This is by far the best tutorial on growing strawberries that is out there. And I’ve watched many. There’s not a lot of gibberish going on in the video and doesn’t take up your time, he just gives the facts and information in a friendly manner. Thank you Period
Cheers for watching - so pleased you've found it useful.
Yes agree with you ☺️
Agree 100%

Just to agree and say Thank you, I am busy to run to the garden and starting planting my strawberries 🌞❤️
I bought 2 each of 3 varieties in 1999. I brought a dozen or so with me when I moved in 2009. I don't know how many plants are out there - I mostly just let them get on with planting their runners, only removing any which look a bit past it. They are a staple part of my daily breakfast most of the summer. I regularly make a wonderful strawberry & kiwifruit with black pepper sorbet from any that I can't eat fresh. Last year I was too busy to make this, so I just froze them. They do lose texture, but all winter I have had a handful in my breakfast, they don't lose flavour or scent. Nice to have winter strawberries with no transport costs!
Lovely to have strawberries during the winter - you've got a great system going there clearly. :-)
Or chemicals
Ben, I want to say thank you to you. Your videos are excellent. Your mannerism is gentle and caring. Great teacher. Thanks once more.
You’re very kind to say. Thank you so much for watching.
my 12 year old strawberry plants still yield delicious fruit...not sure why people say they only last a couple years. Mine are also in a tiny amount of soil in cinder blocks and get minimal water
I think that's because you damaging them a bit so the come back stronger
@@ladyb5888 I know.... right???!!! Thank you😁
@@Potatoe659How do you damage the strawberry plant? I want to experiment it with a another strawberry
That’s awesome! How much sun do they get? I was just given 2 young strawberry plants and have the slightest clue on what to do 😅

I am a new gardener and this video really helped me a lot. I didn't know you could buy strawberry roots to start planting until I watched your video. I went out and purchased some after watching. Can't wait to see how they grow and bloom. Thank you for a very informative video!
Great stuff - I hope they grow well for you. :-)
Your channel is the only gardening channel that i actively look forward to for new videos. Great job
This is the shortest, most concise and comprehensive video I have yet to watch! Thank you so much!
Love them! We used to have the tiny wild strawberries in our old garden which grew profusely like weeds. They tasted absolutely incredible! Almost perfumed when very ripe. Not had any like that for a while.
I know what you mean. They're growing out of a stone wall here - just left to their own devices. And they are incredible!
seeing you be upset about the noodles but then immediately going to improve them is amazing and inspiring to me! i would've given up but you didn't and i really respect that! I love your videos. And it's an honor to have you visit our channel, we can discuss more about our experiences in harvesting and building farms.
Thanks so much for that. I watched one of your videos and was really impressed by the quality of it. Really enjoyed it. :-)
Having grown strawberries for over ten years, I'd definitely recommend anyone grow them. They are really easy to look after, and can be very productive. Even if you only have a balcony, you can grow plenty of delicious strawberries in containers.
@Rebecca Kearney Hello, to be honest I've never tried making nettle fertilizer so I don't know much about it. I always use tomato fertilizer following the directions on the bottle, and I always have good results. Good luck :)
@Rebecca Kearney I'm no expert myself, but I would agree that a nettle based fertilizer would contain more N than P and K. N(nitrogen) may be good for early growth or waking up overwintered strawberry plants, but the plant mainly needs K(potassium) for fruiting
Any more tips for growing strawberries?
@@youngmeesha582 They need plenty of sunlight and plant food. You may need to cover them with nets to stop birds eating them but it's never been an issue for me. I'd reccomend putting straw or hay around the plants both as mulch and to prevent the strawberries touching the soil as it can make them rot (this is why they're called strawberries!) Good luck :)
Thank you so much!!! I haven’t found a video that gives so many tips and tricks about growing strawberries! I honestly was worried this is the first time planting of any sort. So thank you 😊
Thank you! I am a new gardener and I’ve been wanting to grow strawberries and this tutorial will help a lot.
Thanks for the tip on whether to rotate the bed and also to cut away the older leaves to reveal the new shoots. I needed to know that because my plants were getting very bushy and messy and I was not sure how to deal with it. Thanks.
Yesss my favourite growing series on UA-cam. This has cheered me up a bit due to the passing of Prince Philip so thanks for posting
No problem Ben. All a bit of a shock losing Prince Philip today.
Now only I know that he has passed away.
Careful who you idolize. Garden on
We've just started our first strawberry patch. Thanks for the tips !!
I love your videos. You just don't talk, you show how to do it. You have beautiful gardens. Thanks for the videos
Thanks Elizabeth.
I appreciate the compact and precise information that is given here
One of the best videos for growing strawberries I've seen! All the main topics covered, straightforward and very encouraging for a beginner like me! Thank you for making this video.
So pleased you've found it useful Olga. Thanks for watching.
@@GrowVeg Can I ask you, I am going to plant strawberries in raised containers , my garden soil is quite bad, lots of clay, I doubt I can use it for planting. What would be the best to fill containers for strawberries , just general compost from the store or compost mixed with rotted manure, also from the store? And then top it up with liquid organic feed regularly? Thank you.
You always make consistently good content. Thanks, you've helped my own plot out no end.
So pleased to hear that :-)
Agreed...best most upbeat channel! 👍
I've got mine in hanging baskets and this is my first time trying to grow them, very excited!
I also have in hanging baskets 😊
do you have the regular hanging pots or upside down kind of baskets? ive heard the ones that grow upside down are supposed to be good to use but ive never tried it. i just wonder how hard it is to use those instead of the regular kind?
Great video Ben. Strawberries are a big favourite in our house so always have to try and grow loads
Geezs, plenty about strawberries and I just planted 12 crowns but different types.. Such Great info! God bless!
Thank you Ben for the green fingered tips on how to grow strawberries 🍓 much appreciated.
You're very welcome William.
I'm really happy i found ur channel, just got my hands on 60 plants, thank u for the info 👍
I am happy to find your videos. Your garden is the most beautiful, healthy and happy garden I have ever seen. I have been watching your videos from Florida and taking notes since I started a new garden.
That is so kind of you to say. I hope your new garden is coming along beautifully - I'm sure it is. :-)
Best tutorial ever. I'll definitely try!
I wish I’d seen this video last week just before I planted out my strawberry bed! Great tip about cutting off runners in yr 1. Thank you.
Me too 🤪
So true! Home grown strawberries are the best. So much sweeter than store bought. It's like a totally different fruit!
Isn't it Karl!
Hands. Down ! I picked strawberries for the first time last summer and it was thee best! I thought I was being extra about it but they were so juicy and sweet and bigger and just everything 😊 and they lasted me much longer than any store bought strawberries. I am still in awe. Everyone needs to start growing something. It’s just so much better ❤️
In indonesia they are sour :(
About 10 years ago i bought a hanging pot with wild forrest strawberries (the small, very sweet, aromatic ones) for my terrace. at one point i thought the plant died off and just throwed the "dead plant" into a corner of the garden on a pile of soil. 10 years later: my garden is full with wild strawberries! Somehow it spread and now they grow everywhere between my roses and bushes. Its amazing... did the same with raspberries i bought: plants with early and late raspberry sorts mixed on a wall with afternoon sun.. so in good years i have from early summer till late summer/early autumn fresh raspberrys i can just pluck them, wash them and eat.
That’s wonderful, you have naturally very green fingers and thumbs!
I'm currently growing Camarosa strawberries. They are large and very sweet, though sometimes hard to come by as they are grown commercially. I discovered them at a "you pick" strawberry farm. You probably see these huge strawberries in grocery stores, so if you can't find plants, grow them from seeds. Of course, the ones in stores aren't as good as home grown. 😊
Thank you for a very informative video...this is my first attempt with strawberries (bare root Elsanta, in a vertical grow bag, South Wales) and I am VERY impressed that you take the time/bother to answer viewers questions (so many UA-camrs do not!). It's interesting that the topic I was searching for (whether or not to remove blossoms in the first year) has varying advice...some growers say 'yes', some say (as you do) 'no'. I don't really want to 'waste' my plants this year, so I'm going to follow your advice and keep my fingers (and toes) crossed!
Hi Trish. Good luck with your strawberries. I think there's no harm in letting them fruit in their first year if they're good, strong plants - particularly as they only really crop well for three to four seasons.
@@GrowVeg Thank you!
hello from Australia
G'day mate! (Sorry, very poor British attempt at Aussie accent!). Nice to have you watching anyhow. :-)
Thank you blessings
Another fantastic video thank you 👏
So encouraging. Thank you.

Hi ben. I found your channel a week ago and i am just amazed. Great Videos! Short, high in information and you are just a very nice dude
Thanks so much - very kind of you to say. And cheers very much for watching! :-)
Good reminder on multiple types and ripening times. Crucial goal for most produce other than nuts, garlic, shallots...easy LT storage stuff.
Just planted my first ever strawberries, I have 6 different varieties. Will definitely put some netting over, great tip. Love your channel ... you make me smile 😊
Thank you!
Fantastic, hopefully you'll have lots of strawberries for several months.

Great video, thank you so much for this! I'll be planting a strawberry raised bed this summer for the first time so I really appreciate this informative guide! I'll be growing albion strawberries from roots.
Enjoy your new strawberry bed Melissa. :-)
Great video Ben thank you so much for sharing this information, as a newbie gardener I found it really helpful👍
Thanks Janet, so pleased you found it useful. :-)

Hello Ben!🤗 Thanks for sharing your great strawberry tips! 👏 I am growing Ozark and Tri-Star bare root strawberries for the first time and your tips have been very useful! 🍓🍓 I am growing them in 3 pot stackable containers; 3 to 4 containers high on a wooden pallet! 🦋5/26/2021🦋
Sounds like a superb setup Barb!
Thank you!
Great video. I just bought strawberries and I’m ready to plant. Thank you!
Thanks for your video. Love to grow strawberries
Love your channel & great wealth of knowledge. I plan to get a large container for my 🍓 . They have grown in the same place going on 4 seasons & I know we need to plant new plants. My old area I’ll grow a cover crop for now. Again thank you! 😃🌺
Good luck with your new plants. :-)
Looks cold out there friend. Thanks for the good notes on Strawberries, I'll be planting some this weekend!
Love growing strawberries and gooseberry cherries and plums looking forward to raising. Peach and Apricot trees
Excellent video very informative ....thank you..
Thanks so much Sir!
I've got some store bought strawberries and plucked out the seeds to germinate them, 4 weeks past and I'll be planting them today
Wow - that's very impressive - good job!
I love strawberries... this video is very helpful
Thank you, very good information delivered in a cherry way!
Hi from Malaysia 👋😁we have highland and lowland strawberry, both fruiting all year round.
Oh wow - that sounds lovely!
I like that strawberry tower 3:46! Will have to give that a go.
Wow beautiful strawberry garden i love strawberry. 🍓
Lovely efforts thanks
Good job man😊
Cheers matey! :-)
Interesting point about the 50cm spacing. I feel like my ones may be too close, with humidity possibly causing the stunting of the growth of some small berries, which seem to then rot. When I planted them last year it was too late for berries, but I did get lots of runners, though it appears I didn't spread those out enough. It looked all fine until the rapid foliage growth this spring. We'll see how the ripening process goes in the next few weeks.
Thanks again for the video Ben. I'm keeping my fingers crossed I see you collaborate with Charles Dowding one day :)
I'm a big fan of the great Charles too. Good luck with your strawberries. :-)
@@GrowVegi would love to see the same you & Charles together ❤
EXCELLENT video - thank you!
Many thanks, I enjoy your videos and always learn something. I just grow one variety of strawberry, Elsanta, which I find are very productive, tasty and trouble free in the polytunnel. After seeing this video I will experiment with perpetual fruiting varieties as well.
Great Video (as usual)! Thanks!
First watch this morning... thanks Ben 👊🏿💯🇬🇧
Cheers for watching! :-)
I actually took the runners to propagate the first year so that my second year has 6-7 times as many plants to produce fruit. I bought 6 plants and now I have 42 plants, if they all made it through the winter. I was able to enjoy a few strawberries last year, but this year I will have a bumper crop, with plenty to share with friends and family.
That's great - your foresight should definitely pay off!
Can you explain this comment? It sounds genius but I don't know what runners are or what propagating is or how 6 plants became 42? I'd love to try. My strawberries are little baby seedlings right now. Just sprouted a week or so ago
Ohhh wait he just showed cutting runners. I assume propagating is putting them in water??? So roots grow??
@@IttyBitty412leave the runners on the plant whilst putting the baby plant (at the other end of the runner from the main plant ) into some soil, either in the ground or a pot, depending on where you are growing your strawberries. Use something like a small stone or a piece of bent wire to hold the baby strawberry plant down . After a couple of weeks the baby plant will have grown some roots and you can detach it from the parent plant. Hope this is of help.
Amazing work 👏 🙌 👌
Nice video. There is nothing better than a fresh picked ripen strawberry!
My strawberries never make it inside. I let my kids and their friends harvest them.
Excellent video as always!
Thanks for sharing!.
❤🙏
That's the sign of truly delicious strawberries - they never make it inside!
Just discovered your channel. What a gem!

Amazing tutorial 👍

informative.. 😊
That's great to hear Adam. Thanks for the feedback. :-)
I’m gonna try with this tutorial!! Thank you for sharing this interesting video 👏🏽
Great stuff, and you're very welcome. :-)
Just planted 25 bare root ozarks in a plot. Last year 1 alpine grew (survived) out of a whole pack of seeds and 3 June bearing bare roots in pots. The few baby alpines I picked last year were delicious, hoping to get lots this year.
Fingers crossed for you Caren.
I've got wild strawberries all over my yard but I never get to them before the birds. This year I'm going for seeds in planters with a net. Thank you for the info!!! 🤗
I heard that you can place the painted strawberry looking rocks by the strawberry plants and the birds won't eat them. Hope it works!
Your birds are eating well! I hope you manage to pick a few strawberries this year.
I just found this channel, and love it!
Really pleased to hear that - welcome to the channel! :-)
Nice video! I just planted 50 strawberry roots in a tower garden. My first time trying to grow them. So excited!
How did it go?!
Great stuff.
Thanks for your great videos
Nice presentation.
We really enjoyed watching the video and we are excited to grow our own strawberries this year
Wonderful. I hope you get a delicious harvest from them. :-)
i love strawberries...
🍓 A few years ago I lost about 40 of my strawberry plants to the dreaded vine weevil grub! I was devastated. I’m building them up year by year again with the runners. Nematodes were the perfect solution to eliminate the grubs. Thanks for a fab video.👍
They are a nuisance! I've had issues with vine weevil grubs also. It's their underhand method of destruction that gets me!
Wow you are pro 😅
@@masimuseebatvlogs I’m assuming you mean Ben 😁 I’ve been gardening for about 40 years but I still class myself as an amateur as there’s always new stuff to learn. 👍👍
@@66REDD66 it's very good. That you never stop learning 🥰 stay blessed 🥰
Doing strawberries for the first time this year in the garden. I have two raised beds filled with Mel's Mix from SFG and I planted 52 plants between them. I bought some netting, but the holes seemed too small to let in pollinators (1/6''), so I got a different product that has 5/8'' holes.
My varieties are:
Sequoia: Springbearer
Ozark Beauty: Everbearer
Fort Laramie-Ever
Thanks for the video, looking forward to harvest!
I think you made a smart move swopping out the netting for wider gauge holes. Good luck with the crop - some lovely varieties there.
Sequoia strawberries will be everbearing if you are in a mild climate.
Thats why i love strawberry 🍓
Love your glasses. and your videos, cheers
Every time I hear your voice I think of the Great British Baking Show
Great video! Love your channel! God bless you my friend!
And you Christian, many thanks.
Thank you for your video, any information on growing strawberries is very helpful. I just ordered my strawberries I will be planting them in a raised bed. I am growing early glow which is an early season and Cavendish which is an early to mid season and the third one is a late to mid season called Jewel. I am very excited to have strawberries this year!
That's a great spread of varieties - you'll be picking for weeks! :-)
Great video, Thank you.

Lovely stuff Katriona!
I love strawberries because I usually buy a hanging pot that have about 5 plants from my gardening store and after two pots and one year later I have now about 25 plants after dividing. I do employ strawberry painted rocks to fend off birds.
It's the plant that keeps on giving!
Nice interesting video thank you
ok i will try ok
