There's no evidence anywhere suggesting removing flowers in the first season increases yield in following seasons. Has anyone found any definitive evidence?

Removal of flowers caused increased vegetative growth in both years and increased yield during the second year. It is suggested that the source/sink relationship of young strawberry A+ frigo plants is affected significantly by the presence or absence of flowers during the first year of growth.

I prefer to plant I ground or growing beds as well. In this particular video when filmed my ground was distill a little frozen so it was necessary to find a stop gap until warm enough.

I bought 10 sequoia strawberry roots that had damp soil around them, i soaked them in water, but not one of them has a single green leaf on it before planting..i just planted today..if the crown is all brown, does that mean the plants were dead when i bought them? Im not sure im worried now because everyone i see online their strawberries have green Leaves!
Did they ever grow? I just planted some bare roots that were also brown at the crown
I will say that we stored bare root strawberries in the fridge because we were headed out of town for a week. Unfortunately, the fridge got down to freezing while we were gone & we lost them all. I think them waking up with warmth is better than risk of freezing, myself.

I got mine and didn’t have a place for them ready yet. I forgot about them on the counter in the original bag for 3 days and then opened them and put them in the fridge in that original bag. There was no newspaper or moisture in the bag at all. I didn’t know there was supposed to be.
About 5 days after I got them, I planted them straight into their spots. Without soaking or washing them, without any fungicide.
The next morning the little stems on them changed from pale color/white color to reddish purple color and looked stronger already after just one night in the dirt.
I’m a bit worried now 😅 but hoping since they perked up that some of them will survive.
Also it was hard for me to get them planted right at the crown, some have a bit of root showing up top. I’m not sure if I should add more soil or compost, because I worry about it covering the crowns 🫣
Thanks for that overview. I have one question. What is the ideal location to plant the strawberries in the garden.
I live in Florida. My strawberries started off fine in a shaded area of the garden. But the iguanas discovered them and devoured a few leaves. I covered the towers with a net and moved them to an area where it was sunnier. I watered them every other day. I then noted the leaves died off from the crowns. I only have one left with leaves. This was on the top level of the tower.
What do you think is the cause of them dying and what do you suggest is the solution? Thanks for your help.
Saying what the leaves died off is like saying I have a cough and a sore throat what do I have.
Leaves falling could be to little water, to much water, not enough fertilizer, to much fertilizer, heat stress and so leaves are dying back, herbicide damage, being in florida it could be to humid and so there is fungal pressure, insect damage, damage from other animals, strawberry planted to deep, strawberry planted to shallow, ect.
The honest answer is I dont know. It could be a combination of many things. combined. Strawberries like moist but well drained soil, occasionally drying out to prevent root rot. Full sun but consistent temperatures 70-90 degrees. above that they tend to melt away to heat stress. The higher the heat the more filtered sunlight they can handle.
Being in a subtropics environment it adds to more potential stress of root rot, steel rot, powdery mildew or any number of many fungus more present in a high humidity environment
The new placement of strawberries, is it near masonry that soaks up heat all day long? then at night releases the heats causing further stress on the plants. Never allowing it to cool down and night also under heat stress?
these are just a few things I can think of. The best case scenario is look at each potential culprit and address them one at a time to see if it could or could not be the cause.
I have 25 strawberry plants each in 2 gal grow bags on a drip system. What is the ideal drip size for watering each week?

Very informative video! Question: I’m guessing that the fungicide solution is diluted. How many tbs/gallon of water do you use?
It fully depends on the individual fungicide that you use. This particular fungicige is at a rate of 3 tablespoons per 1 gallon.
Others are at a rate of 4 tablespoons per gallon. This would translate to a rate of 1 oz per gallon. It depends on the individual fungicide and dilution rates will be listed on the side of the bottle.

Yes. They can be grown year round in a greenhouse. The prolblem your going to run into. Strawberries require a cold period of time in order for them to set fruit. This is know as chilling period of time.
What commercial greenhouse growers will do is one of two things. Once the strawberries ate done setting fruit they will then collect the strawberry plants and put them in a refrigerator or cold storage for 6 to 8 weeks. Then replant them and start all over.

Ok, you mentioned that you can get the roots out of dormancy by soaking in water up to a couple of hours. If you DON'T soak them and put them immediately in the ground, pots or whatever you plant them in, does that kill them?
No it does not. It will just take them a little longer to come out of winter hibernation.
By soaking them that just helps to speed up the process.
Make certain they do get regular watering though as they will be thirsty boys.
I have never planted strawberries before,now this year I have ordered twice of the bare roots sets of 12,but the first time I planted they died and I went and ordered for the second time they died again,I really don’t know what is going wrong, I tried to order them from different places but still no lucky,what soil do you use
Saying why they died is unfortunately not going to be helpful. It is attune to saying I have a cough and a runny nose what do I have.
Whey the strawberries died could be to much water, to little water, poor soil not enough drainage to little drainage, diseases, bugs, weather ect. ect.
Typically speaking strawberries like a moist well draining soil with a high organic matter. I personably like a nice sandy loam soil sub striate. I have high clay in some of my soils so I have built raised garden beds to get around my heavy clay soils.
Strawberries like full sun to partial shade. with temps between 40-80 degrees activily growing in 60-80 degrees. They can handle freezing temps but need mulch to help protect or can be killed of by extremes cold temps. ie -5, -10. Many strawberries can be very susceptible to diseased like veritaserum wilt and powdery mildew. You will want to find a disease resistant type that grows well in your climate.
If you live in the us and good source to find further into on is your local ag grant school. Every State within the united states has what is called an ag grant school. They work closely with the USDA and part of their mission is to help educate the public and agricultural practices.
Without more detailed info to your particular situation this is the best I can recommend without know more specifics to your individual situation.
For ex
Time frame on planting bare root strawberries. Earliest or best time to plant.
You can honestly plant any time. Best time to plant depends on variety of strawberry, climate. ,and when you want fruit.
So assumptions im going to make. You live in an area with 4 distinct seasons meaning a spring, summer, fall, and winter that can get down to freezing temperatures that are required for strawberries needed to fruit.
If you live in an area that has warmer climate ie tropics then you would put strawberries in cold storage or treat as an annual.
June bearing strawberries: best to plant in fall allow to establish and will get fruit next late spring. If you plant in spring it is possible it will not fruit until next spring.
Everbearing: best to plant in fall will get fruit next spring. If you plant in spring likely will not get fruit until fall. will get fruit 2x per year.
Day neutral: same as everbearing. exception, if temperatures in your area stay moderate, ie below 85-90 degrees Fahrenheit you should continue to receive fruit throughout the year,

I have a question I am growing bare-root strawberries I'm going on vacation in September can I place my strawberries in a terrarium ? How will this work ? And how to water them ?

@john humphrey I personally have never tried putting strawberries in a terrarium. In most terrariums I've seen they have small plants or mosses.
Id say go for it see how works if it doesn't then we learned something new.
If it's a small amount of time you are leaving and just need to water. Then I'd say take an empty gallon or 2 litre soda bottle and poke a fee small holes in the lid. Fill with water and flip upside down. Water will slowly trickle out and give your strawberry plant a week or two of water slowly woth your own diy drip irrigation system.
Damn mine did not look like this at all... they were much darker I wonder if they were no good.
Different species of strawberries will have slightly different colors. Also different types of soil, minerals, and nutrients that the strawberries are grown in can also slightly effect the color as well.

@GettingBentWithBo on average up to 6 weeks if conditions are right.. Many factors will contribute to the length of time. Temperature, moisture level, nutrient level ect.
For example strawberries don't start to warm up until day time temperatures start to hit the 50s or so. Different factors and cerry greatly on speed of growth

Where do you get your roots from?
These are a few locations I personally have found there to be good places to buy bare root strawberries. They are in no particular order all are good quality place and will equally do well. I personally go with Nourse Farms first but have enjoyed good service from all of these this year and in the past as well.

I planted 12. Only two has leaves after 2 months.
There are 2 major conditions which would cause this.
1st there bad/dud and and that can happen. Less likely though unless suffering from major diseases and fungal issues.
2nd and more likely they do not have ideal conditions to break dormancy and start growing. Wheather is is temperature, moisture, ect.
For example my strawberries for the season are just barely starting to break dormancy. However living the rhe high rocky mountains up until about 2 weeks ago I had massive abouts of snow at times several feet covering them.
Without further info I would only be guessing. Is there mote info you could provide that I might be able to help better diagnose?
Frost protection is not necessary. They are very cold hardy, some are hardy down to a zone 3.
Whether you need frost protection or not I would argue depends on variety. Some varieties need protection and some dont. That is why it is important to get the varieties that do better in your climate.
Got all my bare root strawberries... got them in a pot, with holes... and watched them slowly die. I am so done with strawberries. All 50 died. Boggles the mind. Followed seller's recommendation to the letter.

Looks to me that the planting container is too small for the root system of the plants.
as mentioned in the video these are only temporary holding containers for demonstration purposes before the grow boxes are ready to plant in.

I bought it form walmart.. i believe they died because i didn't know how to handle them.
I myself worked for Walmart for a period of time. I have found just like any job there are some people that are knowledgeable and put heart and sole into the work, and there are others who are just there for a paycheck.
High volume low price point is where Walmart has chosen to focus on that. With that business model you can also sometimes get lower quality as well unfortunately.
