Today, I talk about a story. A story of survival, discovery, and success. Or did I? Yogibo is a beanbag company that sells the Yogibo Max, and it's apparently the best beanbag in the world. OR IS IT?!

I'm an actor; it's common for up-and-coming companies (sometimes with shitty products) to put out a casting for actors to give a "testimonial." they're often loosely scripted and the goal is for the actor to pose as a "real person" using the product and then the company will use it as a promotion. i'm totally with Nick on this one; it's up to the companies to be transparent, and I definitely don't fault actors for picking up an easy gig.
that's actually super interesting!
Second! Also, many actors/performers have been trying to break into doing more online content since the pandemic and many don't know the regulations around sponsorships. It feels so close to filming a commercial that it might not set off red flags. I do feel like these people may have been taken advantage of. It seems like a good opportunity to build an online performance footprint at first glance
I feel bad for beginning actors taking these gigs without realizing the implications; it might end up making them look bad if they try to develop a genuine online presence later on. Definitely a scummy move by the company; it dilutes sincere reviews and transparent brand deals, makes it harder on content creators and the actors.
same honestly most of us would.
Yeah I don't blame performance artists for trying to work. Its on the companies to follow ethical advertisement practices. I'm still floored that some were on UA-cam Kids lol
I tried the Yogibo and the Fat boy back in September. The fat boy’s cover was too abrasive, made me sink into the void, and called my cat ugly. The Yogibo was super comfortable, modded to my body, paid off my student loans, and cured all 6 of my chronic diseases! Im definitely team yogibo!!
You forgot to mention the patent

i actually have a friend that owns a yogibo beanbag. he bought it a few years ago in an actual yogibo store and i was with him when he got it. we sat in a bunch of different ones and he ended up buying one. so they genuinely are really comfortable and seem like all the things they say in the paid reviews are actually true so im just confused why they wouldn't just sponsor normal youtubers the way youre supposed to and let them disclose to their viewers that its a sponsor?? like the way they're going about paying for reviews on their product is just weird and unethical i don't get it
I have the suspicion it's because you cannot legally compare your product in an ad with a named competitor. On TV they blur out the name, even though you can still tell what competitor they are referencing..Yogibo is trying to ride the hype wave and squash Moonpod. That's just a hunch though.
How much were you paid for this review...

@@milchreis9554yes you can. You see it on ads all the time. Paper towel advertisements come to mind. Years ago that was true though. Times have changed though, same with free advertising in regular TV media.
The only thing I can say in defense for Yogibo, is that the Moon Pod is genuinely a bad company and sells shitty bean bags. Other than that, the ads seem extremely biased
Drew Gooden has a series on his channel where he buys instagram ads for a week as a social experiment type thing and in one episode he actually reviewed it and it was basically a polyester bean pillow that can barely fit your head comfortably

I actually own a Yogibo, and this is so surprising to me! I've literally never seen an ad for them at all - I bought it really cheap on a local secondhand group, and I've had it for years now as basically an emergency one-person mattress. I've had multiple friends sleep on it and they all really liked it. So strange, I have no idea why they think they need to scam.

It is a MAJOR FTC violation to not disclose something is an ad. The influencers and the company could be looking at some serious fines.
Also, fun fact, *those bean bags are taxable income.* They performed a service, they received bean bags.
Imagine commiting tax evasion for bean bags LOLOL
Legit was thinking this, especially putting it up specifically on YT Kids.
I think because they aren’t really influencers, they aren’t too familiar with ad disclosures and why they’re necessary.

honestly, if someone went up to me and said "i'll give you a free beanbag and pay you if you review my beanbag," I'd say yes in like a second. it is really shitty what the company did but i dont judge these people at all
Personally I've tried both Yogibo™ and Moonpod, and the Yogibo™ is just so much better. Its cover is a cotton spandex blend and is so strong and stretchy. When I sat on the Moonpod my bones creaked and that's NEVER happened before. I didn't even know that bones could creak, I'm talking like an old haunted house door slowly opening kind of creak. For these reasons and more, Yogibo™ is the only beanbag I recommend that doesn't make your bones creak and give you a really bad stomach ache like you have to go to the bathroom but when you do you just can't
I love that you added the TM, that's dedication 👏

Can you talk about their patents? 😂
Jordan here is clearly in the pocket of Big Beanbag! Sad to see so many of our youth lost to this extremely comfortable scam.
@@funkalicious02 extremely comfortable scam 🤣 beautiful.
I too was looking into low to the floor seating options and it was so crazy to find that many of anything akin to a beanbag chair is SO EXPENSIVE!! Like there were actual armchairs that were $50-$100 dollars cheaper than the beanbags. I finally found some floor cushions that satisfy my needs :')
I realized that I actually happen to have a Yogibo. It sucks to learn the company is scummy, the bean bag itself is honestly not bad. I wish more companies would trust their products to speak for themselves.
*Not paid for by Yogibo
I mean you gotta realize, these huge companies as good as Yogibo have to get their names out somehow. The bean bag is fantastic, and even though they used paid actor, they did it because they know their bean bag is one of the best.
*Paid for exclusively by Yogibo
Honestly just sitting on them at their stores and they're decent enough. I don't get why they need to paid actors when they still have stores
This is secretly Chase, isn't it?
Sounds like something a young american would say…
I was thinking the same thing! They have a store in my local mall and I was actually super amped on them, especially because I'd heard about them doing cool shit in the news (that I'm not going into bc it starts to sound like this comment is sponsored XD) and now I'm finding out they're paying for positive reviews? Like bitch, I woulda done it for free before I found out you were being shady. I mean, okay, I'm not an actor and don't have the kinda money to buy 2 expensive bean bags to review on my nonexistent youtube channel, but like . . . they have real fans. It would've been way easier and probably cost less money to just have actual people who like the product talk about it. And it wouldn't have alienated people who liked the product but don't like unethical business practices. Cause now I'm definitely not buying anything else of theirs when I might've otherwise.
If Nick would have just bought Drew's shitty moon pod off of him, we wouldn't have had to deal with this conspiracy but here we are
i've slept on a yogibo; i don't know why they're scamming. it's not a bad bean bag. embarrassing that they would stoop so low. glad i never bought one for myself
at first, i was like, why is this storytime about buying a beanbag 30 minutes long?? fast forward 12 minutes and i was hooked 😭 phenomenal investigation, loved every minute of this !! 10/10 ✨
Side note: if a reviewer ever mentions that some feature of a product is "patented", you know for damn sure that they are reading marketing copy.
It doesn't mean anything, you can get a patent for stuff that doesn't even work or exist. It has the same marketing cachet as calling something natural or organic. So this is a really good indicator that sets off alarm bells.
Yeah, for sure, "patented" is such a dead giveaway. Never bought something because it was patented, and never recommended something to a friend because of it either haha
Thank you! This is a good tip.
I am glad someone else noticed it. It was quite the tipping of the hat when everyone was mentioning the "patent"
Technically, the invention does have to work AND exist, but the burden is on the examiner to prove that it doesn't (e.g. an energy creation process with a greater than 100% efficiency). Applicants used to have to send in physical models way way way back in the day but when you're patenting something more sizeable and/or intangible (e.g. a factory process) that becomes a bit impractical. (I still love it when applicants bring in samples of their products for me to touch and study during interviews though!)
Once, I tried to deny a patent on the grounds that I didn't think it was possible (I rejected it for not being properly enabled by the disclosure) and I got overturned at the appeal board because the language of the disclosure technically supported the claim language. I'm still convinced it was bullshit and I'm still mad lol.
Finally, and this is what I think pruntab was getting at, even if the product does work and exist, you can still patent stupid, impractical, and/or overly narrow inventions. Patents are not a measure of quality, they are a measure of protection and should only be read as that when it comes to determining a product's qualty.
I liked your gluten free artisinal UA-cam comment.
What’s extra weird to me is that they’re the biggest beanbag company in the world, and have been for years. Like, why do you feel the need to make these secret ads?
They have countless stores in all kinds of malls. Like, they don’t have to do this??
So the FTC doesn't consider getting a free product a sponsorship or ad. HOWEVER, a person is still required to disclose that the company sent it to you. It's been a big conversation in the beauty community--a bunch of influencers were getting called out for improper disclosure a few years ago.
That's so weird. So I could give someone a Rolex and it's not considered an ad if they review it and just so "oh this dude gave it to me"
I don't see how it's different from getting sent $1000 vs a watch worth way more
@@SuperNuclearUnicorn It is common practice for companies to send out PR. And it is up to the person who received it to decide to make a video/review or not. Because there is no obligation to make a video and no obligation to give a positive review, it's not considered an ad--there is no direct agreement between the person and company. However, it is recognized that there is still a bias there, which is why disclosure is required.
@@SuperNuclearUnicorn It's still considered an ad, it just doesn't violate FTC regulations regarding disclosure of that fact.
The first guy actually did, in the description it said " courtesy of yogibo" still shady in the same vein as fictional TikTok accts. Hide it somewhere and it's technically it's legal.
@@anthonymuccillo Actually if you hide it somewhere, it's NOT still legal. FTC website clearly states that with disclosure it's supposed to be visible and not hidden or using confusing terms.
The worst part is that the beanbag looks kinda nice, if they just advertised it in a legal and normal way it would probably sell well.
I’m pretty sure it does sell well, yogibo is a pretty big company. I have no clue why they would market like this, they were already a respected company.

Here’s the thing- as someone who has such a small following and doesn’t post on UA-cam. I’ve been contacted by multiple companies for whatever reason talking my Instagram up- this could be via DM or email. I have responded to these and have gotten as close as getting the product but realizing they make you pay for shipping almost every time. They never offer to pay you or let you know if you do post to be “possibly featured on our main page!”- that you have to put #ad. There’s multiple people who have done this and not posted #ad, that’s why I’ve never done it. If someone doesn’t pay you for an ad you should never do it. It’s most likely a product you will barely use- the most you’ll use a bean bag like that is for the video and a couple times more. Thank you for making this because it’s definitely interesting seeing more and more companies doing this every day, sad but interesting.
Why are there so many fake beanbag companies? The one drew recently talked about (the cloudbag or something?) also doesnt exist. It's an odd product choice.

These words and opinions are 100% my own and I do not get paid. Nor do I change or remove negative reviews for sellers. If this review was helpful to you, please click that it was below so more people can read it as well! Thanks***”
Many times I have bad ratings to products but I was honest. Many aren’t and that’s why Amazon put an end to those type of reviews. These people would’ve been fine if they’d stated that they received the product in exchange for an honest review AND if they’d given actual honest reviews instead of reading scripts.

god im so conflicted it seems like a legitimately good bean bag... maybe i could find a used one so the money doesnt end up in their pockets, who knows.
Beanbags are one of the few products where the "you get what you pay for" mantra doesn't really apply. You can get a bean bag for 25 bucks and it will be the most comfortable thing you've ever sat on, or you could shell out 400 and it's barely better than sitting on the ground. Also, they all look pretty similar. I think that's why a lot of online scams revolve around bean bag chairs- people aren't going to have alarms going off in their heads with any price point, and it's very easy to steal a few pictures from the internet and make a convincing website.
Meanwhile the biggest squishmallow is honestly the best “beanbag chair” I’ve ever used in my life. My kids use the size just below largest as chairs as well😅 no wonder they’re so beloved!
I did once buy something on Amazon because it had a ton of good reviews and on the package there was a “give a good review get a free gift card” thing in it and i left a review saying that doing that is kinda scummy even if your product is good.
It’s definitely scummy especially saying give a GOOD review for a gift card! I’d maybe understand just a review for a GC but tbh who wouldn’t just give a review for a gift card? I know most people would go for it.
I love the investigative feel of this video, especially how you spiral deeper and deeper into the bean conspiracy
i just dont get why they didn’t just do proper youtube sponsorships, couldn’t afford the rates i guess?
I stumbled upon this vid after buying a ditto yogibo bean bag chair from Pokémon center. They are legit and do collabs but yes, the way they advertise is trubbish.
Something important to note is that several of these UA-cam videos are on Yogibo's own website under each of the products that they're "reviewing" (I found Chase & Dustin's under the Max). They're listed on the page as "Our Customers Review The [Product]".
This 100% explains the large amount of views that they get, since they'd be from Yogibo's website embedding the video. And it could explain these videos entirely, since on the website they're presented as pretty obviously paid reviews.
The only thing it doesn't explain is why they're on each of these people's personal UA-cam accounts and why they're not unlisted, but that might just be because Yogibo is technically citing them as "our customers' reviews" and wanting to keep up the façade. That could still keep them in the territory of undisclosed reviews.
Excellent sleuthing!
Well I mean we can trust reviews on UA-cam, because we know it's a fake review based on the dislikes, right? Oh right, we don't.
Oh no, not the Moon Pod!
I’m only 10 minutes in but I know where you’re going! I used to act and I did a “commercial” for a frozen yogurt company and they filmed it for UA-cam as if we were taste testing like buzzfeed was doing there for a while. It was forced positivity and super fake.

Is it good though? 'Cause they do look good, even though their ads are scummy as fuck
ya what is the beanbag actually like??
I got the neck and arm rest (don’t know the actual name) and it’s pretty good. It’s lasted me well through the years and hasn’t lost is shape much. BUT, I would not get from them again now knowing how scamny and manipulative they are.
@@rw7873 Thanks! Somebody said they're like 300 bucks in a different comment though, so getting one is off the table anyway, haha
We have 2 yogibo lol. They're pretty average cost wise for that size, actually. We shopped around for ages and ended up going with these mainly for the stretchy cover. They are super comfy, but if you use it a bit be prepared to constantly buy refill beans. I think ours were condensed to half in the first 6 months or so. I don't remember how much the refills were but they're also not exactly cheap.

i feel like i need to note this: i was a little poor growing up and we had a bunch of yogibos laying around our house that kind of acted as beds. these, i swear, are the least comfortable beanbags i've ever had in my life. the company also makes stress balls for some reason, which are also horrible.
Hey @nickisnotgreen I think you might have revealed a real first name at 21:16. The name you said then wasn't one you had said before as far as I could tell.
Liking this so hopefully Nick will see it
He fixed it now
This was a delightfully weird deep dive I loved it
Between this and drew I’m real realising big beanbag is an industry I never expected 😭
honest bean bag review: i've had a love sac for over a decade and it's literally the most comfortable thing i own. i could sleep on it if I wanted (and i have before lol). also my parents cat loves to sleep on it which is very cute
I know this is meant to semi expose and be diligent when reading online reviews but that bean bag does look real good in comparison to its competitors LMAO
The school I work at buys a LOT of beanbag chairs for students to hang out on, and Yogibo is the best out there, just way more expensive than the competitors.
I was recently looking at a product and was looking at UA-cam reviews, and every. single. reviewer had the same talking points.
The top result was a lady with ALL of the brands products and at a few points she casually mentioned she was sent multiples to give to friends, but not once did any of them mention they were compensated for their reviews.
So I tried one of these bean bags at the mall like at least 5-6 years ago. I remember thinking it was comfy but 100% would not pay what they were asking for it.
A local mall in my area used to have one of the only in person yogibo outlets. It was usually used as a hangout for teens who would pretend to be testing out the beanbags but would end up sitting on their phones. They ended up taping off the beanbags cuz of that
I work for a beanbag company. Weirdly competitive industry!
@@orfialua7175 Wow that's so cool
heres the truth. ever since drew gooden got scammed by moonpod he started a competing beanbag company dissing the other ones. come out drew!! we know ur mad but this is not the way to go!
Poor Drew.
Wym
@@abigailwhitridge1870 Are you not familiar with Drew Gooden?
@@NateBeeman ohhh I didn’t make that connection 😅
I did not expect this to be about the Yogibo- I’m literally sitting on one right now lmao
i have pictures with "chase" bc i met him while he was on tour w a broadway show actually holy crap
he also stage managed a show in St. louis i attended
i'm happy i didn't see that vid when he posted it bc ya girl probably would've been scammed 😔 thanks for raising awareness idk why nicely priced bean bags are like holy grails
Reminds me of how Drew Gooden got scammed while trying to get sketchy products off the internet
yogibo used to have a store in my local mall. in the store they had bean bags n chairs ppl could hang out on, heated stuffed animals, and other “cozy” homegoods
I’ve never hated the words “Yogi Bo” so much in my entire life, It’s said so many times through out this video… too many
Also who the fuck chose the name Yogibo? It sounds like some sort of sketchy offbrand yogurt
Nick could u please talk abt the ZHC controversy?? It’s not getting much attention outside the art community and I do think it’s pretty important!!!!
Yes!!! I second this! Would love to see him cover it, maybe using Jazzas videos as a reference
im 99.9% sure i have met most of those young americans bc i participated in a “young american” show my freshman year, so it’s funny seeing them lol
I like how so many other people besides me are here cuz they thought itd be about something drew bought on his channel
Get Drew to weigh in on the moonpod vs yogibo take. I wonder which side he would come down on
Nick, i think you might have left Dustin's real name in the video by accident (21:14). I am not blaming you of course, just felt you might want to know
Not in anyone’s defense, but back in 2020, before Covid, I went to the mall and purchased a Yogibo beanbag. They aren’t really a new company and the beanbags are actually pretty comfy. If you want try it and have the chance, please do. I wrote this comment in mine right now!
I do not have a gun to my head
Don’t wanna time stamp it for obvious reasons, but I think you accidentally gave away “Dustin’s” name at one point. Otherwise, always love the videos! Keep it up 💜
I was about to point this out as well.
