    Regarding birds, I stumbled upon this by accident, but it reduced 90% of bird-eaten fruit:
    Provide clean water within 20 feet. I discovered that the birds were going after the berries for their water content during dry spells. I left a trash can lid with water close by, and magically the fruit were left alone. It wasn't 100% safe like a net, but darn near for zero cost.

    I use red painted rocks in my strawberry patch to great success. I painted a whole bag of river rock, 355 rocks in a 14 foot by 18 foot bed and the birds and squirrels are both put off! I also keep a large mint plant in there and that keeps the squirrels and rats at bay. Right now I am reorganizing things and the rocks and mint plants are displaced. The squirrels are getting in there now. I need to finish so I can get everything back in place! I have actually seen both squirrels and birds disappointed by a red rock in the strawberry patch. 🍓

    My parents and I grew raspberries last year, and I had heard about painting rocks. It really works! Do it a month before fruit even begins to show. We had squirrels and racoons, and birds chip at the rocks. We started with 9 small red rocks, and by the end of summer there was only two left on our deck, but we enjoyed all our raspberries. If you're growing in raised beds, maybe have an elevated place where you can place the rocks where animals can see it. If not, again, place the rocks VERY early BEFORE the fruits even start. Our only issue were Japanese beetles which ate the leaves, but left our fruit alone. Cheers from /Canada

      Do you have any suggestions for red flowers companion for strawberry’s, to help protect from bugs etc, wife loves red flowers.?

    • @TheNordicfrost
      @TheNordicfrost 2 місяці тому

      @@dadsrs6019 strawberries don’t really need companion plantings. They grow and spread out fast and they’ll probably smother anything else you plant in a bed. That being said, there are beer traps and whatnot to help if you have slug/earwig issues. If you do decide to plant flowers in the bed, I’d recommend something that grows taller than them. Your local nursery will probably have lots of options and suggestions for that. Nasturtiums tend to crawl around like strawberries. If you give them time to grow a bit first, it might look good intermixed. If you’re planting flowers in a separate bed, the world is your oyster. From tulips, to roses, to perennial wildflowers. Just go online and pick seeds, or to your nursery and pick whatever you think looks, and smell nice.

      Our Lord Jesus Christ is coming soon.
      Matthew 24:7-14
      7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
      8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
      9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.
      10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
      11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
      12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
      13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
      14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

    I set out beer traps one year and caught several slugs every night. But when I went out after dark with a flashlight, I found hundreds of slugs (really, hundreds) feeding on the garden plants. I hand removed over a hundred a night for several nights in a row, and realized that the beer traps weren't making any difference at all.

My pest number one is the slug, really hard to control in wet Northern Irish climate. Great video btw.

    Yes! I planted about 30 baskets 2 yrs ago and here in Oregon they usually produce in mid June. It's mid April and I have berries which in about 3-4 weeks will be ripe. They end around November. No birds, no bugs, and no rotten from sitting on wet ground.

    I was a commercial grower and was growing strawberries through black mulch plastic since 88 and my yields tripled so have done that way ever since even now that I only grow for myself I still do it.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  2 місяці тому

      Interesting to hear this. I guess the extra warmth from the light absorption by the black plastic must make a big difference to growth.

      @@GrowVeg I did an experiment. Had a triple row on plastic and a triple row just i the soil and I couldn't believe the huge difference. Not only heating the soil but suppressing the weeds and retaining more moisture, works just as well on currants as well 10lbs blackcurrants per bush is a fair yield in my book.

    My grandkids and I painted some rocks bright red (maybe a bit larger than a normal strawberry would be) and decorated them with little black spots like seeds. For two seasons, I have had them in my strawberry patch. Before we added them, I think we had quite a bit of birds helping themselves, but I didn’t notice many damaged strawberries last year. Personally, I feel like it works, but I’m going to add netting just in case this next year since I have brand new plants that have established over winter and I hope to get a nice sized harvest. We also have nice sized bird feeders on the far side of the property, so we are trying to train the wild birds that that’s where we want them to eat. 😂

    Love the red-rocks tip. I'll give it a try. I've had good luck growing them under pine trees. They like acidic soil and the pine-needle "mulch" keeps the berries off the ground. It solved my slug problem. I've moved and no longer have pine trees, but they're around the area. I doubt anyone will mind if I steal some needles from a park for mulch.

    If you plant runners they will give not so much fruit the first year but the 2 en 3th year they will but normally you only buy strawberries ones after that the runners wil do the work year after year
    Btw garlic loves raspberries 2 you can also take a big waterpipe put holes in it with a rond drilling bit and fill them up with strawberries or if you don.t have much space vertical or horizontally
    Same apply s 2 herbs like parsley, chives, oregano and on top thym or dragon and put it straight up like a pole
    You can also put strawberries in a draining pipe and hang it vertical
    Did lots off it when I had a rooft erras
    Enjoy your garden ben

    I grew strawberries from seed last year and they did amazingly - and got lots of fruit as well in the same year. I've never really been a fan of strawberries, but I actually found the ones I grew absolutely delicious - they were a variety aptly named 'Delician' - really recommend giving them a go if you haven't tried them. I've also just ordered some bareroot Strawberry Anablanca 'Snow White' to have a try with - so thanks for the advice regarding planting bareroot. They look very interesting and I'm always tempted by anything that includes pineapple in the flavour profile haha!

    I worked for many years in strawberry fields when I was young.
    Worked for a few farmer with different methods.
    One had results far and beyond the others. His trick?
    It's a field, so imagine the rows (and rows) of strawberry. It would grow larger during the summer, reaching 12-18 inches (30-45 cm).
    When fall came, we were going back in the field with the tractor to bring back the row to 8 inches. Not just mowing (you already mow the plants before you put the straw on for winter, everyone does that, at least here with winter), you turn the ground with rotating blades.
    That HARD RESET of the plant every year makes a huge difference. It leaves a lot of new, clean, fresh ground for the runner.

    Great video, many thanks
    We have two strawberry patches, one traditional and the other in a patch of the garden that is primarily rock.
    This is where we have sewage pipe suspended on breeze blocks.
    I have joined 3X 200mm diameter (new) sewage pies making it 9 meter long with 45degree bends at each end to stop the compost from escaping. we have drilled 40mm holes along the top at 30cm spacing, Then we inserted a drip pipe along the length with the drip feeds aligned with the holes, filled with compost and planted. We have two that is 60 plants plus a few in the ends. It keeps the fruit off the ground and generally keeps slugs at bay. In hind sight we could have been better off with 160mm or 140mm diameter pipe as this would not have used so much compost, but on the whole very happy in putting an area that nothing can grow into good use, the harvesting without bending down, watering is done by plugging the hose onto the drip feeds, and most importantly an abundance of tasty strawberries.
    NB where we live bird netting is banned and if caught it's a 90€ fine

    Ive been wanting to grow some strawberries and get a couple other fruit bearing plants to reduce my consumption of high fructose corn syrup from things like sugary sodas. but I think instead of using plastic or straw, I will try using some form of micro clover which should also have the benefit of being a natural nitrogen fixer to help fertilize naturally since the soil in my area is mostly hard clay/calcium it should have plenty of nutrients, just gotta break it down and get the calcium carbonate out so the plants arent having to try and break through naturally occurring cement.

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  2 місяці тому

      Great idea. To overwinter, it depends on what you're growing. Anything that dies back or loses its foliage (like strawberries) could be simply brought into, say, a garage until things start to warm up in late winter/early spring. Other plants that are hardy enough can just be left where they are. :-)

      This helps with fruit trees too. Put a lot of fake fruit in the tree. You can also get those lightweight highly reflective thermal blankets and hang strips of them from the tree or above it. This scares birds and squirrels. Raccoons are too smart to fall for any tricks that I know of though so find a good recipe and cook them.
