Chevy Monza Raced to DEATH - Blown up engine! - Vice Grip Garage EP51

  • I finally got the chevy Monza race car ready for a SCCA rally race! We were late, but we made it. What we believe vega engine has maybe just enough life left to make a few passes around the dirt track. She has enough oil pressure, but sure likes to puke it out! Get some behind the scenes views of a rally race, Plus maybe the engine blows up? I don't know, I'm pretty good at blowing stuff up. Just habit I guess.

      Great fun. Thanks for the video. What about tossing an actual running enginator in her, move the seat back about 500 million meters and keep on taking her to the track. Also she needs a new paint dippin. Maybe something completely absurdish. Maybe purplishness or baby bottom pinklike

    As for the blowing oil, I used to do the old vacuum balancing trick on my Vega, which essentially was the same engine. Plug every opening leading into the block and just go full vac with no PCV valve in it if the blow-by is severe. It cuts the oil consumption WAY down. First learned of the trick back when I had my 70 Chevelle and it was a tip in a Chevelle tip book I used to get.

    My wife had a '75 Vega with that POS engine. They rusted out on the showroom floor! We bought a brand new Monza with the Iron Duke four cylinder four speed in 1980. The Vegas had no guts, but they were reasonably well balanced. The Monza was front heavy, and would swap ends in a heart beat on snow. It was fun to drive on dry pavement. Not a horrible car , we put 130K on it. Don't miss either car.

    In 1978, I bought a 75 Vega, 3 speed manual. Had 40.000 miles on it. And looked like new. I was 18. I drove it till june of 1980. I took good care of it, put a little over 60.000 miles on it, only repair was a snapped clutch cable!! I paid 1000 dollars for it. I sold it for 1500 dollars!!!, and the guy who bought it was very happy to get it. Saw it running around town for about 10 years. I changed the oil every 3000 miles, and told him to do the same. Apparently he did !!

    Love the show! You need a volvo! There are so many sitting in the grass for years with one small thing wrong. They are cheap and live to be run hard.

      There's a reason why so many of them are sitting in the grass with a minor issue. I ran the scale at a junkyard for three years. People were practically paying us to take them. We even fixed and resold some cars, but we didn't even check the volvos to see if they were fixable. They went straight to the crusher most of the time, because no one ever bought parts for them.They are a nightmare to work on.

      As a guy that's done the "4.3 for Glory" swap in a Chevette, which is a near enough analogue for the Monza... Just go L67 Buick 3800 supercharged and call it a day. The 4.3 kind of sucks for racing, 3800, hella good.

    • @BlueTrane2028
      @BlueTrane2028 4 роки тому

      @Dave Micolichek You're missing a few points. One, this is a negative value turd. Two, a rotted out W body GM with a 3800 can be had for $500 and under (our donor vehicle was $300). The 3800 in our Chevette put 250 to the wheels when it was last dynoed in November, before we put on a bigger throttle body and blower. Also running a slightly smaller pulley. It's pretty legit fast at this point, we run the risk of it being unreliable if we tune it up any farther. Car runs in Lemons, and while the Chevette is a budget exempted car, we're not super rich and wanted to keep it reasonable. Also, as the car sits, the weight distribution is 52% front, 48 rear. We have the motor counterbalanced with a '15 Camaro independent rear end. I'm not sure what a 350 or LSx weighs compared to our 3800, but it's probably more.
      Our L67 ran for 16 hours straight of full on racing, 2 8 hour sessions, also did a 4 hour test session before that.
      We killed 3 4.3s in about 7 hours of runtime before that.
      4.3 = sucks for road racing. 3800? Great.
      Also, for endurance racing, the SBC and LS both have a less than spectacular record on longevity. We all know they can run, but they don't like to run under G loads in turns for hours upon hours at a time.

    You are a winner in your son's eyes and mine too! I sold new cars when I came home from overseas in the army back in 1972. I worked for a Chevrolet dealer who gave me Vegas to drive as my demonstrators. The Monza was a couple of steps up the ladder and he was a Pale Face which meant you couldn't trust him! Proved to be true but I sold so many cars he had to put up with my crazy ways. The first new Vega he gave me as a demonstrator had to be wholesaled after I put it through hell. It reminded me of your Monza at the end of your race. Chevrolet presented me with a (like gold) Vega tie pin for selling so many Vegas. I don't know where it is today. I'll have to look through my junk drawers and if I find it I'll send it to you. Keep on Keep'n on!! Phil

    I had a '76 Sunbird from 1985 until 2002, when it got squished in a 4 car pileup. It still ran, but the body was warped enough that you could only get one latch to catch in the door. I had the odd fire 3.8 V6 and the terrible Borg Warger reverse h-pattern 5 speed. I still miss that car.

    If you really want to keep it, then my suggestion is to fix the frame, throw some tire chains on the rear wheels and weld a snow plow on the front and make some money plowing driveways. I absolutely loved the windshield replacement. It worked a whole lot better than I would have guessed. You are definitely a cool dad.
