Budae Jjigae ARMY BASE STEW made with SPAM, instant ramen & American Cheese
Вставка

- This Korean stew was born out of necessity -- utilizing army base surplus which included American cheese, SPAM, hot dogs, and baked beans. The combination of flavors and ingredients had me intrigued, so I decided to make it for myself just so I could taste it. 😇 New videos every Thursday and Saturday!

I'm not sure what's up with my voice in this one, but it was shot right before I came down with a cold...I blame the germs.
Is it sped up slightly?
emmymadeinjapan lol oh, I thought I was just being paranoid.
ta daaa yeah I was thinking the same
No.
😂😂😂
Honestly I'm jealous of Emmy's kids cause they probably get to eat all this amazing stuff made by their mom lol
Hallodin's Hammer oh no why would you say that!!! Don’t think of her like that.
Hallodin's Hammer Emmy is pretty young, we try not to sexualize her
It’s a compliment
If her kids are eating her food then I'm more jealous of her. In my family we cook all sort of great food yet the kids will only eat chicken breast, white rice, bread, cheese. Even worse when they refuse good food and order fast food 😫💔
Honestly tho
Miss Emmys a very amazing woman she chops wood she keeps bees she a mother of two kids and she cooks amazing dishes and she keeps the Earth clean and safe and peaceful and full of love I don't know anyone else who can do what Miss Emmy does your truly a amazing woman.😄
Daww...thank you, but I'm sure there are millions of other people who do the same thing, but thanks for making me feel special. 😊
Agreed! She’s just totally awesome! ♥️ XOXO
Lem Hemsweoth Never 😆
Please go away, grammar nazi
Lem Hemsweoth Does being negative towards other people truly make you feel better ?
my dad's new boyfriend is Korean and he's brought all sort of dishes like this into my family's life. I love them a lot ^_^
Lovely 💓
Awh....isn't Korean food full of flavor and spice! Love that you are so open to the different foods!
Omg dads boyfriend 😍
Awww that’s cute!!!
200yearsago ah that's so cool, also I'm bi qnd squealed a little when you said dad's boyfriend haha
Looks like something college kids would scrape together. And there is nothing wrong with that.
It also has all the basic food groups. It must be great with a cold frosty beer.
Since nearly anything can be souped or stewed... you just gave me an idea on how to feel like eatin fancy while in college...
That's what my mom drinks when she makes it lol 😂
Like maybe some PBR or Schmidt beer😅
The sound of the Garlic crushing was omg 😍💕
I love that sound.
Future ASMR videos perhaps?
Very ASMR (I'm not very into that but IT IS a satisfying sound 😂😂😂)
Rayona Ray ok that's when my dribbling STARTED lol
Right? Made me want to eat tons of garlic!
Maangchi is my favorite. Everytime she uploads, I feel like I'm going to see my Korean grandmother. Is that odd?
Not at all, her recipes are solid, just what you would expect from family.
Jared Phillips not odd at all I feel the exact same way😆
I wouldn’t go all the way to “grandmother” 😂 More like an aunt
I love Maanchi I wished she was part of my family giving me delicious meal making me chubby full of food 😂
BTS's Dimples Agreed. Lol
Maangchi changed my culinary life. She is a goddess of UA-cam.
Do you watch Hot Thai Kitchen too? I can't remember her name, but a great channel.
i'm glad that emmy does a lot of ideas with spam in them.
i grew up eating spam because i was born into a lower middle class almost working class family it was pretty affordable & quick and easy to make but i was always self conscious about eating it around my friends because they though that spam was weird and gross. i always felt that they thought i was weird for liking it.
Yoo Jeongyeon Is QUEEN it's so good when its pan fried and it's so versatile 🤩
Let them think that, just know that for years, Spam was the go to solution for hundreds of thousands of soldiers, outdoorsman, wartime civilians, and the industrious working people of the western world.
When you eat Spam, you don't simply eat a canned meat, you join a long history of proud and honorable people.
Yoo Jeongyeon Is QUEEN I feel you
Spam is just ham and pork shoulder. Since pork is a pretty seasonal meat, they have to find something to do with the supply for the months it’s not that popular.
Spam costs more than fresh meat nowadays.
Green onion tip: Save the white ends, plant them in a pot and they will regrow :D don;t give the pot too much water though. once or twice per week using a water spray bottle is enough.
Yes, I love doing this. I like to stick the ends straight into the soil and voilà - more green onions!
Thank you im going to try this!!
It's the best :D
jody024 wow, I didn't know that. Thank you for sharing that.
Also saving them and letting them sit and dry out is great for soup stock make sure you rinse them before use to remove the dust or whatever has settled on them
"Spring has sprung..."
**looks out at 2 feet of snow and ice**
Sure, Emmy, I believe you.
ALAPINO Lol! It's 73 and sunny here🌞 But the pollen...🤧😩
Yeah, but Hell has the benefit of not actually being in Florida.
Hahaha! :P
“Spring has sprung...”
*looks out to the 103 degree sun*
Emmy you’re a little late there 😝
"Spring has sprung..."
*looks out the window to see pouring rain*
I think you're a little too early, buddy...
I think rain is a weather not season.
What I wouldn’t do for an Emmy / Maangchi collab!!!!! I’d die.
Man, this dish looks like absolute heaven. I LOVE it when different countries "interpret" other countries' food. Thanks, Emmy!
Dried kelp is 다시마 (da-si-ma) in korean!
It’s great for college late night crunch studying! Sooo delicious! Mushrooms and broth and uhhhh! Just heaven
I know this is not the most healthy foods to eat, however, during this COVID time, it’s a great pleasure to have someone to show us how to eat on a budget. I’m all about making foods like this and also stretching out a simple dish for one & turn it into for four ppl. It’s called creativity & old school. I’m impressed by this one.
Hey Emmy! Kombu = dashima in Korean! :) And Korean chili flakes = gochugaru
Emaline L. Actually Kombu and Dashima are same but different in languages. You can find in either Korean grocery store or Japanese grocery store or Asian market.
Erdyanto Dwi Nugroho that's what I meant :) I'm aware Kombu is Japanese. I just didn't wanna say "kelp" cuz there's many different kinds of that whereas Kombu/dashima is specific to a kind of dried seaweed used for stock
Emaline L. Ok, here this is information that make you clear.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kombu.
And in scientific name of this is Saccharina japonica : en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccharina_japonica.
Erdyanto Dwi Nugroho uhhh helloooo. thats what she meant. lol. at 1:15 emmy asked what was kombu called in korean. she was just answering the question. i'm here cause i was also curious to know what is kombu in korean. she answered it. do you comprehend much?! hehe
Erdyanto Dwi Nugroho Aduh dia itu sudah menjelaskan hal yang sama dengan apa yang dijelaskan di tautan wikipediamu dari awal. Yang kamu permasalahkan aslinya apa ya... hati-hati ya lain kali.
"There wasn't a lot of food around" but that stew is so full of fresh and nutritious ingredients!
Looks amazing!!!! I’ve recently discovered the delight that kimchi is. So delicious. I just made kimchi stew Saturday and it was great!
I love Maangchi I'm so happy you made a recipe based on her videos!!
Tell us more about your compost bin! How do you start the compost? How do you use the compost you make?
This had my mouth watering. Such an interesting mix of whole food and processed food. I thought I had seen every single Maangchi video but I have not seen her do this. I will find it!!
I adore Maangchi! You did her proud, I bet! What a gorgeous bubbly pot of jigae! I love the sound of a bubbling pot of soup or stew or even curry. Nothing says “Comfort Food” Like a big ol bubbling pot!
Hi Emmy! I lived in South Korea for 6 years. This became one of my favorite Korean dishes to eat with friends. At first, it sounded kind of gross to me (Who mixes baked beans, hot dogs, Spam, kimchi, ramen, American cheese and assorted other ingredients into stew???), but after one taste, was hooked! Don't knock it till u try it! The history behind the dish is also interesting and sort of sad. Thanks for sharing, now I really want to make and eat budae jjigae!
Oh where did you find THAT GARLIC PRESS? I've never seen one work so well!
I LOVE MAANGCHI!
I'm so happy you know her as well.
You should collab with her!
I love you Emmy! Another great video :))
that looks amazingly good. I love Korean food. thanks for teaching me something new to cook. love your videos emmy!
Great video, Emmy. I always learn new things from your culinary experiments ❤️
I've got to stop watching this channel when I'm hungry! That looks so good!
My 6 year old son watched wirh me and he giggled and said booty jiggy lol
I have watched all of her videos and have made several of her recipes.
But the real reason for watching is she is absolutely ADORABLE!
I love budae jjigae and Maangchi! Thank you for sharing with us! ❤️
I love your vids! Seonkyoung Longest is another great UA-camr that does asian meals at home! Love Maangchi too! Awesome video!
Kelp/Seaweed is called Dashima/다시마, Shitake Mushroom is called Pyogoh Buhsut/표고버섯 and Dried Anchovy is called Mareun Myulchi/마른 멸치. This looks really good Emmy!!! :D
Yay, mini Korean lesson. 🙏
you are the sweetest, calmest person ive ever seen i wish i knew you personally because you'd be like a breath of fresh air. thank you for being so awesome!
Best part of my evening is getting to watch Emmy , absolutely love watching to see what foods she will be eating or making , she can always make you smile with her smile.
I’d eat it! It’s fun watching you. - thanks for another great video!
You're welcome!
Hey that's my maiden name! Hi Brandy!!!
Brandy Coomer lol 👋🏿
Either you are very exited, or you edited your video faster with a high pitch 😂😂😂 Emmy is that you? I love you anyways and your crazy foods ❤
Lilly Roman yeah it looks a bit sped up too...hmm
Wow, so weird! I didn't notice that until you said it and when I turned down the playback speed it sounds closer to what she usually sounds 🤔
Lem Hemsweoth sorry. English isn't my first language. So I sometimes misspell things. 🤷♀️ thank you for the correction!
She was sick
Looks amazing!! I love Maangchi's recipes, they are all really good!
My colleagues used to make this during lunch at work. (I worked in Korea for 8 years). It's very yummy. They didn't do all this though - they made it with Ramen, gojujang, and spam. Simple. And I miss ddak soooo much! 😫
Love this!!! Could you do a video on composting?
I can imagine there wasn’t enough of any one thing to feed everyone so they put everything they had in the pot 😊
Budae jigae is such a good food to make with leftover bits. So cheap and so bomb!
That looks amazing i may have to try and make this just so i can try it thanks for the video emmy hope you have an amazing week
It's called 다시마(dashima) in Korean! Many Korean soups and stews use stock made with dashima and dried anchovies, sometimed dried mushroom too
We don't put salt in the stock though, seasoning is seperate
yenee94 Kate h
there're are no rules to cooking. if maangchi salts the stock first, that's her prerogative; maybe that's the way her family has done it. your family may do things differently than other koreans.
This makes me irrationally excited for the Mi Goreng noodles I ordered from Amazon to arrive tomorrow lol
I’m Indonesian so we have surplus amount indo mie or mie sedap... hope you enjoy it!
Ohoho that stuff is dangerous👏👏👏 drugs right there once you start u cant go back 😂
So good. I am so happy that I can find it in my local grocery stores here in Utah.
they're not even similar to this stew lol! xD but i love mi goreng noodles too
n a m j o o n I think she was saying she cannot wait to make this dish because she has ordered the mi goreng and she can use that for the ramen noodles which is one of the ingredients in this dish
You know when you're enjoying a dish when you start wearing it a little bit in your excitement. I must eat this thing now!
This looks so good I love watching her cook it's so soothing and calming
My favorite UA-cam mom :)
The kelp is called 다시마 (Dasima/Dashima)
Aw sweet I have been going through your back catalog and found this.
One of my best friends in college was a S Korean gal who introduced me to this. We used Alabama cabbage and canned anchovie, & Vietnamese fish sauce & ramen, and sanbol ulek, and Murka pork n beans; I gather it's a "sorta" recipe.
Love the jazz sax in the bg. Keep doin what you do. You are awesome.
I’ve always wanted to try this, thanks for the recipe Emmy ^_^
Emmy can you please do more Fruity Fruit tastings? I really miss those
I made seonkyounglongest version and it was amazing, a very “guilty” food let’s say most definitely not a constant item but a once in awhile item
This looks lovely! Thanks for featuring some good Korean food! Happy Eats Emmy~ :)
I made this two nights running now (once for my husband and tonight for my older son). It's soooo good! Yesterday I didn't have all of the ingredients, so just used what I had. Today I even had the rice cakes (first time trying them)...what a fun food!!! OMG! I'm obsessed! I loooove Maangchi, just never made her recipe bc it was so big. This is perfect! TY!
Spring hasn't made it to Illinois yet. Lucky!
Wait, where's my bib?
I love how Emmy said 먹자 (let's eat). She could've said 잘 먹겠습니다, but it is kind of long, so I don't blame her. xD
Woohoo!!! Been clicking refresh for the last 5 minutes. Really need this video tonight!
Yay! It's Emmy day! Love love love your videos!
why does Emmy's voice sound chipmunked?
Big Sausage Is your playback speed sped up?
Big Sausage - it is weird. I slowed the video down to 0.75x and she sounds more normal. Though still high pitched.
She was getting sick
Cause. Japanese.
@@rymaracabre2479 she's not Japanese
Yaaayyyyyy where's my bib🤔😋😁😂
I LOVE Budae Jjigae, everytime I go to a Korean restaurant I always order it!
This has to be my favorite video youve done. You look just so happy and adorable enjoying it. I really want to make this now. 💗 I had a crap day this video made it so much better.
I love the various Spam's, while most people do not.
No, I have a college degree. The name of the product is Spam, so to indicate various types of Spam is Spam's.
I got to thinking about it. The better way of saying it would have been " various types of Spam."
Yay I just got so excited your video just showed up 😘
Oooh I adore Maangchi♪
Her videos are so calming (and have nice stories to go with the delicious food)
i'm on a diet binge watching her videos and i must say this one really broke me. i'm so hungry! and this stew looks so freaking good!!!
It may just be me.. but you sound different in this vid Emmy. A bit more higher pitched. Maybe I am crazy. Fun vid otherwise
Niki Rose yes! I hear it too! It seems a bit off.
Haha i thought i was the only one
I thought the same thing lol
Oh my gosh I thought I was alone
Niki Rose i was looking for this comment lol
“Where’s my bib?” :) X
Lem Hemsweoth you must be new here.
Lem Hemsweoth read right the way down the description .......
There’s always a suggestive comment from Emmy, I wonder how long you’ve been viewing our delightful Emmy...??
I love maangchi videos. This looked so good Emmy, if your sick I hope you feel better
Love u and ur videoes!! So cool looks delicious!!
I'd fry the meats and tofu first to give them more flavor.
Making me hungreeeee!!!
I recommend saying "잘 먹겠습니다 - jal meok ge sseum ni da" [I'll eat this well] than 먹쟈! mukjah [let's eat].. it's more in line itadakimasu 🙃
Budae-jjigae is one of my favorite Korean dishes. I make it so often!
OOoh yum! This looks so interesting! Sorry about your cold, Emmy, take care of yourself!
Where's my bib?"
Lem Hemsweoth heck...
@Lem Hemsweoth you do realise that she said for people to comment that in the description?
you sound different today Emmy 🤔
This looks sooooooo gooood, Emmy always makes me crave what ever she's eating.
The recipe is awesome because it's so versatile, I've made it a few times, even for a potluck
As soon as she said american cheese i said eww and she said “eeeh”
Lem Hemsweoth ???
Manhattan there's no other way to eat grilled cheese
it’s so yummy in this tho >.
Can you make different recipes for deviled eggs?
This video is a dream come true for me. I love Maangchi and Emmy ❤️
I always enjoy your little jig when you obtain bliss with your food 😄 You are a joy to watch. I am still curious about the red lanyard/string around your neck.
This seems like the tater tot casserole of Korea. LOVE IT.
Omg this is one of my FAVES! It's so delicious!
Emmy! You should start a series of cooking and tasting Korean food!
Where's my bib?
You looked like you REALLY enjoyed this dish! It looks wonderful!
Two of my favorite YT ladies in one. I love Maangchi so much and when I read the title of the video I automatically thought of her. Emmy did amazing on this! I love watching how to make different cultures food, and Korean is my favorite.(maybe that's my best friends influence)
I love Maangchi! I have followed her for many years. Her cookbook is beautiful!!
I love Maangchi, and knowing you enjoy her videos makes my soul happy. It's like having two perfect, happy youtube moms!
Where’s my bib?
Lem Hemsweoth - Read the description please.
emmy your content is the best!!
Wow! This looks so good!
South Koreans love hot, spicy, garlicy soups to cope with their brutal winters. (In the North, they eat dirt and grass.) I only wonder where the cheese and beans went.
Rocky Raab "In the North, they eat dirt and grass."
...
Well, every country has their regional specialties.
Nah, I'm Korean. I prefer spicy, garlicky foods during the summer where everyone's craving strong flavors. Last winter I survived eating fish cake soup and bean paste stew ^^ of course, it all comes down to preference and region.
Budae Jjigae is my jam, love Maangchi's recipes. Nothing beats this stew on a cold midwest night.
This looks so good ugh!!!!!
Vegan friends, If you'd like to do this recipe also a woman on her named Rose@CheapLazyVegan did this also! ua-cam.com/video/N2BFRce-pxc/v-deo.html
Emmalee YASSS TO THE KOREAN VEGAN QUEENN
OMG THANK YOU! I was thinking this recipe looked really good but since I'm vegetarian I can't eat it.
YASSSSSS
You're welcome!
I tried to be vegan cuz I was done with meat after seeing parasites in the raw meats. And was trying to lose weight. But I ate another meal and noticed there was meat after I finished eating it 😂 starting over.
Emmy is the only reason I'm ook forward to Mondays 🙌♥️
