The theory that Ian proposes honestly feels revolutionary. It's been years since Control was released but, to my knowledge, no one before now ever questioned why some Altered Items cease exhibiting paranatural properties when surrounded by Black Rock. I think that the idea of paranatural properties coming from an external source ties back to the Other mentioned on the whiteboard outside of the Mail Room. The Other mentioned in the message on the whiteboard was the source of all parantural phenomena and artifacts. This may be similar to what could be the case with Altered Items, except there may be multiple sources. One final thing I'd like to mention is the Cincinnati AWE which resulted in the FBC taking a plane to the Oldest House. Despite its suspected altered status, it was found to be normal. While it originally seemed like it was just a false alarm, it might've actually been severed from the source of its paranatural energies.
Frankly I was just doing some free writing when I scripted this. Wasn't thinking about it too deeply but as I went further into it the more I realized the implications of how Black Rock functions on the nature of Altered Items. It is nuts to think. Especially when you consider the Board saying, 'Objects of Power are Holders/665 to the Blessing/Other."

@GamingUniversityUoG My theory is that altered items are connected and resonating with counterparts across multiple realities and are thus projecting aspects of other realities and what's happened in them into our own.
The thought of someone from the Blessed organization popped into my head when you mentioned the balloon potentially being bought at the hospital. They come in under the pretense of visiting a sick family member, buy the balloon at the gift shop, alter it and then drop it off were it can do the most damage which could also explain how it mysteriously appeared.
There are a few cases where it feels like they are involved. Not to say they are responsible for everything but we have seen them making them artificially before so it is not out of the question.
My thoughts on this are semantical. The difference between Coincidence and Synchronicity comes down to if the individual perceives it as being relevant to their life. Once we begin paying attention to that stuff we see it all the time.

I think The Black Rock absorb's some Paranormal Energy's that Dappens The Alternate Items Capabilities and some it absorb's completely and some it has no effect on. Maybe The Balloon is a Demon Possesed Item feeding of The Kids Negativity and The Black Goo is a Bi Product that The Demon gets The Dogs to eat so they Die to cause more Negative Energy to feed on. Just my thoughts respect and keep up the epic work Dean.
From what we gather black rock acts like a mineral which blocks a range of wavelengths. Like lead can block certain kinds of radiation. But anything outside of this range can pass through. Begs a lot of questions.

Just slapping unprocessed black rock on your body offers no protection, yet it seems the frequencies it blocks can be somewhat changed. However, it could also just depend on hedron/polaris.
I find interesting if it was a sin eater since it still produces the black substance while in containment. Perhaps the range is being dampened of the transferring or it is still producing since it is trying to make it self get well since it being dampened in some way would be a negative. There is additional possibilities about what can be can considered well. Could it make a person forget or overcome trauma or make someone happier if they are sad.
This is going off the idea that this is how it works. No confirmation of it. But to me it makes sense since the idea behind these hospital gift shop ideas are to ease the experience of the person inside. Thematically it goes well together.
I don't really think the altered objects are "vessels" so much as they are signal relays. We already know the Hiss work this way, same thing with their natural enemies the Hedron and Polaris lifeforms. The supernatural energy is not able to persist in regular space without being constantly reinforced, and the altered objects soak up the signal and, because they are objects that exist in normal reality they "anchor" it there, allowing it to persist in an environment that would otherwise be inimical to it.
Minor interesting idea: If the balloon acts a source of fluids of some sort, that can slowly trickle out of for the use of someone/thing to consume it, does that make it more of a literal "well" ?
I find my self thinking of the concept of hado witch I've heard is the ability to affect and move the fluids like water and air (Air just being a lighter fluid) into a force like the hadoken from street fighter. Their have been real life where people would invoke hado on things like forming ice and distort the ice crystals, the same kind of experiments have also been done with prayer. But praying was thing that that could be ran for a long distance.

I had this as head canon for so long the realized that Remedy never confirmed if the kids got better. Hence my little rant here haha.
