I know these aren't court hearings but I feel like people that refuse to give a direct answer or a plausible reason they don't have a direct answer they should be held in contempt or something. The fact that they can get away with saying nothing when the answers are clearly in their bills and policies is beyond ridiculous. That's what children do, not leaders.

should be same rules as court witnesses. note there are political mechanisms to keep this in check. ive watched cspan so long, its always like this. if they answer questions in 8 seconds they would end up answering a lot more questions. it wouldnt be effective for their clique.
The court comparison is a good one. In court the judge would ask the congressman to stop making a speech and ask a question. Then when the witness answered the question with an other than yes/no and the Congressman badgered him, the defense attorney would object. The Congressman didn’t really care whether the question was answered or not. It was a loaded question. The defendant loses, however it is answered. The Congressman was successful in making his talking points with the jury/constituents. As DOR says, it’s always like this on cspan. You know what they say about attorneys, never ask a question you don’t know the answer to.

The Congressman says up front he does not have any questions. He is simply interested in making a speech. He doesn’t want to obtain any real information, just provide his own talking points. Then ends with a yes/no question that does not allow any explanation or more complex answer. Politicians on both sides of the aisle do it.
Both sides do the same shit tho. Its like if they are to give a yes or no answer, they will get held to that statement in the future.

That is sooooo true. They likely have all taken the course in how to evade, avoid, distract & provide everything else but the actual truth. Most of these ppl have also taken the refresher course ! No doubt their lawyers and ‘consultants’ have coached them for many hours BEFORE going to the committee or subcommittee to give their so called ‘testimony’. Smug, smarmy, jerks who need a few years of jail time.
It is a delay tactic, each person has a running clock to ask questions and every second the witnesses eat up eats away at time for another question. It is why you have seen a number of the representatives recently say "you are not answering so my next question is" or something to that effect.
Yeah, they're just trying to take up time, so they can run down the clock without giving any substantive answer to anything.
Total respect for congressman Mast kept his composure while delivering blows as the chairman lost his cool and cried about being respectful while being disrespectful at the same time.
The legal citizens of America need more politicians like Mr Mast.
