Greetings John, I've been having trouble of my setup but if you can help me what's the best setup I'll highly appreciated the recommendation. Anyways, I have DSL internet (10mps). They gave me A Techicolor TG788v v3 modem but I've been having some serious issues when I play online (using WiFi) I'm talking about 220 ping on BO4. Any solutions??
There's a bit of misinformation here unfortunately and quite a bit to address, but the major points being: QoS *only* makes a difference if you're running into some form of contention and want to prioritize traffic. It's also not recommended on most consumer grade equipment and usually does more harm than good. QoS will *NOT* make traffic any less latent under normal conditions. I would advise heavily against its use for most consumers. The double NAT thing isn't a problem in the scenario you provided. Double NAT is an issue when both DHCP servers are on the same network. In the diagram, the ISP provided equipment is only leasing a single address to the consumer router. It's better to put the ISP device into bridge mode, but stating that this scenario will cause problems isn't true unless you're attempting to port forward. The "gateway" is really a 3-in-1, Router/Switch/AP. Usually poor versions of each. The idea of having a "high performance" access point with a "low performance" access point is nonsense. I would never in a million years spend that much money on lackluster Netgear equipment. If you're serious about your network but don't want to spend a fortune look into something like Ubiquiti.
Correction on double NAT, I don't know why I was conflating it with DHCP in my head, lack of sleep and all that. It's still not a problem unless you're port forwarding.
I'm kinda new to his videos, mainly because of doing research for tech he happens to have videos for. And one reoccurring theme I notice already is a consistent form of Misinformation. Even the title here where it claims to teach how to turn an ISP router in to a Gaming router, is nothing more than a video about how to buy another piece of hardware to get the functionality out of the original hardware one tried to use in the first place. I tell myself at least he is only effecting PS4 users, I mean they are on PSN so who the hell cares what their connection and online gaming experience is like. 😅
I know this is a 4 year old video now but it has just solved a crazy double nat and lack of qos functionality issue ive been having in my home network. My new isp gateway suffers from terrible buffer bloat and has no modem only or bridge mode. Plus it uses carrier grade nat. I have an asus router running openwrt firmware and have had a nightmare trying to bridge them without either double nat or a los of qos. Now have a managed switch running pfsense qos and prioritizing traffic and have reverted the asus back to og firmware and running in ap mode and it seems to ve working well! Both my wife and i thank you john!
This is great! I told my ISP that I had my own modem and router. They tried to tell me that I couldn’t do that which is definitely not true in most cases.
I realize I’m 4 years late, but this is the most informative and straightforward video I have found on the subject. Trying to connect a new MSI gaming router to ISP gateway and really wish I had watched this last week!
Except Ipv6 will not work correctly and you will be creating a bottleneck on your network. Those things wont affect most people but for me it's not acceptable
John Glasscock John Glasscock could you elaborate on this some more. This is how i am setup, Nighthawk R7000 along w/Spectrum internet. I have them bridging it to my Nighthawk. Sometimes things get haywire and I have to have them configure things when internet goes down, electrical issues, or power outage.
I just want to mention real quick on the part with the gateway to proper 3rd party router, if you cannot get your provider to provide you with a modem, most gateways do have a feature called "bridge mode" this feature will essentially turn your gateway into a modem and then you have no problems when connecting your 3rd party router to it.
This doesnt work for every provider unfortunately. Also, testing with bridge mode I've found a huge cut in speed/ throughput when using "bridge mode" on a high speed connection. Also, I encountered errors with IPv6 compatibility. There are people who have very good results using bridge mode but for me it was inconsistent and I wouldn't recommend it
John Glasscock the reason to use bridged mode is that you are then free to use whatever routing gear you want. It’s not going to work well if you just put the bridged connection straight into your managed switch. You should try Pfsense if you haven’t already.
@@backjonas I'm not saying to put a bridged connection into a managed switch ( which would actually work the same) I'm saying you can avoid bridge mode all together utilizing a different hardware set up. I'm familiar with "bridge mode" but have discovered through traffic monitoring that using at&t gateway doesnt provide a true bridge. It sort of simulates a bridge but has shortcomings
John Glasscock I am should get 1000 mbts but I only get about 250. My ISP is att fiber and my modem is on bridge mode. I have no problems other than this speed which is much more than enough for all devices I have home. Everything goes really nice
What I should do? I had Frontier Fios (Verizon fios) in Florida. But Im doing the Big NO you are saying on this video. I connect my nighthawk XR500 to my gateway(modem from my internet provider). What cheaper option I have?
Hey, John, I have a question for you. I just got 1GB fiber put into my apartment from AT&T. Now I am only getting 300 DL and 300 UL. I talked to the Tech and he said I could get more if I just add a router to my gateway. My question to you is it worth me buying a gaming router? Will I get more speed if I do that? It comes into my apartment as fiber then come out in a CAT 5 connection. he said also that as soon as I attach it that is disables the DCHP and give all handling to the new router? Thanks for the videos and I hope you can answer this for me.
Question that I might not get a answer too, If I have the worst internet going I’m talking I get a solid 6 on a good day. What is the best thing I can buy
Bro I’m getting AT&T tomorrow I’m getting a Gigabit up and down. So the only thing I need is a “SWITCH.” Also, do they have a gigabit “switch” because I want the best of the best.
Can i disable the bridge option in my arris so its only a moden and run a gaming router? Would that be the same thing as running a switch into a router?
I have a cable modem and connected it to a router to make it useful for more than one device. My modem is an Arris from the ISP. The connection as sold to me is 100 megabit but I often get more. That is only because I got rid of the old router which had no gigabit Ethernet and got one that does have it. I was not expecting gigabit speeds and was not really sure if I would see more than 100 megabit. To my pleasant surprise the better router allowed an extra 70 megabits to come through. Not all people will have the luck I had. I am using a TP-Link C7 router and they are usually good. Some people who reviewed them said they had problems with them but it is very difficult to know what they did to theirs, I had no problems at all!! I already had that extra boost in speed before the epidemic so that wasn't just my ISP being generous and making quarantining easier for me and other people. In a way I am glad for that extra bit of speed because they (like all the others) slowly raise your bill higher. It seems to me that the slowly rising price is more for TV service really.
I've been trying to find a solution for so long. I've opened port forwarded, amongst so many other options but this solutions helps the best and is explained the nicest.
A guy from geeksquad tried to tell me that I needed a router for my games because most of their modems didn't have phone Ethernet and cable altogether.
So my isp is AT&T, not fiber optic as it isn’t in the area yet. I have their Pace 5268AC router. I also have a Linksys Velop Mesh WiFi system with 3 nodes. What are the best setting and best setup to achieve quality gaming without lag spikes and very high ping in the 100’s? You may not be familiar with the Velop mesh system but I’m going out on a limb here to try and find good help from someone who can point me in the right direction. My Xbox is across the home in a game room (wife won’t allow it anywhere else) and my router is next to the computer on the other side of the house this is why the mesh system was purchased. I now have a double nat all the time and a strict nat at all times. Before the mesh system I had no double nat and a moderate nat type but the router was so far away that I would lose connection 80% of the time and get kicked out of games.
I don't understand the difference between the managed switch and a DHCP enabled gaming router.. Couldn't you just disable DHCP on the router and use the built in qos and wifi capabilities without it confusing the IP assignments from the cable/dsl gateway?
John Glasscock I have att fiber 1 GB speed and I’m stuck with their 5268AC modem/router. The WiFi speed sucks, so I bought a better gaming router (Zyxel Armor Z2) and I’m able to get 400-500 mbps w/ 4-5ms ping on WiFi (with 2.4 ghz disabled and using channel 157 on 5 ghz after using WiFi analyzer to see which channels are best for me) anyways, on Ethernet connection, I’m able to get 800-900mbps w/ 2-3ms ping also after connecting to google’s DNS and doing some other stuff on Windows like changing the bandwidth limitation from 80% to 0%, etc. So my question is, you mentioned that having two routers with DCHP/NAT both enabled causes problems. What kind of problems? And how do I disable DCHP on my gaming router?
@@Dmarcuz there are some routers that have disabling DHCP automatically and others will let you disable DHCP by entering the IP address and subnetmask for your internet source modem or in you case, your other router. I use zyxel router and i find the settings in maintenance > LAN settings

Hi bro, i hv xr500 and my gateway fiber model , so i put the xr500 Mac address into the dmz of the fiber gateway and my ps4 is connected into the xr500 and i put my ps4 ip in dmz on the xr500, open nat now and games is fine , is my setup fine ? The wireless devices is connected to the xr500 and the wifi is not enable in the gateway
I have a Asus GT-AX11000 and a Netgear Nighthawk CM1200, i pay 1000Mbps but only getting Wifi 275 down and 41.1 up, Hardwire 575 down and 41.5 up, is there any functionality i need to change on the gaming router?
How about bridge mode it turns a gateway into a modem basically and you can also shut of firewall at least for me with Comcast which I have done and then use everything from my XR500 router.
so what is if i use a gaming router like asus rog ac5300 with my gateway from isp ,, and disable dhcp in one of the devices ( the gateway or the router ) ?
Also, ensure there is no crosstalk noise from neighborhood routers broadcasting near the same frequency. 2.4GHz band has 11 channels; however, only 4 channels can be broadcast in close proximity due to overlapping boundaries. 5GHz doesn't suffer too much in overlap but it does have line-of-sight limits as well as interference from microwaves and incoming cell calls to nearby mobile devices.
how do you know that they are forcing you to use their gateway???? I've got a gateway do you recommend me to buy any tp-link router that supports QoS and fiber cable?
Noobie question here. My cable modem has 2 ethernet ports (A and B) at the back. Is it perfectly fine for my desktop pc to directly connect to ethernet port A and have my wifi router to occupy ethernet port B? what are the implications, pros and cons of this setup? thanks in advance for your response.
Depends on your use. I have both. If you want to use the wifi extensively and if you use a lot of bandwidth (over 100mbit) use XR500, otherwise R1 will do. What you can also do with a R1 is run it along side your existing router, DMZ it and just use the geofilter. Then only connect your games console. If you don't want to use the geofilter then there is no reason to buy either as you can get better stuff for the price.
Question, I've got a decent network up and running. Every device shows me high speeds except for the ps4, it's the only one that just won't give me high speeds. Any idea as to why the hell only the ps4 stays low in speed?
I have Verizon Fios. Is it possible to do this setup with a gaming router not being in AP mode. Because on some gaming routers if your in AP mode your not able to use the attributes or functions of a gaming router... i really need help with my gaming setup.
This video has quite a bit of bad information. 1. You can put the gateway in bridge mode. 2. Double routers creates interference and loss of packets. 3. QOS prioritizes your gaming traffic, other traffic will be deprioritized. 4. Adding the switch is unnecessary and adds latency if you're adding a router.
if i have a powerline and i put the qos to high priority and connect one end to the powrr and the other to the wall and plug it into my pc will it still be high priority??
I have a Cisco epc3925 provided by my ISP. It has both cable and gateway properties told in this video. Can you please tell me what I need to get? Because I think I'm in the middle ground of everything and I'm so confused.
i have a spectrum modem and a netgear router. i have no other ports in my modem to hook a ethernet cable directly from my modem to my xbox so i hook my ethernet cable from my router to my xbox. what do you suggest?
So with the last set up would it still be a good idea if I wanted to to hook up a gaming router (Nighthawk Xr500)then still hard wire them to the console system instead of through Wi-fi ???
Hey john, i have a normal gateway at home and i ordered the netgear s8000 switch for the QOS function. I have already prioritized all my devices on my router, should i delete all off the prioritized settings if i also want to preoritize on the netgear switch? Or is it okay if i prioritize on the router and the switch?
I have xfinity modem and router combo. I'm thinking about getting the netgear cm1000 and the xr500 . What do you think of the set up? I hardwire my ps4 upstairs but downstairs I use wifi for my xbox one . Should I get a different setup?
I also have a gateway through AT&T fiber. I just ordered a asus axe-16000 to up my gaming performance. So basically I hook the asus up to the gateway then disable WiFi on the gateway?
is there any other option beside the netgear s8000? another switch with a good qos software. Just asking because I havent seen any other nighthawk s8000 for sale at least not on my country.
did you do a setup for a cable modem with a wireless access point without a switch? Im using motorola MB8600 with a Nighthawk R6700v3 ps4 lan connection. I'm not getting the same speed I was with a gateway. I have 600 down. I've set my QoS to highest on ps4
What if I had two isps, one handling WiFi devices the isp with gateway is handling my gaming devices which is are wired. So I should be good with this setup and not need a switch correct?
How do you disable the WiFi from the other router? I have an additional gaming router but it says double NAT so how do you disable the other router that the modem is plugged into (which is a fios router).
So one ethernet cable from gateway to switch and then everything on switch? My gateway has four ports (1 at 1gbps and others at 500mbps) If i use just one to connect all of them through switch, wouldn’t it hurt my bandwidth usage???
for the first part of the video just use bridge mode (ip pass through ) in gateway this will pass the internet directly to the router to handle it and the gateway will switch off the wifi automatically my setup is 5G modem+ netgear d7000 modem/router
You didn't explain how to turn off the wifi on the gateway. Also, if I'm understanding this correctly, I would need to purchase a router in order for this to work? Or could I just buy the switch and set my PS4 to high priority? I play with a LAN cable.
@Glasscock.. question for yah.. I have att fiber as well. And use the same pace 5268ac gateway. First thing I did was bridge my Netgear R8000. I had the 1000mbps plan as well. But what I was always noticing was my download speeds were always cut in half but my upload was doubled. I would reset everything and I’d get the correct speeds. Then a little while later it would slow down again. So my question is... Did you experience these same issues when you bridged your router? And now that your using this switch it’s balanced itself out.
Hey, I have att fiber and I use their gateway, I don't have anything hardwired except my security system, a cloud decide and a Netgear router used for my wifi devices including my son's ps4. Since installing the Netgear router, the speeds have decreased drastically I'm using the nighgear x10. What can I do with the current setup I have without adding a switch to get the most of my speeds? How can I configure my gateway to get the best results thorough my Netgear router? Any suggestion as far as settings and current setup?
so i have at&t fiber would i connect that into my spliter s8000 then connect that to my xr500 in my room and that would be better than having my main router to my xr500 by itself or should i also but the multiple ips from at&t
Hey great vid so I'm only going to get 12mbps and I have a satellite dish wired going to a wire. To a router and running a Ethernet cord to my PC will that just make a more constant connection and if I get better like gear what would I need thanks in advance 🙏
I have 2 ethernet connection behind my xfinity xb6 router/modem what if I use one for xr700 and use the other for a switch and connect my pc, ps4, xbox on the switch and keep the xr700 on wifi will that work or should I just use my own modem instead of Xfinity's modem/router. What are your suggestions please comment

I don't understand the difference between the managed switch and a DHCP enabled gaming router.. Couldn't you just disable DHCP on the router and use the built in qos and wifi capabilities without it confusing the IP assignments from the cable/dsl gateway?
can you make a video on how to disable dchp on your other router
Maybe
John Glasscock
I have att fiber 1 GB speed and I’m stuck with their 5268AC modem/router.
Legit Plays I went into my router setting and looked under LAN and I disabled DHCP server and put googles DNS servers as user defines, but when I try to put att’s IP address and subnet it breaks the internet 😑
@@Dmarcuz i think at&t prevents that.
Was the IP address from the att router?
GLASSCOCK does your router have to be from the same company as your isp.. say im with sky.. so my router is sky and my isp is from sky.. can i change the router and the wifi will still work?
I dont know that depends on the company. You will have to call and ask
You should be fine. Not every gateway has a DMZ function
Can we switch to modem mode from our broadband provider hub to own net gear hub...should work right?
damn def. appreciate the info sir thank you
I have a Asus GT-AX11000 and a Netgear Nighthawk CM1200, i pay 1000Mbps but only getting Wifi 275 down and 41.1 up, Hardwire 575 down and 41.5 up, is there any functionality i need to change on the gaming router?
u make it more complicated. just use the router as ap mode
How about bridge mode it turns a gateway into a modem basically and you can also shut of firewall at least for me with Comcast which I have done and then use everything from my XR500 router.

I didn't get any switch, but i followed your instructions and disabled dhcp on my access points. Nice improvement on response time.
How I do this in my neighbor's router?
so what is if i use a gaming router like asus rog ac5300 with my gateway from isp ,, and disable dhcp in one of the devices ( the gateway or the router ) ?
I mean, you can try it but I've got mixed results depending on which router I'm using
It seems like it comes down to a compatibility issue.
You can put the gateway in bridge Mode so routing is disabled. That way you're only using Asus Rog to route traffic.
Servers are trash on Bo4. Nothing will fix the connection
True
@Cameron Watson NANI!! servers are fucking trash for me
I get like 15-30 ping
Servers are trash there 20hz
I get 60-70 ms
In ap mode I lose parental controls for my wifi. Anyway around this?
Do you just use the switch then or do you always need the ASUs router because you only showed the ASUS in the diagram when connecting via WiFi? Please
If I play games on my pc would I set it to high priority or use a lab cable and do the bridged mode thing
Michael Cui I don’t think anyone can answer your question here, try posting it on Reddit or a forum.
Which router is best sir NETDUMA R1 or XR500
Shaik Saleem xr700 only has up to (wifi ac or 5) or the rax200 by netgear coming out soon. Gt ax11000 by asus also is sporting the new wifi 6!
Can this be done with a regular router given by a isp?
Would it be ideal to have a rented modem and a nice router? I dont understand why or if I should buy my own modem
Your input for a tp link sg108e for a manage switch for a gateway and two wifi router set up?
I have a question. If I have a modem, do I need a switch and a router or just a router? I run wifi and my Xbox.
Is your XR500 connected to your manage switch??
if i have a powerline and i put the qos to high priority and connect one end to the powrr and the other to the wall and plug it into my pc will it still be high priority??
Can I prioritize devices without a switch?
I never use wifi for gaming ever
Unless it's a mobile game
So you don’t need a switch if you have extra space on your modem?
I have the Netgear AC1750 Nighthawk. Is this good for gaming?
Hi , if i buy that switch , i have to buy a gaming router too or i can just buy just a regular router for wifi thanks
Should I get a different setup?
is there gaming router can deal with bad telephone line ( low SNR & high attenuation ) and make telephone quality better ?
So I should be good with this setup and not need a switch correct?
so if we have a cable modem...we dont need the s8000 correct?
How do you disable the WiFi from the other router? I have an additional gaming router but it says double NAT so how do you disable the other router that the modem is plugged into (which is a fios router).
And do I have to buy a managed switch because I’m using it for my game?
Search up the settings URL for your router and go there and turn it off.
HazyProduct good looks but been got it down
So one ethernet cable from gateway to switch and then everything on switch?
My gateway has four ports (1 at 1gbps and others at 500mbps)
If i use just one to connect all of them through switch, wouldn’t it hurt my bandwidth usage???
Aye is hooking up the Ethernet switch the same on the BGW210-700!?
Is it okay to use unmanaged switch?
for the first part of the video just use bridge mode (ip pass through ) in gateway this will pass the internet directly to the router to handle it and the gateway will switch off the wifi automatically
my setup is 5G modem+ netgear d7000 modem/router
how bout runnin striaght router instead of a switch? hope you can answer that question...cause havein lag issues with moden with wifi built in..
Because bridge mode sucks on the 2 in 1 routers
You didn't explain how to turn off the wifi on the gateway. Also, if I'm understanding this correctly, I would need to purchase a router in order for this to work? Or could I just buy the switch and set my PS4 to high priority? I play with a LAN cable.
It’s usually in your settings. You can access gateway settings with the URL that your ISP tells you.
What is the qos benfit if i play alone no others used the enternet?
can i use my own equipment with att fiber?
Hey I got a pc that I play all my games on should I set it to highest or high??
I have a Centrylink Modem, Router Combo and Have a Net Gear Night Hawk Router that I wanna use. I don't know how to set this up. I use a Ethernet cable to my PC and thats it. My parents use wireless connectivity for everything else. Are itnternet is also DSL and I don't know how to fix it. Are speeds are supposed to be up too 75mbps but i got around 8 to 12 mps only even when wired.
Can you use the gaming router as ur isp router
Is it better to connect the PS4 to the switch or the router ?
my nighthawk r8000 has qos on it, would you still recommend using a switch as well
I am subscribed, and I hit all notifications bell. Thank you again.
I have my Arris surfboard cable modem SB614, with my nighthawk R6700v2 router. Should I keep it like that or is it better to have the switch connected to my modem then use my router in AP mode? My download is 75 and upload is 8? Please help?
What about Wi-Fi mesh extenders with ap mode
