11) Your comments during the tabs are excellent. Best bridge in existence? Quite possibly. Your insight and attention to detail are exemplary.
Thanks, man. Seriously.....thanks a trillion.
TIP: If you hit SHIFT + comma/period, you can slow/speed up the video while KEEPING PITCH! That's a big help learning the trickier parts without having to use a pointing device and the settings menu.
This might be longest comment I've ever received, holy shit! I hope I can answer to everything you said :)
Thank you so much for your kindness, sir (and your girlfriend of course)! It feels so great to hear that those videos benefit people like you and that even those funny notes in the tabs get some appreciation... but a toast is next level haha, cheers 🥂
I know Greg from AxeOfCreation for very long and have learned some stuff from his channel back in the day. Really great dude and always enjoying his videos :)
My first guitar teacher "introduced" me to TOOL 12 years ago. But I've actually really started to attentively listen to TOOL about 6 years ago and have started to play the songs _correctly_ about a year ago. TOOL is the ultimate musical experience for me and I didn't want to ruin the music for myself by learning everything about it, if that makes sense :D
It's almost religious to me and that music got me through so much stuff in my life. Fear Inoculum definitely is one of the best records of the last decade, but I can't make the same connection to it emotionally as with Lateralus and Ænima. I'm not really sure why it's like that for me, but a huge point is that the lyrics in Fear Inoculum don't make me question life as Lateralus and Ænima did. And that's the most important part about TOOL to me. The music is outstanding, though, don't get me wrong here! The songs you mentioned are definitely songs I want to cover in the future :)
I hope I can see them live at some point in my life, very jealous here :D
Thank you so much for your support and stay awesome 🤘
Edit: The pronunciation is right by the way :D
Flawless! Well done, really enjoyed watching u play this! Keep on rockin'!
Thank you! Glad you did :)
Insomnia medication plays with my vision & movement so I didn't even notice it was a cover. I played it before passing out and it was a totally magical experience, I felt like I'm rediscovering the song and hearing stuff I've never heard before. Thx man.
Excellent playing, and very useful and helpful to have the tabs along, you're my choice to figure out any Tool song 🙂👍🏻
What an amazing cover!
The guitar part might seem simple but nothing is simple in a Tool song!
Good job dude!
Just how awesome things can be. Hell yeah, thanks for that cover!
You're welcome, dude! Thank you 🤘
All we can say is thank you, really are amazing!!!
Thank you :)
Your covers are legit
Amazing job!

Wow, great work!!happy to see another cover from you💪👌😁
Thank you, brother! 🤘

Great job! Thanks)))
Max i think at this point you should just cover every Tool song. So awesome man
thanks for these vids, bro.. you've helped out so much in quite a few songs
Appreciate it, glad I'm of help :)
Just saw them last month play this song. It was mind blowing. Big alien faces on the video screens was absolutely terrifying yet perfect. Now I’m trying to learn as much Adam riffs as I can. Thanks for the lessons.
So f@cking amazing, wonderful job dude
Thanks, bud! 🤘
Thank you so much! Ive been struggling with this fill section at 8:45 Seen so many ways to do it, but yours sounds spot on and just makes the most sense 🫶
From one Max to another, this is great stuff well done!
Thanks, Max! 🤘🏼
