A couple of years ago a tornado took the second floor off my Dad's house in East Texas. You could see the sky from the downstairs rooms. He had to have his house completely rebuilt. It was a mess.
I used to have nightmares about tornados as a child, I can literally still remember them. The sound of the old yellow warning sirens, originally for Soviet Nuclear attacks was so haunting.
I still have recurring tornado dreams that usually take place at my grandfather's house. In real life, there are houses and trees blocking out the surrounding area, but in my dreams there is nothing but open field around his back yard. In my dreams, there are three to five tornadoes all travelling fast in a line next to each other. The other tornado dreams take place at my parent's house. Same deal, in real life there are houses and trees blocking the surrounding area, but in the dreams it is more open and you can see the tornados more clearly.
This movie had me traumatized for months as a kid. Any cloud formation with a pointed tip I'd immediately freak out. Also driving on open roads on cloudy days

I love disaster movies. Volcano, Dante's Peak and Tornado (with Bruce Campbell) are great too. I'm also to the ones from the 70's like Airport (1970) and it's sequels, The Poseidon Adventure, Towering Inferno, Earthquake and Avalanche.
I love this film. The sound, the soundtrack, the story, the cinematography and atmosphere, and actors and characters you love..plus a cool ass truck..I mean it's such a perfect theatrical film.
I was a photog for a local ABC station in Lawton Oklahoma and met some storm chasers, they were a lot like these characters in the movie 😂 a little nuts 🤣😂🤣 but they weren't crazy enough to purposely get in the path of a tornado 😮
Tornado facts: chickens plucked bald, feathers embedded into light pole: eggs carried 709 yards, unbroken. 5 month old child ripped from mothers arms, and placed 300 yards away, under a tree, dirty but very much alive. A check picked up & carried 511 miles away, dropped in a couples garden.
That was an amazing reaction! Thank you so much for watching this icon! Believe it or not, they actually interviewed 2 people who actually were in the middle of the tornado and survived. So everything Bill and Jo saw were exactly as the survivors described it. Helen Hunt has also been in these films: Quarterback Princess, based on true story about a girl being a kicker on all boys football team, and Soul Surfer, which based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton’s shark attack and overcoming her obstacles to get back in the water. If you want more natural disaster films I recommend Dante’s Peak and Volcano. 👩🏼👨🏻🌪

The movie basically had about an hour and a half to explain how the tornados come together, how they try to read them and what they're doing and how they can get more warnings out to more people to save lives.
FYI: the strongest tornado wind speed, was in 1999; the Bridge Creek/Moore, Oklahoma tornado. 310 mph!!! The largest was the 2013 El Reno, Oklahoma 2.6 mile wide tornado. The deadliest was the 1925 Tri-State(Missouri, Illinois, Indiana) tornado. 650 to 700 killed!!!
They don't use the old Fujita scale anymore, but it used to go more or less like this; F0- More or less a violent thunder storm. Your chimney might take damage but you should be okay with shelter. F1- Your house will need repairs but it should remain intact. F2- You will probably lose your roof. Get into your basement. F3- This is a serious tornado. Seek shelter, preferably underground. Expect significant damage. F4- Your house will be completely destroyed and you'll have a big mess to clean up after. F5- Just get underground and pray for your life. Don't worry about your house, you'll never see a scrap of it again. The good news is there's no mess to clean up because the storm takes care of that for you.
Tornadoes actually have different sounds, they can have a loud rumble, if they are going through a neighborhood they can sound like freight train and if they are going through like a field or trees it could sound like a jet or even a waterfall. It's literally the winds, debris and the raw power of it that makes the noises.
Got to take into perspective the time frame when this movie was made. That's why it didn't catch you in what you were expecting. Back when this movie came out of was intriguing. 😅
In my state We have hot summers but at least we don't have weather disasters. We don't have earthquakes, we don't have massive floods, we don't have tornadoes, we don't have hurricanes, we don't have blizzards, Etc. We have some hot summers & some monsoons. The heat can kill you if you're out there four days it's not like out of nowhere like most natural disasters I listed
I've seen the footage from the insanely biblical Tornado 🌪️ that hit Joplin, Missouri and quite frankly not enough words can describe what a absolute monster that thing was absolutely hellfire and brimstone those people experienced in 2011 😔
So many reactors don't care about Bill fiancée in the movie and her feelings. I know were supposed to be root for Jo and them but it still kind of messed up how he Bill did his fiancée.
I was so happy they didn't make her out to be a bitch. Usually they make the third person such an awful person, you wonder why they'd be with the guy to begin with. I felt for Melissa. I'm glad she wasn't that upset.
I think that was a mistake with this film, not having a better scene with her parents and kinda getting to know them, and they just don't come across as her parents. Her mother doesn't look like her and the age seems off. They show 2 or 3 families and they all look identical. As for holding the door..I think it's supposed to be the tail end of the tornado getting him, but it's just not filmed in the best fashion. The way it's filmed just comes across as him dying needlessly because he could have just hid in the corner like the others. Seeing him getting sucked into the air was very cool to see in theaters, but I don't know how they could have done it better without the others getting sucked in as well. But hey, maybe he was just unlucky and made a mistake because he never had to hold the door in the first place. haha
I'm not sure why, but this was one of my little sister's favorite movies as a kid. Fascination and fear, I would guess was the reason. That and flying cows.

I've lived in Ohio for pretty much my entire 34 years and I've seen a few funnel clouds and weird colored storms but I've never seen an actual tornado. A few have touched down relatively close to me, one even went through the lot where my grandparents house was eventually built, but I have yet to get lucky enough to see one myself. I would prefer not to ever have to deal with an F5, thankfully they are quiet rare with the last "official" F5 in the country happening about 10 years ago. As much as I would like to see a tornado, and as unfraid as I am of pretty much anything, F5's absolutely terrify me.
Well that's bcuz they base the scale of a tornado off it's destruction lol believe me there's been quite a few EF 5 twisters since then. El Reno for example, so if you do see a tornado don't measure it's size bcuz you wouldn't know until you experience it

I think the marriage failing was Bills fault. During tornado season they were fine together. But off season, he got bored. Lost his sense of direction. The job wasn’t fun anymore. And neither was the marriage.

I lost my house to a tornado in 2016 - the whole community comes together and by the end of the next day we had everything we needed for a new house.
You're completely right that the debris flying around would have absolutely shredded them on a number of occasions
I live in Kansas part of the Tornado Alley we Dodge tornadoes every year the worst time of year around here is in May that's when we see the most

Four storm chasers were killed outside OKC in 2013 ... the only ones killed so far. Used to go to church just down the road from Wakita.

The horror potential of tornados is underutilized in movies. I can imagine a lot worse than this.
