Absolutely! No matter what the physical distance between the lenses is. I still want to set my real presice IPD in software for perfect immersion
When I went through the setup initially I adjusted it with the headset on and it showed IPD numbers on screen between clicks if you moved it very slowly so the software may already be compensating already and the clicks may just be the points where it shifts the entire screen rendering? Just a theory.
surprisingly, it actually does shift in the software. if you put your finger in front of the face sensor then you can actually see it changing for setting one, 1.5, and two
So is Chromatic Aberration bad?
I'm going to see if my widmo lenses from my Go will fit.

my oculus was at the bottom of a moving box unprotected by the garage door for like 6 months with lots of other stuff, those lenses are DURABLE.
Is pisses me off how during the conference they said they were considering 5 but 3 worked for ENOUGH people. So dumb. I’m 66/67 so it isn’t a big deal
rift S was fixed at 63, at it did well... so...
@@Shoniforce the screen moved though
@@Shoniforce id did well because you could change the ipd using the software so everyone was catered for
@@Dylan_0130 the screen didnt really move and it hurt my eyes
@@marklola12 the software did nothing, i have 68 and the rift S would cause eye strain and headaches
IPD is very important for a good VR experience so i don't understand why there is not a beter system for this on the Quest 2, especially while this product is ment to introduce the massis to it. Now a lot of people will think VR is uncomfortable and give up on VR. Oculus should make software to improve IPD soon!
Cleaver tip this i will try it!
A trick that I found useful for people with IPD's over the 68 max on the Quest 2, that also removes the black vertical bars that you can only see when have that upper range of IPD's is to simply add the glasses spacer, regardless if you need it. It changes the angle that the light is bent into your eyes by moving them slightly away from the lenses
What is the glasses spacer??
@@nathanbenkhe5219 do you have a quest 2? What items came in the box?
@@manojlds headset, sillicon pad, 2 controllers, 1m type-c cable, power charger. And a couple of documentation.
Should i get my IPD check before getting one
@Andrew Wang i hope my IPD is not above 68 or 70
Doesn't help me. My IPD is 74mm. I have a huge head, and nothing but respect for my mum.
Pretty sure even index only goes up to 70. Not much you can do there honestly
My ipd is 73 and the 3 setting works fine for me. Not perfect, and I'm using the standard headstrap. I use the glasses spacer with mine eventhough I don't have glasses and yeah works well enough
@@goxy287 yes, I'm a massive-headed freak, however I now have the Quest 2 and the widest setting, although not perfect, is adequate.
So, no chance for me to try Quest 2 then. Because my IPD is 79mm 😥 I hate my big head 😡
Hopefully they’ll add software offsets through an update, not perfect but should help if outside the range.
I had thought about this too, a cool idea would be to 3D print rings to go in the gap and hold the lenses in the “in-between” spots. You could have quite a range of ipd’s that way and they won’t snap back into 1,2, or 3
Woo, I just thought about the same solution, well thought 👍🏼
Why the hell didn't they just make it a slider? It would work on the same principle and the coding would hardly be that much harder to do? It's like they wanted to give people reasons to not like what they were doing? The IPD is one of the bigger reasons I don't intend to get one, the lcd screen is another as is the Facebook thing. I used to have a Facebook account linked to my headset but I have stopped using it. It's not the invasion of privacy that bothers me so much as the damaging social engineering they are engaged in.
@@glenrisk5234 I have the quest 2 and i gotta say the ghost rays are terrible. I generally dont relly care about them doing targeted ads etc. I think they did only make 3 settings to make the "astetic" better or to make you buy the fit pack. I have the 256 GB version and im gonna say you need to get that and the deluxe headstrap which in my country costs about 600 dollars.
There are already designs on thingiverse that has a similar idea. i could seng you a link if you want.

As someone who designs things like this, it would have literally cost them zero money to make 4 extra settings
Wow. that's facebook for you fellas!
They think people are stupid, as if with 6 settings people's heads will explode
@@kfireven Exactly. Like, i personally have no problem because i have 62.5 ipd (literally perfect for the middle one) But i'm sure that if i had a 65 ipd i wouldn't be dumb enough to not look at the screen for the damn correct adjustment!
They literally said they had a prototype with 5 adjustments but went with 3 What the fuck.
@@Dylan_0130 yeah lol, like wth
I doubt this will be seen, but the software *does* update the middle ipd. It won't show in the hmd the true ipd, but you can verify this by using a sideloaded app that displays it. The headset has a potentiometer inside of it despite only having 3 positions.
Whats the sideload app name?
it would have been so easy and wouldn’t have costed anything to add a few extra modes, they made it 3 for simplicity sake, as if anyone buying a vr is mentally ill or something
Ugh, how could they make this mistake and think it's ok. They wouldn't even had to include a slider, just remove the bumps from the adjustment and give it continuous friction. And then for the 1-2-3 window, add an arrow and lines so that dialing in your favourite in-between settings is more precise.
Wonder if it could have been continuous friction with the ability to somehow lock the lenses in place inside the headset so they don't move after the adjustment? The locking mechanism doesn't make sense IMO either...
@@dillacorn_linux I have an idea: 3d printed spacer bars. They gently wedge themselves in the spaces to lock the lenses in place
@@antoniocialfi77 That could work too! Maybe a wedge to go between the lenses and outside of them... But it might not be perfect.
@@dillacorn_linux ye that's exactly what i was thinking, but I didn't want to go into extreme detail.
It all depends on if the Quest 2 has a conductive slider like the original, or a more simple 3 position switch (it NEEDS some way to know where the lenses are to properly adjust the LCD's image) Otherwise I guess you could do it yourself manually, like how the rift and PSVR software does it?
:( I'm tired of all these Headsets getting more and more narrow IPD.... My IPD is 78 and I can't use any headset comfortably.... Not even the original Vive gets high enough.... I wish they would make these headsets for a larger group of people
I agree completely, and I'm an eye doctor. It's not as bad for me, as my IPD is around 72. 78 is pretty darn wide.
@@TimRoot-dotcom Do you have Quest 2? I have IPD around 73/74mm and deeply thinking if buying Q2 is a good idea.
Are you sure it's 78? Maybe get an optometrist to remesure in case you did it yourself and made a mistake. First time I measured I had 72, not it's 66. Because I measured wrong the first time
@@timp6930 it's only goes to 68 tho.. I'd suggest trying it out witch someone who already has it too see if it's bearable first
@@timp6930 I have an oculus quest 2. My ipd is 72 and use it a 68. Its sometimes unbearable, im thinking of returning it. Gonna use it for a few more days and decided afterwards
Thanks, I was thinking about doing this the other day and I finally did it after watching your video and didn't see anything crazy like your lense eventually popping out. The level that the immersion jumped to was very, very noticeable after pushing the setting in-between the numbers. Boy, was I missing out.
The way he says “pupils” 😂 Great video though, very informative! I ended up caving and buying one yesterday!
Pewpeels!
His enthusiasm is infectious :D
66mm here, EACTLY the same problem. 2 = 61 - 66 (@63), 3 = 66+ (@68), putting it at 2.5 made it MUCH better. Thank you!
This was a good tip and the screen certainly has less ghosting for me when I set it half way on #2, which is more in line with my IPD measurement. Perhaps Facebook were trying to make the setup as simple as possible for a mainstream audience who may not go to the lengths of trying to measure their IPD. So I guess I can understand the concept of "pick the clearest setting of 3". Hopefully one day the headsets will actually be able to automatically measure this and help the user pick the right setting. Come to think of it they could probably get the front camera's to accurately measure this. Imagine having an option say on the phone app that walks you through how to make the oculus measure your IPD, and the measurement appears on the phone.
Quest 2 Fit Kit contains some light shielding rings for the lenses that help reduce the glare I was experiencing. Also, try the glasses spacer even if you dont wear them. It may be worth losing a little fov if they help you with the clarity, like they did for me. Worth a try!
HAAA good idea I might do this I'm about 63.5 so I'm fine but I still find glare and just a slightly unclear display with test hard ti read this is good idea though
@@jrdnanitsua My IPD is 65.
Have an HTC Vive laying around, and looking for new VR headset, your video's are very helpful in making my decision. I will probably wait for Reverb G2 and see more reviews about it before deciding between Quest 2 and Reverb G2, but honestly any upgrade will be a huge improvement in my case! So in that regard it probably won't matter that much.
Setting my IPD to sit between 2 and 3 (66mm) plus wearing my glasses with the space has sharpened up my image so much! Ty for the info.
My Quest 2 is coming next week I'm so excited!
5 months later. How you liking it?
Another reviewer tracked the images and found - according to his measurements - the images DO move into the half-measure positions. So it's not just the lens hallway between 1,2, or 3. So there's that, for whatever it's worth.
The old QUEST is made so much better. I have both and side by side you can really see where Facebook cut corners.
Maybe but on all specs and price the quest 2 demolishes the first gen
@@circusmunkey Nah, the only major spec improvement is the amazing processor. The screen resolution is great but at best it's an EQUAL tradeoff to how terrible the LCD's excuse for blacks look after coming from the original Quest's OLED. Occasionally seeing the screen door effect doesn't ruin immersion as bad as always seeing every part of the screen because muddy grey is the darkest it gets.
@@youmongrel I honestly am okay with the new lenses for the major improvements and while the processer is an incredible 2x improvement the others are still better by a significant margin, not everything can double each generation
Especially the lenses which give me a shitton of glare and godrays

This is my biggest disappointment with the Oculus Quest 2....having limited IPD settings is a big downgrade in my opinion. If they can improve it with a software adjustment, it would be great. 👌
or why not adjust when HMD is on the head? An external slider just like CV1 and gearvr (for focus)? So when new user take on the hmd he can see if its clear enough or not and can adjust when he see the picture at the same time?!
@@relaxvideo3d The original Quest had an external slider which was ideal, however, now they’ve gone down this route with the Quest 2 I feel the only option is to add some software adjustment to allow users to fine tune their IPD.
@@jonflowers1370 just imagine an event with lot of people want to see our work. We have to stop at every people and measure ipd, set lenses, then go? no way
@Han Lockhart no, i say it would be much easier to adjust the lenses when the user wear it already..
With 7 practical settings (3x hard locked positions + 3x "in-between" positions + an additional ≈70mm position if you put a piece of styrofoam or similar in-between the lenses to continually push them outwards) it works damn near perfectly for basically EVERYONE with an IPD +/- 2mm within the Quest 2's minimum & maximum, meaning this is really a total non-issue that's only being blown out of proportion by the uninformed.
And most importantly, this IPD adjustment system is massively, DRAMATICALLY CHEAPER to manufacture than the OG Quest & Rift's fully moving, dual display setups.
Yeah sure, getting the lenses to stay put in one of the "in-between" IPD settings takes a bit more time & effort than just switching between the 3x locked positions, but it's not THAT much more!... We're talking about like ≈20-30 seconds vs ≈5-10 seconds here... That's it. 🤷♂️
Very helpful! Thanks! It’s still driving me nuts more than I imagined it could, but this helps
The 3rd setting 68 works perfect for me and is way better than the Rift S was however being able to see the edges of the screen is very distracting and drives me crazy. If it was just dark line it would be fine but it appears like a bright blue line on each side of my peripheral vision ahhh...still totally worth though!
Same for me. Can’t stand the bars. If it wasn’t for this, the quest 2 would be perfect in my opinion
It should be black. It's only blue the first time you put it on for some bizarre reason
@Heycel are you talking about the spacer for those that wear glasses?
@Heycel this is good information I'll definitely put that spacer in and give it a try!
@@RageNukes Hmm, I only used it once so far so this may be the case, here's hoping!
Thanks for the tip on the IPD measuring app! I measured 63.5mm... which matches up to how I found 64mm on the Quest 1 to be best. It appears I'm one of the lucky ones...
Thanks for addressing this issue. FB does not like this solution. There was already an article describing this method.
Facebook REALLY dropped the ball with this headset. IPD, no OLED, facebook account. Like..I'll just wait for a better headset. I don't mind.
Is it normal that controllers and everything close to my face appear blurry in quest 2?
Ty, you're so cool lol
I'm super glad you solve issues like this
I doubt anyone else is gonna try to cover this problem
Thanks so much for this video. I had completely forgotten this hack. It got rid of all my blurriness and artifacts!
I’m around 69, 70 IPD so naturally use setting 3. Still looks absolutely fantastic but I agree there is a slight (very slight) ghosting effect in some places. Not enough to put me off at all though. unfortunately couldn’t use this tip either even if I wanted to as it means I would have to push beyond 68 and it doesn’t go any further unless
I wanted to break
It haha! 😂
In all seriousness though a great headset and my only big issue so far is the greys on darker games compared to the quest 1 probably due to the quest 2 having LCD.
I find the quest 1 a LOT better for those types of games due to the OLED panel.
I was experiencing the weak blacks in "The Walking Dead".. and I'm still waiting on my VROptician lenses because I can't see! Getting some rubber lens protectors though so I can wear my glasses for the meantime. Sucks to get a headset and then feel like I have to wait for something else to even use my glasses without damaging the lenses. Wish they included some rubber stoppers to go around the lenses by default tbh... They're prob going to get a lot of RMA requests due to people damaging the lenses so easily.
Im right there with you on the same ipd settings. It bothered me that the quest one I had perfect vision and then day 1 with the quest 2 I thought I was losing my mind with how my vision felt.
@@xTw1sTeDK1LLAx Oh no I'm around 62 IPD so I'm not really having vision issues.. It's more of my actual eyes that I'm having issues with lol.. I don't want to use the headset with my glasses because I'm afraid to scratch the lenses before I get some lens protection. Luckily I'm getting some rubber glasses stoppers to install tomorrow so I should be good once they come in. Well see though.. I'm just afraid to scratch the lenses with my glasses.

Thank you so much man, I was playing the top golf game and in my back swing whacked the headset and couldn’t see correctly. 👍👍
Really don't get why there isn't a slider since it clearly was something that was possible to put in. Thanks for the vid!
definitely a cost saving measure. Having a manual slider requires two displays, whereas here they cheaped out and put a single display (albeit higher rez). its a shame
Luckily, I’m exactly 58, so it works great for me!! Only thing is, I find the headset as a whole pretty uncomfortable compared to a Vive or Rift S... even with the elite strap.
I bought the VR-cover pleather facial interface from Oculus for $30, so hopefully that helps with the comfort!
I got my Quest2 today. My ipd is 71,8. It is slightly off for me, but not a total disaster. I tried No Man Sky and flying around space is more immersive now than it was with Quest1. I wish that they would think more about big people like me when they designed the headset, but maybe in future there will be more options.
Mine is 73, have you tried using the lens spacer ? I dont wear glasses but I tried it out on setting 3 with the spacer and its very clear
@@WhiteRaven___ , actually no. Is it the one that came with the headset?
Hey Tyriel!
You are the reason I am buying a oculus quest 2!
I have been watching you're videos for 3 years and trust you!.
Thank you.
this really solved my glare issue! thanks Tyriel!
Loving the videos man. I was curious, what is ur current daily driver?
'92 Geo Metro
During the Reverb G2 AMA he stated that the G2 is his daily driver.
This video helped me as I was at 66mm and thought I had to compensate with 63mm. Thank you!
Doesn't seem like a good idea in the long run to me. Keeping between settings could potentially wear out whatever mechanicals there are on the inside that keep it secure, potentially leading to loose lenses.
Glad I still have the Quest 1. IPD slider, OLED screens, better head strap options, the ability to go up to 150% resolution, better battery life and its black so its not going to get scuffed up. Honestly 90Hz would be nice but I've never had a problem with 72Hz, and I don't think 90Hz is worth losing six other features...especially the OLED screens at 150% resolution; sharper image and deeper colors. Love it!
To be fair I do like the Quest 2 for different reasons; mainly the 90Hz and the stronger processor, but hopefully they combine the best of both in a Quest 3 version and add an external 20,000mA battery to the back of the head strap for 15 hours of use and some more balance.
Thank you very much. Now I know for sure that this is not a problem of just a few people.
I always use the maximum IPD and was disappointed that my FOV was limited on this headset, I’m sure I’ll get over it though
Tyriel, from your experience is the quest 2 link at 1.2 SS and 3664 encoded resolution width as good as virtual desktop? For me it's still worse than my rift s in terms of clarity and reading text at a distance.
Me and a bunch of Quest 2 users are experiencing an issue where the headset goes to sleep if you stay still long enough. I'm surprised that nobody has raised this or seen this issue yet from reviewers.
Thanks for this, I used an iOS app to measure my ipd and it says 66.4, so I’ll try your method
my IPD is 67, I use IPD 63 and its clear. IDK it looks good for me. Im happy. It looks better than my RiftS and Quest and its on par with the Index now minus the FOV
UPDATE!! I put it directly between 2-3 and its more clear I think! Good tip for real Ty! Thanks man.
If your IPD is 67mm, why wouldn't you just use the 68mm setting which is almost perfect for you?

Hey guys, new quest 2 owner. Loving the VR world!! If my far IPD is 64.1 and my near IPD is 62.1 which IPD setting should I be using on the Quest 2? Thanks everyone. Solid video Tyriel!!

Hey how to Close the main window to see all enviroment IN cybercity for exaple?
Great vid again Ty, very helpful!
Thanks for the tip!
Ive been wondering if this could work, Great info! Unfortunately I don't think there will ever be a software update to accommodate, fix, or adjust the issue of the built-in 3 IPD settings of the Quest 2 (unless it actually does have a conductive slider or the like, inside like the the OG quest) due to the fundimental differences between the original 2 pannel design and the single panel of the Q2 (I believe the OG Quest originally only had the conductive strip for the IPD slider, solely to gather info on users, but they figured "why not just add a UI element to show users their IPD for extra convenience", after launch and it's discovery and use by a side quest app that did the same lol) If the Quest 2 actually did have that slider inside, I bet they wouldn't have added the 3 positions, letting it slide freely for the whole range, and just use the same IPD UI of the OG Quest w/ incremental software adjustment. I would guess they used a cheaper/ simpler, standard 3 posion switch to tell the single (non-moving) LCD pannel where the lenses are so it can adjust the screen accordingly. I could be wrong, but there's no way to know for sure until we see a tare-down. This problem is one of the nails in the Quest 2 coffin for me personally, you can guess the other big one lol. If anyone can confirm what's inside/ how it works, a bunch of ppl would be very grateful!
My far ipd is 64mm and my close ipd is 61.9 so should the second setting (63mm) be good since it is right in the middle of the 2
even though you said the software wont adjust i notticed the display actually moves along when you adjust the lenses if you do it real slow
2 years later there is no software type of update to get rid of the glare, I thought it was smudges but cleaned the lens with micro fiber cloth , and with a lenspen cleaner and nothing worked. I'm going to try this . I'm measuring at 64.6 which setting would you recommend for me?
This man is a really happy man
I know this is an old video but thank you I was curious what the reason for adjusting the quest to lenses were just happens to be I have a 61.9 mm ipd. I would have never known that without watching this video
@Tyriel Wood My Quest 2 when using a power bank doesn't seem to start to say its charging until it drops some in percentage some and even then it keeps dropping even though it says it charging. I'm using the charging cable that came with it and the power bank is putting out enough power. I have tried different power banks and wires. I was wondering if you are having the same issue?
My IPD is 60mm and I just ordered my Quest 2! Do you think it will fit me?
Alternatively a person could 3d print a brace to hold them in the right position. Or someone really smart will make a retail product for manual IPD setting.
It always seems kinda blurry in my right lense for some reason. I’ve wiped it off with a lense wipe and no luck. Hoping if I put the slider between 1 and 2 it might fix it since my IPD is 61.5 apparently.
Loving my quest 2 though!
I seriously hope there will be coming IPD settings in the Oculus Software becuase i have an IPD of over 68 :(
My IPD is 70... hoped for a trick that works for me too. At least some of you can improve their experience a little 😊
I was getting a lot of glare until I adjusted it between 2 and 3. Fixed it right up.
Reloptix fixed my huge IPD with Prism, and script lens. Magnetic, beautiful!! Amazing company.
I found this “feature” when I first put on my headset because the display that showed the number for my ipd changed in the middle of changing from 2 to 3 and I thought “what if I just kept it in the middle”
When I first got my Quest on the 16, I was able to switch in between IPDs and the display would actually show "IPD 60" or "61", etc., as in between settings. Now, it only say 62 or 58 without showing anything in between.
But the display does still "shift" as if the IPD changed in between settings, so for some reason, they've disabled the onscreen prompt and while they say it's "58", it clearly is not when you're in between settings. Because pushing further to actually reach 58, the screen changes again to adjust the IPD.
Bro for like a year and a half I had forgot that this was an option and I was like man it’s a little bit blurry hopefully they fix that with the next one and I saw this vid tried to adjust it and everything looks amazing Lmao
are you saying that I can adjust between 1&2, 2&3?
hey, im new to VR. is there anyway to know if my quest 2 mic is working or not?
Tyriel I got dumb Question what is the difference between the ipd and pd I went to get new prescription but the machine the doctor used only outputted pd

Nothing you're lack for a better word fucked. Hopefully FB comes out with IPD software. It's shocking they don't.
I have a IPD of 61 and I have it at the 63 setting. I do see a bit of discomfort sometimes so I will try pushing it a little to the closer position. What is kind of weird is I tried all three and even the highest one I could see ok with but with that same discomfort. I guess it's good to just get into that sweet spot more. Maybe you could add a little piece of tape to make it not fall out when your nose bumps it around. People are saying does it change where the screen is at each setting if so I wonder if when you move it between 58 and 63 would it give you more FOV moving it from smaller to larger or larger to smaller from start point.
I am in the same boat as you. With the quest 1 I got the best focus at 61mm when I used my glasses and spacer. With the quest 2 no setting is focused well. I got my choice of slightly cross eyed or super narrow fov and out of focus. Lovely.
I would have paid more for this to not be a piece of junk with a faster chip in it...
Hi Tyriel, please make a video about this. A guy on UA-cam found a solution to change the IPD over 70 with magnetic. I have testet it and it works perfect. My IPD is about 72. Now I have a clear view!
Here his channel ua-cam.com/video/coRgQbpMiVA/v-deo.html
Thanks a lot!
Have a 66 IPD. Both settings 2 and 3 look pretty good to me. Honestly the up and down adjustment is a more noticeable annoyance for me. x) Thankfully with the Elite Strap I can crank the headset down to my face so it doesn't shift around lol.
See everyones eyes are different and not just the IPD. mine is 66.5 neither 2 or 3 was good and 3 had the boxed in bars too, the half way setting hack was a bit better but still not perfect. i had zero issues with the rift s so the quest 2 was returned today
@@marklola12 I think Rift S has the advantage of software IPD adjustment. I hope the Quest 2 gets that on top of the physical adjustment to make the headset better for everyone.
marklola12 did you try the in between setting between 2 and 3?
god, best tips, i am at 2 since one week, i have a 64mm IPD, i managed to slide it to 2 1/4 and image is sharper !
you can also 3d print a small thingi that keeps your lenses somewhere between the settings.
Lol I'm so grateful and lucky. My IPD is exactly 63mm :)
When I do try this, the oculus store game images appear 3D, but not if I'm on IPD setting 2 or 3 - only "2.5". Have they been 3D all along, or is this just a weird side effect??
did you directly poke the lens. I think I died a little when that happened
I wanted to upgrade to the quest 2, but since I have an IPD of 71mm and the quest 2 just feels a lot cheaper, I will have to stick with the original quest.
Thanks Dude! It works for me :)
My IPD is 68.4 which is outside the settings so I dealt in original quest with lens modification, but the printed magnetic rings for them won't stay on the quest 2 like they do almost click into place on the quest. Also I wear glasses.
i have something what is called cylinder eyes. i have to wear glasses... but i do not know if i should buy this or not, i have bought a ''windows mixed reality'' to try and experience vr for my self how ever the i got issues with blurred sides and when i look down om my controllers i see the outlines twice wich makes me dizzy, now i do not know if its a lens issue or anything else.
any tips?
Quick Question: Does the charge cable that comes with the system charge the headset faster or slower than the Oculus Link cable?
I believe it's usb 2.0 and the link is usb 3.1, so would be slower.
I’m a 66.8 and the half way thing just helped a million percent
Very informative! Thanks Tyriel!
nice, my ipd is 66.8 (maybe more or less) so o think i might need this
If yours is in-between setting 1 and 2 put your thumb in the space between the two lenses and it should be perfect
I always set my ipd to the widest on the CV1 which was about 72. I got used to 68 but it hurt my eyes for like an hour.
