I am a first year gardener this year...I've been teaching myself gardening, canning, freeze-drying, dehydrating...basically, overall self-reliance this past 5 years. I follow a lot of canning/gardening/homestead channels and I enjoy them all...but for real, when it comes to teaching...you are second to none! Thank you so much for sharing your skills with us. Your approach to teaching, breaking down the how's and why's is just wonderful. I never leave your videos with questions because you thoroughly cover everything. And for those of us without a lot of extra time to spend in front of a screen, you are as straight to the point as possible. Seriously, second to none. ~Kelly
That's so amazing of you to say, thank you! I love that you recognize the "straight to the point" approach because its something I'm really striving for Kelly. I get the entertainment value of a lot of other channels, and more power to them. I just want to pass on what knowledge I've accrued without all that other stuff. I won't get as many views because of it, but if I can create a library full of everything I've learned and will learn, that means a lot more in my opinion. Cheers! 🙂
Good for you, teaching yourself these skills! I have done the same thing for quite awhile now. Another awesome gardening channel in Roots and Refuge - Jess is amazing, encouraging, and her smile is infectious. 😀
Another good way to propagate strawberry get a kiddie pool around 36 -48"inch make some 1/4" drain holes then locate a sunny spot fill with soil and make a mound in the middle plant 3-4 plants and watch tons of runners and will root on their own you can separate and plant as needed ✌️😁 Just helping not trying to be anything else! Im actually going to attempt to grow strawberries in my closet in my big octopot self watering system under a strong full specrum grow light. I cant find anyone who has attempted strawberries this way even those who suggest not to grow inside haven’t even attempted it, so I’m gonna go for it being that it gets so much hotter each year then the last that all my outdoor plants tend to burn up before they can really do anything , and also because at this house and the house I lived in before I had started off the growing season, growing my own veggies, tomatoes , melons and such, only for them to get destroyed after all my work by insects like aphids or other crop my homework, killing insects. I figured the best way to avoid those pesty insects ruining all my hard work anymore is by growing my plants inside where they’re safe!

I totally agree! We have not had rain here in Florida, since December 2022, and 3 days ago, the skies opened up and we got 2.5 inches in 1 hour. Believe it or not, that much rain on sand, is not good. Dry sand is quite oily? Weird right? I think about 5-7 of my Strawbabies drowned. Maybe not, but they sure look dead to me. Anything I can do?
You provide the best information. I purchased 80 bare root starters. A combination of ever bearing and June bearing. After watching a previous video on strawberries you provided…I took the plunge. Guess what I’ve had fresh strawberries every day this week. I’m so excited. Now if I could be successful with my tomato starts… not giving up. Thank you so much.
I grow alpine and musk strawberries from seed quite often. They are an exception to your hybrid rule. They also can bear fruit the first year of you start them mid January the plants will be healthy enough by spring to produce before. My hawaii white strawberries were actually producing fruit in the pots I started them in. I will however note, unless you just want to claim you grow strange strawberries, just buy your plants. It's far less painful.
I buy organic strawberries from the market. Any strawberries that become soft before eating, I throw in a pot. That is how I started my strawberry crop and have shared with others. I do not know what variety they are but have been successful with this method for years.

I would suggest that applying a top dressing of good, finished compost would take the place of bought concentrated NPK. just move the mulch aside, add a half inch of compost, water and replace the mulch. Pine needles hold up well as a strawberry mulch if you have them nearby. Thanks for all the valuable tips.
@R.A.W.R.NEWS.T.V.2 Pine needles work for strawberries. The PH probably isn't that important in this case as the pine needles are processed by animalcule before they get to the strawberry's roots.
@R.A.W.R.NEWS.T.V.2 I’m not sure if it’s the same for different parts of the country but I bought one everbearing strawberry plant last year and let it shoot out and set new roots, just one plant, and it has spread like crazy. If they are suitable for your area you could buy one plant and let it shoot out. Well worth what I paid for it. I also have put the transplants into a plastic swimming pool and several were in pots which took our rare 17 degrees one night and three days solid of twenties to 32 degrees without covering and they are now producing berries like crazy.
Great info! We are planting strawberries for the first time this spring, we have them on order and should be here the 1st week of April. Thank you for the video!!
I grew some from seed to get the double pink bloosom kind. I started them in December in my cool winter greenhouse and they actually fruited that summer. So if you have a cool winter greenhouse this can be a great way to grow strawberries.
Thanks again. This is the first time I've grown strawberries. Your videos have inspired me, so I will try to do all I've learnt from you. Hope your weather is good. Here in South East UK it's weather for ducks as they say. Take care, Maggie
Excellent video. Enjoy the humble way you explain your methods with a mellow demeanor. Some inform with a ego attached; The Tube got to their heads... Appreciate you sharing your expertise.
I love watching your videos. Can't really get enough of the. The strawberry ones are the ones I'm interested in the most right now, as I will be planting bear rooted ones in the spring. Should I use berry tone in the hole when planting the ones when I receive them this spring. I should mention I live in zone 6 A. I'm getting along in years, so I don't want to waste time or money. Thank you so very much my friend. Rev. Ray Jones
Thanks so much for the support, super appreciated! Just make sure you have good, organic rich, loose soil. No crazy additives needed... Strawberry plants are quite vigorous! Let us know how it goes!
Thank You for this very informative video! I am a new gardener, and have procrastinated too long. Now I will have to exercise patience, while waiting for that first crop. 🍓 I'm in 7b, W. TN.
I grow strawberries too in pots. Everytime I collect Banana peels. Soak the banana peels in water overnight and use it as a fertiliser on strawberries. You will get the biggest strawberry fruits 👍🍓🍓🍓🍓
Goats ate my last strawberry plants. Take two this year, so here I am. I don`t want to mess up. Zone 8b/9a line in Louisiana. I have very dark and loose forest leaf mold soil with some sandy areas nearby I can collect to use. Maybe a mix of 20% Miracle Gro soil with this will help. I have bare roots I just got transplanted into every possible empty space in pots until it warms some and the potting soil arrives. They were growing tops when I got them so I keep them indoors because we`re getting a cold front.
I had a lot of fun watching this video! Thanks! All the informations needed in a simple relaxing video... Bravo! Just one thing... i never had any trouble germinating strawberry seeds without stratification... I tried the paper towel in a dish methode, i tried to put them directly in small pots... all went great... Also tried putting seeds directly into soil before first frosts and they sprouted the next spring. Strawberries are as easy to grow as weed... BUT they need some attention to give nice abondant fruits... Wich you did explain in pefection! Good luck! :)
I love strawberries. When I moved to St. Louis, MO, I noticed strawberry plants everywhere! It's as if the local parks were once a strawberry farm. I love to eat them every morning on my bagels. I'll try to grow and see what happens.
This is a GREAT video content and so good instructionally. I'm in my 3rd year of my raised bed patch. Last year I wasn't able to keep up with the runners since now bed is overgrown. What is the best way to "thin" it out? Would love a video on this. No one ever seems to have videos discussing/teaching this problem. Thank you
Hey Marto, thanks for watching! Yes, overcrowded beds are common with strawberries, no question. You can either manually thin by taking out the smaller plants, or redo the whole bed. If it's just one year of growth, I'd just spot clean it up and not miss a season!
Thanks so much! Definitely get that one a lot. The straw I use is from a local feed store. Nationally, I don't see it really offered, so you have to check local feed barns or plant nurseries....
A good video. I have been growing strawberries for over 10 years, and I learned something in this one. 2 things a second video should cover (you may have already covered these in another video), are frost kill of the early blooms, and what to do about birds, squirrels, and slugs eating the fruit. Thanks.
I'm so happy to find you! My home was built 40yrs+ ago, and I purchased it a year ago. I've noticed strawberry plants growing in my yard. Would it be okay to "transplant" them into pots? I don't want to accidentally mow over them. I hired someone last year to mow the backyard since it had become overgrown. You don't live that far away from me, but I would need to take a boat or ferry, hahaha Thank you in advance :)
Novice here but I can add some interesting trivia, if you call it that. As for winter growing, I have to doubt that. Here in the Toronto area the early (i.e 1800's) European settlers (probably mainly British) would grow them in cold frames and use horse manure as both low level heat source (as the manure decomposed) and also fertilizer. They has fresh fruit during the winter long before air transport ! Myself as an urban home owner I don't have (and couldn't keep as per municipal bylaws) a horse. But I do vermicomposting. Being both appreciative of the hard work those little creatures do (and a wee bit cheap) I make use of every little bit. The small amount of the worm castings that sticks to the rubber gloves when I push aside the bedding to feed the worms my veggie and fruit scraps, gets rinsed off into a bucket. I water my house plants with it 4+ times week. It's not an intense fertilizer but worm castings are one of the best fertilizers you can possibly use. My plants LOVE IT !!! Green as can be. The African violets and Christmas cacti bloom like crazy. How could using this worm casting solution as part of your regular watering regimen not be good for strawberries ?
From 11pm est to 2AM I've been researching growing strawberries Hehe! I was like "where do you get them from!?" Then I realized that you uploaded this video; thank you for all of the information you share and with patience and clarity! I was confused about how to start growing a strawberry plant if you can't take cuttings or seeds from a plant 😩 Then I was confused about buying a plant starter which seemed pricey...But I see it is worth it; especially with how you can divide the plant up, and get new cuttings(?I believe it's called) once its finished it's life cycle. Time to rest my brain 🧠
Yes, yes, and yes! Starter plants can be expensive (although cheaper as we get closer to summer), but it'll be $3 to $4 that you'll only spend ONCE. The plant will send out runners, which will make more plants and then in a couple of years it'll be divisible and itself turn into 6 or 8 new plants. It may take a season, but just one strawberry plant should in fact give you enough daughter plants to never have to buy a strawberry plant again! 🙂
I currently grow 4 our of all 5 wild strawberry species that exist in the PNW. and I have found that (while nothing compared to a tree or a tomato) strawberry roots can actually get quite long. (easily over 1 foot in length). also, beach strawberries I have noticed are quite stronger at living in wet conditions. a smaller but wider pot I have with three sitting in it currently have a large network of roots in the underpan that is filled with water 24/7 due to all the rain its been receiving. and despite its not being as adaptable to cold weather, it still has thrived compared to modern garden hybrids. (all of my wild ones have greater resistance to cold weather and have been pushing flowers despite the cold frosty nights and have sustained no/minimal damage compared to my larger hybrids!
Thank you SO MUCH !!! Just got some plants from an Organic grower & now I KNOW how to plant them properly. Will have to wait until the wind dies down - we are in SW Arizona 9b zone & the Southwest wind has been brutal (I don't even want to be out there). For the intense heat & beating Sun we get in the Summer months I probably need to put up some light shade screen to protect them a bit. Correct? Judi
Great idea to use a mesh bottom tray as a compost sifter! I already have several of those trays so now I can eliminate “build compost sifter” from my to do list. Now I just need to be patient as I wait for my compost tumbler to do its thing. Even though I’ve grown strawberries for several years, I learned a lot of new information. Thanks!
Awesome Jesse, happy to hear! I'm in Victoria, BC. Strawberries need a few days off hard frost leading into winter, then get covered with a thick mulch for protection until spring.

I've got plants on the way that should arrive, hopefully early next week! That 'S' on your cap is for STRAWBERRIES!
Right on Kevin! Let us know how it goes!! 🙂
I love the abundant information you’re giving out great teaching. 🙏
Thanks, appreciate the kind words!
Nothing beats good compost Ken.... Nothing! :-)
I had the same reaction when the NPK came out. That was the only time I questioned, though.
That side note was very informative and very good advice!!! Nothing beats compost and worm castings!!!
Very nice tutorial I enjoyed your video on how to grow strawberries.
Thanks so much.
Cheers Monica, thanks for that and thanks for watching. :-)
This was amazing…I just planted last week. This was right on time. Thank you
Perfect timing!! 🙂
Phenomenal video! Thank you for being succinct yet thorough.
I love all of your "Definitive Guide " Videos Plus the ones for beginners "Which I am" Thank U they've really helped me.
Thanks Margo! Appreciate the support!
Strawberries remind me of late winter since I live in fl, they are best in febuary
Yeah, they definitely struggle with that southern heat!
Thank you so much for all the details you put into this video. So helpful!
Hey Amber, thanks for the kind words and for watching! :-)
It is alot of information but i appreciate the step process and facts. As a beginner i cant wait grow my 1st strawberry plant
Perfect information and your hands on experience makes a difference thx for taking the time to share .
Thanks Donnie, and thanks for watching!
Great Video. Starting my first Strawberry crop this year.
Thanks, best of luck Will!
Very helpful, and the comments are also appreciated. Thank you.✌🍓🍓🍓
Cheers Kevin, thanks for watching! :-)
Am going to start planting strawberries in springtime in the UK! Fingers crossed. Not sure what to expect tbh - first time planting for me!
Best of luck! Keep us posted on your success!
Very clear and comprehensive video. Thank you.
Thanks Keith, kind of you to say! :-)
Very nice guidelines. Thanks.
Cheers, thanks for watching!
Invaluable information.
Thank you very much from a beginner!
Thanks Sandra!
Thank You for this very informative video! I am a new gardener, and have procrastinated too long. Now I will have to exercise patience, while waiting for that first crop. 🍓 I'm in 7b, W. TN.
Cheers Trish, thanks for watching!
Hi New Viewer here Such a Wonderful Vid. One of the best i have seen.
Thanks, appreciate that! :-)
Excellent episode, thank you 😊
Cheers!
Excellent vid man .everything a person needs to know .
Hey thanks, appreciate it! 🙂
At 6:15 I tried doing that, cutting the runners ones it has root nodules and placing them in water or soil but they always die
Hey Kemple, sorry to hear that. Try leaving them on the plant just a little bit longer. That sometimes helps.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms they usually do, doesn't really matter because the honeoye variety produces so many runners
@@kemplelabis6188 Yeah, my Berries Galore I've been growing for about 4 seasons now is VERY stingy on the runners!
Thanks so much for this information, looking forward to my first crop this summer
thank you so much i have struggled BAD - now i see what i did wrong
Best of luck turning it around this season!
Your beloved strawberry plant looked so gorgeous! I hope I will grow mine like yours soon learning from you! ThankYou!
this is great information, very helpful and you are a really good teacher!
Thanks, appreciate that! :-)
Good luck! :)
Thanks Jo! Definitely a tricky crop to do from seed. No question. :-)
I love strawberries. When I moved to St. Louis, MO, I noticed strawberry plants everywhere! It's as if the local parks were once a strawberry farm. I love to eat them every morning on my bagels. I'll try to grow and see what happens.
Ha ha yessssss! Must be a perfect climate for them! Lucky too for you! :-)
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms wow, thank you for the quick response. 👍
@@marto4275 no problem Marto!
Thank y'all. Blessings, julie
Thanks Julie!
You are a wonderful teacher…!
Thank you!
Thanks so much! :-)
Thank you for your great information learned a lot plan yo grow them
Cheers, thanks so much for watching! 🙂

So much information. Thank you so kind of you to share.
Hey, thanks to as well for watching!
I've got two packages of ten Qiunalt bare root and not sure how to start them so this is great. Thanks Jeff!
9:32 you made a lot of people happy
Excellent video. Comprehensive and clear. One question - Where to find that straw mulch?
Forgot to mention the reason as to why I mentioned the age of the home. It used to be a strawberry field. Progress! 🤨🤨🤨
Do they need to be pollinated by bees? I like to screen in beds with netting to keep bad bugs off
Strawberries can self pollinate.....but insects are always better.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms awesome info in a quick comment! 🍓
@@missouriplantmom1769 :-)
Do you use bio char? Do you recommend it, and if so, what proportion to potting soil?
Thank you so much for your prompt reply!
Cheers Suzana! :-)
The wild (woodland) ones are truly awesome....I wish more people worked with them!
Correct? Judi
Loved this. Funny tho as I have never been successful at strawberry growing.😆
This could be your year then!
Thanks!
Thanks Molly! Wishing you lots of Strawberry success this summer!
Dude your videos have been a ton of help. Thank you!!! Are you in Canada?what do I do once summer is over?
Awesome Jesse, happy to hear! I'm in Victoria, BC. Strawberries need a few days off hard frost leading into winter, then get covered with a thick mulch for protection until spring.
I've learned sooo much! Thanks!!
Cheers, happy to help!
Great video. Thanks for all the information. Now I just need to know how to deal with strawberry pests.
Oh no Jody, what pests are you getting on yours?
