OMG! I want to cry. You have my grandma’s exact accent and her way of German knitting. My mouth is trembling as I write this teary-eyed. Now every time I watch your videos I’ll think of her. Thanks so much for doing these videos. She passed before she could show me anything more than the rudiments of knitting. But she showed me her way, the proper German way. I can’t follow people who do it the English way - it makes no sense to me.
Oh yeah! Scarves are great as first projects, and shawls are wonderful for learning shaping. Also, don't be intimidated by cable or lace patterns; they're easier than they look (especially Orenburg and Estonian lace since you always get a rest row)
It sure is. I mean, not gonna lie to you..shawls can be incredibly complex. But to start out...there are some great, great beginner patterns. In fact, I am inclinded to say that the simplier the pattern, the better it looks around your neck. Knit a simple triangular shawl in garter stitch, use a stunning colorway (not too busy but maybe with some speckles), and then add some tassles in a contrasting yarn and it will look amazing. And the best part, you could go up one or two needle sizes and it will look a bit lazier and is faster to finish! :)
You are such a good teacher. I have been struggling with garter tab cast ons for 2 years, and you just fixed every issue I ever had with them in about 10 minutes. I cannot believe no one ever told me I could just use a crochet hook and my active yarn to just pull up the stitches I needed! And I've been picking up stitches along the side of the tab completely incorrectly, too. You make it all so clear, thank you so much for making these videos.
Wow! Of all the hundreds of videos I’ve seen explaining these construction methods, this is by far the most comprehensive method I’ve seen! Thank you so much for these explanations! ❤❤❤

Oh Norman your new studio is gorgeous. I adore the yellow and blue. I've been into mustard yellow for a few years. I have a lovely faux fur lined hooded vest I love. Yellow coats are fashionable when u live on the ocean. Makes you visible like the old timey fisherman and their waxed coats.
I had one like that. In fact, before i moved I threw away my earliest rain coat (from when i was 7!) and funnily enough it still fit...allbeit very short ^^ It was yellow on the outside and blue on the inside and you could wear it inside out and i was so proud of it
My first shawl which was one of my first ever knitting project deserves a place here I think. The construction was very easy.. It results in a triangle shape that is not a rectangle triangle but is flatter, with longer sharper points. It starts sorta sideways at one sharp point of the triangle, then (with right side facing you) you make 1st row, 1 increase on the left, 3rd row 2 increases on the left. On the wrong side, you'll knit the 2nd row and then knit the 4th and do a decrease on the left side. And repeat these 4 rows. This will result in a rapid increase on one side and a slow decrease on the other, making a slanting piece. You can continue until it's as long as you want it. The original pattern added other features but that's the gist of the construction. And your last row will be one of the even sides of your triangle while the side with the double increases will be the longer "neck side". It's hard to explain, I'm sure you'd do a much better job at it than me. The original pattern is available for free on ravelry as a DROP pattern.
Cool! So... on the "wrong" side, row 2 does not have a decrease? So a total of 3 increases on "right side" in rows 1 and 3,, and a total of 1 decrease on wrong side? Does that sound right sound right? I wanna try this!
Okok, questions for Norman and wildfireswildfires6792... it sounds like the difference btwn WFWF's pattern and Norman's asymmetrical is WFWF has the increases on the right side and decreases on wrong, and also has 3 increase to every 1 decrease so grows by 2 stitches each row, while Norman's has increases and decreases both on right side, and grows by 1 stitch each right side row? So... main difference is WFWF's is... more asymmetrical if im reading it right?
@@DoeMeNeek sounds right. The stitch is... Darn, can't remember the name. The easiest one where you always knit. Increases are yarn overs, creating lacey holes on one side and knit 2 together for decreases.
@@DoeMeNeek not sure. (It's not "my pattern" btw, it's a drops pattern you can find in ravelry for free). "Mine" actually increases 1 stitch in every 4 rows and makes the whole slant left wise
Thank you for everything I could learn from you, Norman. I always go to your channel when I find myself stuck while knitting a new thing. You are an excellent teacher. It is a gift. :)
Thank you so much for this video. I watched before & knew you were the go-to when I was ready to make my shawl. I love that you show me how, without telling me what yarn/needles I have to use. Again, THANK YOU!
I have not done a shawl pattern ever and have been knitting for more then 10yrs and needed some simple explanations on construction and this is the video that I needed to get to the nitty gritty. Thank you so much. much love.
As always, your instructions not only make it clear but also make the reasons for each change clear too. When I made my first shawl, I was so frustrated that it wasn't a point - turns out I was knitting top down and didn't understand that for quite a while. At that point, my ignorance of the basic construction became funny and that shawl is now a work horse; meaning it functions as I'd hoped but I'd like longer tails. So thanks to your tutorial, I feel confident that picking up stitches and adding a few inches to the top will give me what I want from it. Thank you. By the way; that's a very dramatic wall behind you - it makes a lovely backdrop. Bold but not distracting. Very elegant and appropriate for your style.
Hey KW. very happy to hear my videos can help you along. And yeah, those 5-point shawls are just so pretty and can look truly stunning if you fill them with the right kind of lace motif!
That was very thorough. I have been wanting to learn how to knit shawls but didn't know the basic starts, nor an understanding of how to continue. This video has an amazing amount of information. Thank you so much!
I have literally just discovered your channel, I love listening to you talking, you explain so well and you are so relaxing! Thank you for sharing your experience!
Thank you for your expertise, and generosity in sharing your very accessible patterns! For years whenever I fell in love with a yarn I would buy one skein and many hand spun, hand dyed yarns joined my stash. My happiest project was a gorgeous mohair hand dye “art” yarn and after too long worshiping the yarn one day I grabbed my size 13 needles and cast on the simplest garter stitch shawl. My treasured yarn sang in this simplest of stitches. I received more compliments than any lace, cabled or fair isle projects. Thank you again for your inspiration!
I can well imagine that. Yarn quality matters a lot. The other day I had someone commenting and doubting my assesment that picking the right yarn might be 40% of the actual work involved. Well... I should direct them to this comment :)
I’ve never joined Patreon for anyone but I joined yours to give it a try and support the wonderful work you do!! As a new knitter I’ve learned so much from your excellent videos and website.
I quite enjoyed seeing all the different shawl style. My favorite has always been the Faroese shawl as it sits so well on the shoulders. Seeing your 8 patterns I think I will try a 5 point shawl to compare. The border stitches chapter is giving me ideas. Thank you Norman.
Thank you, what an amazing pattern with incredible details and instructions. I appreciate all of the effort it must have taken to make it. I will learn a lot from this, makes this shawl helpful and interesting at the same time.

This is AMAZING, Norman! I was going to find a free ravelry pattern for my first shawl, but this video gave me all the tools to improvise one myself! Thank you so much.
Norman your tutorials are done so well. You explain it so well. Your are my favorite knitting UA-camr. The only thing more that I would want is to somehow download all of your knitting knowledge into my brain or for you to write a book.
oh my! I have looked at SO many knitting videos, and yours is the first I feel I could actually follow and do. Your video shots are so very clear and closeup, and I can really see how you move the yarn and needle. I want to learn continental stitch, not that 'toss around', because it seems so much more ergonomic and less wasteful of movement. I saw on your blog you have a free knitting course, so I am off to begin there! I am hoping next year will be better for $, after both hubby and I retiring as teachers, and moving house 600 miles away. I will definitely look into joining your Patreon then, because supporting designers is very important! Thank you for all you do
@@NimbleNeedles I was able to follow the first part of the video, learning garter stitch and not dropping any stitches! I decided the yarn I chose didn't look how I hoped, so frogged the 9 rows and are now working seed stitch from your video. I am so thrilled! You really helped push me into giving a try, and I hope to become good enough to try that gorgeous shawl! 54 years of crocheting, and I can do it with all sizes of hooks, weights and types of yarns, but so wanted that soft effect only knitting seems to get. Thank you again 🥰😘

And I'll definite be picking up your lace shawl pattern, too. Thank you!
Thank you so much, Norman. Everything is easy and makes one creative in the manner you explained it. Even for Adventurous Beginners, it is very doable.❤😊

@@NimbleNeedles Thanks so much! That's what it looked like to me, the same hand / less involvement, with a more natural flow & movement. Thought of picking up my needles, see if more doable for now.

@@kalpanasarkar9331 Well, in my professional life but also on my trips to India and the neighboring countries I learned that there is quite a big mentality gap. So, what we Germans would think bold, brazen, or even insulting, partners in India would deem quite normal...and probably vice versa. So, i learned to accept that in a way. But of course, there are limits on either side, I guess :) but anyway, happy to hear my videos can help you so much :)
This was a wonderful tutorial. I have Xmas stockings to do first but want to attempt a shawl after today. I have admired your yellow shawl from many previous videos.

Thank you so much for all your tuition, tips and advice. You are an excellent teacher!
oh wow. see you on the other side then, Yvonne! It's not a real KAL (like with hashtags on social media etc). It's really meant for anyone to knit this shawl at their own pace :)
I have never been a shawl person as the patterns I came across always seemed a bit 'oma'-ish. I always preferred a simple straight scarf, but this pattern you created looks both simple and stylish. The black one suits my slightly goth aesthetic. :'D Danke sehr, Norman! I found my next project. :)
I absolutely love how informative your videos are. I always find some very helpful advice and appreciate the way you explain things. I will be for sure checking out your new shawl pattern. It is beautiful.
Superb instructions as always. Now I understand the various types of construction. You have especially helped me with these garter stitch triangle starts. I understand now that the reason to start a shawl like this appears to be to have a stronger or longer foundation for the borders and center. One thing that gets me into trouble are the top down shawls with hundreds of cast in stitches...is there a cast in that is easier to see and keep from twisting? After 290 cast stitches I always get them twisted as I work on circular needles. Any tips and tricks would be appreciated. You are and excellent instructor and I look forward to your videos very much so. Best regards from USA.
well, that is indeed a difficult issue - especially if it's a cast-on that doesn't create a first row in the same breath. I personally try to avoid thtese situations, haha! :) so, sadly I don't have any real tip for you here. I mean, after I cast-on i just kind of follow the cast-on with my fingers and feel if it's twisted. But that's much easier to do with a longtail cast-on than a single caston
Thank you for this very helpful video Norman I’ve never knit a shawl before but you have inspired me to try one and I must say I find all your tips so useful I could watch you knit all day ( I wouldn’t get much of my own done if I did though lol ) your new studio looks great by the way 😊Amanda xx💖💕

I so enjoy your tutorials. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise. You talk at a very good speed for teaching and assisted me in taking my knitting to the next level of enjoyment.
So far this is the best tutoring channel I've met on the net. Great presentation, easy to follow. Thank you
Thank you , this is beautiful, i hope i will make it grateful for teaching us a wonderful knitting, love and peace
This is the video that convinced me to join as a Patreon. I have been watching your videos sporadically for a few months but didn't feel I should join as a patron. I really liked this video and want to learn more about knitting beautiful items..
aww...very happy to hear that! thank you so much for supporting my work, diana!
Thank you so much for such clear instructive explanations for various shawls.
❤oh my! I have been trying to figure out which shawl to knit with my new yarn and I watched your video right before going to bed and I dreamt the design I want. And it was great to meet you, you were so kind just like in your videos! Thank you for the Shaw knitting video
awesome. Have fun knitting the, quite literally, shawl of your dreams, Rebecca!
Really like the structure of the Faroese Shawl. I can pretty much do a free style design in the middle!
Thank you so much for making this tutorial. The second method is one that I was stuck on in a pattern that I had purchased. I couldn't get it right no matter what I tried. Thanks to you, I'm able to move forward with my current project.
Oh..how awesome!
This is AMAZING, Norman! I was going to find a free ravelry pattern for my first shawl, but this video gave me all the tools to improvise one myself! Thank you so much.
You are so welcome!
Norman your tutorials are done so well. You explain it so well. Your are my favorite knitting UA-camr. The only thing more that I would want is to somehow download all of your knitting knowledge into my brain or for you to write a book.
haha..that would be awesome, wouldn't it? :) sadly, I cannot help you there :P
In black that shawl, is classy and gorgeous!
thank you
Thanks for so many ideas presented together to really give one ways to compare outcomes - and great instructions too - so clear.
You are such a great master of knitting!
Thank you for all you do
thank you for your kind feedback! Means a lot
Thank you Norman; what a great video on construction of various shawls! Following your instructions, I have just cast on my first five-point shawl!
Thank you so much Norman for this tutorial! I have become a better knitter with the help of your videos. And now I know how to do my first knitted shawl. You made me so happy. 🥰
awesome! i am very happy to hear that
This is a fantastic video. Thank you so much for explaining all of these so clearly. I've been looking for a pattern I can use to create a triangular shawl with stripes in certain colors and now I don't need one, I can do it myself because you've given me the foundational information I need. And I'll definite be picking up your lace shawl pattern, too. Thank you!
I've just discovered your channel and subscribed. I now have fallen down the rabbit hole and begun binge watching all of your episodes!
feel free..they are here to be watched :)
Thank you for this very generous tuto. So many great options !
This is the 1st time I've seen your videos. Love it
welcome to my channel, reb!
Thank you! I'm making The Basic Triangular Shawl and it's looking wonderful. ❤️
Thank you so much, Norman. Everything is easy and makes one creative in the manner you explained it. Even for Adventurous Beginners, it is very doable.❤😊
Great video. I started knitting shawls a couple of years ago and love them. I have been reading many books on shawl designs. Your video has helped me understand what I have been reading better. I always learn something when I read your blog or watch your videos. Thank you Norman. I wish you a lot of success and hope to have your input for years to come. That is why I will support your work on Patreon and hope that others who rely on your knowledge and expertise do so as well.
Bless your kind heart, Maria. Very happy to hear that you appreciate my work so much 🥰🧶🙏
Congratulations on the new studio! It looks beautiful. I love the blue wall!
same here. love it. i mean it was all in my head but very happy to finally see it worked out!
Wow so amazing I'm so happy I found your videos, I'm new to knitting, I just love your energy and techniques!! You know sooooo much !! Thank you 😊
This is such a fantastic, comprehensive tutorial! Thank you so much 😊
Hi Norman. Binge-watching your vids, playing catch up...getting the knitting bug again. Love your tutorials, absolutely fantastic and easy to follow. 💕I want to learn Continental knitting. Looks much easier on the hands. Thanks for all you do.
it certainly can be faster but doesn't have to be. Tho, for someone who crochets it's typically easier as you tension the yarn with the same hand.
@@NimbleNeedles Thanks so much! That's what it looked like to me, the same hand / less involvement, with a more natural flow & movement. Also hoping helpful to minimize arthritis, aggravated by certain repetition. I had hand & little finger surgery a few days ago, right where my hook hits, ugh, and going through crochet withdrawals! Thought of picking up my needles, see if more doable for now.
Norman! This video is fantastic! 😍 Thank you so much for the detailed explanations of everything - you're the best - and English is not even your first language 😳!
This was so interesting!!! But the top of fun was the “bloody beginner” at the end of the video 😂😂😂😂😂
hahah...sorry about that :P
@Alessandra Stefania Pent,
RIIIGHT?! I backed up the video to make sure I heard him correctly! 😛😹😹😹💖🙌😺
Vielen lieben Dank !!!
Wow thank you I knit blankets for charity going to knit some shawls now x
I love the weighted corners w tassels!
yah! makes the shawl drape so lovely
You are good at crochet. Love your videos.
This is just in time for me! I was looking for some easy patter as I want to practice triangle shawls. I am a beginner so these instructions are perfect for me, thank you a lot💓
happy to hear that. and make sure to come back anytime in case you have a question. and consider to start a little swatch before you commit. A shawl is often a huge commitment!
You’re amazing! I’m going to knit the wing shawl as per your directions. It will be a great stash buster.
it sure can be! Make sure to watch the second part of the video where I show you the garter stitch tab cast-on. You might want to incorporate a border (or not)
I m beginner knitter,thank you so much,awesome instructions 👏✌️
Thank you, this is an excellent well presented highly informative, demystifying video.
Simply super...I'm from India & after a few days , most utube Indian knitting channels , will be passing off your ideas as their own ....
oh really? that's...well kinda sad :(
mind if you share some examples?
Well , I can't remember any such examples right now , but plagiarism is quite common here.
I've been knitting for many years & I always learn something new & useful from your videos..keep up the good work ,Norman
But of course, there are limits on either side, I guess :)
but anyway, happy to hear my videos can help you so much :)
Thank you so much for this video! I can only imagine how much time it took to show us so many techniques and details
oh wow. Very happy to hear that! I hope you'll enjoy my shawl and your yarn while you are at it!
This was a wonderful tutorial. I have Xmas stockings to do first but want to attempt a shawl after today. I have admired your yellow shawl from many previous videos.
definitely don't keep those stockings waiting...xmas approaches faster than you might think... :)
amazing teacher
thank you from my heart
It's my pleasure, Pana!
Beautiful tools and masterful execution. Thank you.
Your first video in your brand new gorgeous studio! You must be very proud and this was a fantastic video and the options were ones I’ve never seen put together in a clear and concise way in one bundle!
i sure am. It kinda felt like a graduation party, haha!
Thank you for your help!!! I'm a learning knitter and I found your explanation and tips really useful and understandable, so thank you very much!!!
You explained everything so beautifully! Thank you for the wonderful video! I understand now! ❤
Thank you so much from Hungary ❤🧶❤
Looks very simple I will try this for my next shawl !! New subby🎉🎉🎉🎉
I loved this video. So much information and ideas. Thanks again. 😊😊😊
I have fallen in love with your shawl pattern, Norman - I have joined your Patreon today because of it! I can't do the KAL in real time because I am heavily involved wiith another project but I will definitely be making it as soon as I realistically can. Thank you so much for all your tuition, tips and advice. You are an excellent teacher!
oh wow. see you on the other side then, Yvonne!
It's not a real KAL (like with hashtags on social media etc). It's really meant for anyone to knit this shawl at their own pace :)
@@NimbleNeedles That is definitely my kind of KAL! :)
heh. same here. Definitely not a person for a granny square or doily kind of shawl either. But I guess, that's why I ended up with this design ^^
so, sadly I don't have any real tip for you here.
Wow, that was a super detailed pattern tutorial. Since I love knitting shawls, I quickly jotted down three of them :D Definately will knit those! Thx Norman!
hah! happy to hear there was something in for you
