his old animations are super well done. It may not be the smoothest thing out there, but it has a clear a fluid path that it follows and has a lot of visual clarity. there is a lot of expression in the characters for what little there is too them.

why tho? every creator wants response to their works . they dedicate time and effort into something and want something back. and it gets frustrating if you upload to a site and might even oblige to their content to get followers or attention and you won't. it's absolutely normal for artists to then leave the page and say its not worth it and it makes you depressed as artist as well if you won't get attention

The internet was different in 2015, cringe culture was a lot more prevalent and normal back then. I could imagine an alternate timeline with 2014/2015 Pyrocynical doing his MLG videos when it suddenly comes out that he's into all the fat farting furry shit, he'd get dogged on viciously. This guy is actually a distant cousin of mine. Met him once or twice when I was a kid. Was really funny and kind of introverted. Crazy to see him here almost 16 years later. Had no idea he garnered so much controversy and did such detestable things.
I think what James lacked was the ability to take heat. He could handle critism for the most part but he couldn't handle people that made fun of him. It was a very "I can dish it out but I can't take it" kinda deal especially with he way he treated the artist whose art he made fun of and the lack luster standup folks. He could make fun of people but he was unable to handle the heat when his fetish got revealed. He put way too much stock into what people thought about him as a person online for someone who acted like an asshole towards a lot of folks. That said, it sounded like towards the end he left because he realized what he did was wrong and he wanted to get better as a person. He knew that the public attention and the power and insecurity it gave him wouldn't make him feel better or let him improve. So he left. Good on him.
This analysis is kind of misguided. There's a difference between making jabs at someone's art and making jabs at someone's behavior; who they are as a person. Both are dickish and I think James recognizes that. Not to say he was never insecure about his art, thinking he's not making good enough content probably made him project that attitude out to what other people did. But having a large group of the internet saying your art is trash is nothing like having that same amount of people ridiculing a behavior that is a lot more personal.

It sucks that James wasn't even that far gone as a person, but only had his mentality degrade over time because the internet continued to ostracize him. At a time when his mentality probably wasn't even as bad, he was ostracized for things that didn't appear to truly be wrong, so when he became ostracized for the questionable things he produced, he would only naturally associate it with the same ostracization he received from the internet when he did nothing wrong. I hope that James can receive help before he's too far gone, and that his creative mind can return to the internet in a more welcoming light. It's not too late for him to atone and for those that pushed him further to forgive and/or be forgiven.

Alone Time is one of my favorite songs because of how much I relate to the song and the fact that the person who made it is almost in the same situation as I am but without help and at worse stakes just hurts me. While yes, James wasn't a perfect person, he was talented and was nice at heart. I hope he is doing well now that he has left the internet, he needs a good ending.

If it isn't, then this got dark real quick. I was under the impression he got mental help and got better. Until proven, this is what I'd like to believe. Edit: Just found out that this is most likely not true. I found the "source" of this claim, which was made back in 2019. I can't post the link here because then my comment will get deleted, but essentially, on November 18th, 2019, this guy on this forum claimed that James committed suicide for some reason. But in 2023, James posted in his twitter that he got medical help and is doing better. He is most likely still alive, and living a normal life somewhere.
The issue is how he treated people. He literally became verbally abusive when his voice actress for c students didn’t want to be apart of the project anymore.
After watching the video, this is my takeaway: anger issues. His anger issues and poor temper spawned other problems like his anxiety, lack of trust and low self esteem after his private fetishes were connected to him and went public (though this is partly his doing by publishing all that). As a severely self conscious and anxious person with poor temper myself (and an ancient deviantart page with a lot of bad art from when I was an underage brainlet) I can pretty much map out how one pebble became a boulder in his case. After a while your brain just cannot stop, you begin overthinking and your will to create vanishes extremely slowly. You're left with no drive, fewer relationships with people in general and a lot of self worth thoughts that keep you back for years on end. He's definitely guilty of a lot of things and weird behaviour but I can sympathise with some of his issues personally.
The way he went out is so interesting, he was such a massive youtuber who somehow managed to escape the public consciousness. it has become such a common way for people to escape now but im surprised how well james was able to just disappear off the face of the planet.
in some ways its hard to feel bad for the dude, but it's also hard to blame him for his life being a complete mess - sure, he could've hidden his fetish stuff better, but i don't see why chastising him for it was really necessary. even despite all the stuff surrounding him im not afraid to admit that creative types is among the best videos on this platform

I grew up watching his animations, and unfortunately was exposed to his fetishes thinking they were okay as a young kid. Looking back on the videos now of him I see the red flags everywhere… Apparently his channel name is back to AnimatedJames instead of discontinued channel now, so he’s still around, just not in public. I hope he’s been getting the help he needs.
Gosh what a trip down memory lane, really well put together BTW. I've been tempted a few times to go on the record about James, since I often have people asking, but there just isn't much for me to say. I was lucky that we ran into each other in the super early days, and luckier still to ride his coat tails a little. He helped me way more than I ever helped him, through animation work and publicity, and I just did a few voices haha. I always tried being a good friend to him, reaching out to check in and offer support, heck was even gonna visit him if I ever went to the states. But idk, he pushed me away whenever I tried. Last we spoke he sent me some kinda script vaguely based off an experience he'd had I think. Always kind of worried about him in the back of my head.

I was a semi-fan of AnimatedJames, and I pretty much only knew him for his mlp content and C students (+creative types). I did notice that he did seem to be a lot less present in the brony circle, but I just kind of assumed he just wasn’t interested in the show anymore, which wasn’t wrong. I had NO idea about any of the more nasty things he had been accused of which certainly changes my views a bit, but overall I still see him as incredibly genuine, especially with how he tried to change later on. AnimatedJames was definitely a formative place of content for me that pretty much goes alongside tobuscus, and all the other animators that fail to reach me right now.
Im in the same boat as you, I only knew about him through his mlp anims(& creative types), and only just recently learned about his controversy.(not really a surprise, I was only a teen when he discontinued the channel, and didnt really pay much attention to non-youtube platforms at the time). I really hope he got professional help, and I hope he's in a better mental state now.

Holy shit. This was a deep dug into my memories. I used to follow up on this guy videos and throughout my childhood it was one of those release from stress sort of thing. I didn't have a youtube account at the time, so I wasn't sure if he was still uploading. But to see you show every single one that I've seen - just goes to show how bless I was to witness that because of the algorithm.

Despite his flaws, I think it was a huge shame what happened to James. I'd chatted with him a few times and as much as I'd like to say I knew him well... He was veeeerrry hard to read. I'd first gotten in contact with him as an invitation to join me in a panel at BronyCon 2016 (Titled "Animation Perspectives", it's actually still on UA-cam) soon after he'd put out the "Creative Types" music video, that of which resonated pretty hard with me. It was designed to be a surprise unveiling of Brony Polka Animated, a music video animation based on his song Brony Polka, and neither he, nor anybody else present at the convention, had any idea I was doing it. I only managed to get the first 3 minutes done of the full 9 minute song, but it was still very exciting (And nerve-wracking) to finally present it during that panel. It took several years for the full music video to be completed however, well after he'd left the internet and cut all ties with everyone he knew. I released it December 2019 and it's roughly at 3 million views at time of writing, and I have no idea if James is one of them. One of the last things we chatted about was whether he'd like if I reached out to him when the video was completed, and he preferred I didn't... As much as I'd like to know what he's up to nowadays I'd prefer to respect that decision, he was pretty adamant that improving his mental health meant entirely cutting off from his life in the MLP fandom. I hope he's doing well.

I haven't considered myself a part of the fandom since like 2015 or so, and it was quite a shock for me when i was feeling nostalgic for the song only to discover the state of his channel. This was such a great video as someone who considered AnimatedJames an inspiration of my old humor when I was young. Although there was one point that was most likely the case of James being online after his disappearance. I remember a good 80% of what was told, but I’ll try and give the best recap I can on it. Back around early 2020, I found James’s Tunblr account where he hosted an AMA in 2019. Fortunately, he stated he was continuing to get help after he disappeared, but people asked him questions from still having fetishes to being online again. In response, he said that he still had a fetish for farting (maybe still furry art in general alongside) and said he didn’t plan to make content unless he really want to on another alias/channel. It could be possible he may be Neurrodic, especially since I noticed the exact same claim of his style being similar to James, followed by his last few tweets of the twitter argument making a lot more sense now than when i initially read what happened. I was also a fan of him, but I think, possibly out of my own personal stubbornness, it might not be him. The white character in James’ fart piece, arguably the Middle Ground MC, and August pretty much have the same hairstyle, while Neuroddic not only had short, somewhat poofy hair, but also chin hair, which is different characterization from how James, on average, portrayed himself in his own projects. So either he planned an entire character inspiration far off from years of at least having one distinct pattern in his MC’s/“self inserts” or it’s just not him, which I still don’t know or might never know. Nonetheless, This video absolutely hits home to me, since I said before he inspired me in humor, but he also inspired me to make content. I watched his decline when I’d keep tabs on his channel and see what happened on his channel with videos cause UA-cam was the only media site I used at the time. Years later, realizing how horrible of a human he was, and then later feeling unsure of him as a person. I appreciate him for all the great memories of a wonderful time on UA-cam, but while he did so many fucked up things and tainted so many projects I loved from him, I always wish the best in his recovery in life and glad I was able to see him shine when he was here. @@Unl1sted. Depends. If he was 20 and she was 16, it depends on the age of consent laws, their birthdays, the type of relationship they had. Also being 18-21 doesn't mean you're mature like an adult. Plenty of people who are early 20s still feel like a teenager. Not to excuse the predatory behavior, its possible that he's on the bridge of liking people younger than him, or he straight up has the inability to break away his feelings from an individual.

Animated James in the time of this controversy seems insecure, depressed, and unable to handle the pressure of the internet. Not only that, but he also seemed to just be a troubled twenty year-old. I have no personal problems with all the fetish stuff, if that's what your into fine, don't shove it down people's throats and keep it 18+ restricted. However, I think he should be left in the past, don't go looking for the guy. All I know is that I hope he is sorry for his wrongs, has changed his art style, and is moving on to bigger things.

At the time there were way worse artists drawing sonics characters in over sexualized situations and people pretty much just accepted that they like drawing Sonic porn of cream the rabbit. You missed one other incident that further adds to the allegations of James' inappropriate behavior with minors. For the Pink Pony music video, it actually wasn't the punch that got it cancelled, it was instead that when he went back to the con the next day, he was going to film a scene with a RD cosplayer where he would, in his words,"shake his ass in her face." But the actress was at the con with her Mother, who wouldn't allow her to participate in the scene. (Thank fucking God, a responsible parent!) He admitted to all of this in that 18+ Panel at Bronycon that you can still watch on UA-cam, playing it off as a funny joke. Now to be fair, there's no explicit evidence that the actress was underaged at the time, but considering James' behavior with teenage girls online, and the fact that this person was young enough to still have to bring a parent to a con, I'm leaning towards that being the case.

Never thought I'd hear you talk about Animated James, brings back a lot of good memories for me. Always hoped he would come back and finish C Students, but I'm sure he found his creative outlet somewhere outside the public eye. Great video as always Tom!
Little off tangent- But I MISS the old UA-cam channel layout! It felt way more personal to decorate the entire background with goofy stuff, than just a single banner, and seeing Jame’s own version just solidifies why I miss it.
I grew up watching AnimatedJames’ content, and I had no idea all this was happening. I’m glad I know now, but knowing this doesn’t take very much away from my nostalgia for his animations. I’m glad I now understand why he left, and I’ll still look back fondly at the times I watched James as I was heading home from middle school every day. Thanks, TurkeyTom.
Kind of thought it was just burn out and depression. If a 36 minute video needs to explain why he left, I know it’s probably gonna be for far more than those reasons. now everytime I remember his existence, I’m going to remember rogue farting in a bush.
I kinda thought Tom would show some other moments on James last year on Twitter, with tweets showing a decline from a warped depression, indulging in sexualizing his female characters, particularly the fox lady from his OSTW series (the grand butt spread pic). I think some part of his dilemma comes from where his dark side fits into his successful craft of child-related projects, he seemed so frustrated as to what his major direction was, while the controversies piled up. It was all just such a tangled tragedy... In some other outcome, I believe James would've been a highly successful animator of unique proportions.
I know James isn't completely without guilt, some of his conduct was pretty sketch and shouldn't be glossed over, but I hope he's doing okay nonetheless. I hope he's able to find himself and string together some semblance of happiness. He made mistakes, but I get the impression from some of his later appearances, and what various people who knew him have said, that he really beats himself up for those mistakes, and I can't find it within myself to keep holding it against him knowing that.
Thing is, yeah that fetish is weird and is a little gross to me but it really isn't anything that should've been used against him the way it was. Wasn't even harmful to anyone and it was that constant stress from how people acted towards him because of it that led to him leave. I’m my opinion, as someone who witnessed his whole history on the internet (Newgrounds, UA-cam, Deviantart, etc.), I believe most people where not upset by his kink. As disgusting as it may be, everyone has a right to be into that sort of thing and I don’t think it’s nobody’s place to judge. What most people, including myself, were upset with James were that he was drawing p0rń of his friends without their knowledge, criticizing his main audience to his kink audience, and him dating that 16 year old girl. I wish this video went more into his alternate Deviantart account’s history because he said trashy things about his main audience to his kink audience. He said something along the lines of him being grateful about creating content on his alternate account because those fans were “way more likable” and “could get along with way easier” than his main audience, and even considered them to be a “like a big family”. If he really felt that way, he should’ve created that specific content and quit doing what he previously did. He then lied about it and ranted about the situation on his website. Even though he was going through depression and I feel a bit sorry for him being treated the way he was, that does not excuse his lying and hypocrisy. I hope he’s doing okay, and received the help he needs because nobody, no matter how horrible they may be, deserves to be depressed and not reach out for help.

As an animation student, the NUMBER 1 THING they tell you is: Make friends. You never know who will get you a job. You do NOT burn bridges, especially when starting out. My manz has a promising start in animation, gets invited to HOST at cons. That is HUGE for animators, and he goes on to bite the hand that feeds? Bruh. He screwed himself over.
Whenever a UA-camr quits many people feel as though that it's for the worse. That leaving means there's something wrong with them. But in James' case, the issue was the channel and it was the internet. Some people can handle millions of eyes them but others really can't. So they cope. Make a cool cynical persona where they don't care about anything. In effect lying to themselves about how they really are. James doesn't owe us anything and we don't owe James anything other than a goodbye. UA-cam and Social media was bad for his mental health. There's a good chance many UA-camrs have similar sentiments but choose to stay on UA-cam or Tiktok or Twitter because they won't know what to do with themselves without it. We kinda developed this culture where everything on the internet matters and that we should torture ourselves as long as we make and receive content. But it's okay to unplug and not have to worry about it. I don't want to come off too Boomer-ish so I guess I'll leave it at that. Wherever James is now I hope he's a better person.

I'll be honest James messed up with those assault jokes but I think he's right on the backlash to the Q&A stuff. My biggest problem with the fandom has always been its aversion to conflict, even basic conflict, like harsh honesty.
I assume the joke was the reference to the Mane 6 mugshots pic, where he brings up which characters would be rapists in prison vs being raped. I remember seeing a video of that panel years and years ago, but had no idea of the drama surrounding it. I still don't really understand the whole thing, but it makes me wonder whether the harassment was genuine or just an overreaction from the original artist who isn't used to dark humor.
I'm not a part of the art community so my only exposure to it comes from when UA-camrs like Tom cover it. The thing I'm always struck by is how socially awkward so many people in the community are. I'm not knocking them for being that way because I understand not everyone is comfortable in social situations. I know I didn't used to be. The problem is that people not being able to communicate effectively results in, as you say, an aversion to conflict or really any even remotely uncomfortable situation. That allows things to fester as people talk about things behind each other's backs and eventually things can spiral out of control.

I’m definitely glad James left on a somewhat happy point I know it seems bittersweet how he just disappeared but he states in his final tweet that he’s happier and doing better and I have a feeling the constant harassment he got online is something he deserves to distance himself from. I remember watching this dude's sonic animations when I was a lad, loved his stuff man, so nostalgic. About him leaving the internet, it just feels like he got old, realised he was getting old, remembered all the dumbass things he did when he was younger and decided now is a good time to open the next chapter of my life and leave everything else behind, including his online presense. his old animations are super well done. It may not be the smoothest thing out there, but it has a clear a fluid path that it follows and has a lot of visual clarity. there is a lot of expression in the characters for what little there is too them.

I think what James lacked was the ability to take heat. He could handle critism for the most part but he couldn't handle people that made fun of him. It was a very "I can dish it out but I can't take it" kinda deal especially with he way he treated the artist whose art he made fun of and the lack luster standup folks. He could make fun of people but he was unable to handle the heat when his fetish got revealed. He put way too much stock into what people thought about him as a person online for someone who acted like an asshole towards a lot of folks.
That said, it sounded like towards the end he left because he realized what he did was wrong and he wanted to get better as a person. He knew that the public attention and the power and insecurity it gave him wouldn't make him feel better or let him improve. So he left. Good on him.

This analysis is kind of misguided. There's a difference between making jabs at someone's art and making jabs at someone's behavior; who they are as a person. Both are dickish and I think James recognizes that. Not to say he was never insecure about his art, thinking he's not making good enough content probably made him project that attitude out to what other people did. But having a large group of the internet saying your art is trash is nothing like having that same amount of people ridiculing a behavior that is a lot more personal.

It sucks that James wasn't even that far gone as a person, but only had his mentality degrade over time because the internet continued to ostracize him. At a time when his mentality probably wasn't even as bad, he was ostracized for things that didn't appear to truly be wrong, so when he became ostracized for the questionable things he produced, he would only naturally associate it with the same ostracization he received from the internet when he did nothing wrong.
I hope that James can receive help before he's too far gone, and that his creative mind can return to the internet in a more welcoming light. It's not too late for him to atone and for those that pushed him further to forgive and/or be forgiven.

This story actually makes me sad. Alone Time is one of my favorite songs because of how much I relate to the song and the fact that the person who made it is almost in the same situation as I am but without help and at worse stakes just hurts me. While yes, James wasn't a perfect person, he was talented and was nice at heart. I hope he is doing well now that he has left the internet, he needs a good ending.

I was under the impression he got mental help and got better. Until proven, this is what I'd like to believe.
Edit: Just found out that this is most likely not true. I found the "source" of this claim, which was made back in 2019. I can't post the link here because then my comment will get deleted, but essentially, on November 18th, 2019, this guy on this forum claimed that James committed suicide for some reason. But in 2023, James posted in his twitter that he got medical help and is doing better. He is most likely still alive, and living a normal life somewhere.
The issue is how he treated people. He literally became verbally abusive when his voice actress for c students didn’t want to be apart of the project anymore.
He was also a pedophile.
After watching the video, this is my takeaway: anger issues. His anger issues and poor temper spawned other problems like his anxiety, lack of trust and low self esteem after his private fetishes were connected to him and went public (though this is partly his doing by publishing all that).
As a severely self conscious and anxious person with poor temper myself (and an ancient deviantart page with a lot of bad art from when I was an underage brainlet) I can pretty much map out how one pebble became a boulder in his case. After a while your brain just cannot stop, you begin overthinking and your will to create vanishes extremely slowly. You're left with no drive, fewer relationships with people in general and a lot of self worth thoughts that keep you back for years on end.
He's definitely guilty of a lot of things and weird behaviour but I can sympathise with some of his issues personally.
The way he went out is so interesting, he was such a massive youtuber who somehow managed to escape the public consciousness. it has become such a common way for people to escape now but im surprised how well james was able to just disappear off the face of the planet.

I've been tempted a few times to go on the record about James, since I often have people asking, but there just isn't much for me to say.
I was lucky that we ran into each other in the super early days, and luckier still to ride his coat tails a little. He helped me way more than I ever helped him, through animation work and publicity, and I just did a few voices haha.
I always tried being a good friend to him, reaching out to check in and offer support, heck was even gonna visit him if I ever went to the states. But idk, he pushed me away whenever I tried.
Last we spoke he sent me some kinda script vaguely based off an experience he'd had I think. Always kind of worried about him in the back of my head.

Say what you will about the guy, but James at least respected his audience enough to leave his content up. A lot of other content creators associated with MLP tend to just nuke everything out of shame, or when they want to grift other fandoms.

I was a semi-fan of AnimatedJames, and I pretty much only knew him for his mlp content and C students (+creative types). I did notice that he did seem to be a lot less present in the brony circle, but I just kind of assumed he just wasn’t interested in the show anymore, which wasn’t wrong. I had NO idea about any of the more nasty things he had been accused of which certainly changes my views a bit, but overall I still see him as incredibly genuine, especially with how he tried to change later on. AnimatedJames was definitely a formative place of content for me that pretty much goes alongside tobuscus, and all the other animators that fail to reach me right now.

Im in the same boat as you, I only knew about him through his mlp anims(& creative types), and only just recently learned about his controversy.(not really a surprise, I was only a teen when he discontinued the channel, and didnt really pay much attention to non-youtube platforms at the time). I really hope he got professional help, and I hope he's in a better mental state now.

Despite his flaws, I think it was a huge shame what happened to James. I'd chatted with him a few times and as much as I'd like to say I knew him well... He was veeeerrry hard to read.
I'd first gotten in contact with him as an invitation to join me in a panel at BronyCon 2016 (Titled "Animation Perspectives", it's actually still on UA-cam) soon after he'd put out the "Creative Types" music video, that of which resonated pretty hard with me. It was designed to be a surprise unveiling of Brony Polka Animated, a music video animation based on his song Brony Polka, and neither he, nor anybody else present at the convention, had any idea I was doing it. I only managed to get the first 3 minutes done of the full 9 minute song, but it was still very exciting (And nerve-wracking) to finally present it during that panel.
It took several years for the full music video to be completed however, well after he'd left the internet and cut all ties with everyone he knew. I released it December 2019 and it's roughly at 3 million views at time of writing, and I have no idea if James is one of them. One of the last things we chatted about was whether he'd like if I reached out to him when the video was completed, and he preferred I didn't... As much as I'd like to know what he's up to nowadays I'd prefer to respect that decision, he was pretty adamant that improving his mental health meant entirely cutting off from his life in the MLP fandom.
I hope he's doing well.

I haven't considered myself a part of the fandom since like 2015 or so, and it was quite a shock for me when i was feeling nostalgic for the song only to discover the state of his channel. This was such a great video as someone who considered AnimatedJames an inspiration of my old humor when I was young. Although there was one point that was most likely the case of James being online after his disappearance.
I remember a good 80% of what was told, but I’ll try and give the best recap I can on it.
Back around early 2020, I found James’s Tunblr account where he hosted an AMA in 2019. Fortunately, he stated he was continuing to get help after he disappeared, but people asked him questions from still having fetishes to being online again. In response, he said that he still had a fetish for farting (maybe still furry art in general alongside) and said he didn’t plan to make content unless he really want to on another alias/channel.
It could be possible he may be Neurrodic, especially since I noticed the exact same claim of his style being similar to James, followed by his last few tweets of the twitter argument making a lot more sense now than when i initially read what happened. I was also a fan of him, but I think, possibly out of my own personal stubbornness, it might not be him. The white character in James’ fart piece, arguably the Middle Ground MC, and August pretty much have the same hairstyle, while Neuroddic not only had short, somewhat poofy hair, but also chin hair, which is different characterization from how James, on average, portrayed himself in his own projects. So either he planned an entire character inspiration far off from years of at least having one distinct pattern in his MC’s/“self inserts” or it’s just not him, which I still don’t know or might never know.
Nonetheless, This video absolutely hits home to me, since I said before he inspired me in humor, but he also inspired me to make content. I watched his decline when I’d keep tabs on his channel and see what happened on his channel with videos cause UA-cam was the only media site I used at the time. Years later, realizing how horrible of a human he was, and then later feeling unsure of him as a person. I appreciate him for all the great memories of a wonderful time on UA-cam, but while he did so many fucked up things and tainted so many projects I loved from him, I always wish the best in his recovery in life and glad I was able to see him shine when he was here. Thank you for so much for this well made video, seriously

Plenty of people who are early 20s still feel like a teenager. Not to excuse the predatory behavior, its possible that he's on the bridge of liking people younger than him, or he straight up has the inability to break away his feelings from an individual.

Animated James in the time of this controversy seems insecure, depressed, and unable to handle the pressure of the internet. Not only that, but he also seemed to just be a troubled twenty year-old. I have no personal problems with all the fetish stuff, if that's what your into fine, don't shove it down people's throats and keep it 18+ restricted. However, I think he should be left in the past, don't go looking for the guy. All I know is that I hope he is sorry for his wrongs, has changed his art style, and is moving on to bigger things.

At the time there were way worse artists drawing sonics characters in over sexualized situations and people pretty much just accepted that they like drawing Sonic porn of cream the rabbit. I had left a nostalgic comment on his Creative Types video since it was one of my favorites as a kid, when someone replied to me and recommended this video of yours. I had absolutely no idea about any of the dark shit he fell into. I do hope after leaving he worked to be a better person, my favorite part of Creative Types was the raw emotion i could feel from it. despite the welcome back from the community, he chose to leave the worst memories of his behavior behind. You missed one other incident that further adds to the allegations of James' inappropriate behavior with minors. For the Pink Pony music video, it actually wasn't the punch that got it cancelled, it was instead that when he went back to the con the next day, he was going to film a scene with a RD cosplayer where he would, in his words,"shake his ass in her face." But the actress was at the con with her Mother, who wouldn't allow her to participate in the scene. (Thank fucking God, a responsible parent!) He admitted to all of this in that 18+ Panel at Bronycon that you can still watch on UA-cam, playing it off as a funny joke. Now to be fair, there's no explicit evidence that the actress was underaged at the time, but considering James' behavior with teenage girls online, and the fact that this person was young enough to still have to bring a parent to a con, I'm leaning towards that being the case.

I grew up watching AnimatedJames’ content, and I had no idea all this was happening. I’m glad I know now, but knowing this doesn’t take very much away from my nostalgia for his animations. I’m glad I now understand why he left, and I’ll still look back fondly at the times I watched James as I was heading home from middle school every day.

Kind of thought it was just burn out and depression. If a 36 minute video needs to explain why he left, I know it’s probably gonna be for far more than those reasons. now everytime I remember his existence, I’m going to remember rogue farting in a bush.
I kinda thought Tom would show some other moments on James last year on Twitter, with tweets showing a decline from a warped depression, indulging in sexualizing his female characters, particularly the fox lady from his OSTW series (the grand butt spread pic).
I think some part of his dilemma comes from where his dark side fits into his successful craft of child-related projects, he seemed so frustrated as to what his major direction was, while the controversies piled up. It was all just such a tangled tragedy... In some other outcome, I believe James would've been a highly successful animator of unique proportions.
I know James isn't completely without guilt, some of his conduct was pretty sketch and shouldn't be glossed over, but I hope he's doing okay nonetheless. I hope he's able to find himself and string together some semblance of happiness. He made mistakes, but I get the impression from some of his later appearances, and what various people who knew him have said, that he really beats himself up for those mistakes, and I can't find it within myself to keep holding it against him knowing that.

I’m my opinion, as someone who witnessed his whole history on the internet (Newgrounds, UA-cam, Deviantart, etc.), I believe most people where not upset by his kink. As disgusting as it may be, everyone has a right to be into that sort of thing and I don’t think it’s nobody’s place to judge. What most people, including myself, were upset with James were that he was drawing p0rń of his friends without their knowledge, criticizing his main audience to his kink audience, and him dating that 16 year old girl. I wish this video went more into his alternate Deviantart account’s history because he said trashy things about his main audience to his kink audience. He said something along the lines of him being grateful about creating content on his alternate account because those fans were “way more likable” and “could get along with way easier” than his main audience, and even considered them to be a “like a big family”. If he really felt that way, he should’ve created that specific content and quit doing what he previously did. He then lied about it and ranted about the situation on his website. Even though he was going through depression and I feel a bit sorry for him being treated the way he was, that does not excuse his lying and hypocrisy. I hope he’s doing okay, and received the help he needs because nobody, no matter how horrible they may be, deserves to be depressed and not reach out for help.

Whenever a UA-camr quits many people feel as though that it's for the worse.
That leaving means there's something wrong with them.
But in James' case, the issue was the channel and it was the internet.
Some people can handle millions of eyes them but others really can't. So they cope. Make a cool cynical persona where they don't care about anything. In effect lying to themselves about how they really are.
James doesn't owe us anything and we don't owe James anything other than a goodbye.
UA-cam and Social media was bad for his mental health.
There's a good chance many UA-camrs have similar sentiments but choose to stay on UA-cam or Tiktok or Twitter because they won't know what to do with themselves without it.
We kinda developed this culture where everything on the internet matters and that we should torture ourselves as long as we make and receive content.
But it's okay to unplug and not have to worry about it.

I'll be honest James messed up with those assault jokes but I think he's right on the backlash to the Q&A stuff. My biggest problem with the fandom has always been its aversion to conflict, even basic conflict, like harsh honesty.

I assume the joke was the reference to the Mane 6 mugshots pic, where he brings up which characters would be rapists in prison vs being raped. I remember seeing a video of that panel years and years ago, but had no idea of the drama surrounding it. I still don't really understand the whole thing, but it makes me wonder whether the harassment was genuine or just an overreaction from the original artist who isn't used to dark humor.
I'm not a part of the art community so my only exposure to it comes from when UA-camrs like Tom cover it. The thing I'm always struck by is how socially awkward so many people in the community are. I'm not knocking them for being that way because I understand not everyone is comfortable in social situations. I know I didn't used to be. The problem is that people not being able to communicate effectively results in, as you say, an aversion to conflict or really any even remotely uncomfortable situation. That allows things to fester as people talk about things behind each other's backs and eventually things can spiral out of control.
I like your channel the most because 98% of the people you talk about I've never heard of and it gives me a good idea of their start and what type of Channel they had keep up the good work

The history of him is very fascinating and surprising, I like how you explain his rise and fall story of how he’s a popular animator in the community and how he falls from grace because of the trouble he makes. I know it seems bittersweet how he just disappeared but he states in his final tweet that he’s happier and doing better and I have a feeling the constant harassment he got online is something he deserves to distance himself from.
It’s obvious the bullying he faced is what forced him into a depression in the first place and I really hope he’s out there and happy right now
I remember watching this dude's sonic animations when I was a lad, loved his stuff man, so nostalgic.
About him leaving the internet, it just feels like he got old, realised he was getting old, remembered all the dumbass things he did when he was younger and decided now is a good time to open the next chapter of my life and leave everything else behind, including his online presense.

okay say what you will but Creative Types spoke to me so much growing up. i think i was like 11 or 12 when i watched it but i struggled sm with suicide and self esteem and bullying etc and it genuinely helped me. i remember i used to watch that video on loop. i didnt know anything about his controversy, i just knew him for his mlp videos because i was a kid who liked mlp

on the Edd Gould thing, this was sort of how the animation community treated his illness and death, with the best way they could, animations and comedy.
