at 8:10 I can name a reason why aliens would pick a fight with us, it's because we're dangerous, we constantly wage war with each other and at the same time kill our planet, if we got past our solar system we would surely kill anything that isn't us under the pretense of protecting ourselves, so it's it would be better if someone got us how we are now instead of waiting until it's to late
the studios didn't want Will Smith in this, because they didn't think black men are 'bankable', but Emmerich persisted and it became Smith's first blockbuster movie
There's a deleted scene that explains they were able to create the virus because modern PC's were created based on designs from the alien ship's computers at area 51
I think they just assumed that people would draw the logical conclusion that the jump in electronics development we experienced in the late 40's/early 50's was a result of reverse-engineering the crashed spacecraft's systems, it's a common trope in scifi.
I like the bit where George says “we don’t declare war on ants”. It’s true, if there’s an anthill in the way we just roll right over it, or exterminate it. It’s not a war, we barely even register it as a conscious act at all. Now ask the ants what just happened to them.
He wasn't in Mars Attacks or either of the Jurassic Parks, though. (I guess what happened with that was, if you aren't in Independance Day you where in Mars Attacks, or vice-versa)
Haha I'm glad. I've seen other non-US viewers get angry at the (very silly) nationalism of that speech, which I really don't get - the whole speech is about how the victory of the united world against the aliens is more important than the American holiday! But with a little tie-in American history to get the troops going :)
Rewatching this movie its so apparent that the actors and characters make this movie the classic that it is. The plot is basic, there's plenty of things you have to blindly accept, script is okay, but from Bills speech to Jeff's nerdy sarcasm to Wills insane charisma it's hard to replicate. The entire cast seemed to have great chemistry with everyone and great performances all around. Perfect popcorn movie
Stargate would ge a great choice after this from that time period in movies as well as also similar producers ... plus for more destruction, check out 2012.
This is the first movie where I've been legitimately invested in an American president as a character XD This guy embodies everything I wanna see in a leader; composure, assertiveness, diplomacy, compassion, determination... and COURAGE. Bro genuinely LEAD the strikes against the aliens at the front lines, like George Washington did against the British. Sheer badass
I love at 23:10 Simone immediately recognized the trope: "is it going to be like 'bump' to the glass?" When I saw this in the theater, everyone was dead silent at that moment, and we all knew what was coming.... when it happened one lady in the theater let out this giant scream and then everyone laughed.
14:48 “They really hate landmarks” 😂😂😂 I’ve never commented on you guys videos before but you’ve got some amazing banter and I love that. Thank you so much keep doing what you’re doing. You guys reaction to Joe Joe rabbit had me in tears as well you’re great
@@alexsmith3832 Worst sequel ever made. Anyway, Independence Day pretty much made the landmarks get destroyed disaster movie trope. It had been done before, but never to this extent.
Love this movie, so glad to see it through fresh eyes. The presidents speech is one of the best movie speeches I have ever heard and gives me goosebumps.
Some films really get a benefit from the big screen experience and this is one of them. Also Bill Pullman really nailed that presidential speech scene great acting.

Big screen, well equipped with the sound, and a matinee full packed of people for the noisy crowd's reactions. 💪🏾
@Kristopher Chavez from memory, the 'Independence Day' speech is in iambic pentameter. It's a homage to the 'Saint Crispin's Day' speech by Shakespeare in 'Henry the Fifth'. It's a literary technique that Shakespeare commonly used - all the characters speak in everyday prose but the noble leader gives a rousing speech in poetry. There is frequently a lot more going on in a Roland Emmerich movie than big explosions.
There's a deleted scene explaining how they synthesized the computer virus basically it involves the technology the aliens left behind in the original roswell crash don't know why they left it out, makes the sequence much more confusing
@TheJoeGreene, Whoa. Where were did you live back then? I was 12 in 1996 and all my friends had computers and the web was gaining popularity. My brother started in polytechnic that year and I remember sometimes going there with him in the late evenings because they had fast internet connection there. We only had a dial-up internet access at home back then.
I worked at a theater that summer. It was rough. I had to build 6 prints of this film so we could run them through two projectors ear and have 12 simultaneous showings. It was crazy. Such a busy summer with big Hollywood films. This is probably the best description of a "Popcorn Movie". Light humor, fun, action packed, dogs jumping away from fire like the Millennium Falcon escaping the second DeathStar.
@neutrino78x I didn't mind the builds, but I sure hated moving large platters when mgmt would decide to "maximize seating" by moving the Family Friendly/Kids films to the big theaters for the mornings/afternoons then swap them again for the evenings (someone dropped a pring of Goldeneye down the stairs like that...luckily it wasnt me). As a viewer, I used to love digital since you could watch it opening night or 3 months in and it would look/sound the same. But now that even Theatrical Only releases are so short it doesnt seem to matter.
Simone's reaction to the first attack and destruction scene was was so honest and harrowing. However, you have to understand something. When this movie came out in theaters no one had seen anything like it before. Imagine seeing landmark buildings like The White House, The Empire State Building and The Capitol being obliterated like that 14 feet tall. Simone was freaking out watching it on her computer monitor.
Saw this in the theater back in 96....sat thru most of the movie with my jaw hanging open....it wasn't Star Wars for 1977 but it was truly something different and unlike anything I'd ever seen at the time. All in all it still holds up pretty well considering its been 25 years. And on a side note...Lt. Commander Data is the man ;- )
I saw it 1 1/2 times on opening day. 1/2 because the first time was cut short due to a fire alarm. It went off right as A51 was being attacked and nobody moved because we all thought the alarm was part of the scene. It wasn't until they stopped the movie and turned on the lights that we realized it was an actual alarm.
I love the back-and-forth between Jeff Goldblum and Judd Hirsch. Absolutely wonderful. And yes, the scenes of the alien ships destroying so many landmarks are incredible. The work it took for the shot compositing and modelwork must have been staggering.
Regarding the earth-born virus affecting the spaceships, supposedly there was a scene cut out explaining that, because of the captured ship housed at Area 51, all our computer technology was reverse-engineered from it and therefore susceptible to the virus. Makes sense, not sure why they left it out.
The extended edition added some good scenes (like that one mentioned) but other ones mess with the pacing. Especially in the first “act” the lack of any background score in the scenes interrupts the flow
Goldblum aside, the only good thing about Independence Day 2 is its role in comparatively making the original look like more of a masterpiece than it already is.
Please react to the Wil Smith movie "Enemy of the State" with Gene Hackman , it is a classic and foreshadows much of current events. Thanks for the reaction to Independence Day.
I want to see a remake of Enemy of the State that ends in 10 minutes because the NSA just looks up his FB page and rips the location data from the app.
Back in the day I considered it the most important movie of all time - before a certain day in 2001, when everyone suddenly started cheering in lockstep... (it was about 95% accurate for its time, don't ask me how I know)
To clarify: independence day and thanksgiving are dependent based on the family how big of a deal they are, but CHRISTMAS is WAAYYYY in the lead. Such a massive holiday here in the U.S.
In general I think in order the top 3 US specific holidays are Thanksgiving, Independence Day, and Memorial Day. Christmas and Easter are not specifically US holidays.
Yes, Thanksgiving is way bigger. They are many people that do nothing for independence day. We just like the day off. Lol! But damn near everybody either has their own Thanksgiving dinner or they go somewhere for Thanksgiving dinner.
Yeah fireworks are fun but it's just a 1 night thing. Maybe a couple times in your life you might travel for Independence Day to go to DC or something, but very rare. Thanksgiving travel is omnipresent, and worse than the holidays which are more spread out, yet people do it anyway.. If you're not from a Christian background obviously Christmas isn't too relevant - I'd say that's the one that depends more on family. In my family Christmas was on par with Thanksgiving for awhile, but as presents became less important with the kids grown up, Thanksgiving felt more relevant. We also tended to have more big events at Thanksgiving by doing dinner with family friends, but not so much at Christmas.
Independence Day is the more communal holiday were everyone does things together (parades, outdoor activities, fireworks) while Thanksgiving is probably bigger, but more private as it's with families rather than crowds.
Simone commented on the miniatures. I believe the White House miniature took about six months to build, and they could blow it up...once. They had only one chance to get the shot. Keep in mind this is before 3D printers and everything had to be crafted by hand.
@DouglasJohnson Also to add after seeing a video on Tiktok, this films holds the record for the most miniatures in the film with each city being destroyed and the Air Force base.
Simone "gets it". That was my reaction during the destruction scenes, and I suspect many people's reactions. This was one of the first (or maybe even THE first) movie to really, I mean REALLY show the destruction of famous landmark buildings and monuments that represent America. I saw this in the theaters with my dad, and my little brother as young teenagers. And lemme tell ya, as a SoCal native, I can't tell you how unnerving (and cool!) it was seeing that first building blow up. Like, that's my downtown, yo!
@@MichaelScheele At the same time, while _Avengers_ didn't show specific buildings blowing up, it did absolutely wreck NYC overall, and that's obviously incredibly popular. Definitely there was a sensitivity period after 9/11, but I wouldn't say it changed how we look at urban destruction forever or anything like that. It will always be a possibility in a certain kind of blockbuster.
(now if you for some reason were setting a movie before 2001 and wanted to show the twin towers themselves getting blown up by aliens, THAT would get some negative attention...)
The best thing about this movie is that there's an alternative ending where Randy Quaid's character blows up the ship with his cropduster bi-plane. The second best thing is that if you've followed Randy Quaid's real life descent into insanity for the last few years and then watch this film again you have to wonder whether he was acting at all.
The cropduster scene was in early prints shown to test audiences, and they didn't like the ending, with Russel in the biplane. So Emerich went back and filmed some new scenes with Russel getting sober and flying a Hornet instead of his biplane.
One of the best movie theatre experiences ever. Loved that Simone got goosebumps at the President's speech. The whole theatre erupted in applause and cheers. This speech and William Wallace's speech in Braveheart - still my 2 favorite rallying speeches in movie history.
I really recommend having both of you guys in the thumbnail. When people look for new reactions they enjoy it more when it's two or more people reaction. The thumbnails makes new viewers think there's just one
I'll second this only as a curiosity that everyone should see at least once. Overall it is NOT a good movie, though it does have a few sporadic moments of pitch black humor. And honestly it's kind of amazing to watch a Tim Burton movie with a star-studded cast go so horribly wrong. 👍🏼
I love how you guys laughed at all the good jokes and loved the movie immediately on first viewing. I felt the same way in 1996, I left the theater thinking it was one of the best sci-fi movies of the last twenty years. Over the years my opinion hasn't changed; it's the best sci-fi movie of the 1990s. 3:17 FYI: That's Dean Devlin, one of the writers of the film. 10:08 Per Google Maps - from Manhattan to the White House is 3 hours 48 minutes. But in my experience, that's a little low; it's probably more like 4.5 to 5 hours. 10:32 FYI: That's Harry Connick Jr. 12:22 Per Louie De Palma (of Taxi, Judd Hirsch's great 70s-80s TV show): A shlameel is a guy who goes to a formal dinner party and spills his soup. A shlemozel's the guy he spills it on. 14:47 That's a line from the sequel, Independence Day Resurgence; you obviously saw the trailers for that one, even if you haven't seen the movie. 19:03 "And what the hell is that smell!?" was unscripted. The salt flats in Utah where they filmed the scene have brine shrimp that die and stink somethin' awful, and nobody had warned Will Smith about it in advance. 19:41 I saw this movie in the theater in 1996 (and I remember the TREMENDOUS response, everybody LOVED it!), but I never heard anyone mention that idea, that the invasions might be a response to us capturing one of theirs at Roswell. That could have made for a very interesting film. 22:20 Trivia: There were two completely different alien designs created by the art department, and Roland Emerich loved them both, so the script was changed to make one design the aliens, and the other design was the "biometric suits" that they wore. 25:47 Yup, most people in the theater in 1996 assumed that bio weapons would be the answer, since that was how the aliens were defeated in War of the Worlds - they had no resistance to Earthly bacterial and viral diseases. 28:31 That speech was considered highly inspiring in 1996, but over the years people have gradually moved more and more to the opinion that it was cheesey, insipid, contrived, and stupid. Personally, I love the speech and think it was inspiring and maybe even just a touch realistic. 29:59 Maybe their telepathy only works at short ranges. They use radio signals to coordinate their attack, so telepathy can't do everything for them. 34:58 FYI - There are no more Will Smith/Jeff Goldblum movies. But I wish there were. 36:04 They built huge models of the major city streets and landmarks in NYC, LA, and DC, and blew them up for the scenes. But they augmented those scenes with CGI. 36:34 Yup, there's a sequel. Don't waste your time.
As an old guy, I can tell you that Jeff is 100% correct. Windows 95 had an alien interface function. I don't know why they got rid of it, but I am sure it has something to do with market relevance.
Iconic. One of my favorite movies. There are so many iconic moments. Will and Jeff having many of them. The presidents speech before the final battle is one of the iconic speeches in movie history. The dad’s heroic sacrifice. Jeff once again playing a character that discovers something bad and tries to warn people.
In the movie theater everyone cheered when the dog survived! It was awesome The whole aliens getting sick is actually a reference to the war of the worlds but that would be interesting if that happened in this movie but I doubt it
If you want Jeff Goldblum at his hottest, watch "Earth Girls are Easy" (1988) with Geena Davis. Bonus points for Before-they-were-famous Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans.
I have to agree. There's some prime Jeff Goldblum in the first half of The Fly. Bare-chested quite a bit, sometimes totally nude. But in the second half, it all goes so so wrong...
Independence Day. I saw it in the theaters in 1996. I was born on the 4th of July, and since the movie came out it has been my tradition to watch it. I love this movie. It's one of the purest examples of a summer blockbuster. A "popcorn" movie through and through. Great effects that still hold up, great music, great cast. Everything is great. Not a dull moment. Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, and Bill Pullman just kick ass and fit their roles like well worn baseball gloves. 26:42 One thing I have to say here because this is usually at the root of everyone's criticism of this movie. It's more plausible that we would be able to inflict a computer virus on an alien race than an actual virus. The reason diseases on Earth affect human beings is because we evolved along side them. They have evolved specifically to work with our bodies. This is also why certain diseases you find in animals either don't harm humans or inflict themselves on us different than they do on other species. This is also why, for example, when Spanish and European settlers came to the United States diseases like smallpox were so devastating on the American Indian tribes. An alien species from another part of the galaxy is going to suffer no effect from that at all. You'd need their genetic code and some major pharma power in order to create something like that. The aliens in this movie hijacked our satellites and used them to coordinate their attacks. People always make this mistake and think David hacked alien technology. He didn't. He hacked the aliens signal which as visually depicted is some kind of a data stream constantly being refreshed. All of their ships are networked under that signal which is compatible with our technology. Likely it's in some form of binary or basic machine language that could be universally understood... Which also means it would be universally vulnerable to disruption if you knew what to look for. David figured it out. All i'm going to say, if you haven't watched it yet, Men in Black. You guys have to watch the original Men in Black. Also, you guys really shouild watch some Star Trek on here. Wrath of Khan especially.
Well George definitely needs to watch enough _Star Trek_ to know who freakin Data is haha. Not as bad as not knowing who Spock is but come on :P The other thing about the virus, I've always had the headcanon that low-power control systems of the ship remained online, and it's only the flight/shields/weapons that were inaccessible. So they've been learning how to make our computers interface with theirs for decades. ...and also that the aliens have enough of a hive mind thing going on they never developed significant security software haha.
The city landmarks were models ... for the explosion coming down the street they filmed the model city on its side with the cameera pointing down ... so when the building blew up the explosion went vertically through the streets of the sideways city.
Independence Day and Thanksgiving are hard to compare because the former is a lot more public pomp with fireworks, etc and is casual cookouts and things but the latter is a more personal, family homey-style holiday. I feel like they're equally as "big" in how they're anticipated.
I thought "Well, they're not really comparable..." and then saw your comment at the top. Agree on all points. Thanksgiving is a bigger deal for me, because I like cold weather, and fattening foods. July 4th is too outdoors/sunny/running around. I want to eat a turkey, stuffing, some pie, and then collapse in a food coma in a cold room.
While I generally agree, the only reason I might argue that Independence Day is possibly bigger is because there are a ton of people/places/brands who go straight into Christmas-mode the minute Halloween ends (Xmas songs and decorations in November, etc) rather than Thanksgiving-mode. 4th of July doesn't really have a competitor nearby to distract from the holiday.
Yeah you could make an argument for either one being the biggest American holiday. I would probably lean slightly Thanksgiving, but July 4 is not far behind.
@@jeffburnham6611 Thanksgiving is bigger holiday.... more people are traveling to see families. I'd also argue more people spend time prepping on cooking for Thanksgiving over Independence Day. Debating which one is more important isn't their question....they are asking which one is bigger.
I feel like Thanksgiving is a slightly bigger deal because it always happens on a Thursday and most people will get Thursday and Friday (and sometimes Wednesday) off of work, so plans can be more elaborate. But yeah, Independence day is pretty important too.
IIRC we had facepalming all over the movie theatre because of its cheesy patriotism. And then "our independence day" - but needing the whole world to fight... so making the world effort a US-success? Really?
@@Engy_Wuck He literally says the US won't even celebrate its own independence day anymore because the united world effort is so much more important. What are you even talking about. But yes of course it's cheesy patriotism haha. It's a cheesy movie and he's giving a speech to the American military, what would you expect?
@@jerodastthen you listened to another movie - he expected the *world* to celebrtate the (US) independence day in the future. At least that's how I interpret "the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday but as the day when the world declared in one voice, '[...]Today we celebrate our Independence Day!'”
@@MonokelJohn Oh I honestly didn't know that. I've never been into the whole UFO craze. Then again the movie is from 77, so itself is referencing those. Plus you bet it had a huge influence. It coined the term mothership, for example. And there's that scene with the helicopter, flashing those light arrays at one of the alien ships. That's a direct nod to the movie.
Imagine the moment where the suit burst open 22:38 on a big screen in a crowded theatre with the sound cranked up. You could feel everyone get tense as they started opening the suit and when it bursts open everyone jumped out of their seats. It was a nice communal scare.
Area 51 is real. It is the area around Groom Lake which has been (and probably continues to be) used for developing secret aircraft such as the A-12, the SR-71, the U2 and the B2. There are daily unlisted commutrer flights there from Las Vegas. Some people think it is also used for examining crashed flying saucers and developing technology based on them. It seems the USAF has historically encouraged these rumours, possibly to help obfuscate their real work. If you look at the straight-on front and side views of a B2 you can see why someone might think it was saucer-shaped...
I understood it as them wondering if they really do have proof of alien existence AT Area 51, but who knows. Maybe they really didn't know if it was a real place, I dunno.
When the new Microsoft Flight Simulator, with real-world surface imagery, came out last year, for the first month or so if you watched on Twitch, _everyone_ was doing Area 51 flyovers. Urban legends are such fun.
In general: Yes, they have, or HAD, evidence of aliens at Area 51. Site-4. But the research has since moved on to other facilities. For the curious look into the story of Bob Lazar.
It’s hard to pick which holiday is bigger, because they are both celebrated differently. Independence Day is about fun, summer, fireworks, outdoor activities, where Thanksgiving is about family, food, etc. Plus Thanksgiving unofficially kicks off the holiday season in the US since it’s at the end of November.
When it comes to Star Trek, I love the movies and I grew up on TNG and DS9. Apart from a small handful, I can take or leave TOS and everything post DS9. But I am enjoying Lower Decks.
My top fave Star Trek is either TNG or Voyager. Why Voyager? Well, I began watching that as a youngster when it was brand new and I watched each upcoming episode and repeats on tv. Yeah, female captain.. isn't a big deal at all. She did a great job as captain! The show itself was gripping and highly entertaining. Each episode usually contained a new problem or puzzle that nobody has ever seen before (both in Star Trek in general and it was new for viewers as well). Voyager is worth watching!
Never seen Star Trek!! You’ve got to watch the original crew in Star Trek 2,3,&4 (Wrath of Khan, Search For Spock, & Voyage Home). Great movies and they showcase the original cast and themes so well. The next generation shows and movies are good too.
I reckon watch a small handful of Original Series episodes to set the stage first. Maybe City on the Edge of Forever, Space Seed, Amok Time and then go into the movies. They're all very enjoyable in themselves and some of them set up a few plot points that make watching the films a bit more rewarding.
This is also eerily similar to a quote from the War of the Worlds novel (that Independence Day is heavily based on). “It's just men and ants. There's the ants builds their cities, live their lives, have wars, revolutions, until men want them out of the way, and then they go out of the way. That's what we are now _ just ants.”
Russell was originally in his biplane with a missile strapped to it. That's why the commanders had no idea who he is - he was presumed to have been rejected. That's also why his fighter flies so slow and needs cover fire. For some reason this was changed nearly 6 months after principle filming concluded.
Independence Day is traditionally more of a celebratory, party atmosphere. You barbecue, have some beers, and then go watch fireworks or set them off yourself (depending on local laws & how much you respect them). Thanksgiving is traditionally a family-oriented holiday, where you wear your least comfortable clothes then drive long distances so you can eat a huge meal with a bunch of relatives you don't really want to see. Also there's football and a few big parades. So in essence, they're both big deals but for different reasons. I think most Americans look forward to Independence Day more.
Least comfortable? You ain't from where I am from. We wear our most comfortable! We gather the people we want to be around, consume shameful amounts of our favorite dishes, either watch football or succumb to a food coma.
@@radicaladz The same banking cartel that owns Britain also owns the US now so we are pretty much playing for the same team, global psychopathic multi national corporate overlords hiding under a fake veil of democracy.
@agp11001 true, and since it was a salute to the people of the world instead of Just the US it had more of an us VS them with the Us being all of Humanity for the first time every
When this came out it was specifically cast with people who were all about equally up and coming famous, so based on the casting it really was an anyone could die, anyone could end up the hero, kind of movie.
Seeing this in theaters, still remember after my family being both impressed and amazed at how many actors we recognized in this. The talent was fantastic.
Such a fun movie! I still watch some of the city destruction scenes over and over because they're so epic. This movie was by far the biggest miniature FX movie in history, and might still be. CG FX were used for most of the background fighter jet action in the aerial battles (using early crowd simulation software), but most of the vehicles and all the explosions and stuff were real models and bangbangs. Very few matte paintings were used though, as the director much preferred miniature backgrounds to painted ones. So much fun!
The most plausible explanation for Area 51 (the real life version) is that it is (possibly) a testing site for prototype USAF aircraft. If you take a look at some of the current and past USAF inventory, planes like the B2 Spirit (which features a fairly unique flying wing shape) and the SR-71 Blackbird (which as of 2021 still holds the record for fastest air-breathing manned aircraft, a record it has held since 1976) you can understand why UFO sightings around Area 51 became a thing. A popular theory is that the Air Force purposely encouraged alien theories to distract the public while simultaneously discrediting any serious observer as a crazy loon obsessed with UFOs. Given how popular it has become I don't find it likely that the Air Force still tests highly sensitive equipment there, although it is still heavily guarded. As in, the guards can shoot you if you trespass and it would be a lawful shooting, although I'd imagine that that would go for any sensitive military base. Interestingly, supposedly defunct aircraft like the F117 Nighthawk have been spotted fairly recently flying around there. As for why, your guess is as good as mine.
My guess is modern testing is probably done in either Alaska or Antarctica and area 51 is kept going as a distraction. Though I do know for a fact some army testing is done in Alabama. When I was a teen I lived near where the army was testing stealth helicopters.(they never could get the thermal shielding right). And saw them sometimes. They usually flew at night right around treetop lvl when traveling to the test ranges. What was awesome was how quiet they were. A normal chopper makes a lot of noise because the rotors break the sound barrier when spinning. They stealth copter had notches in the rotors to keep them from creating a sonic boom and were whisper quiet in comparison.
@Don113 The first paragraph is exactly correct. The U-2, A-12, B-2 Spirit, the SR-71 Blackbird, and the F-117 Nighthawk were all developed there. It was, _and still is_ (yes, they still test top secret equipment there), an Air Force skunkworks facility. It's also part of Nellis Air Force Base. That's why the F-117 has been spotted flying around there... even though they've been retired from front-line duty, they're still used as training aircraft.
LOL, yeah when they said that, I was immediately like "Not every country has had to fight for independance.". I mean, Canada became independant entirely peacefully and we don't refer to the 1st of July as "Independance Day", it's simply National Day (and here in Quebec we have a different one called, Saint-Jean-Baptise Day, honoring the foundation of New France [June 24th, 1534], because being mostly of French descent we don't really identify with anglo-saxon history or culture). I think that's what they really meant to say but mispoke.
This movie was an homage to the old 1950's alien invasion movies, with updated special effects. From the miniatures to the explosions and the chemistry of the actors it was the perfect summer blockbuster!
I'd say that Independence Day is a more "patriotic" holiday with lots of flag-waving pride. Thanksgiving, while inherently an American holiday, is more about gathering with loved ones and celebrating togetherness. Oddly, I'd say Thanksgiving is the bigger holiday for its emphasis on tradition like large feasts with friends and family whom you may not see very often. Americans will travel great distances to spend Thanskgiving with their families. The 4th of July has a more casual feel to it for its more laid-back activities like backyard barbecues and kicking back to watch fireworks shows. For decades, conspiracies surrounded Area 51, mostly involving theories about aliens and their spacecraft being held there after crash-landing in Roswell, New Mexico. The U.S. government remained mum about these conspiracy theories. Only a couple years ago, they came out and stated that Area 51 was a top-secret facility for testing prototype military aircraft, but alien conspiracy theories still abound. Last year, there was even an semi-joking online movement to get people to gather outside Area 51, after which they'd "Naruto run" past security and infiltrate the facility to see what's inside. The U.S. government actually had to put out a statement that any effort to access the facility would be trespassing on federal property and punishable with imprisonment. Still, a good number of people appeared outside of Area 51, with even one or two of them being arrested for trying to force themselves past security.
Simone, I love your heart. You got me sniffling when you got emotional about the dog being saved. ❤ Bill Pullman's speech is simply one of the best ever. I get goosebumps every time I watch this. Great reactions as always, you two!!
Side note I enjoyed the sequel. It was campy but I felt like it was well done for what it was. For 2016 it wasn’t good, but I felt like it held onto its roots of a 90’s action movie. It’s at least worth the watch I’d say. I bought it with out seeing it, and I wasn’t upset by my purchase.
Schlemiel (Yiddish: שלומיאל; sometimes spelled shlemiel or shlumiel) is a Yiddish term meaning "incompetent person" or "fool".[1] It is a common archetype in Jewish humor, and so-called "schlemiel jokes" depict the schlemiel falling into unfortunate situations.[2]
Best most heartening part of this Review and React is the genuine, absolutely wholesomely genuine, quizzical response of why marrying a stripper would prevent someone from flying into space for their country. Beautiful :) I just want to take a moment and notice and appreciate the positive change in the world. Thank you, you two :)
You had goose bumps at the beginning of The President's speech :) That's awesome cuz it should do that. It was a great speech and I've actually had urges as I do now, to search youtube just for that scene. Well written and well delivered by Mr. Pullman
This movie was basically an updated version of "The War Of The Worlds" (1953) and for instance Jeff Goldblum based his appearance on that of Gene Barry in the original movie. Will Smith ad libbed many of his lines and this movie launched him as a major star.
Independence Day is better, you hang out with friends, have a barbecue, have a couple of brews, and watch fireworks. Thanksgiving, you eat a meal with family, doing your best to tolerate Uncle John. Christmas, you are grateful that your brother has his driver's license and you don't have to ride home with your parents and listen to them complain about the presents they got.
Amazing movie reaction! Also,.... as a friend, you need to watch Star Trek, George. At least the movies. I have faith you'll see them! Also, there was a whole scene that was removed where David learned about their systems and code and that's how he made the virus.
I AM A STICK! I love the Stormlight Archive. It helps if you remember that all the ships are on the same network and they've had decades to study their operating system. Still a bit much, BUT. Better. I love seeing the inside of the ship.
On Parks & Rec, Ron explained it as a Schlemiel being someone that spills soup at a party, and a Schlimazel as the person that it gets spilt on. And that Jerry is both.
Re: Independence Day vs Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving is definitely a bigger day for my family, probably because it is the beginning of the Christmas season. For ID, we just grill and watch 1776 (a hilarious and educational musical, which I recommend if you're into that kind of thing). Re: Star Trek, I recommend it, especially 2-4, although sadly maybe not for reaction videos. It's almost as bad as Studio Ghibli for copyright issues. Re: Area 51, a few years *after* this movie, the US government admitted that there is an Air Force base there. They still won't say what they do there, whether it's researching alien technology or just developing new planes.
Area 51 refers to a map reference the actual base is called homey airport and is part of the groom lake testing facility (named after the salt flat that makes up a large part of the facility) and was established as a research and development facility for the U2 dragon lady spy plane, other projects that were developed there include OXCART, SR-71, and F117 as well as reverse engineering captured foreign aircraft such as the mig 21. The staff there would never refer to it as area 51, they may refer to it as Dreamland or paradise ranch however as these are common nicknames for the facility
July 4th 1776 was when the American colonies officially declared their independence from the British monarchy. It is literally our “independence day”. We celebrate with bbq and fireworks. Thanksgiving day celebrates the survival of the newly arrived pilgrims to the new world. They survived mostly due to help by their new found friends the Wampanoag Indians. The pilgrims and the Wampanoag gathered at Plymouth for a celebration of the abundance of the harvest. I love the holiday because it’s a good reminder to always be thankful for what you have.
That sounds exactly like the bs you were taught in like 5th grade. As an adult, you should know better than to believe that white-washed aversion to the truth. Juneteenth is a REAL independence holiday, as it marks when truly ALL Americans were declared free.
Great reaction, I like how you two gel together so well. Plus you treated this movie for what it is, an entertaining summer blockbuster ride. As George realised best not to start analysing too much any part of this movie, the plotholes and inaccuracies would only spoil this popcorn classic! Best Wishes, Ian
That at 33:18 when Jeff Goldblum yells "must go faster, must go faster" is nod to his character from Jurrasic Park movie, when he yells same line when they are chased in car...
(US citizen) - I think I'd prefer Thanksgiving due to the family time and appreciation for the blessings of the year. It's characterized by a big family meal around a football game. Independence Day is more of a long-weekend summer celebration, sometimes with a big family bar-b-q under fireworks.
Both Independence Day and Thanksgiving are big but in slightly different ways. Independence Day is often celebrated within the community at large while Thanksgiving is often celebrated as a close family holiday.
I hate posting twice but....GEORGE!!!!!!! NEVER WATCHED STAR TREK?!?!?!?!? OMG!!!! As Scotty would say "What's wrong with ya laddie?!?!?!?!" Simone you guys must now watch the Star Trek movies!!!!!! My favourite comment about Independence Day was from the late great comedian Patrice O Neal when Will Smith punches out the alien he said he didn't knock out the alien, but he knocked out his outfit
How have Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum not worked together in any other films!?! They are so good together!! and so pretty ^-^
It’s ridiculous. No buddy films or nothing. They gotta do one together. Another one I mean.
Thanksgiving, 4th of July and Christmas all celebrated the same, they are ALL national holidays with paid time off.
They both have done science fiction on their own. At some point in time you will need to react to Jeff Goldblum's _The Fly_ .
at 8:10 I can name a reason why aliens would pick a fight with us, it's because we're dangerous, we constantly wage war with each other and at the same time kill our planet, if we got past our solar system we would surely kill anything that isn't us under the pretense of protecting ourselves, so it's it would be better if someone got us how we are now instead of waiting until it's to late
the studios didn't want Will Smith in this, because they didn't think black men are 'bankable', but Emmerich persisted and it became Smith's first blockbuster movie
There's a deleted scene that explains they were able to create the virus because modern PC's were created based on designs from the alien ship's computers at area 51
This! All this!
Oh, that explains so much
I think they just assumed that people would draw the logical conclusion that the jump in electronics development we experienced in the late 40's/early 50's was a result of reverse-engineering the crashed spacecraft's systems, it's a common trope in scifi.
Even if we didn't base our computers on their stuff, we'd still had decades to study their OS.
Deleting that scene was such a stupid decision on whomever's part.
I like the bit where George says “we don’t declare war on ants”. It’s true, if there’s an anthill in the way we just roll right over it, or exterminate it. It’s not a war, we barely even register it as a conscious act at all.
Now ask the ants what just happened to them.
Exactly what I was thinking
ask my baby cousin who stood his ground on the ant hill until he had to retreat with oochies and booboos.
"I thought this had Will Smith in it."
If it's an American movie in the 90's, I think Will Smith just naturally occurred.
"he just showed up one day assuming he'd been hired, and we didn't want to argue"
Like, the Wachowski sisters wanted Will to play Neo xD
He wasn't in Mars Attacks or either of the Jurassic Parks, though. (I guess what happened with that was, if you aren't in Independance Day you where in Mars Attacks, or vice-versa)
He was the young Samuel L Jackson
Will Smith and Jim Carrey pretty much owned the 90s movie scene.
As a Canadian, Bill Pullman's speech makes me proud to be American
Haha I'm glad. I've seen other non-US viewers get angry at the (very silly) nationalism of that speech, which I really don't get - the whole speech is about how the victory of the united world against the aliens is more important than the American holiday! But with a little tie-in American history to get the troops going :)

No shit man
" I feel like a fat dumb stinky ass turd". "fuck Jeff Goldblum man"
Rewatching this movie its so apparent that the actors and characters make this movie the classic that it is.
Stargate is really a great choice

Independence Day's story was actually inspired when they the directors were promoting Stargate. XD

This is the first movie where I've been legitimately invested in an American president as a character XD This guy embodies everything I wanna see in a leader; composure, assertiveness, diplomacy, compassion, determination... and COURAGE. Big screen, well equipped with the sound, and a matinee full packed of people for the noisy crowd's reactions. 💪🏾
It is one of the best inspirational speeches in film, hands down.
@@jacobvardy Exactly, if Roland Emmerich was just big explosions and nothing intelligent, his name would be Michael Bay.
The effects of the first attack on the cities are still so amazing. They held up really well

@TheJoeGreene So it was quite different on that side of Atlantic ocean compared to what we had here in Finland.
I was a projectionist at one point. So glad for modern digital tech. Couldn't pay me to go back to taping film together. 🙂
"They really hate landmarks" had me rolling.

Destroying landmarks is a quick and easy way to hurt morale.
@@d33dub That's what got me with that statement.
Commander Data is the man ;- )
I was 10 years old when this movie came out and I saw it in the theater. It was awesome.
I was five when this came out and that alien dissection scene scarred me for awhile. This movie is top teir alien movie as scifi filmes go.
Absolutely. It's a silly scifi fantasy ofc, and hardly the best-written thing. But it's so damn fun, and I watch it every time it's on TV
Same here. Watched it with my sister.
Most likely because it contained to much truth [queues x-files music]
@Kristopher Chavez It sadly was a pacing issue, they couched it in several cut scenes, sentences here and there.
The extended edition added some good scenes (like that one mentioned) but other ones mess with the pacing. Especially in the first “act” the lack of any background score in the scenes interrupts the flow
I always assumed that Steve Jobs worked for Area 51.
@Kristopher Chavez Well if it was just like one line tossed in, they could have kept it in and not ruin the pace of the movie.

The white house was actually built around a frame they could attach premade parts to. So they could actually blow it up more than once.
It was released five years before 9/11. The destruction wrought in this film would not have gone over too well had it been released just after 9/11.
@@MichaelScheele Well duh, of course it wouldn't have gone over well. That's my point, it was different just seeing it, even if it was only a movie.
Earth Versus The Flying Saucers did the same thing.
When they turned the movie into a book they use the biplane.

"I've never seen Star Trek" 😵
I gotta toss "Mars Attacks" out there as a suggestion. It's similar, but different enough to be a good experience. It's also got a star studded cast.
I'll second this only as a curiosity that everyone should see at least once. Overall it is NOT a good movie, though it does have a few sporadic moments of pitch black humor. And honestly it's kind of amazing to watch a Tim Burton movie with a star-studded cast go so horribly wrong. 👍🏼
I agree it's a bad movie despite the A-list cast. But , in my opinion, it falls under the "so bad it's good category."
Or 'Paul'...
To counter those saying it's an awful movie, I submit that it isn't awful and is actually quite fun.
I always enjoyed Jeff Goldbum reprising his line from Jurassic Park, "Must go faster!" This movies was fun to see on the big screen when it came out.
July 4th is explosions and drinking. Thanksgiving is gluttony and television. They each play to different American strengths.

A bit more than that
I love how you guys laughed at all the good jokes and loved the movie immediately on first viewing.
And here I am using Windows XP. If the aliens invade again, we're gonna have to come up with another plan.

Not as bad as not knowing who Spock is but come on :P
The other thing about the virus, I've always had the headcanon that low-power control systems of the ship remained online, and it's only the flight/shields/weapons that were inaccessible.
What a swagger from Goldblum at the end there
Independence Day and Thanksgiving are hard to compare because the former is a lot more public pomp with fireworks, etc and is casual cookouts and things but the latter is a more personal, family homey-style holiday.

He introduced the alien to the fourth kind.
It's UFO experience related terminology from the 70's, it's not necessarily a reference to the movie.
Goldblum / Smith should do another action, comedy, buddy thing together!
Definitely something there between them you can’t write for!
George: Does he also get a bare-chested scene in this movie?
Simone: God I hope so....
That was the most thirsty moment I've seen in awhile lmao
And the B2 bomber was the bomber delivering the nuke in the movie.
The most important thing that I got from this is that Star Trek TNG needs to be added to the reaction list ASAP!
No good, George is a Star Trek racist apparently? 😁 Anway, TNG is pretty naff. It's TOS or nothing.
Kinda like the Galifrey Gals. One veteran fan, and one newb fan watching TNG
@@philb3549 Hard disagree with you there. Star Trek got good when Roddenberry died so it's everything post TNG season 5 and nothing else.
Saw this in theaters. They really should have had recruiters outside the doors as people walked out! Everyone felt pumped up and patriotic! 😄
Never seen Star Trek!! You’ve got to watch the original crew in Star Trek 2,3,&4 (Wrath of Khan, Search For Spock, & Voyage Home). Great movies and they showcase the original cast and themes so well. The next generation shows and movies are good too.
The best Star Trek moves are the even-numbered ones, assuming you include Galaxy Quest.
I reckon watch a small handful of Original Series episodes to set the stage first. Maybe City on the Edge of Forever, Space Seed, Amok Time and then go into the movies. They're all very enjoyable in themselves and some of them set up a few plot points that make watching the films a bit more rewarding.
I don't know how you can call yourself a scientist and not worship at the altar of Roddenberry
@Kristopher Chavez Undiscovered Country! You have good taste.
They should watch all 6. Granted the first is a bit slow paced, but that fly by of the enterprise beautiful.
This movie is a definition of a blockbuster! Also, best presidential speech ever!!!
@9:30 "We don't declare war on ants." Tell that to people who suffer from ant infestations.
There is a very big business called pest control.
It probably tested badly
President: “We’re being exterminated”
“I love these conclusions”
President: What do you want us to do?
Alien: Die
Actually watching this video on my country's Independence day.
As Al Murray would say, Americans see the War of Independence as a victory, whereas the British see it as a lucky fucking escape. ;)
@@radicaladz pretty fucking lucky when you consider these dinky 13 colonies became the most powerful and rich country in the world.
@@tehdouglas1 how's the fire damage to the White House doing these days? ;P

That's probably one of the best speeches in cinematic history for a rallying speach.
Everybody needs an Overly Enthusiastic Salute Guy in their life.
@agp11001 true, and since it was a salute to the people of the world instead of Just the US it had more of an us VS them with the Us being all of Humanity for the first time every
"That's what I call a close encounter" is a reference to the movie title "Close Encounters of the Third Kind".
Or Jeffrey Epstein held parties there.
"Every country values their own independence day"
As a British person I can say you're not entirely correct there guys :)
You guys are the ones everyone is celebrating independence from lol
Yes, we value the US's independence day instead. Lucky escape, that.
@@tadcooper9733 lol pretty much!
You don´t have an independence day but as a dane may I remind you of the romans, saxons, danes and normans?
I wonder if Simone and George have seen War of the Worlds, since the computer virus is a direct reference to the disease killing the WotW aliens!
Bill Pullman's speech is simply one of the best ever. I get goosebumps every time I watch this.
Great reactions as always, you two!!
It’s about 4-5 hours from NY to DC depending on the traffic :)
Side note I enjoyed the sequel. It was campy but I felt like it was well done for what it was. For 2016 it wasn’t good, but I felt like it held onto its roots of a 90’s action movie. It’s at least worth the watch I’d say. I bought it with out seeing it, and I wasn’t upset by my purchase.
but that traffic I'm in eastern Virginia, we hate the 95 corridor
I love George's reaction to the computer virus thing! "I'm just not going to think about actual computer science." 😂
A wise move in this case. lol
@@marcw6875 agreed
I was waiting for that moment, lmao 😂
Both holidays are big. 4th of July is more partying, Thanksgiving is family time. Hi Simone. 😍
Fun fact, most of the city explosions are fire were done with models and practical effects. CGI wasn't at a believable level to use yet.
The visuals are insane for this film, better than most current and it's 25 years old!
Independence day is a lot more fun than sitting around a large table arguing politics with your family. So my vote is for Independence day.
Except i doubt even now you could marry a stripper and fly into space lol
Good reaction. Here are six words regarding the sequel: "Stay away for your own good!"
It's not good but it's not that bad.
Watched this on July 2,3,4 when it came out, loved it as a teen. Still like it. President's speech toward the end STILL gives me goose bumps!
I AM A STICK! I love the Stormlight Archive.
It helps if you remember that all the ships are on the same network and they've had decades to study their operating system. Still a bit much, BUT. Better.
I love seeing the inside of the ship.
The Stick!
Very nice speech from "Lonestar"....
I suggest "Air Force One" (1997) with Harrison Ford!
This is actually a retelling of "War of the Worlds" by H G Wells, written in 1897.
Schlemiel is a Yiddish word. It kind of means like a doofus or dunce; someone who gets in their own way and isn't too bright about it.
On Parks & Rec, Ron explained it as a Schlemiel being someone that spills soup at a party, and a Schlimazel as the person that it gets spilt on.
And that Jerry is both.
It all depends on which American you talk to. Me personally, I like them both equally because they give me a reason to cook on my smoker.
"The President is an alien... *silence* sorry ... let's watch the movie..." - hilarious
We must educate and convert George immediately!!!! LOL
2 things granted the 1st Star Trek movie was a little pedantic but from there on in they get awesome and The Next Generation is just 100 steps better. That being said George MUST see these movies. If I had my way I'd sit him thru all 7 seasons of Next Gen. but thats a bit much for a movie reaction channel lol.
You guys rock!!!! You're my #1 movie reaction channel by FAR. Please keep up the good work and never stop. Love you guys.

My favourite comment about Independence Day was from the late great comedian Patrice O Neal when Will Smith punches out the alien he said he didn't knock out the alien, but he knocked out his outfit
