- Guitar cover of "Pneuma" by TOOL with on-screen tabs - learned by ear.
Hope you enjoy the video! Please post your suggestions! :)
This definitely is my favourite song from the album. The mid-section gives me chills every time. And it still does after recording this cover for about 8 god damn hours - not many songs can do that for me :D
Either 7empest or Culling Voices will follow, depending on the time I have currently.
And I finally got around to configure some Diezel profiles on my Kemper. It's not a Diezel VH4, but a Diezel Hagen and I love it! :D
- USEFUL INFORMATION -
Tuning: Drop D (D A D G B E)
Tape Delay: 520ms
Tabs have been updated according to the corrections listed below!
25: This is being played on the low strings
54: Play only 2 notes on the low D string, the rest is delay. Similar to 96
49: You can play the C on the G string on the D string as well. Just more comfortable for me.
271: I used a flanger for the solo guitar here.
234: Same as 25
257: Played on the lower D string.
278: The solo seems to be played way higher up the fretboard.

Since the band has played this song live at the Aftershock festival, I updated the tabs accordingly. The links to the tabs are no different and are in the description below. Thanks for the heads up on the live appearance, guys! :)
I always wondered why you play 3 notes all the time through at 2:12. Even on the studio version, you only hear 2 notes, it's just changing up with 3 (audible) notes every other time. So I played 2 3,2,3 etc...
Thought it's a neat detail.
@@tobias5740 Yeah, I've noticed that pretty much after I released the video. Very annoying I didn't notice it earlier :D
@@MaxNiessl Haha. Well in other news I've yet to play most Fear Inoculum songs without your videos accompanying me :D It is even more fun to jam along together. Still afraid of 7empest though. Gonna tackle it a bit later.
Thanks for all your effort!
@@tobias5740 Haha thanks man! Keep jamming my dude! \m/
Happy to report the guys killed it in AZ last night...brought the house down when they played Intolerance (the massive intro jam on Undertow). Pneuma sounded incredible and Maynard’s vocals were on point!
I rate this cover 7/4
Why does this comment not have more likes??!
i think this rate 17/8
You sir, win UA-cam for that comment. Soooooo funny 👏
Aha... 😁
Unfortunately, the song wouldn't be seen as 7/4, even tho most people have transcribed it as 7/4. Have to think of the main riff as 14/8, because of the way the drum part is grouped.
Insane production for such a short amount of time
I thought you are talkin about tool x)
Tool is worth the cover.
Amazing job amazing song
Nah bro, If I achieved to get the exact same guitar sound of tool I wouldn’t stop using it 🤟🏻
Tool is known for trolling their fans, but I’m still wondering if it was on purpose that they made us wear T shirts that say TOOL on them
this is probably the most mindblown trolling ive ever heard. its so obvious i believe not many thought about it LOL amazing, i feel deceived actually ahah well played sir.
I'm wearing a Tool shirt right now and thought the same exact thing earlier.
Always thought it. Your the 1st I've heard someone other than me to say this. Needless to say i do not own 1 tool shirt, and their my favorite band of all time haha
Yes of course....we’re all tools. And I mean that in every sarcastic and metaphoric way you can think of 🤟🏼😉
I smell snowflakery among us....
The time signature changes are one thing, but all the subtle tempo changes...like wtf?
Danny didn’t play to a click track on 10,000 Days, so I assume it’s the same here. The subtle changes are just his natural time shifting slightly. He’s insane.
@@Meister_Dwight Yep exactly, he's a monster. It's also amazing how he "becomes a metronome" in the mid of most songs. When I sync the track to a click, I had to do almost no corrections tempo-wise in the middle o.o
That's wild, I had no idea. Just makes it even more impressive.
@@Meister_Dwight I think if you fluctuate THAT much, playing w/o a metronome stops being impressive and becomes unnecessarily cocky. Danny is technical, but he can't keep time for shit
@@lred1383 ever consider that it is intentional, hence them not wanting to use a digitized metronome? It sounds mechanical if you use a metronome. The way Dany does it makes it sound organic.
As a beginning guitarist, it’s really helpful to see the whole tab, the way you move across the fretboard, and all the other details you give; like the amount of delay and the song’s tuning all in one place. Thanks so much for posting videos like this, especially for some of my favorite bands like Tool and Opeth!
Hey Aaron, glad you are getting something out of my videos. Have fun learning 🤘🏼
Completely agree.
i've been playing for 4 years and this also helps me!
That outro solo is one of the most beautiful sounds ever. 💜
I agree. Gets me choked up every time. Just started being able to make it sound right when I play it.
I'm glad somebody feels how I do... I get emotional everytime I hear it
Me: Hi, what's the tempo for Pneuma?
Tool: Yes.
???
There’s no tempo changes at all
@@xxxtentioncable6813 Theres multiple if you watch the video.
I laughed so hard reading this looool
It was recorded without click
Don´t understand, why your cover at this time has only 5,7K likes and 222K views. This is absolutely perfect. Timing, feeling, sound, so professional. This deserves more and more views and likes. Over 1 million I hope...
Likes and views aren't a currency. Just enjoy it ya bellend.
Maybe the people who liked it have watched it multiple times?
You nailed it. Correct, complete, and the tone sounds equal to me. You deserve more views
Thank you! :)
3:22 it’s crazy how heavy this breakdown is for such simple chords
Pneuma is definitely my favourite off of Fear Innoculum.
Nothing I like more than smoking up and isolating the drums in my head. And then straight after listing to the track as a whole. Masterpiece in my opinion.
If only I didn't have to wait 13 years for it 😂
i thought i was the only one who really focused on the drums when i smoked it all to my head
@@guitarplayer1495 at least 2 of us then. Weirdly I can only isolate the different instruments properly when I've smoked. And Danny's drumming deserves a decent listen always.
@@munky342 weed is great man, brings us all together and makes life more enjoyable. music and weed goes so well together because you understand the instruments it's truly amazing
@@guitarplayer1495 miracle plant. Can't wait to get home and stick on an album to smoke to. Work gets in the way 😂

My man! Nailed it! Nice job! Also, nice to see Invincible is back up!
@WheelBite Oh shit, where?!? Max is the legend here, I know he didn't listen to the album until release day, so he learned this shit FAST.
@@CameronWinters Haha thank you so much, Cameron! Glad you enjoyed :) And yep, I disputed the claim on Invincible yesterday, so I hope SME doesn't kill it again :D
You two guys are in the running for the “Tool UA-cam cover wizard” title that used to belong to opiateofthemasses. You’ve picked up his mantle.
@@w_stew8912 JohnKewDrums needs to give us more danny carey and he will be right there with these monster artists
I’m going to be honest. When I first listened to the album I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be. I guess I was expecting old Tool. But as they grow so does their music. It’s really started to grow on me. I really dig it now.
That's great to hear! I was a bit shook by the album title track too, but it fits the album well as an intro track. And every song is a masterpiece, I really enjoy listening to CCTrip, too :)
The same for me
This record is unbelievable, and I’ve only listened to 3 songs so far 🤯
Ok let’s not go that far buddy... try not to cream your pants
Bro that's half of the album 🤣🤣🤣
Incredible. Those timings just mess with your head beyond belief. So cool to actually see how it's done!
Thanks! :) Oh hell yeah, the part at 4:00 fucked me over at least at 20 takes. It's so weird, but I love it :D
I think it’s more intuitive than it looks. I doubt they set about writing riffs in 15/8.
@@vahrzawofficialtracks It all has a structure, but I think the time signature should be accurate :)
@@vahrzawofficialtracks if its intuitive (which I agree with you, it prob it) its crazy they can have so many different rhythm changes happening in their head and actually pull it off. Love it.
Imo guys just jam a lot and are experienced in playing with time it seems necessary since they chose to limit themselves to Drop D
That little lick that starts at the 289th measure gets me every time.
My favorite from the album at the moment!
Goddamn that riff at 9:23 -- some serious vicarious vibes
Hell yeah! \m/
Max, I recently came upon your lesson. Please note I am 55 yrs old and have been playing rock guitar for many years. I remember before tab and before the internet and remember sitting and learning everything by ear. Your lessons provide a great great way of learning songs. Your method of the play along tab is awesome as it is incorporated with the ability to see you play along with the tab.. Keep it up you Rock!!!!
Hey Dave, I'm really glad you are enjoying my lessons! Feels amazing that this music unites people of every age. Have fun learning the songs and keep rockin'! :)
Synced guitar/synth tab (gp, gp5 and pdf) is in the description. Any feedback is much appreciated and corrections (or alternative ways to play) will be noted in the description, too :)
I'm a serious guitar player myself, I have a 1960 reissue Les Paul Classic 'Honeyburst' running thru my effects pedals into a Mesa Boogie Dual Rec. I had to go out and buy a Boss DD-7 to get Jones delays for 'Descending' and a few others. Especially for some parts for the album 'Aenima'. Great job by the way! Are you going to go for '7empest' soon?? Thanks
@@bradleybriscoe6108 That's dedication! Yes, I will. Just depends on the time I need :)
@@MaxNiessl very understandable Max! There are a plethora of killer riffs and tasty licks on 'Fear Inoculum'. Keep up the excellent work. Take care Max! 🤘🤘
Yeah sounds great. I miss my Gibson and my RP500
Max Niessl is the shit! Even has the synth and everything! Thank you sir, now I can learn Pneuma easier. No one else does this good at showing tabs while they cover a song. Super easy to learn from your videos. I can’t wait till you do 7empest. I hope it’s next....🤘👁
Perfect as always
Gawwwd dang that was NOICE! Well done my friend!!
This is amazing. Beautiful playing of one of my favorites from tool. Thanks man
Once again, brilliant work Max - thank you very much for this.
Thank you, you're welcome! :)
Dude...this is so good. Thank you for this :)
Glad you enjoyed, man! Thank you :)
Amazing job man! This video deserves more recognition.
I've been playing along to this none stop since I found it, I'd start on other Tool songs but loving this so much. Thanks Max for such incredible effort pulling these together, can't describe the satisfaction of playing along and how awesome it is to have the music, tab, annotations and seeing the playing too.
Been learning and playing along for a few hours now. It's so satisfying to play. Thanks for putting this out.
That's great! Have fun learning and thank you :)
flawless playthrough! excellent sound and appreciate the tabs

Dude this is amzing... great cover. I love how everyone is digging deeper into this album and figuring out the parts. This is my favorite song on the album also.
Thank you so much! :) Haha yes, it's so much fun to figure out those new ideas, really inspiring!
This is excellent work mate. Love it.
Great work mate, nailed it. Loving the colour on that LP too 🔥
The main riff is the best use of implied metric modulation I have ever heard. Danny is playing a 12/8 shuffle treating the dotted 8th note as a quarter note for the first half of the riff, making the song sound 50% slower. Then the snare hit in the second measure snaps the pulse into the "correct" tempo.
2 tempos at the same time. Tool never ceases to amaze.
Also nuts: at measure 96, Adam is playing as if the phrase is 7/4 - 5/8 - 7/4 and the downbeat is a quarter note earlier, but Danny is still playing it as 7/4 - 7/4 - 5/8 using the original downbeat. So the song not only has 2 simultaneous tempos, it has 2 simultaneous downbeats.
Damn, that’s impressively close to the actual tone! Great work and thanks for taking the time to do this and share it with us all!
Thanks man! :)
Perfectly played! Amazing how tight your playing is throughout such a long song.
Discovering this song has been life changing. I can’t get enough of it. The whole song is incredible but man that outro is so mean!
My favorite one too. Very well done sir.
Thanks! :)
Was literally hoping you would do this one. Best song imo.
Yes, it's my favourite song as well! :)
Glad I stumbled across your channel, make it all look so effortless! Bravo
Absolutely incredible! Nice playing. Thought this was going to take longer than a weekend.
Thank you! :)
Your use of syncing tabs is a very nice touch to your covers, and you've done an excellent job of tone matching. Both you and Cameron do really good covers!
Thank you! And yes, Cameron's covers are awesome! :)
Dude you nailed this. So impressive
Nice work! Beautifully done.
Top 5 tool song in my book.
Again, so dope what you're doing man. Great video.
Thank you \m/
I remember when aenima came out, I learned the whole album the first weekend. Not many tabs then. Now I can sit back and watch y'all jam them. Adams style is easy once you get a few tunes down. Tool was a good mystery back then. Not many photos or interviews before lateralus. Thats what was cool about them. Cool color on the les paul.
I wish I were ready to listen to Tool at those times. I discovered Tool only after 10.000 days, but the mystery was still there. Love that about Tool, they are just doing there thing and don't give a damn what everybody else thinks :D
I joined the Tool army after The Pot became a huge success) I remember feeling a mix of inspired and scared.
Been looking all over for decent tabs for this. What a fucking great album this is. Also have to say this is incredibly well put together. Thanks for your services mate.
Well done max awesome job!!!

After a few hours of leaning i can agree - this is incredible song. Thanks for giving me an opportunity to learn it!
This switch on 3:54 is awesome! :D

So killer!! Nice work dude
Nicely done! Thank you for putting this up.!
All I know is watching Max and Cameron’s channels is I can gain a full appreciation for the work Adam Jones does. The subtleties and flair he brings, I hear it but seeing it is so much better. I don’t even play an instrument but IMO Adam does his best work on Fear Inoculum.
This track and 7empest are the highlights for me on an epic album. Cheers guys for doing amazing work on your covers.
That's awesome to hear, thanks man! Very glad you like it :)
Adam does outstanding work on this record. And I agree on those two tracks, but I find that Culling Voices is somehow getting lost in the mix, even though it's an amazing piece :)
Who is the Cameron?
@@denisblack9897 Cameron Winters. He has quite a few Tool guitar covers uploaded. Looks like he hasn’t been posting for awhile, however his page is terrific and also some incredible covers of Tool.

Love the profile! Nice work man
Seriously man, amazing channel! I can't imagine the amount of work it takes to record and sync, edit even one video. Sounds great too.
I'm totally addicted to the new album it's a masterpiece.
I think I'm a fairly good player when it comes to rock and blues. Somehow Tool tracks I shy away from because I just can't count the time signatures. This has inspired me to have a go, I'll probably just have to feel my way through but I just have a feeling 'I have to learn this!'
Keep up the good work, I saw tool in Amsterdam in July and a perfect circle twice in London last 2 years. Can't get enough!
Great content thanks ! 😃
Thank you so much! Really glad my videos motivate you, keep going :)
Just started this tonight, that rhythm in the verse with the delay is messing with me 😅 I can play it and it sounds good but I can't quite nail the rhythm.... Yet
best song on the new album in my opinion, played very well!
I agree and thank you :)
Magnificent rendition Sir
Very nice job man. It sound incredible
this is good man!
And what just hit me, is that even the synth solo sounds completely Adam Jones :) it's just the way he would play it on guitar as well/
Very well done!
Yes, I love the synth on this track! And thank you :)
Is is Adam or Dany playing the synth? Usually at live shows its Dany or maynard playing them.
@@adamp2056 Literally can't tell at this point since we don't have live performances, yet. But Adam plays synth as well and Danny is busy playing the drums :D

Aww thanks, man! :)
This is my favourite song of the album, has been since I saw them live Feb 2020, I really envy you being able to play this.
Now listen here, I am (probably as everyone around here) a gigantic Tool fan and I've been waiting for the exact moment for the album to come out. As I listened it, I fell in love with all the songs, but with this one, the most. I typed in to see are there any covers yet and to be honest, a very pleasant surprise waited for me! You, my brother, are so underrated, you deserve a million times more subscribers than this, you have an enormous talent which everyone should appreciate! Well done on covering the song, I personally think it's the hardest one to play on the album. How long did it take you to learn it and how long have you been playing overall? I've been playing guitar for 2 years, and about a year ago I learned all the songs from Lateralus and 10,000 days. But this one looks so hard because of the time signatures, but I will sure do my best to try and learn it. Once more, thanks for this video and all the other ones you make, much love and respect!!!
Holy shit, dude, thank you so much for your kind words! So sweet waking up to comments like yours :) I've been playing guitar for about 10 years now (started at 11) and my first guitar teacher introduced me to Tool with Vicarious and Lateralus. Immediately got hooked, but listened only sporadically until I was like 15. Then the obsession began, as I bought their albums one after the other. They are my constant source of peacefulness and happiness in this world :)
Pneuma took me friday evening to tab it out, synced a click to it at Saturday morning and recorded from 1 PM to 9 PM to get that perfect take. Was a bit ill that day so I've gone through many bad takes and stages of disappointment xD It's still my favourite so! :)
So keep at it bro, awesome to see people learning Tool songs in 2019 and appreciating their amazing masterpieces! Spiral out, keep going... :)
All the best for you brother ❤
