I saw this film with my brother and sister and it blew me away!
I enjoyed this movie and forgot how fun it really is!
I'd probably double that 75 million to include advertising because back then I remember the trailers everywhere on TV.

Shame the sequel sucked.
"We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!" That deliverance gives me goosebumps every time.
The existence of Area 51 wasn't confirmed officially until just a few years ago. At the time this movie was made, they had the military all lined up for help with filming, but the DoD wanted them to omit the references to Area 51 (even though just about everyone already believed it to be a real thing by then) and the producers refused, so the military pulled out of the deal.
In 1994 there was a lawsuit by some workers from area 51 over exposure to toxic chemicals, resulting in an executive order exempting the base from environmental disclosure laws in order to stop the lawsuit from being able to go forward, which was the only acknowledgement that something unusual was going on out there until 2013, when he CIA acknowledged area 51's existence in an official history of the development of the U-2 spy plane.
What often goes unnoticed is all of the homages made to sci-fi of the past. The "Good Morning Dave" from 2001, the nuclear blast aftermath from the original "War of the Worlds" and that last scene of the guys walking out of the desert is right out of the ending of "The Right Stuff". Those little added things took it to an even higher level for me.
"Stop side-seat driving!" Cracks me up every time.
Among the deleted scenes are scenes that show Russell Casse being rejected from flying a fighter jet because he's drunk, and when they run out of missiles, he shows up in his crop duster biplane with a missile strapped to it already knowing that he'll have to ram the alien weapon to stop it. Fortunately, the filmmakers realized that it looked laughably silly to have the biplane keeping pace with the F-18s that were "plowing the road" ahead of him. Also the final version had that added emotional impact of seeing Russell make the decision to sacrifice himself as he looks at the photo of his children.

That audio distortion you add really did a number on Harvey Fierstein's voice. Had me go between being creeped out and laughing so hard 😂

This movie has a special place in my heart as it was the first movie I saw in theaters after graduating from the Navy's Basic Training in June of 96. I was 25 years old at the time. Such an amazing movie and I loved the characters.

This was such a big movie back in the day, I remember everyone in school talking about it. The huge lines at the movie theater to go see it. It’s one of my favorites. Fun fact, that beautiful white sand lake is actually pretty stinky because it has hundreds of dead shrimp, so when Will Smith complaints about the smell, that line was not in the script, he really was annoyed about the horrendous smells coming from the place.
Can we all just take a moment and take notice of how stunningly gorgeous she is in that flag dress? Dayum! I was barely able to finish enjoying her movie reaction 😘

This movie is a modern update of another movie based on the H G Wells book the War of the Worlds in which martians invade earth and are defeated by a biological virus rather than a computer virus. This movie also references classic movies such as 2001 Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the third kind and ET

It's muted, but at 39:24 you hear Goldblum ad-lib "Faster. Must go faster." This was a nod to _Jurassic Park_ in which Goldblum says the exact same line.
Area-51 became well known in the 1990s thanks to shows like Unsolved Mysteries, The X-Files and Seven Days and a late night radio show called Coast to Coast AM that was hosted by the late Art Bell.

Julius Levinson is the best character in this movie. Imagine the anti-maskers dealing with being told not to go hang out under the giant alien spacecraft's primary weapon.
The scientist with glasses and long hair at Area 51 is actually Data from Ster Trek. I had no idea until someone pointed that out to me. Crazy.
Fact: before appearing as the dad of Jeff Goldblum in this movie Judd Hirsch was in the tv series of taxi and I recommend you to check it out.

Like others have said, this movie destroyed at the box office. It was amazing! Plus, it came out Independence Day weekend back in `96, so it gave you that "this is happening RIGHT NOW" feel. The sequel... was not as good :D. May be a good "bad" movie to react to. Also, BATTLE: LOS ANGELES, which portrays an alien invasion ground war, goes VERY well with this movie, and I think of THAT as an unofficial sequel.
I remember being 7 and the first time i saw the fox promo where they made it seem like a actual news broadcast made me freak out!!!

"What the Hell is that smell?!" It's actually the way the Bonneville Salt flats smell because of its proximity the the Great Salt Lake (all the dead brine shrimp).
Only thing I know about the Bonneville Salt Flats is where land speed records usually go to die.
Steve told Jasmine to go to El Toro base. That's why he went there to look for her, and why she went there to look for him. As for age, they thought Tom was too young and inexperienced to be president.

I really love this movie for real. The very first time I saw this movie was at the movie theaters with my Mom, my Dad and my Grandmother when I was only 19 years old.

Independence Day was the highest grossing movie of the 1990s ($800+ Million) until it was surpassed by Titanic ($1 Billion+) a year and a half later.
I watched this movie 3 times at the cinema back in the day. First time I watched it with a friend we were cheering and everything. Huge hit back in the day and still holds up well today.

One note. When this movie came out, we just went through a bunch of movies and shows, from ET to V the visitors, where either aliens were good/misunderstood, or they played nice and fooled us, then tried to take over. I remember this movie really surprising us with them just showing up and attacking, no contact, no false negotiations, just boom!

I love ID4 as it is also called. There are three other films by Roland Emmerich I wholeheartedly recommend:Stargate with James Spader and Kurt Russell, The Patriot with Mel Gibson, and Anonymous with Rhys Ifans...the last two are historical dramas...one during the American Revolution and the other during Elizabethan times about William Shakespeare and whether or not he actually wrote the plays. Loved the reaction...as always!!! 😊😊😊
I discovered just recently that The Patriot was actually based on an actual historical figure. In the movie, Mel Gibson plays the character Benjamin Martin. When in fact that character was based off of Francis Marion’s actual self. I discovered this fact when I was watching the short t.v. series “Legend and Lies: The Patriot Francis Marion.” It fits that character to the tee with the exception that it wasn’t his son that died but his nephew that he cared deeply for. It’s a great series that dispels some facts from factious things we were told, led to believe, or they conveniently left out.
In case you haven’t seen it. Legend and Lies The Patriot is the second season of that series.

Ex-Military ⚓️ & The one thing that stands out is when they swoop down & attack the Air Base there's quite a few people wandering around & jets sitting out. I guarantee you, at time of Active War that base is under🚨Red Alert🚨& NO ONE is 'wandering around', & all jets are put away or in the air. 🛫 Midway island was better prepared for incoming Japanese 70 years ago than that base was for an incoming enemy attack. We're much better prepared than what was shown. That is all...

One of my favorite films of alltime Top 3 no doubt. I am indeed a believer of alien life out there somewhere in the universe and i do believe they have been visiting our planet for thousands of years now whether they are benevolent or malevolent is anyones guess. But either way if they have the ability to travel to our planet at will and we cant even go past our moon if they were hostile there is absolutely nothing we could do to stop them. We would be completely helpless. That's scary to even think about it.
