      I'd like 2 ask u. I have a problem with (probably) overusing my arms as I start the downswing which gets my arms infront and I struggle with getting them back on plane early. To sum up, I need to be capable of just letting them drop near my body and then just get through the ball nicely. I feel like I've tried everything but I still push them over the top. Even if I move by pelvis like Tiger. Any advice to let arms work naturally? Thanks 4 reading

    I have spent big money on lessons and most of it was worthless. You guys nail it. All you hear is “hip rotation”. That promotes a horizontal plane and steep path. In reality, the hips open along the same axis as the right shoulder moves down the plane around the spine. It took me 20 years to figure that out. When I started focusing on shoulder movement and maintaining posture followed by a heaping dose of tempo, I’m much better. I don’t even pay attention to my hips and I’m open at impact. Great work!!’

    When Shaun talked about his back I was so there with him! I’m 47 and I’ve been struggling with consistency and back pain for 17 years. I finally found a coach who takes video of my swing and put his hand on my head just like in your video! At address I have an anatomical tilt that forces my belt buckle down and a sweeping curve to my lower back. He’s got me actively engaging my core to point my belt more at the ball and less at my feet. I’ve also found that practicing in the mirror, like you recommended is very helpful to match my feels and reals. Now I’ve got a sore right upper rear hip from learning new motions. But major relief on my back! It’s exciting and good to know I’m not alone. I’ll be using the windmill drill for sure. Thanks for all you do!

    I am so grateful to have found you on UA-cam. I really enjoy your Am Vs Pro series were I can visualize the difference we make. I learn better by visualization and you 2 make it very easy to understand. My friends would make fun that I would start my transition forward before I got to the top of my backswing. So I started pausing at the top of my backswing. That messed with my head for a couple years but after watching you 2 I'm now hitting my Mizuno blades pure again. A huge thank you to both of you. Sequencing example by Mike at 8:50 where he shows out of sequence (hips lead disconnected) and in sequence (hips and arms move in coordination) is a great 5 seconds. Would love to see more about the nature of this coordination, what it is, how can we learn to recognize it (by feel and visually), and what drills we can do to improve coordination of arms & hips? Great lesson. A huge industry has been built on teaching golfers to downswing from a weak position at the top; namely, a flat shoulder plane. Learning the correct shoulder plane makes every other aspect of the swing exponentially easier (timing, sequencing, and shallowing become non-issues). It's hard to learn, especially if you've been swinging with a flat shoulder plane for a long time, but well worth the effort to learn it.

    This video is four years old so not sure you will see a new comment. But I also watched your live lesson that stresses on the backswing the left shoulder dot on GEARS should not go too low but should follow a shallower downward diagonal path. That appears to be the path that would be created by your windmill drill when you simply tilt forward to address the ball. The club stays outside your hands during the first half or more of the backswing as you show in both videos if you just move the handle and shaft together with your chest and don’t let the arms fold across your chest and too far behind you. However, in this video you seem to be saying that the left shoulder should turn lower on the backswing. With your client in the live lesson you show that when he did that, turned the left shoulder down too much, it caused his spine to tilt towards the target on the backswing forcing him to tilt away from the target on the downswing thus creating a weaker swing and possibly a fat strike. The shallower left shoulder turn with his spine straight allowed him to shift on to his left side correctly on the downswing and make good contact. Is there any conflict or difference between the shoulder turn you show here and in that live lesson video or is it that your great work with GEARS just revealed a subtle but important difference? Anyway, thanks for everything you post it has been a great help to me, an 82 year old who has played for over 60 years.

    Hey lads. Your videos have really helped my golf. I don't golf anyway near as much as I want to and yet my ball striking has improved a lot. The first time I saw you show the shoulder tilt and rotation using the gears was a huge change up. I don't think about my hip turn anymore, it just happens. Contact improved and I even started getting a draw. The problem was I had been spending so long trying to get a draw with the crap swing that now my major miss is too much draw or sometimes a hook. I would love to see a video about what that could be.

    I'm 56 and have been through it. Twice. I see a lot of instruction out there advocating for lots of spine tilt/bend at and through impact. I know that the quickest way to a bulging disc is through sheering force and spine impingement. What's your opinion on trying to create this movement? I believe that the hips can open through impact while still not bending your spine sideways, thereby minimizing the chance of injury, and focusing on releasing the club with your arms to create speed. No need to keep rotating the upper body any more than the natural force of the follow through to finish will create. Opinions?

    Any chance you guys can do a video comparison of an amateur vs pro in regards to the side bends in back swing and downswing paired with the forward bend? I know the right side shoulder movement video is a similar concept, but a shoulder line angle with respect to horizontal plane (front view) and vertical plane (side view) would be very good information for me (and probably many viewers) since I have a tendency to not have enough bend in my downswing. I struggled with turning until I realised that if I bent my left side as I turned, my left shoulder went down and my shoulders were on the correct angle. Likewise on the downswing as I turned I incorporated a right side bend which put me back on the reciprocal shoulder plane. It prevents me from turning flat on the back and downswings. Thinking side bend helped me.

    Another great video gents. Is there a gears on this also? I was wondering if you tilted a gears figure to look at the swing from top of the head so hips are directly under the head (I.e. not directly above a folder but on that 40 deg angel) then I guess this would prove the point further and show a pro pivoting around the spine angle (40 Deg) and an amateur moving off that pivot axis. If this makes any sense 😂

  • @76MUTiger

    So the hips will fire to support the rotation of torso and arms, so no need to intentionally train to move hips first. Since hand speed is so important, we want to focus on getting them moving ASAP! Is there a role for focusing on the turn of the torso (as fast as possible) to support the quick movement of arms?

    the lowering of the right shoulder is effected by the way the right forearm drives thru. thru the years players have been taught to simulate the low right shoulder position at impact, but this only makes a player fall back on the ball and hit behind it. they teach us to duff the ball and then they call us duffers.

    For years I've always thought the biggest issue with my swing was a lack of hip rotation. I have been working on improving this both in terms of practice and education (watching instructional videos mainly). Today I had a lesson where I was covered in sensors and had my swing captured in 3D. It showed I had 5 degrees of chest rotation at impact (square) and 25 degrees of hip rotation. After my coach explained how my lack of chest rotation was also restricting my hip rotation, since I'm not particularly flexible, I hit a few more shots with a new swing thought: rotate the chest fast with the aim of trying to get it to face my target at impact (this was just a swing thought not a realistic goal). The difference was instant. I changed my path further right and my dispersion was good. It also helps with exiting left. When I was remeasured my chest rotation was 23 degrees and hip rotation 45 degrees. All this time I have been trying to open my hips when the key to it was rotating my chest! I wish I had seen this video sooner!

    Would you say by left arm parallel as a rule of thumb to be what percentage of my total shoulder turn. I really am trying to work on my sequence in the takeaway and back swing as well as help verbalize this to my students better.

    What do you guys think about keeping the right (rear) heel down as long as possible in the swing to combat early extension and helping rotation?

      Not a fan at all of that, SD. That's not a good way to fix early extension... at best it's a late bandaid that often falls off.

      @@AthleticMotionGolf If I may comment to the holding of the trailing right foot towards the impact: It is not good idea, yes, early extension does not happen to that degree anymore, but in my own case, I do not pivot through the shot since keeping the right foot on the ground keeps me from doing this motion. So, I myself have to find a way to get rid of this bad habit...

    Perhaps as a part 2 to this, once we get that good tilt at the top of the backswing, how can we get through the follow through with the same tilt? I know I tend to backswing correctly but then starting down I'm afraid to let my left shoulder rise (as it should because it's on an angled plane, right?) because I think I'll hit it fat, but that can keep my right shoulder from pointing towards the ground or having a good plane at impact. Basically, how can we keep this great plane at impact after we've attained it atop our back swing?

      The number one best way would be to get the arms moving down while the left should stays down. The most common killer for that is golfers tilting their shoulders to lower the arms.

      @@AthleticMotionGolf ah okay great! I think you even had a video showing you need to let your arms drop vertically during transition before swinging through. I can definitely focus on letting them get towards shaft parallel before letting my left shoulder raise.

    I believe in this concept and I've tried to practice it but inevitably my ball flight is toward the left, sometimes way left. This move tends to produce an over the top motion for me where the club is releasing too soon and traveling outside to in. How do I make the chest turn properly to get speed and distance without the over the top move? Appreciate you comments. Thanks, Charlie

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 років тому +1

      The chest can be moving spot on and still give you that over the top move because the chest isn't holding the club😉. The arms also have to be moving down (or even back) enough to offset the outward rotation of the chest. That's why the idea of passive arms or leaving the arms up is so damaging for many golfers. Would you say the core should also be feeling this turn? So we’re using the abdomen and lats to generate a better connected trunk rotation? Or is turning the chest the best feel? Or is it more individual? 😊

    • @AthleticMotionGolf
      @AthleticMotionGolf  5 років тому

      The feels can be somewhat individual, but remember... the hips are starting with about a 45 degree head start. The chest has some catching up to do😉

    • @mikerodrick2430
      @mikerodrick2430 5 років тому

      The turn is from the core, not the chest. The key is to keep the core & the chest connected. If you're using your core, your chest will be where it should be but the hips must move slightly laterally before the turn begins. It's all timing which is why the game is so hard.

      Okay, who would like to answer this one?... both shoulders and hips can easily move independently and disconnect from the middle region of the trunk, is turning this area more important to an athletic motion and effective swing than shoulders and hips?! Do they react to this movement and could you guys at AMG put some numbers on this area? 😊

    The hips and shoulders may move together BUT in the race between the two, the golfer would likely be better served, in my opinion, by focusing on rotating their hips so that at impact the hips will be 15° to 20° more open than the shoulders. If the golfer thinks about rotating the hips and shoulders together, there is a good chance the shoulders will catch up to the hips too quickly and that neither the hips or shoulders will be sufficiently open, if at all, at impact. I have no doubt that a lot of great golfers give no thought to maintaining this separation, but I suspect they have so grooved the proper hip rotation into their swing that they barely feel their hips rotating at all. But for most golfers, maintaining the proper separation does not come naturally. An image of two objects tied to a rope just came to mind. If the rope is tight and I pull one object, the distance between the two will remain the same. If I pull one object and push the other, the distance may close because I may inadvertently push the one object more that I pull the other. The analogy between the rope and the golf swing is not perfect, my only point is that the shoulders may catch up to the hips too soon, whereas there is little to no chance (in an otherwise reasonably good golf swing) that the shoulders will catch up too late. Am I mistaken?

    I understand that the better players employ a right side crunch on the downswing; this was not mentioned in your video. Could you provide some guidance on how to achieve the impact position of the tour Pros?

    After taking videos of my swing, I have noticed my shoulders are flat (no tilt) specifically with my driver (left shoulder doesn't go under my chin then up and away/behind) would this be causing a massive pull?

    If you rotate your chest with your hips, you will yank the ball to the left & you probably will hook it also. You must learn to rotate your hip a bit, and then, perform a side crunch. My results are best when I push my hips toward the target, side crunch to form the backwards K, and then, swing toward the target. I perform an un-rushed one, two, three motion and get straight ball flight and good distance. Moreover, there was an unexpected benefit from "crunching": my right elbow was easily able to touch the side seam of my golf shirt. I believe that made me very accurate.
