Identify your routers as MAIN router and SECONDARY router.
Connect the two routers with an Ethernet cable. This will be a permanent connection and this cable must always be plugged in if you want the secondary router to access the internet from the main router. This tutorial is for a wired connection, which is the most efficient way to do this.
It is very important that you plug the cable into the LAN ports on BOTH routers. On your secondary router, put a piece of tape over the WAN port because you will not be using it. The LAN ports are usually 4 ports that all are the same color and look the same. The WAN port is usually separated or a different color. DO NOT USE THIS PORT ON YOUR SECONDARY ROUTER. Only your MAIN router should have a cable in the WAN port that goes to your modem.
Your MAIN router is connected to the modem and has internet access.
On the MAIN router:
1. Ensure DHCP is enabled
2. Make a note of the IP address (usually 192.168.1.1 but whatever it is, make a note)
3. Make a note of the subnet mask (usually 255.255.255.0)
4. Change the DHCP pool of IP addresses to start at something higher than 2 (like 10)
On the SECONDARY router:
1. Disable DHCP (DO THIS FIRST BEFORE CHANGING IP ADDRESS!!)
2. Change IP address to the same as the IP address of the MAIN router except the last part should be .2 and same subnet mask of the MAIN router (usually 255.255.255.0)
IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT IP ADDRESS
DO NOT CHANGE THE IP ADDRESS OF THE MAIN ROUTER
1. IP addresses must be the exact same on both routers except for the very last octet (the last number).
2. The subnet masks must match exactly the same on both routers. All numbers of the subnet mask must match exactly the same, even the last octet (the last number).
3. Copy the IP address from the MAIN router to the SECONDARY router. For example, if the MAIN router is 192.168.1.1 and the SECONDARY router is different like 192.168.0.1 you will see the third octet (the third number) is different. Copy the first three octets from the MAIN router so the SECONDARY matches the MAIN router. DO NOT CHANGE THE IP ADDRESS OF THE MAIN ROUTER.
4. If one router is 192.168.1.1 and the other is 192.168.0.2 THEN THIS WILL NOT WORK. The first three octets of the IP address must match on both routers. If one router is 192.168.1.1 and the other is 10.0.0.2 THEN THIS WILL NOT WORK. Again, the first 3 octets of the IP address must be the SAME on both routers. Only the last octet can be different.

EXAMPLE SETTINGS
MAIN ROUTER
ip address: 192.168.1.1
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
dhcp enabled
dhcp pool
-low dhcp address: 192.168.1.10
-high dhcp address: 192.168.1.254
SECONDARY ROUTER
ip address: 192.168.1.2
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
dhcp disabled
dhcp pool doesnt matter because it's disabled
Optional:
Change the network names on each router so you know which network is located where. (For example, change the SECONDARY router network to "Erics Room" and the MAIN router to "MAIN" or "LIVINGROOM" or whatever you want). Don't name them the same thing!
Can this be done wirelessly?
Yes, but that is not the purpose of this video. Using 2 routers, turning one router into a WiFi Extender is going to degrade your WiFi. Yes it's a feature and you may be able to make it work that way. But connecting the routers with a cable is the most efficient way to connect the two routers. Maybe in the future I will do a video on this. But using the Ethernet cable between the routers is how I recommend doing it.
Does this address double NAT issue on Playstation or Xbox?
You should not have a double NAT issue as long as both ends of your Ethernet cable are plugged into LAN ports on both routers. If you were to plug your Ethernet cable into the WAN/Internet port on your secondary router, ONLY THEN will you have a double NAT issue. Put a piece of tape over that WAN port on your SECONDARY router and never use it!
Why do I need to disable DHCP on the second router?
It is true that if you do not disable DHCP on the second router that it can and may work temporarily and you may appear to have no issues. But eventually, one of those routers will assign an IP address to a client and then the other router will also assign the same IP address to another client and you will have an IP address conflict. The two routers do not share DHCP information between each other so they don't know what IP addresses the other is handing out. It may "work fine" at first, but eventually you will have an IP address conflict! The devices connected to your secondary router will magically know that they need to go to the main router to get an IP address assigned. Through the magic of networking :) This also requires the 2 routers are connected on the LAN ports on both!
What about if you just connect the cable and that is it ? I just did that and it works

It is possible this will work sometimes and maybe even temporarily. But in the future it is possible there will be IP conflicts.
Home Network Central I also tried the cable only method as my first option and it did work for a bit. However I did run into network conflict. Upon searching the web for some help I found this video and I set it up as shown in this video. Upon doing so my internet speed doubled, My range improved my connectivity got better I no longer have the issues that I did with my 2nd router thanks to this video. Steps are easy to follow good luck and thank you for your help.
Then your neighbors can access the secondary one, if you didn't setup a password and left it in default.
It wil work for you if you just connect to WAN port of 2nd router (note: not like LAN port in this video). Even You no need to disable DHCP in 2nd router. I think you can't acces 2nd router when you connect to main router.

I watched a few other videos on how to set up a second router and wasted hours trying to get it to work. Yours is by FAR the easiest to follow. Thank you! The only thing I would add is for the second router the first thing to do is just have the power cord pugged in & turned on and not have any cables connected in the second router for the beginning steps. It may seem obvious, but for me not knowing anything about setting up a router this would have helped. At first I did have the Ethernet cable plugged in, but started over and disconnected it.

Was able to run a CAT6 from basement to main floor thru a vent and now my 5G speeds went from around 50 mbps to 200 mbps...UNBELIEVABLE!!

Worked for me all I had to do is turn off dhcp on second router and connect to wan with ethernet. Did not want to reconnect all cameras to new router so just add existing router to new one, awesome! Thanks!

I think those are called mesh networks, which are usually expensive. There are also wifi extenders/repeaters.

@@Mahmood- Of course you have to login as an Admin. Then look if there's a network wizard so it's more easier to configure. And to be sure, disable the DHCP mode first before proceeding to the wizard. If there is, click it and you'll see selection for different mode like ROUTER, ACCESS POINT, BRIDGE and REPEATER. Just select BRIDGE or REPEATER and follow prompts.
Can you do this exact thing but without the cable? So that the routers are communicating with wifi instead of cable? I have two houses next to each other I want on the same network, but no cable in between them.
I have 4 router connected to each other, how do I connect this using this method? Do I disable dhcp in the other 3 (other than the main) and change lan to 192.168.1.x? x being 2,3,4.
That's correct!
That would be correct, but if you need that many access points for proper coverage I would strongly recommend either going the mesh route or using a WiFi system such as the Unifi line from Ubiquiti Networks. WiFi roaming will work better this way and setup / management will be much easier.

I’m late to this video but I have a question. Do you have to keep these routers connected with one long ether cable or can you separate them and have one be wireless since they will be in separate rooms?
I dont think you can have one seperate, since the secondary routers NEED to be getting their internet juice from somewhere
It depends on the AP firmware.
Most modern routers have a wireless extender mode.

Why would you ever keep a router covered in plastic? Without proper airflow you will eventually have overheating issues.

Thx for the video. I failed few times and give up. Today I got a new router, think to try it again. It does not work at the beginning. Till I figure out the issue. The second router should use the LAN port not WAN port. After that it works just fine.

If you guys want seamless transitions between the points look for Wi-Fi mesh products. You can have as many you want and they will be only one single Wi-Fi network.
I did that by connecting both routers with cat8 cable, similar process but the second router is in bridge mode. It basically becomes a range extender and there is just one network. Nice when moving to different rooms, you don’t have to switch networks. The live chat with a linksys guy was very helpful, we did it through the app on my iphone with split screen.

If you change the SSID and passkey on the second router to duplicate whats in your first router, will devices switch between them automatically to get a stronger signal?
Hey man. Can you please teach me how to change the password on the second router?
I tried this and although it would switch, it wasn’t seamless and it didn’t switch to the strongest signal. A mesh system does that job very well.
I know this is a year old, but the answer is that devices will connect to whatever one responds first, and will usually stay connected to that one until disconnected.
So it will sometimes connect to the slower one unfortunately.
Multi-band routers get around this by "smart steering", where basically they intentionally delay the response on the slower bands, to encourage devices to connect to the faster bands, but even then it's not perfect.
I do that and it works seamlessly for me.
I know it works because the last 1/3 of my house got no signal until I added the AP in the back of the house. Then I turned down the power on both so I did not congest the neighborhood with two full strength 2.4GHz signals. So, there is no way the AP reaches the front and the Router never made it to the back.
Anytime I change anything, I can see that the laptop change signal strength until the AP or router reboots and it, immediately chooses the strongest.
All my wireless devices are less than 3 years old. All my PCs are wired. most the time my laptops are WiFi.

Yes, otherwise the connection would not be stable.

why do you need same mac for both?
I realize my reply is extremely late and I apologise for that! The MAC spoof is a temporary kind of fix. Some people have luck with unplugging their modem for a few minutes and plugging it back in. That should "reset" the Mac address on the other end in some instances. Then you wouldn't need to do mac spoofing. I've had trouble with some isps in the past where it didn't work like that and I had to call them up and tell them I got a new router.

By turning off DCHP on the second 'router' you've turned it into an "Access point". It is no longer a router as it isn't doing any routing.
I'm using a Nighthawk XR300 which connects directly to a modem. I want to remove the Modem (it's faulty) and replace it with BT Smart Hub 2 and have my Nighthawk connect to that whilst still being the control center of my home network. The Nighthawk has 4 ports, all are taken up by other access points. My question is, Can I connect from it's WAN port to let's say Port 1 on the Smart Hub and still be the DHCP controller? The reason I want this to control my home network is that I have QoS setup on it and the Smart Hub doesn't have this feature.
I attempted it earlier but had no luck. Can this be achieved whilst connecting from it's WAN port?

@@nonleague8613 Not the way you describe it: BTSH is going to be your modem/gateway to your ISP; it needs to talk to your ISP directly.
You would need to configure your BT Smart Hub to passthrough mode (if it will do that).
Then plug the WiFi router, using the WAN port, to the LAN port of the BTSH. Your WiFi router will then get its WAN IP from your ISP passed through the modem.
If It does not have an easy passthrough setting, you will need to need to do a lot of manual settings that disable things like: WiFi ( I looked it up and you cannot disable WiFi on that modem or lower the power), DHCP and DNS on the modem and then use the WiFi router to do all you want but that can be very messy. (I am not familiar with the modem you want to use)
Otherwise you will be double NATted.
Which usually works okay but can be trouble.
After looking into that modem, I'd get something else.

Would like to use my second nighthawk router to receive signal from my primary one in my main room. Is this possible? Pretty much I would like to turn my older unit into an extender.
I know your asking to use without ethernet wire but if you have a coxail cable in your wall for say cable TV that's either used or not, you can use a mocha adapter and send your ethernet signal from your first router to your second in another room by way of the coaxial cable as long as the second room also has a coxail cable jack

When you disable DHCP on the second router, it's no longer handing out IP addresses. The IP addresses have to come from the first router. The second router has to have a static IP address on the first router and it has to be connected to the first router over an Ethernet cable.

I did everything till 8:18 but I'm not conectet via WIFI I'm connected vie ethernet also the Routers are is there no way of getti g the same result with ethernet?
i can only acces the router that is wired to my pc i can not acess the secondary router as long as that one is only conectet to my main router ....
I wish you would have shown where you disconnected the cable and connected wirelessly to the Linksys router. And then browse the internet not just logging on to the interface but browse the internet

The cable is to bridge the Router and the AP.
Actually, the router is not connected to the internet in the video.
And he did show to disconnect from the router and connect to the AP by choosing the APs SSID.

Is the final result a case of two routers and ONLY one SSID, which is just like mesh routers? Or is it two routers with two networks? I would like to set up two routers(different brands) and ONLY one network. Thanks.
The final result is two separate networks with access to resources on both. 2 SSIDs.
Ya that’s just two ssid
This is considered to be one network. You can change the SSIDs to whatever you want, but it will stay one network. In my network, I have 3 routers connected in this way with all having the same SSID for ease of use and connectivity throughout the house. It is one network, which is the point of this method.
@@Simpinski Did you perform additional steps such as disabling the DHCP on the secondary routers? You need to perform additional steps or else your networks are actually separate networks even with the same SSID and this is not ideal. For example, if your printer is connected to your primary router and now you perform a print function while being connected to your secondary router, your printer won't be able to receive this instruction.
@@rockybukus Yup, DHCP needs to be disabled in the routers. Actually my main router is not a regular consumer one, it is pfSense on an old laptop. I am using the consumer so called 'routers' as access points.
What if your main router is downstairs and your 2nd router is upstairs? (PLNA)

Yea it has to stay connected unless you set it up in bridge mode (wirelessly) but you will lose wifi speeds this way.

Thank you for the constructive criticism! since they are separate routers with separate Wi-Fi technology you can set them however you'd like. One can have WPA and the other can have WPA2 if that's what you'd like.

e.g. my AP does not have WPA3 but my router does; router uses WPA3 SAE CCMP and AP uses WPA2 AES.

I thought the second router was going to physically be in Eric's room. But since the routers are connected together by cable they are in the same room, so what's the benefit of this setup?
A gamer for example would want a router to themselves to download and play on so they aren’t slowed by others and others aren’t slowing them.
It's just an example. In reality the other router in gonna be connected by a longer Ethernet cable and in the other room.
Khayaam He was wondering that if the router wasn’t physically in Eric’s room and the two routers are literally connected to each other then what’s the benefit of doing that? I understand that a gamer would like a router to themselves in their own room to get a better connection. But for that you have to connect the router to the installed port on your wall. I might be speaking wrong facts so correct me if i’m wrong. Im just trying to get a gaming router to myself and i was wondering if i could just use the port that’s installed into my wall to connect the router and then with a different ethernet cable to my pc.

After I’ve done all of these steps can I disconnect the Ethernet cable and then move the second router into my room?
They will still need to be connected with an ethernet cable.
Home Network Central in the video is Eric’s room upstairs or like in a corner of the house where the internet signal is bad. Because my bedroom is upstairs is my signal is really bad

Move your second router to another room and use a power line adapter from router 1 to router 2! They are cheap

Hi sir , when I disable the DHCP server in secondary Router and assign a static IP . There is no Internet working in the Secondary router either on LAN or WIFI . Primary Router works well
This happened to me just 3 hours ago. Though it was working just fine for years. Even my router gets bricked so I have to reset it. 😒

Thank you for the video and all your efforts. You've just saved my wallet, I don't have to buy a Mesh wifi anymore. My old TP-Link ADSL modem router works just fine as a 2nd router (although it only support 2.4ghz), I may now use a personal wireless network connection with basically full signal all the time and let my family use the old one.

You could look into mesh routers. Either that or you can turn your secondary router into a Wi-Fi extender. Some routers have this option but others don't.
Wi-Fi extenders do not work the same as mesh routers.
use a powerline adaptor asnd this method. I use three routers as i have quite a big property and find it better than a mesh network.

A bad actor backyard neighbour has been rerouting my modem by using third-patty router to hacked my home and I believe he his watching us naked and using multiple Sid to do what he likes with our home network. We lodged a complaint to Gatineau QC local police and even national police called RCMP in Canada and nothing has been done for almost five years. A lunatic backyard neighbour.

He cannot get into your network unless you have a weak password and he brute-force attacked it.
Or you are using WEP.

In this setup, what's the difference between connecting to one of the 2nd router's LAN port vs its main Internet in port? The LAN port was giving me some trouble while the latter worked
Using the WAN port would create a double NAT situation. It is not the proper way to set things up.

Ok, once setup, do you put the 2nd router into Eric’s room physically? If so, how do get it setup as an extender? My goal: set up 2nd router to extend/expand WiFi signal to a distant room in order to access internet as I do from my closer device in my living room. Followed the instructions on how to configure routers but got lost after what to do after setup completed. My biggest unanswered question is: how is the 2nd router established in Eric’s room to connect to the 1st router WiFi network? Wirelessly or through a cable connection(which make for a long cable)? TIA..

i have 1 gbs up and down on my main router wirelessly on my iphone. is there any reason why i am only getting 40mbps wireless off my iphone off the 2nd router i plugged that is LAN connected to the 1st router?
Thanks for this. I got myself muddled up trying to do this by setting up 2 domains, then trying to link them using static routes. I didn't think to just reserve an IP address for the second router and turn off the DHCP on one of them. Thanks for helping!!
