Love watching these box building videos. They are a prime example to show customers how much work actually goes into building a subwoofer box. In my shop people aways ask me "why so much"& "it's just a box why do you charge so much" and my favorite question "does the box even make it sound better" and all of these are great questions to ask a installer. As a installer I bought a eBay special $45 box for a single 12. And I built a box for a single 12. (Rockford fosgate p1) both boxes use that woofer. That way when people tell me it's just a box and it makes no difference on how the speaker(s) sound I show them a example of why you need a custom box built for your exact subwoofer.

I'm new to bandpass boxes but I have been researching 4th order enclosures today. Couple questions:
    * Why did you do double wall speaker walls?
    * Why did you use such a large port diameter? The larger the port diameter the longer the port has to be.
    * What is the air space requirement for the front chambers of the speakers? Doesn't look like much.

I plan on a center port with a similar box. I have my pass through the trunk and the armrest is removable but is still functional.
After watching you load that one into the trunk I'm inspired to build it in the trunk. That was a job in itself.

Nice build... from a construction standpoint if you want to add rigidity to a box like that rather than drilling into endgrain you can cut a dado in the top and bottom pieces to receive the vertical pieces. You could use biscuits for alignment and a 1x1 firring strip down the side of each panel to screw into from both sides so you avoid endgrain.

Nice video. I haven't built a sub box in about 13 years. I use to have 3 12's JL Audio W6's and I made a sealed box for them. Each sub had it's own chamber. The one important thing you want to do first is take measurements of the inside of your trunk. This of course is to make sure your box will fit in perfectly. The last thing you want is a box that's too big for your trunk. Take in consideration the trunk lid/door hinges and trunk hatch cylinders. They can get in the way when closing the trunk.

Hey Exo, getting ready to do a 4th order build in a month or 2. I have 2 questions.
    1. Is it better to have the speakers in the same space in the sealed section or have a wall in the center separating the 2. A wall would add support from flexing, and maybe sound/work better?
    2. Square or circle port? My first enclosures where square and they where more vibrate, if that makes any sense. where my circle port was more blaaarrrhh! Which from what ive read as long as there tuned the same shouldnt make a difference, the difference between the square and circle ported enclosures i made is the circle was not sectioned, each speaker could see each other, all sharing the same air. Whereas the square ported boxes where like your standard ported boxes each having there own ported compartment. So this kinda plays into the first question, would a wall in the center, separating my 4 12s, add to the vibrating? Ive done a ton of searching and i cant find answers. Thankyou!

I know this is an old video but Baltic Birch is what people want for boxes. It's considered void free for less chance of rattles and buzzing. The stuff you bought is Baltic outer layer with a Fir core. Not a whole lot better than regular plywood. Baltic Birch is currently about $70-80 a sheet.

My subs, one so far, it's foam has dry rot, I thought my plywood cabinet was rattling at first, the HE2's are about 10 years old, wish I had inspected them closer before putting them under the bed in my van, I am gonna have a hell of a time getting them out, have to redesign my bed to make it possible to get access to them later. Yo EXO got a question. Whats the air space volime for the Meso 12s? Their websight says 1.5 cubic feet after displacement but for some reason in a box built to these specs they sound muddy and not crisp. I'm upgrading from Skar EVL 12s and they sounded way better but also each EVL had 2 cubic feet air volume. I messaged CT Sounds mulitlpe times asking this same thing but they never reply back. Thanks for your time and help bro.

  • @Supercharged1976

Okay, so the face plate...wouldn't you want to use like a weather stripping round the open to ensure an air tight seal? I know tightening down the bolts in their pattern probably seals it up nice but is it 100% air tight? Not ragging or trying to be a know-it-all just curious as I've never built a 4th order before.

The subwoofer is a fi sp4 18 v2.1 dual 2 and im going to be running it on a taramps smart 3k at 1 ohm with a 350 amp alternator and 40 ah lto lithium battery. The chambers are pretty close to 1 to 1 with the sealed chamber being 3.60 cubic feet net and 4.43 net ported to 40 hz. Im hoping for at least a 140 to 142 db at a burp.

Nice setup, guess that's why you're going to Goodwill for a shirt.
Seems Bandpass is once again slowly making a comeback. It's a lot of work to do just for something you'll probably swap out next year if that long Exo.
Although I don't get the fascination of having a 200 lb+ loaded enclosure that takes up the entire rear space of a vehicle and lower gas mileage just to have more bass. I think the point of subs is to complete the music, not to over accentuate it.

I am wondering if a single 15" could sound as good or better on the 300 rms?

All that drilling and countersinking you've done in just this video alone, you should go to your local Lowes, Home Depot, etc and pick up a set of Dewalt high speed rapid load quick change countersink bits (Dewalt part # DW2535). I also use a Dewalt rapid load quick change chuck in my drill. I payed 25 bucks for that set, seems high for 3 drill bits but they have lasted me 3 years now with out dulling etc. Once you use them 25 is WELL worth the money. I bought them for installing kitchen cabinets but I've used them on box builds, my back porch, rebuilding my house, I mean just about anything that involves putting screws in it lol.

The fact that you've made a sequel out of this surely means that you're gonna build a nasty 6th order? :D

How should you put your subs in the box should the back of the sub be with the ports or the front of the sub with the ports

Awesome vid, much respect. If I were to build a 4th order. How do I calculate the the volume of the sealed portion the woofer plays in? In this case u have the woofer firing into the sealed area. If I were to mount the woofer facing each other. Hope I make sense?

    • @camaroboi13
      @camaroboi13 6 років тому

Late reply but the sealed portion should be very close to manufacture specs. Example, if the manufacturer recommends a sealed box be 1 cubic foot, then you build a cubic foot sealed chamber for each of your subwoofers. Seems like lots of people go 2:1 ratio for musical, meaning 2 cubic feet ported for 1 cubic foot sealed. Generally, the higher the ported size, the lower the bass will be. Hope this helps.

Thanks for building this, I've been kicking around the idea of doing a 4th order box for my box body suburban.

    Exo Hi
I have two ground zero gzca 5k amplifiers at 1 ohm giving 5600 at 14 volts and at 2 ohms giving 2800 my subwoofers are gzhw15 spl dual 1 ohm but I actually tested them are dual 1.4 ohms so final resistance or 0.7 for every two subwoofers or 2.8 ohms these amplifiers are manufactured In Brazil is there a problem running them on 0.7 ohms and what should I do so that no damage happens to the amplifiers and if not who has a method to run the subs on 1 ohms thank you all
