E60 250k miles here. I can confirm everything he said. Plus more. Much, much more. Still a great car though. Luckily, I do all my own repairs, otherwise my car would have been parted out long ago due to high shop labor costs.
First of all Nathan you are awesome. Bmws will give you a love hate relationship !! I love my 2010 535i. Joy to drive, but it doesn't always return the love. It kicks you hard !! Replaced alternator Replaced belt tensioner Replaced serpentine belt Replaced oil cooler gasket Replaced filter housing gasket Replaced hpfp Replaced valve cover gasket Replaced vanos solenoids for maintenance oem. Really restored power Replaced map sensors for maintenance oem. Also restored power and idle is very smooth. Replaced lower control arms Replaced motor mounts Resealed oil pan Replaced power steering dipstick gasket Replaced oil filler cap Replaced fuel cap Replaced Coolant reservoir Replaced upper radiator hose Walnut blasted intake Replaced diverter valves Replaced fuel injectors index 12 Replaced Pcv valve breather hose Replaced battery Replaced water neck and hose Still have original starter Still have original water pump and thermostat. I already bought all 3 of these items for standby. OEM. All this on top of your normal Spark plugs Oil change Air filter Tires Breaks Etc This car will break you. This will probably be my last BMW. I have a 2008 f150 with 270,000 miles. No issues. No leaks. Original starter, alternator, waterpump etc. Hasn't given me any problems !! Just your basic maintenance. Oil changes, tires, brakes etc.
I have an E60...2004 model...bought it 2009. Now 190k km. Total repair costs in 10 years maybe 1000 USD without the costs for regular stuff like breaks, filters and fluids. I had non of these issues in 10 years driving...
With the exception of lower control arms and the water pump, I have never had any of these issues you are talking about on my 2007 530xi with 120K miles
In the 209,000 miles on mine, I have replaced (not counting regular preventive maintenance like fluids, lights, tires, brakes, and regular bigger service interval items), a vacuum leak, tie rod, drivers cupholder and, the active steering module. She's been so good to me!
I’ve owned my 2008 528i Sport Package since 2011 with 23k. Now she has 244k and I’ve driven her from NC to LA(2012) with 30k & back(2014) with 42k then again 2020 with 213k & back to NC(2022) with 236k. Only regular maintenance like full tuneup every 60k with transmission flush and filter change, oil change every 3k. And replaced coolant reservoir, fuel pump, valve cover gasket, replaced water pump and timing belt as preventative maintenance. My AC Compressor pulley and serpentine belt snapped 2 weeks ago and she still didn’t leave me stranded lol. I was able to limp(3miles) to the only other mechanic(other than me)that I’ll let touch my car. I have a bond with this car like I’ve never had with the other 30 plus that I’ve owned!
I own 520d made in 2008, UK. Mileage currently 341k miles. Done all mounts, all suspension bits many times, all bushings including rear frame, one broken spring, crank wheel many times, egr, bought new turbo recently, dpf, knob for I'd rive replaced, screenwash bottle, wiper arm replaced, timing chain done as mine is n47, steering rack replaced, water pump failed once, battery lasted 7 years from factory, replaced, intake manifold flaps decided once to drop in and support valves, so got rid of that which was expensive, oil leak from plastic oil bayonet fitting, replaced a hose for intercooler, ac condenser had a hole, replaced, gearbox sump - repalced when heat bent it out of shape once. Other than those whatever can loosely be called maintanence. This is from top of my head. Considering mileage on it I still think this is a good car.
I do have an E60 6 cillinder M54 from 2004, bought and owned since 2008 until today. Most things I do not recognize at all! Only thing beside maintanance was a new battery and alternator, wiring loom in the trunk, and control arms and the waterpump I've exchanged preventive, It was working but I wanted to avoid overheating when it would start to fail eventually. Only leakage that I've had was the oil filter housing starting to leak, changed it myself. , i bought it with 80.000km and now it's on 215.000km. Spread over 11 years that's nothing! It's the BMW that I've owned the longest time and I am not planning to sell it, because it's so perfect and keeps on going without problems or leakage or whatever. I think it's also a big deal who was the previous owner, how did he use it, how you maintain your car and how you drive it, you can break everything when you do not maintain it or drive it like an 18 year old on steroids.
The engine issues with these arise thanks to the ridiculously long service periods. Most owners confided in BMWs ability to keep these cars in shape but it ended very badly. Best thing is to get one that's enjoyed a service every 8 to 10k miles.
I used to own a BMW 535d. The first month I was happy because of the power and luxury feeling. From there, things started to go wrong even though the car had low mileage and only one owner before me. Half of these things you talk about happened to my car and my wallet and frankly, watching this It got me sick to my stomach thinking about how much i spent on the damn car. Then I got a brand new Audi and after a year similar things started to happen to that car.. foggy headlights, tierods, ball joints, and other stuff, electrical issues because it was a hybrid, etc. My latest car is a Lexus and so far so good. I love the way germans design their cars but they are not reliable and for sure endless money pits (as Scott Kilmer says). It is just a shame the Japanese manufacturers don´t sell cars with more powerful engines because that would be the end for the German cars. Thanks for keeping it real!
We are so lucky in the UK that we have an annual inspection test that would rule a car not roadworthy for most of these problems (the mechanical ones - obviously we don't have to make sure our cupholders work) so owners are forced to keep them maintained. Here I would rather buy a 150k+ BMW than a 100k+ one because by 150 the water pump, power steering pump and alternator have hopefully died and been replaced whereas they are upcoming on a 100k car. That's just my experience from buying a handful of higher mileage BMW's in the UK. Maybe I just got lucky but this philosophy has worked out for me so far. That being said, it makes the cost of owning a car for a period of time much more in the UK than in the US because you can't just sell it on when it has too many problems as you have been forced by law to fix them.
Thank you so much man. Just bought mine 4 days ago. Thank goodness the previous owner did most of the hard stuff and took care of it. But now that I just saw this video there’s a lot more to be done
I have a 2006 530xi. My car has 267k miles. I bought it at 224k. 6MT. No CEL. Just had the harmonic balancer pulley break and leave the chat. But for the past 43k miles it's been a super reliable car. No oil leaks so far. I must be lucky
This video is accurate! I’ve had nearly every problem he stated go wrong with my 2006 530i. It’s very obvious that whoever had the car before me just drove it into the ground before getting rid of it. Thank you for this video! Now, I’ve a guide on what needs to be fixed or to look out for.
I just got a e60 with 350xxx miles not running for free. Replaced literally everything you stated besides engine mounts, and replaced the coil packs before I even seen this video and got it running without check engine lights in 2 days 🤘🤘😁 only issue is the driving stability issue, I feel it in the steering wheel. Thank you for your videos, I’ve been watching them religiously lol
Fix the oil pan gasket, new vanos solenoids, oil change and filter, oil filter housing leak, new valve cover and gasket and eccentric shaft sensor, change to the Bosch four prong spark plugs and you’ll be good for 100k miles again. You may get an ignition coil that fails but just put a little extra back for the car every month and you’ll be ok for a long long time. At least another ten years.
MENDEZ_RAMIREZ in your opinion, why would a dealership sale a vehicle $3k-$5k less than the actual kbb value while the car is under 100k miles.....NO ACCIDENTS.....ONE OWNER......& has the CARFAX ?
I hope you didn't forget the wheels and low profile tires. I bought my first ever 2007 750LI and the first day the rear 21inch wheel had a hairline crack on the outside inner lip. It took me about four days and was lucky to find a shop that repairs wheels "Quest Wheels" in Cleveland about an hr away. It was worth fixing it through them since I only paid $140 if compared to a used matching wheel for $499. The second bad thing is the hood latch cables. I only had it for a week now and I am taking it to the mechanic to get the hood opened and repair it. Not to mention the coolant signal is on indicating it low and I cant fill the radiator until we get the hood opened which is another project. And the check engine is one which I hope is due to low coolant. My fear is having a blown head gasket. But the low coolant could be a leaking reservoir that you have mentioned. I will update you and keep fingers crossed. Despite these issues, I am still optimistic and hope I'm not wrong. Thanks for sharing this video.
Just recently got a 2010 550i M sport. To be fair, it only had around 70k miles AND the previous owners were really caring about their car. Also it’s been almost a year and I have only driven it around 3-4k miles. I have a Honda that I use as a beater and this one I tend to work on and drive only on special occasions. BUT, man it’s a beautiful and very powerful car. First month though was already doing maintenance on it LOL
FWIW YMMV ETC. I have had 4 BMWs that I bought with > 100K miles, and only one of them was what I would consider a lemon (E30 convertible with front end issues due to a bent frame... hard to fault BMW for this one!). None of them was as bad as, for example, my wife's old Quad 4 Buick or her Ford Tempo. About on par with her Subaru. Just make sure to get a PPI from a mechanic who is intimately familiar with the model you're buying. You do need to keep up with the maintenance, and a good mechanic who you can trust... especially if your car has a lot of gadgets like rear seat warmers, folding mirrors, automatic window shades, etc. But this is true with any car, really. BMW is primarily an engine company, so you are less likely to have engine problems such as a broken crankshaft -- as long as you don't neglect the check engine lights. The rest of the chassis... who knows. FWIW I am about to buy an E61 with 150K - if I remember this thread in a couple of years, I'll post an update.
There is no difference in cars in EU/US market only the mentality how to treat the cars. If you properly change fluid (all) and do oilchange more regulary than what the computer tells you it will be fine. Change oil at 100 000 km or less and you will avoid most leaks. Everything is about maintainence but in US there is a buy and throw mentality that the second or third owner is seeing when they buy a used car and says its crap.
Wow! Mine just turned 104,000. Had much of what you’ve mentioned. Thought I was out of the woods. Never thought how much lies ahead! You got me thinking, now!
Im looking to purchase one of these this week up coming week. 2010, 98k Miles. He's asking 6900. Water pump has been changed and various other stuff. Your guys thoughts?
Just aquired a 05 e60 525i (M54 engine). Just hit 150k miles. No codes just yet. Can't figure out how to update it. Had an CIC upgrade I think. Its my first BMW. Im learning this video really helped me. thank you
80% of your things that will go wrong are same for the E46. Many people will drive their cars until they will not move and then call the shop. Most 12+ year old /100,000+ mile cars will have a ton of deferred maintenance regardless of make. If the interior looks like crap. rest assured there has been no maintenance done.
I've got a 2008 535i running on 19psi 500tq at the wheel. So far I have done full aluminum water pump hoses thermo, metal water fitting like the one you showed, oil filter housing gasket (after finding oil in the water pump), valve cover gasket, ecu mosfet upgrade after frying the ecu, expansion tank, rear turbo cooling line (hardest thing yet). Mods are charge pipe 50mm bov, retro fit stepped intercooler, catless downpipes, gapped f80 m3 spark plugs fresh coils (ngk) 340lph ethanol compatible low pressure fuel pump and fresh filter, running on mid e50 stage 2+
@Nathan's BMW workshop I have a question. I wonder whats my e60 530xd 2008 vibration from its around 90-130 km/h and when im driving the steering wheel is shaking also very evident when going downhill and breaking litttle bit harder and my wheels are worn not symetrically. Do you know what could it be? Also antother thing is my diagnostics shows low air flow in egr ventile, i changed it also deleted it and it still poped out, i also changed lambda sond and thermostat and many hosese. Any tips. Car feels like it lack some power like the vacuum is not creating or its without turbo, but turbo is ok? Any tips Please im getting out of options what to check and change
Have to agree with at least 15 issues stated here, that I have encountered on my 2004 e60. The recurring ones are mechanical water pump failure(twice), radiator hose leakages(twice), rid bearings(once) to name few. Few more issues you will face one time or another is trunk not being able to close, that is because of the wires leading to your trunk getting chewed on by opening and closing of trunk. Another issue is that of cracked diaphragm leading to air intake issues.
So wanted to buy one of these, but after watching your videos I not sure, I have a 02 Lexus ES still driving it, bought it at 10k+ miles, now its 195+miles the only thing I had done or fix: new tires, new windshield x2, new battery x2, new starter, new taillight bulbs x2, new headlight bulb, and only done two oil change ever since I bought it
this is so accurate. I have a 2008 bmw 528xi. I have had it for 2 years now. I bought it at 114,000 miles. I have put about 30,000 miles on it in the 2 years (142,000). I have replaced right front axle twice, left front axle once, water cooling pump, starter, all 4 control arms, cupholders bad of course, 2 ignition coils, 5 tires, right now I have abs lights and tire monitoring lights, and still counting.
Literally was gonna grab an E61, seemed well taken care of....Didn’t hear good things, had a bad feeling PASSING ON THAT ONE....I remember when BMW’s were nice. I have a long memory:)
I’ve had a 2004 530d e61 for the past 7 years with 240’000 miles and still pulls like a train and running amazing doesn’t use leak any oil between services ..... control arms and rear ball joint do go but they do on any car ! Service with good oil and do service the gearbox...sealed for life is a ridiculous idea. Also do the swirl flap mod and your exhaust manifold will crack ! Personally think he’s being a bit harsh
Get a E39 or E46 to save you the trouble. Mine is still going after two in a half years after the vacuum leaks and cooling issues were solved the first year of ownership. Me and my fathers friend took out the expansion tank, water pump, cleaned the whole air intake after replacing the intake boot, three oil changes, replaced the suspension with fresh front control arm bushings and a few maintenance items. First time I ever learned how to work on a something euro than domestic like my Trans Am WS6.
I have a 530i 07 msport wagon and changed starter, gearbox link at the bottom of the auto stick, sump/oil filter housing gaskets, battery, vanos solonoids, plugs and coils, disa valves, valve lifters but all expected and there will be more. Why? because I love this thing and in great condition. I wouldn't say unreliable just needs some attention if getting on in years as we all do. I also bought a 21yo Porsche 986 a few months ago and thrown money at that also but whats the cost of a new car and depreciation??? Should you buy one, maybe not but maybe yes(I was a BMW tech on bikes)
I've had quite a few of these problem with my 550i E60. I've learned a lot about BMW's over the course of the last 7 years. I think a good mention is the passenger occupancy seat sensor. I had to run a 1k ohm resistor to bypass it. Worse case the passenger air will go off in an accident even though no passenger in the car.
The safety bypass has to do with airbag timings. I had done the bypass in my E61. When i got my E60 i had actual software and updated my airbags. I noticed you needed to sync the timings of all the airbag components, which i did and the airbag light dispeared again.
Its called wear n tear, 98% of all cars with over 100k miles will have these issues, I had a chevy Tahoe, Sierra Denali, Volvo, Acura etc, all needed those maintenanced after 100k to 130k,
Ive owned an e60 for 6 years/70k miles. It now has 105k. Im very lucky to have a quality independent that knows about these common issues. He has helped me do preventative maintenance and take care of most of them. You gotta be willing to spend a grand or two but its worth it.
My 530xi over the past 3 years I had to replace oil filter housing gasket, tensioner pulley and serpentine belt, few coils, spark plugs, control arms, water leak in the back due to clogged drains. Currently water gets into the rear passenger door, my key fobs stopped working wirelessly (battery still good so idk the reason) oil pan leak. Pretty nice car
BMW is not the same than before. The e39 was the last 5series who was durable and reliable. The newer cars are crap in my opinion. I am a german guy and i love BMW before. In my live i had a e28, e34, e39 and now a e60 lci with the crap n53 engine. Problems with the electric, with the injectors, nox sensor, ccv valve, high pressure pump and so on. I want back my e39.
So I'm basically looking at a lot of issues with my E60. I have a hundred and 181,000 miles on my car. So far I haven't had any issues. I did have to replace the whole front end cuz my control arms were bad and my shocks. And I had to replace the starter but that's about it. I've had this car for over a year with no issues. I hope to God I don't have the issues you're talking about bro. I still love driving this E60 530i. And as of now since I replaced all the front end components and replace the tires is driving like it's new. Damn I wish I didn't read your comment lol Edit: 'UpDate' At the time of writing this I had 180,000 miles, I wrote 81,000 with was a typo. Now I'm at 183,893 mile. Back and forth from Long island to Central NJ. So far so good as of August 5, 2019. Side note I have the n52 engine if that makes a difference. I hope it does lmao
E39 was a such a great car, i had one when I was living in Germany, what a great car it a was, comfort driving, acceleration, ... man, it used to be good car manufactured. I guess only selected people had a chance to drive and use e39, .... after e39, you get so picky to other car sitting inside telling about lack of comfort, speed, noise insulation.
My brother owns a e39. Crappy car with lots of electronical problem and engine problems. Turbo broke down, alternator broke down and many more. Its not about reliability. All cars all reliable, some just need high maintenance.
Last year I bought a 2006 E60 525 6 speed manual from an automotive engineer who is ahead of quality control for North America for a parts company. The car had 380,000 kilometres ( 238,000 miles ). I still had to spend over $4,000 to get it to where I was happy with it. Full disclosure, that includes Michelin Sport 4S tires 275/35/18 rear, 245/40/18 front, which was a lot of money just for the tires, but still, this car was owned by a car expert and still needed money spent on it.
Picked me up 07 530i - 141K. No service records but the valve cover gasket was done. 156K now and no issues at all. For what I paid for it , $6700, black on black fully loaded it’s just a wonderful road car that I drive when I’m not driving one of my pick up trucks. I’ve done Some 500+ Mile roadtrips at 30 miles a gallon.
Stixnfeet why on earth did you pay $6700??? Look on Craigslist..07’ 530i’s are going for like $4,500 (nice condition) with that mileage. I also picked up a 07 530i exactly one year ago for $5,000 with 140k.
@@bobsmithinson2050 I hear ya. Drove it to 165K with only $130 tire rod repair. Just sold it, Got five grand for it, so I drove the car about 24,000 miles for $1700. Not bad in my book!
2 minutes 40 seconds in and already I don't know if it's going to be a good video, but DAMN! I love me some of that super organized peg board in the garage. If this fella did a video about tool organization I'd be up for that!
It's confusing to watch your videos. You talk so negatively about BMWs and how everything breaks and everything is going to fall apart. You make all these lists of all the things that will break and wear out. Brother, with all due respect, you could make these videos about ANY car--with the possible exception of a 1994 Toyota Celica. Because we all know that's God's chariot. I get where you're coming from that these cars are best-suited for DIY'ers or those who can afford to properly maintain them. Granted, the majority of people who buy used BMWs don't fall into either of those categories. How about a little more positivity in your videos? How about a 30 reasons why you should buy a used BMW if you are a DIY'er or can afford to maintain them? Pump a little sunshine our way, Nate! Kay?
Maybe aim at an attitude of. What to be aware of, or , typical issues. I have an 08 530i, done 166 miles..sonyea things are gonna start to.... But if I do the water pump and 2 hoses for $300 I'll get 4 more years from that part. Much mire could be said lol
@@rueben44 every car has its personal style of issues.. Buy a japa.. A Toyota has way less issues than an over engineerineed POS.. EUROS HAVE WAY MORE ISSUES THAN A JAPA
100+ dollars for the whole control arm kit? Lol yeah, mine only lasted for 6-7months from ebay & ended up having to redo the job again with the oem $850 “Lemforder”then how about the mechatronic seals and solenoids...those are a must be cuz you will be getting transmission malfunction error.
I bought my 08' 535xi eight years ago with 68k in perfect mechanical and cosmetic condition and now I have almost 100k and have only had to replace the oil cooler (and do usual oil changes) - It was a one owner trade I purchased from my local BMW dealer - The 30 things that will go wrong appear to me to be just yet another "gloom and doom" video on You Tube.........One of TOO many. I am still very happy with my purchase :) YOUR particular E60 doesn't seem to have been so well cared for, and I think your advice only applies to E60's like yours and doesn't apply to better examples of them, like mine
My 07 E90 530i wagon has 75,000 miles, and NONE of these problems. It replaces my E92 07 335i with 163,000 miles on the clock, which also still runs like a clock.
E60 550 6 spd. Bought new in 07. 175K on the clock. New valve seals, valley of death coolant pipe, Over $14k in repairs over the last 3 yrs. I wouldn't get rid of this car for anything.
You don’t scare me...lol. I still love my 08 528i with 157k. The only issue I have is an annoying vibration at idle no matter what gear I’m in or when coming to a complete stop at a light. The engine mounts are good. Can the exhaust cause this?
I have 185,109 miles! I really wish you didn't say that (about the check engine light) so far I've had a good run. I guess I should be expecting that light soon. Damn 🤯😒.
I recently bought a 146,000 mile e60 and it’s a good runner. Only thing I’ve noticed is steering makes a faint whine / detuned tv sound when warmed up?
Wish I had seen this video before buying my 2006 E60 (525i). I have already repaired half of what you addressed. Lots of common issues. Luckily I can do the work myself, or I would have paid more than the cars value at the dealership within the first 6 months.
U should have seen the first problem when I got my 535xi,the day I got it the serpentine belt got sucked into the cam seal lmao luckily didn't get into the engine bad but still not fun
Lemforder or meyle I would recommend lemforder. If you can do it yourself that is a good thing get them from FCP Euro don't get them from Amazon. The difference is you can send them back to FCP Euro and they'll replace them for free.
Man, you are getting a lot of views Nathan. I read one person say bmw's never have an oil leak-YEAH RIGHT, and another lady said flat out said ' Im depressed'. But there is a guy that said he does all his work and can say what your saying is true. Now my comment. in favor of these problems being consistent (cupholders, lighting, active steering, bent rims, blown gasket, power steering, and one i'm adding, A/C blow out). I bought a 545i at 64k. I was thinking, my last bmw 1993 318i was a champ, im going with this. and 5k miles later, blown gasket(s) yes plural . I had it for 5 years and only put 10k on it. I NEVER drive it. It's sits in the garage so much that you would think it,s a decorative artifact. I have had just about all the issues on this panel. Funny thing is, I was about to buy an Audi R8. However decided, im sticking with the bmw! plus I either do the work myself or go to a group that lives by a mantra " we undercut bmw prices for service 50% or more! and they stand by it, probably cause the owner worked for service bmw and was tired of folks paying sooo much money in repairs. End of the day, and this would be true for all this panel, no matter what car you buy, its built to die, the more you keep an eye on it and keep it serviced determines how many miles you can take it. But in my case, just letting it sit in the garage has problems too. Smh.
some of these things apply to pretty much any car out there. I have done most of these things on my e34 and e39. I.e. if you buy a toyota with a timing belt, then you replace the water pump and thermostat together with the timing belt. Many of these things do not cost a fortune either. I guess that the water pump and thermostat are the most expensive ones on the list here. Some of these points, such as a bad battery or dirty interior are not really BMW specific faults. Thank you for the video though, I feel less worried about getting an e60 after seeing this.
I had a E39 and I thought about getting an E60. They don't have cup holders they'd have cup launchers. My E46 had great cup holders. My BMWs had about a hundred fifty thousand before the cooling system started going. The first sign for mine was radiator leak you should replace the whole thing at once. I had it done by a mechanic I think it was 550 with parts and yes you should replace the expansion tank as well. They call an expansion tank cuz eventually it's going to expand and drop all your fluid but if you do it at the same time as the radiator and water pump you shouldn't have a problem for another hundred fifty thousand miles.
I had an e60, they are absolute crap! I currently have an f30 2013 328i xDrive approaching 120,000 miles and has been trouble free so far I’m very happy :)
1. Flooding of the passenger side floorboard due to the chamber below the ECU flooding when it rains because you can’t get the leaves out until you pull out the plug. --which shorts your yaw sensor. 2. Front struts bent in the sport model likely 3. When you change your autotrans oil, get ready to have a lot of auto trans issues-valves/solenoids 4. AIrbag lights 5. Seatbelt lights 6. LED light bulbs aren’t readable to remove backup light error 7. Oil leak of Oil filter housing 8. Oil leak on Oil pan gasket 9. PCV line 10. Worst engineered design for the anti sway-bar tabs on subframe that are easy to break off if it interferes with low clearance .😡😡😡😡😡😡 11. Active headlights fail 12. Noisy noisy steering wheel tilt My 2004 E60’ engine is tough and most things are working now, but still need to replace the yaw sensor and then reprogram steering, try and clear the airbag, seatbelt, back up light errors. 😡 . .
Agree, my 528i, 2008 has 100,000 milsss now. I take great care of it. No matter what breaks a lot of stuff, even repeat the same. On average one monthy trip to the shop. I will change soon!
after you seal the light and happy its airtight tape some silica gel packets where the bulbs go in and wrap in plastic for a day so the gel absorbs all the condensation inside the lens area. It wont fog as bad again after that.
I own a E60 530d M Sport 77.500 miles on the clock, Brought it from a garage for £5,600.00. Since buying I have had the Swirl Flaps removed & blanked, had to replace Genuine BMW alloys as they were cracked & been welded & the tyres were crap. All sorted & had a re-map so now pushing 280bhp & 640nm. drives like a dream & i love it, M5 rear bumper on order & then a bespoke stainless quad exhaust
You are correct on most of those faults. The E60 is a money pit for sure. I dont know how many fixes I have had to do but I eventually got rid of it as I dont have time these days to be fixing and fixing and fixing. The diesel is a lot better in terms of reliability or just sticking with the non turbocharged cars
My E60 528i LCi Sport Package has been the most reliable car I’ve owned! Bought it a 23k in 2011 now has 244k and I’ve daily driven it since 2011! It all depends on how the previous owners treated them. Mine was a lease vehicle before I bought it.
My brand new E60/N52 5-series had problems within the first few months of ownership. I am a meticulous do-it-yourself guy, and I love doing my own brakes, oil changes, spark plugs - you name it. I have seriously overmaintained my car at it runs beautifully. But I went through hell and back fighting with BMW over the seatbelt airbag/IBS issue, which was eventually recalled after I had spent a ton of money on it. "Dont park your car in your garage!" read the letter. I never received a refund from BMW after contacting them about the recall. One thing after another for years, then the electric water pump died at 75.8K miles, the cheap alternator BMW was using died at 102K, I went through hell and back fighting with them over the seatbelt airbag/IBS issue, which was eventually recalled after I had spent a ton of money on it. BMW never drilled the proper type of holes for A/C condensation to leak out of the bottom of the car, so my right side carpets were soaking and flooded with water for God knows how long. I only found out when a girlfriend took off her shoes in my car and said the carpet was soaking wet and freezing. Defective bouncing rear windows. Water would literally spit out of the A/C vents while I drove at 41K miles. Auxilliary fan shorted out and died while in a coffee shop drive through. Moon roof rattles and wont close properly. Transmission solenoid pack went out at 116K miles: a $5,000 fix. The entire air conditioning system went at 126K, and that was $4,275 to replace. Unless you're going to lease a BMW and give it back to them before it has some miles, get ready to put out some serious cash to fix things that you can not take care of as an amateur mechanic.
They are fun to drive when they are operational. I had a CPO 2010 535xi M Package that was so much fun to drive but it went to the dealership more often than I attend church (which is zero). They’re money pits unless you are willing to work on them yourself (labor costs). It’s fun to tinker if you enjoy being in the shop more than driving it…..
Dear Nathan thank you for your effort I m a BMW e60 and e36 owner ...Beleive it or not I feel safer each time my cars guess broke why? Because Its a chance to replace the old one with new one and drive safer !!!
Lol omg my 2008 528i 248k miles has had battery replaced, expansion tank, valve cover, valve cover gasket, bushings, I do my own oil changes but did take it in for transmission fluid change including mechatronics seals. All costs me more than I paid for the car (call me silly) but I love the car so much and it's in great shape still.
that engine bay deserves a detail, my e60 is about to hit 120k miles. 2007 525i... p.s i never had a check engine lights since 100k miles when i bnought it. hoping for at least 80k miles. did th OFHG and VCG so no more leaks either :) my bushing are fucked tho...brand new oem motor mounts. i have an excel spreadsheet. of my cost in maintenance and repairs.
I have had the C310+ for about 2 years now. It's not a bad little scanner. I have Torque Pro aswell which is good for reading live fuel trims but C310+ can delve deeper into the engine and transmission.
Nathan- great video. never even considered trying to update the software. can you provide info on how and what gadgets you use to do an update. And are the updates from BMW available to the general public or only to mechanics? thanks for any info!
phlynch3 the updates can be done via me I’m the one who does it for Nathan and no bmw will not Do it for you and no there not available to general public please Go to my channel to see
Nathan, thanks so much for this video! It's perfect timing. I'm looking at buying an '05 with 176k this weekend. definitely going to use your list to go over everything. You mentioned updating the car's software. I have an Autel Maxidas. Would you know if that would work by any chance?
First of all Nathan you are awesome. So Dear Mr Nathan i just acquired a BMW 530i from 2007 lci model it's a fantastic car and I do fancy everything about it I watched a lot of your UA-cam movies and I fancy all the heads up you give on this specific brand I just have a question I can't find anything about the EGR valve on the N53 engine I would very much like to go around this one I hate the EGR valves they take emission gas and put it inside a normal breeding engine does not make sense it's just environmental trick but it's very bad for the engine how can I go around this if you can help that will be fantastic if you think I'm yet just stupid viewer that does not understand anything and you think it's waste of time I do understand but I hope you will make a comment on this one thank you very much yours sincerely René Pedersen from Denmark PS Bmws will give you a love hate relationship….
I had the engine mounts bad once i didnt change those right on time and they broke my right side engine support bracket i end having broken bolt in the block not fun of a job. You should replace those ASAP fcpeuro sell good quality ones but good price
What about the E60 with the N62 4.8L engine? I am coming up on 100k really soon. I have changed front upper/lower control arms and stabilizers, water pump, radiator, hoses and expansion tank. Besides the valve stem seals and the coolant pipe what else do I need to look out for? As always thank you for the wonderful videos.
If you still own it, the “alternator bracket” packing. When it goes, you’ll have a significant oil leak…recommend changing every 6years to avoid the roadside mess.
What would be better? To buy a lower mileage E60 for like 5000 $ or to buy a survival E39 in great condition with low mileage for about the same price? Which is more reliable as daily driver? I have a M52, 97, e39 520ia with +220.000 miles and I am quite happy with it. Although I am really thinking on what will my next BMW be. Either an oldtimer E39 , an E60 or E81
Man, I have a 2003 530i with the motorsport package and it's a tank!!! I've changed the alternator, control arms, battery twice, valve cover gasket ,,drained the power steering fluid with the reservoir and hoses , * tires *radiator and upper and lower hoses and the green little o-ring sensor on the lower radiator hose.. *spark plugs every 15k(cause its fun!) *fresh coils at 120k, because it had a tiny misfire. * rubber boot on the intake (cause it was cracked) I change the oil every 4k religiously though. I have a shelf full of Mann filters and 5w-30 jugs ready to go So that's pretty much it ,this car has been fun! I did all of this stuff myself I am now looking into finally changing the transmission fluid for a second time , the car has about 145k....love this E 39!! I would love to do a PVC valve delete but I live in Cali and I don't know if its legal.
Nice. No man don't do PVC delete bcs you won't pass CA roadworthiness test. Or do it and just put it back on your inspection day and take it back off after if you are willing to play with it lol.Yeah I service mine the same way as you do ,pretty much ,but I had to overhaul the cooling system plus the front suspension rods/ balls kit and Crank /Cam sensors.... I am thinking to change the trans fluid too it was changed only once before. I have a service pit and tools at home so I can luckily do pretty much everything myselves otherwise I could never afford all that work.My next one will most likely be 2003 year with lower mileage. And yes those cars really are a blast to drive. And they look really good when parked in a lot alongside all new small econoboxes .Although I don't race mine I drive it like a gentleman lol.
@@knkjkjn ..oh shoot!! Cam sensors, I haven't done those two, thanks for the tip. Also yes, I drive mine with love and affection. Haha. I find it if I baby it too much something goes wrong. I think its because I don't drive it much!! Thanks for your reply!!
NP man and If you will need any tips just ask and i'll try to help. I learned quite a lot on those cars over the last few years by trial and error and thanks to Nathan's channel too ,which is an absolutely Golden source of info. Oh yes and you have to drive those cars regularly they are not meant sit. They get really annoyed if you sunday-drive them I noticed lol
Good info, all cars has its problems. My X5 was leaking from the aux. fan sensor ordered new sensor and hose to be on the safe side, due to mileage ended up being the lower radiator hose the fitting for the sensor was enlarged for some reason, ( to many heat cycles ?) maybe. Good vid.
E60 250k miles here. I can confirm everything he said. Plus more. Much, much more. Still a great car though. Luckily, I do all my own repairs, otherwise my car would have been parted out long ago due to high shop labor costs.
lol i feel ya brother, i have 2009 BMW 650i with only 56,000 miles on it. "God Bless THE DIY Guy"

This car will break you. This will probably be my last BMW.
I have a 2008 f150 with
270,000 miles. No issues. No leaks. Original starter, alternator, waterpump etc. Hasn't given me any problems !! Just your basic maintenance. Oil changes, tires, brakes etc.
The e60 platform plus that N54 is a disaster. But this car sounds like it may have been neglected. Did you PPI?
I have an E60...2004 model...bought it 2009. Now 190k km. Total repair costs in 10 years maybe 1000 USD without the costs for regular stuff like breaks, filters and fluids. I had non of these issues in 10 years driving...
Man, I lucked out. I just bought an '07 with 100k and it was immaculate and still solid.
What's the engine spec? M52/M54? I'm planning to buy one...2007 model reg.@Japan
With the exception of lower control arms and the water pump, I have never had any of these issues you are talking about on my 2007 530xi with 120K miles
I got the same one but it has 180.000 km and the battery is the only thing I had to change👊
Ditto that 2006 530xi with 130000 KM only the lower control arms. It seems to be a US thing.
Do you have the n53 engine.. that is really troublesome

Now I'm depressed...
No dear, just get the tool box out and get down and dirty😂😊
Fix the oil pan gasket, new vanos solenoids, oil change and filter, oil filter housing leak, new valve cover and gasket and eccentric shaft sensor, change to the Bosch four prong spark plugs and you’ll be good for 100k miles again. You may get an ignition coil that fails but just put a little extra back for the car every month and you’ll be ok for a long long time. At least another ten years.
my e60 2009 have done 153000 miles and running fine with factory stuff ..water pump thermostat, radiator etc.
Same here 2010 with 180k km.. All original and rocking (knock on wood)
If you take care of the car is gonna be fine
@@JuukaJZ exactly
MENDEZ_RAMIREZ in your opinion, why would a dealership sale a vehicle $3k-$5k less than the actual kbb value while the car is under 100k miles.....NO ACCIDENTS.....ONE OWNER......& has the CARFAX ?
2006 e60 running fine just replaced waterpump and thermostat bought it brand new and now it has 119k miles on it
I hope you didn't forget the wheels and low profile tires.
Time to go into the classic BMW restoration business!
I do have 520i e61 in France for 1 and a half year and i never face any of those fault. I think U.S BMW's has quality issue.
yes, they economize US bmw models, to cut cost for exporting . European BMW`S are much much better quality

What oil do you use?
Mobile 1 ESP 5w-30
Stuart im about to try liqui moly.. this time!
At 301000km always used castrol oil 5w 30
I thought the n52 was one of the most reliable bmw engines... am i wrong?
Its one of the best engines ever made by bmw . U r correct.
Why the resistor? I coded mine out.
You gotta be willing to spend a grand or two but its worth it.
i only paid 2g for my 2010 e60. i dont want to put another 2g's into it!
I have an E90 with 70000 miles on it and I have experienced most of these problems. So you have to give it to BMW for consistency I guess?
‘07 530i with 73k miles. Lowered on Eibach springs, staggered 20 inch Vossen CVT’s, etc...minimal problems so far. Fingers crossed!
My 06 E60 525i never gave me any trouble mechanically, with the exception of the AC compressor pully shearing off..
Damn I wish I didn't read your comment lol
Edit: 'UpDate' At the time of writing this I had 180,000 miles, I wrote 81,000 with was a typo. Now I'm at 183,893 mile. Back and forth from Long island to Central NJ. So far so good as of August 5, 2019.
Side note I have the n52 engine if that makes a difference. I hope it does lmao
I bet yout e39 is still working somewhere in East Europe.
Gregg anymore updates on your car? I’m thinking of buying one as well but all these people saying it’s unreliable is getting to me 🤦🏾♂️
My brother owns a e39.
@@davidscott4045 I have a 2006 bmw 530i 180k+ miles and runs fantastic and is fast as hell
The are problematic cars just face. No there are many cars you won't get this list for. You can still love BMW just be honest.
@@rueben44 every car has its personal style of issues..
Buy a japa..
A Toyota has way less issues than an over engineerineed POS..
EUROS HAVE WAY MORE ISSUES THAN A JAPA
Completely agree.
my 2008 bmw 528xi is at 194000 . still runs like a champ! keep up with maintenance and you good.
Having just bought a used e60 this was very helpful and allows me to go through an orderly checklist
STILL HAVE IT?
My 07 E90 530i wagon has 75,000 miles, and NONE of these problems.
It replaces my E92 07 335i with 163,000 miles on the clock, which also still runs like a clock.
E60 550 6 spd. Bought new in 07. 175K on the clock. New valve seals, valley of death coolant pipe, Over $14k in repairs over the last 3 yrs. I wouldn't get rid of this car for anything.
You sir give me hope for my 535xi 6spd
You don’t scare me...lol. I still love my 08 528i with 157k. The only issue I have is an annoying vibration at idle no matter what gear I’m in or when coming to a complete stop at a light. The engine mounts are good. Can the exhaust cause this?
What type of Transmission fluid.. would you recommend... I have a 06 e60 550i.. and I'm about to do a transmission fluid replace...
Thank you.
Not low on power steering fluid either
Wish I had seen this video before buying my 2006 E60 (525i). I have already repaired half of what you addressed. Lots of common issues. Luckily I can do the work myself, or I would have paid more than the cars value at the dealership within the first 6 months.
U should have seen the first problem when I got my 535xi,the day I got it the serpentine belt got sucked into the cam seal lmao luckily didn't get into the engine bad but still not fun
Do you have a recommendation/link for control arms brand? E39 540i front. I couldn’t figure out how to search your amazon store
Lemforder or meyle I would recommend lemforder. If you can do it yourself that is a good thing get them from FCP Euro don't get them from Amazon. The difference is you can send them back to FCP Euro and they'll replace them for free.
Soo should i buy bmw e60 530d with 200.000 ( 300.000 km ) miles or nah? I dont have tons of money to fix it constantly...
200k and yes your preaching. Amen. The water pump was the first thing, and now I'm going through you list.
2. Front struts bent in the sport model likely
3. When you change your autotrans oil, get ready to have a lot of auto trans issues-valves/solenoids
4. AIrbag lights
5. Seatbelt lights
6. LED light bulbs aren’t readable to remove backup light error
7. Oil leak of Oil filter housing
8. Oil leak on Oil pan gasket
9. PCV line
10. Worst engineered design for the anti sway-bar tabs on subframe that are easy to break off if it interferes with low clearance .😡😡😡😡😡😡
11. Active headlights fail
12. Noisy noisy steering wheel tilt
My 2004 E60’ engine is tough and most things are working now, but still need to replace the yaw sensor and then reprogram steering, try and clear the airbag, seatbelt, back up light errors. 😡

Cheers bro.
Thinking about buy an 08 530i.
This is a good shopping list
Nathan, got a question. 07 335i, during heavy exceleration, feels like rear end slip, or engine cut out. What say you?
Can attest, went from a nightmare e60 to an F30.
My E60 528i LCi Sport Package has been the most reliable car I’ve owned! Bought it a 23k in 2011 now has 244k and I’ve daily driven it since 2011! It all depends on how the previous owners treated them. Mine was a lease vehicle before I bought it.
Hence the reasons for so many BMW'S for sale just under or over 100k miles
They got me at 97, I didn't know.
😢 so bad 😮
They are fun to drive when they are operational. I had a CPO 2010 535xi M Package that was so much fun to drive but it went to the dealership more often than I attend church (which is zero). They’re money pits unless you are willing to work on them yourself (labor costs). It’s fun to tinker if you enjoy being in the shop more than driving it…..
Dear Nathan thank you for your effort I m a BMW e60 and e36 owner ...Beleive it or not I feel safer each time my cars guess broke why? Because Its a chance to replace the old one with new one and drive safer !!!
I just replaced my control arms, cv axle now I'm doing the power steering, but it's very clean I just bought it in November over all I love the car
Are the LCI E60's better or are they all the same ?
A BMW leaking oil nah never lol. Stock up on brake clean before you open the hood!
Can you post the complete list? Part numbers too?
Lol omg my 2008 528i 248k miles has had battery replaced, expansion tank, valve cover, valve cover gasket, bushings, I do my own oil changes but did take it in for transmission fluid change including mechatronics seals. All costs me more than I paid for the car (call me silly) but I love the car so much and it's in great shape still.
I agree with your list my e60 530xi needs alot of love constantly
that engine bay deserves a detail, my e60 is about to hit 120k miles.
And are the updates from BMW available to the general public or only to mechanics? thanks for any info!
phlynch3 the updates can be done via me I’m the one who does it for Nathan and no bmw will not
Do it for you and no there not available to general public please
Go to my channel to see
I’d like more info on which scanner to buy for updates my 550i.
Nathan, thanks so much for this video! It's perfect timing. I'm looking at buying an '05 with 176k this weekend. definitely going to use your list to go over everything. You mentioned updating the car's software. I have an Autel Maxidas. Would you know if that would work by any chance?
i suggest dont but pre LCI model 2008 before
First of all Nathan you are awesome. So Dear Mr Nathan i just acquired a BMW 530i from 2007 lci model it's a fantastic car and I do fancy everything about it I watched a lot of your UA-cam movies and I fancy all the heads up you give on this specific brand I just have a question I can't find anything about the EGR valve on the N53 engine I would very much like to go around this one I hate the EGR valves they take emission gas and put it inside a normal breeding engine does not make sense it's just environmental trick but it's very bad for the engine how can I go around this if you can help that will be fantastic if you think I'm yet just stupid viewer that does not understand anything and you think it's waste of time I do understand but I hope you will make a comment on this one thank you very much yours sincerely René Pedersen from Denmark
PS Bmws will give you a love hate relationship….
When he said if you buy a used Bmw with 100k plus and has no check engine light on and it’s going to come on just wait 😂 so true
@@mightysprocket fcp euro link? I just bought one of these
Fantastic Thorough Video !! Thanks :)
Where do you get your engines from?
Keep it up to make more video about e60. I have a 2009 bmw E60 with 180,000km.
Hope u can share more about everything about bmw E60. Thank Nathan!
I've changed the alternator, control arms, battery twice, valve cover gasket ,,drained the power steering fluid with the reservoir and hoses ,
* tires
*radiator and upper and lower hoses and the green little o-ring sensor on the lower radiator hose..
*spark plugs every 15k(cause its fun!)
*fresh coils at 120k, because it had a tiny misfire.
* rubber boot on the intake (cause it was cracked)
I change the oil every 4k religiously though. I have a shelf full of Mann filters and 5w-30 jugs ready to go
So that's pretty much it ,this car has been fun!
Where did you find the control arm kit for $130? That’s a fantastic price! Same question for the front half shaft.
Good vid.
It's sad only 20 years ago BMW was a great car a very reliable car , now they cost $100 grand yet Kia is more reliable. Wtf?
Cause you cant cheap out on maintaince for these
