@Vera Don't feel bad, you're not the only "dumb" person when it comes to tech. With work at home, I now have two devices that I need to connect to the internet via a corded ethernet connection. I know this is a necro post on a 6 year old video, but thank you for your clear and simple explanation. My elderly parents were upgrading their internet provider and didn’t understand all the jargon the ISP was using and what equipment they needed. This cleared it up perfectly for them about internet modem and router duties and uses.
A couple of points. First off, these days, the only place you'll find analog is on the local connection to your home or office. The rest of the Internet uses fibre and is also digital. Further, both the phone and cable companies have moved to hybrid networks, which means the connection is analog only as far as a node in your neighbourhood, where they convert to fibre back to the ISP's office. Of course, if you have fibre to the home or office, then it's digital all the way.
@@MathCuriousity Much of the cable and phone networks is hybrid, that is fibre to the neighbourhood and copper the rest of the way, with a "node" where the conversion takes place. This means there's an analog signal, over copper, into homes. The cable or ADSL modem is used to convert that analog signal into the digital Ethernet data, that is then passed on to the router or computer. Of course, for those who have fibre to the home, there is no copper portion prior to the home.
@@James_Knott one final question if i may: so if as you say most companies have moved to hybrid, does that mean even though i pay for cable internet and not fiber, am i getting fiber anyway since u said it converts to fiber outside my house?!
@@MathCuriousity It makes no difference as to what you pay. Even when fibre is available, the cost is the same as what you'd pay for the same service over coax, at least around here. You pay for the service you receive, not how it gets to you. That said, they may offer incentives to change technology. It happened when digital TV came out. A couple of years ago, they gave me a good deal to switch to IPTV and in the process my Internet connection went from 150/15 to 500/20 and bumped up to 500/30 a few months ago. Just pay attention to what they're offering and you may wind up with a better deal.

What a beautiful video 😭 Nobody makes videos as good as you. The explanations are perfect and clear, this FINALLY helped me understand something that should be so basic.
let me be honest with you, this is farthest the best video i have ever seen on this topic covering all hub, switch, router, modem. keep this work in continuation. u have everyone's blessings who have learned from u.
sir, yr video MODEM VS ROUTER Explains very clearly how they function and the difference between them. Its animation Is praise worthy. yr explanation in the background Is very clearly audible and helps in understanding the subject. WELL DONE. thanks s.vatsa, Bangalore
Never plug anything directly into the modem without a router now like you said most companies combine the modem and router into one box but the main purpose of a router is mostly to give you a security gate way. This stops hackers from hacking anything that’s connected to the modem like a computer for example. The router has its own IP address and the modem has a separate IP address. It’s like having two passwords as protection. Plus cable modems are being kinda phased out reason is the internet is usually shared with the block of houses at peak times can slow the speed down DSL or phone lines are not shared every home as its own direct connection.
I agree best explanation ever. Man you are good. Clear precise and you repeat to make sure we understand I think this guy was a teacher but a good one thank you very much again

This is a great video for those of us who didn't grow up with computers. I have internet coming in. I can connect to UA-cam and FB and Gmail but nothing else. I have no idea what the problem is, neither does Comcast or Apple.
Your videos are phenomenal! I've always struggled to understand the difference between hubs, switches, routers, modems etc. Why and when do we need them? Is the device in my home and provided by my ISP a router, or a switch, or a hybrid? It's always confused me, but this video and your video about Hubs, Switches and Routers has completely answered every question I had through some beautifully clear animations - thanks so much!

My God! Every single video you make is top notch quality. Easy to follow, clear and precise with perfect amount of information for anyone to understand. And animations just elevate all of this. Your videos helped me a lot. Keep it going!
This is one of the BEST and MOST HELPFUL explanations I think I have ever come across! THANK you SO MUCH! You don't know what a life saver you are! During this pandemic when we are all forced to rely on Internet my life has been a living hell due to my tech ignorance so your video was MUCH NEEDED! Thank you again. The visuals really helped and so did all of the details, definitions and many examples and scenarios. You and this video are a BLESSING! God bless you for this. Be encouraged!
I love your videos. Getting ready to take my network + exam 10-006. I always watch your videos as a way to simplify complex issues.
What a beautiful video 😭 Nobody makes videos as good as you. The explanations are perfect and clear, this FINALLY helped me understand something that should be so basic.
I was a teacher and i used your explanations in my teaching
so I really appreciate your work

Good to hear...thanks.
You're the best when it comes to IT explanation, no one can do it better ;)

sir,

Thanks
Never plug anything directly into the modem without a router now like you said most companies combine the modem and router into one box but the main purpose of a router is mostly to give you a security gate way. This stops hackers from hacking anything that’s connected to the modem like a computer for example. The router has its own IP address and the modem has a separate IP address. It’s like having two passwords as protection. Plus cable modems are being kinda phased out reason is the internet is usually shared with the block of houses at peak times can slow the speed down DSL or phone lines are not shared every home as its own direct connection.
Now THIS is what all UA-cam instructional videos should strive for! Thank you!
We want MORE!!!
Videos on:
Active Directory
Windows Server
Security Protocols
Cryptography
Cyber Attacks
Connection types
Subnetting
more...
I agree best explanation ever. Man you are good. Clear precise and you repeat to make sure we understand I think this guy was a teacher but a good one thank you very much again
Thanks.
This is my current favorite channel on youtube
Some company’s have modem/router hybrid combos, which means the modem is in the router and functions as both.
You obviously didn't make it to the 4:00 mark.
Thank you sir for teaching us better than our lecturers in University👍🏼
I like your all videos when I am stuck in my study I feel nervous but after watching your videos I am very happy and I easy to understand your concept.please one more video you can make on ISP thank you so much.

Rovan Sniper
LOL your joking right?
@@PowerCertAnimatedVideos You know, now, that basic videos have to pass the litmus test. ;`>
That was the best explanation anyone could have given! I sincerely hope you have given serious thought to a career in teaching, on some way/level. Maybe even a textbook/tutorial writer in multiple mediums.
This is a great video for those of us who didn't grow up with computers. I have internet coming in. I can connect to UA-cam and FB and Gmail but nothing else. I have no idea what the problem is, neither does Comcast or Apple.
Excellent explanation, i'd wish this level was on schools/universities as well!
LOL. Maybe the dislikes above came from some of the teachers at those schools/universities. Or maybe from the competition.
A dozen youtube videos later I finally understand how a router works
I got it first time. Guess I was lucky. lol
After 6 Years In 2024 I Got Recommended This Video & This Video Is Well Made👌🏻
Thank you so much for explaining it! Me and my roomate were so confused ab this and didn't know what we needed to get 😅
My roommate and I!
Finally, I understand what modems and routers do! Thank you so much.
Finally starting to learn about this after years of having no clue.
LOL you Too huh?
My God you are just amazing. I loved it, the way you are teaching it just amazing. I love you. Thank you. Love from INDIA.
For someone like myself who is a ludite, this came across loud and clear! Thank you!
Outstanding video! Well produced (animation, story telling), very well narrated and you did an outstanding job explaining in simple terms.
Ensign: "Captain, we're receiving some strange signals from another location in space!"
Capt: "Did you _demodulate_ them?"
Ensign: "Uh.......oh, right. It's...Earth, checking in."
Bro this is the greatest and easy understanding of how a modem and router works. because I never understood where exactly the internet was coming from. thank you 💜
Thank you." Your a great teacher."
You're*, Sorry, I guess I'm a great English teacher, as well.
Beautifully explained. Well done!
