Every so often, I move furniture and art work, pictures in my room or house! Doesn't cost a penny. Gives me a new environment! My grandmother used to do this. I didn't understand. Now I do! So much fun!...If you can afford a few new cheery pillows; even better! Will lift your spirits!
I heard a quote recently about changing one’s perspective. Instead of thinking “it’s a shame that roses have thorns”, think “isn’t it great that thorns have roses”.
I also like to take a walk when I am feeling down. It just feels so good to see other people out and about and that makes me aware that I am part of the outside world. I also love watching sixty and me. Listening to Margaret is like having a heart warming chat with a good friend.
Thank you Margaret and pat for sharing. I do feel sorry for myself on occasion and then I hear someone else who is dealing with so much worse and it helps me put things back in perspective. I love to cuddle with my dog. Nothing like unconditional love to cheer you up.
Wonderful video and tips. I saw a quote today that was very impactful. “The reason for your wound was probably not your fault. But the healing of it your responsibility.” WOW! That is so true. We often feel the need to look for others to fix it but it is really up to us. No matter if its a hurt or a challenge. We have to look within ourselves to find those answers and fixes. WE truly are the creator of our future. Love the Quote “We see things as we choose to see.” Thats why its important to keep a positive thought/life and stray away from the negative. As best we can. Our situations CAN change. It may take effort and sometimes creativity but it is our hands to change it. I hope everyone is having a Blessed day!
I just happened upon your videos. I am 53 yrs...my youngest child of my brood of 7 children is 14 yrs. Im a grandmother to 7 all within 7 miles drive. Im enjoying listening to your advice about growing into our golden yrs. I hope to age gracefully and want to learn from ladies just a few yrs ahead of me. I enjoy your positive outlook. Your gentle approach to life.
In my late 60’s and decades of “challenges” of many varieties, the one thing that I always find unhelpful is when people make comparisons and judgments about someone else’s condition or situation. For example, Saying “ yes you lost a leg but at least you have another.” Or “ What you are going through isn’t nearly as bad as what Z is going through. You should be grateful.” You get the idea... People in pain find strength in understanding and validation. Not in being told to stop hurting because someone else may be hurting more. This borders on cruelty and often comes from well meaning but somewhat clueless, insensitive souls. It is not helpful nor encouraging. On the other hand, hearing, “ How can I help you cope?” Or “ Please tell me what you are experiencing so I can understand.” are examples of supportive words. These release the person to acknowledge and face his suffering. There are, of course, those who prefer a different approach, but rarely does anyone appreciate being compared to someone else. It can cause deeper feelings of separation and isolation.. and grief. Which is too often mistaken for self pity.
I try to never turn down an invitation to do something. I may not feel exactly up to it, but once I’m out and about I usually feel better that I went and rarely regret going.
Your approach to todays' topic was wonderful, thank you. One thing I have found is that women especially just sometimes need someone to listen, it helps the person work through their own problem by sharing it. Love your blog.
I luv this community. Thank You Margaret for all u do. Just wanted to add that most local libraries offer audible books and there is no charge ... only just a library card. The books are downloaded online and with mine you have the book for 21 days ... and then it magically disappears back into cyberspace. No matter what you are doing, you can be listening to a book being read to you. It's beyond fabulous !!!
I have been telling everyone I know about Sixty and Me. I just recently had this program recommended to me by You Tube. I drink a cup of coffee with a metabolism boost added while I watch it. Right now one of my favorite teas is Rishi Turmeric and Ginger. It has some other spices added and can be brewed twice in my fabulous Teavana Perfect Tea brewer. I not only enjoy watching your lovely smiling face, I enjoy looking at the colors in the painting behind you...gorgeous and uplifting.
I like to take walks when I am down. I make sure to smile and say hello to everyone I pass by. Keeps me engaged and also the endorphins from the exercise sure help to alleviate sadness or depression. ~Elizabeth
Very good suggestions for staving off the doldrums! The beautiful color pallet behind you is uplifting, and also your gracious attitude & spirit. Thank you for these wonderful morning chats!
Love your presentation. So key to the whole subject. My big motivation is gratitude. Everything seems to spring from that. It seems to activate a wave of positive emotions. Thank you for the heads up advise. Henrietta
I am a real homebody! I have to make myself get out and interact with others. This makes me feel better. The changes in my body brought on by aging bother me. I used to have good skin. Now it seems something new peeks out every time I look in the mirror!
Favorite tea Lipton Green Tea with White Mangosteen Peach/ 2nd fav is Celestial Seasonings Sleepy Time Tea/ 3rd fav is Choice Oohlong Tea. But I love my one big mug of dark coffee in the morning. After that drinking tea seems more cleansing to the palette. Thanks for your videos!
I am struggling at the moment, I've lived with depression for over 20 yrs, My only child has alienated me, I'm divorced, so no family, no female friends, no sisters to talk to, I try and stay active, joined meetup here in the Uk, go to creative writing clubs. I do have a couple of guys I talk to from the writing group, though nothing romantic, one is young enough to be my son. I've tried online dating, but that makes me even more depressed, because of the morons I've met. P,s My daughter is no teenager, she will be 40 this year, and access to my g/children is limited, I'm never invited down at christmas, and no-one bothers on my birthday.
Ann Harrison, I will wish you a Happy Birthday whenever that is. I can relate to your message. At this time I think knowing myself better, finding satisfaction and purpose in each days events and interactions rather than in focusing on future happiness, and more acceptance of life as it is helps me with depression. The actions that come from this are self care activities of what is mine-body, mind, soul, belongings which are central to my purpose. I try to generate most all of my identity and purpose from my own mindset of my own value and not the actions or reactions or evaluations of others. It takes a lot of focus if it doesn’t come naturally to think this way. It’s kind of like hiking a trail. Sometimes people hike along side us and strike a conversation. Sometimes they forge ahead. Sometimes they meet us head on going another way. Sometimes they take the fork in the trail. Sometimes they stop for one reason or another or we stop and others offer help. Then they may leave. I often look at married people or popular people and think that it’s not that way. But having a partner or spouse is no guarantee since many things leave one alone again, even death. I find reading about and engaging in spiritual thoughts provided perspective and supports valuing oneself, caring for oneself and ones stuff and accepting even hard things we can’t change and enjoying today is my best strategy for life. Maybe you will find something helpful in this. This was my intention. 🌺
I live with depression so sometimes life can be difficult for me. It will be my 68th Birthday next month (August). Despite making efforts to arrange something for that day everything has fell through, so I will be spending (yet another) birthday on my own. If I am lucky I will have about 30 mins, with my daughter/g/children, after years of parental alienation, I'm divorced and have been for 20 yrs. I've been told that I am lacking in self - confidence, ( try getting up in front of an audience in a theatre of a couple of hundred people to perform a play.) But if I am, why kick a dog while it's down?
Ann Harrison I’ve had to spend Christmas alone and it’s hard. On your birthday do a few things that you enjoy: your fav restaurant for lunch, pedicure/ manicure, a movie YOU enjoy, small picnic in a park, bookstore, home goods store, coffee shop, fabric shop, etc. Just simple things that don’t take much time or money. You’ll be surprised how pleasant it can be by yourself. You only have to please you!!
I love the kick in the Bloomers, yes, that's for sure. I don't know where these comments go and are they seen outside this group? And I am responding to an old er video, do you still see them? Oh my, I am a mess, but a lovely and nice mess. Are there local 60 and me groups? Thank you.
