I like how you always give “real” advice. “If you can only just afford it, you can’t afford it”. That’s sound advice and always keeping 20-30% back for repairs is a must on older, luxury cars.

20-30% for German. My 2012 XKR (as spec'd £100k new) aside from servicing, has cost me £800 in 3 years. And it's worth a little bit more than I paid for it. 👍

Great video. They have all been on my ‘want’ list. Having watched your previous video on the Maserati Quattroporte a few times I bought one 3 months ago. I’ve done 10000 miles in it since! Yes it’s going to cost more than a 5 series or E class to run but it’s been a lot of fun for the money. A champagne car for (relatively speaking) lemonade money 🤔👍 You only live once and who knows what lies ahead in life for any of us so my recommendation is to go ahead and take the plunge. X351 Jaguar - I have owned a 3.0 Diesel for 5 years and 80k miles. Love the thing. In my ownership, the costs (over the whole 5 years) - Suspension ride height sensor (£250 at local Jag specialist). Cam belt (£350 at local Jag specialist) New front right rim (they buckle easily: £200 off ebay), windscreen (there is slight chassis flex, causing screens to crack (£90 on insurance) and then just servicing! I do the servicing myself - takes less than an hour to do the air filter, oil filter and fuel filters plus oil change. I do it every 5-10k miles. I also have a broken lock on the passenger door, the part was £50 only and I will tackle this myself when I can find the time. They are classy, rare, and make you feel special. if you are replacing the brake discs (or rotors if you are American), get drilled ones. They are prone to overheating and then warping... drilled discs help a little. 👌

Thanks Matt. I’ve had the GTC and the L322. Both epic cars and your advice on the rainy day fund is spot on but for the GatC you need at least £5k a year to cover maintenance costs. Mine failed the MOT as a headlamp bulb was not secure in the socket. To get at the light the door, wing and bumper had to come off. It’s over engineered and the parts are extortionate. Another example the bonnet has 3 sensors that tell you if it’s shut, you can’t buy them separately, a new panel is required. 2 motors on the handbrake. It’s a money pit.

I agree with you Matt on both counts, all the vehicles you mention are desirable and have the connotation of status and style. You have to be realistic too when you see your reserve depleting, do you stick it out or fold and sell. First of all most Autobahn sections are crowded or limited, regular 4 cylinder engines are not strong enough and even the 500hp monsters arent fast enough to pull away completely. Even when there is a Lambo or Porsche, they barely pull away, and latest after 10 mins I overtake them, because they cant drive constantly 200-250kmh because its exhausting in those kind of cars and the fuel tank is empty quite quickly...

I'm in New Zealand and I budget about $4,000 (about £2000) per year for maintenance across my 2001 Corvette and my 2007 Jaguar S-Type. I'm by no means wealthy - and I only drive these cars because I love them - but by carefully budgeting $400 aside each month and keeping those funds separate, I avoid the panic attacks I used to experience when handed invoices with too many zeroes in the total! 😅 If I have a year that's a bit of a lesser spend, I leave the funds in the account for the inevitable catch-up year. 😮 Gotta love old cars!

Been there, ran a Jaguar XKR, can afford it, don’t run these cars on a budget, it doesn’t work, - absolutely lovely car, not stupid price to buy, somebody got hit with huge depreciation but it wasn’t me - had the Range Rover Sport 5ltr engine, fully knew and accepted that the VED would be horrible and that fuel costs would be high - for the first 5 years, few problems, normal and expected expenses, had a few issues, plus tyres and battery etc, kept a sensible fund back and everything ticked along nicely - After 5 years everything started to go wrong at the same time, the alternator went, air con failed, coolant leak, battery problems, plus the normal expenses, VED ‘went up - The bills got awful, I could have sorted it, everything was very fixable but reached a point where I’d had enough and traded it for - a Honda CRV. Great to own these types of car, had my fun and maybe looked rich for a while but they have the potential to make you weep. now I look poor again 😢 - Plus the chances of getting knicked for speeding, every trip out became a challenge around our area.

I have owned a 2007 series 1 Bentley Continental since 2013 and it has been a great car. The running costs (maintenance) have been massive - engine has been out twice) but it now has 199,000 miles on the clock and is still going like the wind. Have NEVER been bested on acceleration or top speed - even by a motorcycle. When in "sport mode" the performance is pretty damn good. Is also super comfortable and so quiet the loudest thing is the A/C.

This is really valuable Matt - thanks again! Also a question I have often asked myself, particularly regarding the prices of Maserati. Good that you reminded us about the slush fund... I was in the market for a Quattroporte but kind of chickened out... because I was concerned about running costs. Live in Sweden now... I wouldn't want to use it in the winter... because of the ludicrous amonts of salt on the roads... and it is more difficult to source parts and professional service. However... it is a drop-dead sexy car... no getting away from that.

Best to heed the advice about keeping money back for a rainy day. I have kept a little car fund for servicing and maintenance for around 30 years, especially as I have driven used Mercs for 23 of those years. Costs have been relatively okay, but I still top the fund up each month with a few pounds just in case a huge bill comes my way.

I've recently bought a Jaguar X-Type Sovereign estate which is a car I've always been interested in. Didn't spend anything like the suggested amounts on this video but the car has been very well-looked after, detailed history and drives fine. Owner forced to part-ex the car because their address is in the ULEZ zone. My garage lets me supply my own parts so I always buy the best quality for them to fit. I like the fact that there is a Ford 2.2 diesel engine under the bonnet so no timing belt and the automatic transmission is 6-speed and the same as in the Tiguan (which I was glad to be rid of) and the Volvo Geartronics. I agree that you need a bit of savings for any car.

There is a significant reason why most people struggle to become truly wealthy. They attempt to display a lavish lifestyle, such as owning expensive cars, before actually attaining substantial wealth. If you can control your impulses and invest in income-generating assets, you have the potential to achieve genuine wealth. Otherwise, you may end up bankrupt.

If you were doing a follow up on the top 6-10, would you add a BMW 7-series and an Audi A7 (or A8) to the list? If so, where in that list would each of them come, and what else would round out your top 10? Maybe a Cadillac Escalade would sneak in? (Some feat for a vehicle that can't really sneak in anywhere!)
Doing a quick AutoTrader search of cars up to 2015 priced between £15-25k turns up Porsche 911s (996 and 997, unsurprisingly), BMW 6-series, Mercedes-Benz SLs and SLKs, a couple of Aston Martin DB9s (amongst a bunch of DB7s), and many more besides. There are some interesting options beyond the standard luxobarges!

I’ve got a 11year old XF 2.2 diesel with beige leather interior and yes everyone that I work with or give a lift to thinks it’s amazing and generally gives a sarcastic “you must be loaded” comment! I always say it’s eleven years old and I just get a blank expression back 😂
On watching this channel I got the gear box & engine serviced as it’s got 65k miles which cost 1k & next month I’ll get the cam belt done at £600 then hopefully that’s the big spend done but will keep some money to one side just in case. Lastly and a big reason for this comment is I’m driving a car that really does feel like luxury while getting 40+ miles to the gallon!

In my mid 20s I fell in love with a Mercedes 190e 2.0l. It was 10k and
more than my annual salary. I noticed the difference in how other road users
treated me immediately. It wasn't to show how much money I had it was purely
because it was the most gorgeous thing I had ever seen and I had to have it.
Well three years later having spent heaps on the gearbox, the sunroof, tires and
lots of breaks it was time to let it go. It was after all a money pit. I went
back to the garage and was informed that the new owner had complained that it
smelled funny when he drove it. Apparently he had been driving it for over a
    week with the handbrake on.
Many people buy expensive cars but do not want to spend money on the upkeep. This is the biggest problem with luxury second hand cars. If you didn't own it from new then you can't really tell how it was treated.

Just made a massive mistake Matt. I just bought my fifth big body RR and this one is a 2023 Autobiography. Have always loved my previous RR’s but totally overcharged (my fault) for this ‘23. Dealership used the “these are so rare and so few getting imported we are charging a “adjusted market price” which of course means tacking on thousands to the price. So frustrated getting screwed on the price will probably never buy a RR again. Must admit I love the LR3 and LR4. I believe over there they are calledDiscovery 3 and 4. Such unique and cool SUV’s but of course LR quit making those.
